2022 - FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the Saudi football revolution
  • Incredible result for the Green Falcons sets the stage for unprecedented transformation of the Kingdom鈥檚 football landscape, including star-studded Pro League signings and a successful bid to host the World Cup in 2034

DUBAI: On Nov. 20, 2022, billions of viewers tuned in to watch Qatar take on Ecuador and make history as the first Arab country to host the FIFA World Cup.

The moment marked a turning point for football in the Arab world, and 黑料社区 in particular as it set the stage for a revolution in the sport that would be fueled just days later by an unforgettable victory.

Hosting the World Cup was a monumental achievement for Qatar, after more than a decade of preparation and significant investment in infrastructure. The tournament showcased state-of-the-art stadiums, cutting-edge technology, and a commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for fans from all around the world.

However, the significance of the event extended well beyond football as Qatar, together with the rest of the Gulf region, seized the opportunity to present itself as a modern, dynamic hub at the crossroads of tradition and innovation.

The tournament not only broke new ground by taking place during the winter, it also introduced the world to the warmth of Arab hospitality and culture, challenging preconceived notions and fostering a greater understanding of the region.

For the second World Cup in a row, and the second time ever, four Arab teams were taking part: Qatar, Morocco, 黑料社区 and Tunisia.

On the pitch, Morocco shocked the football world by reaching the semi-finals, defeating Belgium, Canada, Spain and Portugal along the way before losing to reigning champions France. It was finest-ever performance by an Arab nation at the World Cup.

While hosts Qatar would disappointingly suffer an early exit, Tunisia at least managed the distinction of beating France 1-0 in the group stages.

How we wrote it

Arab News went viral with its front-page headline 鈥淒on鈥檛 cry for me, Argentina,鈥 celebrating 黑料社区鈥檚 historic win.

For 黑料社区, meanwhile, the World Cup became a catalyst for the country鈥檚 football revolution, ignited by a historic result on the third day of the tournament.

On Nov. 22, as the great Lionel Messi stood scratching his beard in bewilderment, Salem Al-Dawsari celebrated a goal with his traditional somersault. Half of the fans at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar were thrown into utter delirium. The rest were shocked into stunned silence. Across 黑料社区, the Middle East and, indeed, the globe, screams of celebration could be heard in the vicinity of every television screen.

The world had just witnessed the greatest moment in Saudi football history, and arguably the most memorable at that point by any Arab nation on football鈥檚 biggest stage.

Just seven minutes into the second half of the Green Falcons鈥 opening match of the competition, Al-Dawsari scored what turned out to be the match-winning goal against eventual champions Argentina.

Messi had given the South Americans a 10th-minute lead from the penalty spot, and a procession to a comfortable victory was expected by most. But the Saudis had other ideas. After a goosebump-inducing half-time team talk from French coach Herve Renard, footage of which would later go viral, the Saudi players emerged after the break a team inspired.

Saleh Al-Shehri equalized just three minutes into the second half, followed by Al-Dawsari鈥檚 intervention five minutes later. Despite Argentina鈥檚 best efforts, some heroic defending helped secure what is undoubtedly the nation鈥檚 greatest football moment.

The superlative winning goal and the famous victory it claimed were worthy of any World Cup. In hindsight, the game also marked the moment Saudi football truly emerged onto the global stage.

Though Renard鈥檚 team would not progress to the round of 16 in Qatar, a revolution in 黑料社区n football was nevertheless about to unfold.

Just over a month after the game, and only 13 days after Messi raised the World Cup trophy when Argentina beat France on penalties in the final, the world of football was again shaken to its foundations by the announcement that Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr would sign Cristiano Ronaldo during the winter transfer window.

Overnight, 黑料社区 became the center of attention in the football world. What was going on in the Kingdom?

Long before that seismic event in late December 2022, 黑料社区 already boasted a footballing history, at the domestic and international levels, that few countries in the Middle East and Asia could match. In fact, high-caliber foreign footballers were not a rarity in the country.

As far back as 1977, Al-Hilal had signed Roberto Rivellino, a member of the magical, World Cup-winning Brazilian team of 1970. More recently, the likes of Bafetimbi Gomis, Abderrazak Hamdallah and Anderson Talisca numbered among the outstanding foreign players who made the Saudi Pro League their home.

The signing of Ronaldo, however, was on a whole new level. And where the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star goes, others follow. The arrival in the Kingdom of the Portuguese legend opened the floodgates and what had been a steady stream of foreign signings became a deluge.

In the summer of 2023, after the Saudi sovereign Public Investment Fund acquired majority stakes in four of the country鈥檚 top clubs, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli, along with other investments in the game, the Pro League became the hottest destination for some of the world鈥檚 best players.

Sadio Mane and Aymeric Laporte followed Ronaldo to Al-Nassr. Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino moved to Al-Ahli. Fabinho, N鈥橤olo Kante and Karim Benzema joined then-champions Al-Ittihad. And, in the capital, the arrival of Neymar, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic bolstered an already formidable Al-Hilal side.

Saudi clubs were not signing players at the end of the careers looking for one last big payday, they were having their pick of superstars from some of Europe鈥檚 top clubs.

And that was just the beginning. Many more would follow in the summer of 2023 and during the January 2024 transfer window.

It was not long before Ronaldo proclaimed that the Saudi Pro League was better than Major League Soccer in the US and Ligue 1 in France. Those who would have bristled at such a suggestion just a year earlier had to sit up and take notice.

The wider social changes that were sweeping through 黑料社区 at the same time meant the rise of football in the country was also felt in the women鈥檚 game, which had barely existed in any organized form in the Kingdom just a few years earlier.

A Saudi women鈥檚 national team was established in 2022 and soon earned its place on the FIFA rankings. The Saudi Women鈥檚 Premier League was founded the same year and, like the men鈥檚 Pro League, now boasts some of the world鈥檚 top talents.

While the influx of superstars was changing the face of Saudi football on the pitch, a lot of game-changing work was also being done behind the scenes by the nation鈥檚 football authorities, with some very notable results.

In 2027, the Kingdom will finally host the AFC Asian Cup for the first time. The Green Falcons will be among the favorites to win the trophy, for what would be the fourth time in their history but the first since 1996.

But even that exciting announcement was surpassed when 黑料社区 was awarded hosting rights for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Fifteen futuristic stadiums are already in the pipeline for what will be the next World Cup hosted entirely by a single nation.

While many are speculating about what the tournament will look like a decade from now 鈥 with the competition expanding next year to include 48 teams, up from 32 鈥 the chances are that by then, Riyadh, Jeddah and the other Saudi host cities will be even more familiar to foreign audiences than they already are.

Thanks to Saudi Vision 2030, the ambitious plan for national development and diversification, the sports sector has been a central part of the Kingdom鈥檚 remarkable progress in recent years. This is set to continue, thanks to similar advances in the business, tourism and entertainment fields.

One of the Vision鈥檚 crowning achievements looks set to arrive in the form of Riyadh Expo 2030, when the Saudi capital will throw open its doors even wider to the rest of the world.

By the time the World Cup rolls around four years after that, few people around the globe will be quite so surprised by any Saudi achievements in the way they were when Al-Dawsari made history that memorable evening at Lusail Stadium.

Qatar 2022 had changed the game. But it was just the beginning.

Red Bull cleared the four-time world champion to make his debut in the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie
Verstappen, 27, will be joined by Chris Lulham, a 22-year-old British driver

NURBURG, Germany: Max Verstappen is set to race at the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife after acquiring the required license on Friday.
With the Formula 1 circuit off this weekend, Red Bull cleared the four-time world champion to make his debut in the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS). Arguably the world鈥檚 top race car driver, Verstappen still had to undergo a course and take a theory exam to drive in the seventh round of the 10-race NLS.
After completing both, Verstappen is scheduled to compete in a four-hour race on Saturday, driving a Porsche GT4 Cayman in the Verstappen.com Racing x Red Bull livery.
Verstappen, 27, will be joined by Chris Lulham, a 22-year-old British driver who is competing in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance for Verstappen.com Racing.
Verstappen set an unofficial lap record during a test run in a Ferrari 296 GT3 for the Swiss Emil Frey Racing team on the Nordschleife track in May. However, he does not yet have the required special racing license called the DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund) Permit Nordschleife to officially compete in the GT3 class on the track.
To obtain a 鈥淧ermit A,鈥 Verstappen needs to collect two classified race results by completing 14 laps and completing at least 20 percent of a race. Both results can come in a single race, which is why he could spend time in multiple cars this weekend.
The system was implemented in 2015 with the goal of requiring drivers of all levels to experience the Nordschleife, referred to as 鈥淕reen Hell,鈥 in slower cars before moving up.
Verstappen said he is pursuing his Permit A in order to compete in the GT3 class in the future. He has previously stated his desire to compete in Nurburgring鈥檚 annual 24-hour race among other endurance races at iconic circuits around the world.
鈥淩acing is not just my profession, but also my hobby,鈥 Verstappen said on his official website. 鈥淭his weekend I am at the Nordschleife with the goal to qualify for the mandatory race permit needed to race here in a GT3 car, which I would love.
鈥淭he Nordschleife is at the top of my list of tracks I want to race on, as it鈥檚 extremely challenging and demanding, with its enormous length and tight historic layout. I can鈥檛 wait!鈥

  • Throughout history, this stellar powerhouse has accumulated over 50 distinct names across cultures

RAFHA: The heavens sparkle with countless stars every night, but none commands the attention quite like Sirius, also known as the Dog Star.

This celestial giant has puzzled astronomers and inspired civilizations around the world for millennia, its brilliance outshone only by the sun.

Berjis Al-Fulaih, an Afaq Society for Astronomy member, said: 鈥淪irius operates as a binary star system, featuring a colossal primary star paired with a smaller stellar companion in orbital dance. Positioned just eight light-years from Earth, it stands among our closest stellar neighbors. Yet despite this vast cosmic distance, Sirius boasts nearly double the sun鈥檚 mass and burns at extraordinarily high surface temperatures, generating its characteristic dazzling radiance.鈥

Throughout history, this stellar powerhouse has accumulated over 50 distinct names across cultures. Western astronomy adopted 鈥淪irius鈥 鈥 meaning scorching or glowing 鈥 from ancient Greek, while Arab astronomers dubbed it 鈥淎l-Shi鈥檙a Al-Yamaniya.鈥 Its significance extends into religious texts; the Qur鈥檃n references it in Surat An-Najm: 鈥淎nd that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius.鈥

As the dominant star in the Canis Major constellation, Sirius earned the moniker Dog Star. Observers sometimes call it the Rainbow Star due to the way atmospheric refraction creates spectacular multicolored flashing 鈥 a natural light show that occasionally triggers UFO reports from witnesses.

Winter skies show Sirius at its finest. The star appears each December evening and is visible nightly until mid-April when it disappears into the southwestern horizon. Amateur astronomers can easily find it by tracing an imaginary line through Orion鈥檚 distinctive belt.

Sirius has permeated Arabic literary tradition across generations. Poets wove its brilliance into verse, likening its radiance to flashing swords and gleaming eyes. It became a lasting emblem of splendor and illumination, one of the heavens鈥 most enigmatic phenomena connecting scientific wonder with ancient lore and artistic expression. For ancient Arab traders, the star served as a crucial navigational aid during seasonal commercial expeditions.

Traditional Najdi astronomy preserves its legacy through figures like Rashid Al-Khalawi, who described stellar observations: 鈥淭wenty-five nights hence, Al-Mirzam (the regional name) emerges fierce as a wolf鈥檚 heart in brightness.鈥

Stolen USB leads to arrest of Karachi man accused of abusing 100 minor girls
  • Abuse went unnoticed for nine years until a shopkeeper raised the alarm, according to police
  • Case has been registered against the suspect under a law that stipulates death or life sentence

KARACHI: A stolen USB drive handed to a Karachi shopkeeper by a minor girl has led police to arrest a man accused of sexually assaulting nearly 100 children over nine years, officials said Friday.

The suspect, identified as Shabbir Ahmed, was detained on Thursday after the shopkeeper discovered the device contained hundreds of videos of child sexual abuse. The girl, one of his alleged victims, had stolen the USB from him and taken it to the shop in the Qayyumabad area to copy a movie.

鈥淲hen the shopkeeper checked the USB, he found nearly 200 clips of abuse, including the girl herself and a vendor he recognized,鈥 Defense police station chief Ghulam Nabi Afridi told Arab News. 鈥淗e immediately raised the alarm.鈥

Police arrested Ahmed shortly after the discovery, seizing further evidence including a mobile phone, and a diary containing details of victims. More than 400 clips have so far been recovered, showing abuse of nearly 100 girls, some repeatedly, Afridi said.

鈥淭he accused, who moved from Abbottabad in 2011, started abusing children in 2016 and continued this crime for nine years,鈥 he added. 鈥淗e lured girls from low-income families by offering small amounts of money and committed the abuse inside a shop with the shutter down.鈥

鈥淗ad this minor girl not stolen the USB and brought it for a movie transfer, God knows for how much longer these heinous crimes would have remained hidden.鈥

Police said the victims were between the ages of 5 and 12. A diary maintained by the suspect contained names and records, including the ethnicity of more than 85 children. The most recent assault, according to investigators, took place on Sept. 4.

According to a police complaint registered by father of one victim and seen by Arab News, the suspect has been booked under Section 376 (3) of the Pakistan Penal Code, which stipulates the death penalty or life imprisonment for raping a minor or a person with mental or physical disabilities.

Police said at least five families have so far lodged formal complaints. Medical examinations are being conducted, and further families are being contacted.

On Friday, a judicial magistrate in Karachi granted investigators five days of physical remand for the suspect, who is being interrogated.

鈥淎ll evidence has been secured,鈥 Afridi said. 鈥淢edical examinations are being arranged, and police will leave no stone unturned to ensure this criminal faces justice.鈥

Child sexual abuse is widespread in Pakistan and cases have been rising, according to local NGOs.

Rights group Sahil reported 3,364 incidents in 2024, including sexual assaults, abductions, missing children and child marriages. The Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) documented 5,398 cases between 2019 and 2023, noting a 220 percent increase in 2023 compared with 2019.

One of the most notorious scandals was uncovered in the town of Kasur in the eastern Punjab province, where between 2006 and 2015 hundreds of videos showing the abuse of mostly male children were circulated illegally, sparking national outrage.

UN Security Council condemns Houthi detention of personnel, demands immediate release
  • At least 21 UN staff seized by Yemen militants 鈥榠n clear violation of international law鈥
  • 15-member body warns humanitarian operations at risk

NEW YORK: The UN Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned the detention of at least 21 of UN personnel by Yemen鈥檚 Houthi militants, calling for their immediate and unconditional release, and warning that such actions violate international law and jeopardize humanitarian operations.
Council members expressed 鈥渄eep concern鈥 over the arrests, which began on Aug. 31, and denounced the forced entry into UN agency premises, including those of the World Food Programme and UNICEF, and the seizure of UN property by Houthis.
鈥淭hese actions are in clear violation of international law,鈥 the 15-member body said, stressing that the safety and security of UN staff and premises must be guaranteed at all times.
The council also condemned the detention of staff from UN agencies, diplomatic missions, and international and national NGOs. Some of those personnel have been held since as early as 2021.
Council members warned that the detentions are exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where food insecurity levels remain alarmingly high. They reiterated that threats to aid workers are 鈥渦nacceptable鈥 and emphasized the need for unimpeded humanitarian access.
鈥淭he council demands that the Houthis ensure respect for international humanitarian law and allow for the safe, rapid, and unhindered delivery of aid to civilians in need,鈥 the statement read.
The Security Council reaffirmed its support for UN efforts to secure the release of detained personnel through all available channels. It also underscored the importance of maintaining staff safety and enabling a secure operational environment in Houthi-controlled areas.
Council members reiterated their backing for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and the broader peace process aimed at achieving a negotiated, Yemeni-led and inclusive political settlement.
The conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014, has left hundreds of thousands dead and pushed the country to the brink of famine. While a fragile truce has largely held since 2022, the political and humanitarian landscape remains volatile.
