2002 - The Arab Peace Initiative: A vision whose time has come
  • Long-standing diplomatic proposal is increasingly vital for efforts to achieve a just solution for Palestinians and bring peace to the wider Middle East听

RIYADH: The Arab Peace Initiative, which is among the most significant diplomatic proposals of our time, has offered a fair and practical road map to Middle East peace for more than two decades.听

Recent events, especially the escalation of the crisis in Gaza, have ensured that the principles of the initiative are more relevant now than ever. As 黑料社区 leads new global initiatives, including a conference in June this year it will co-chair with France to discuss the Palestinian issue and a two-state solution, the API remains both a moral obligation and a practical plan for resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict.听

Proposed by 黑料社区 and endorsed by the Arab League in 2002, the API was first revealed by then-Crown Prince (later King) Abdullah of 黑料社区 in a conversation with journalist Thomas Friedman. In a New York Times column on Feb. 17, 2002, Friedman recounted Abdullah asking if he had 鈥渂roken into my desk鈥 after publishing a column days earlier suggesting an Arab peace plan. Abdullah then confirmed he had a speech prepared 鈥渁long those lines鈥 and was considering delivering it before the Arab League Summit in Beirut to 鈥渕obilize the entire Arab world behind it.鈥澨

The API calls for a return by Israel to its 1967 borders, the establishment of a Palestinian state, and a just solution for Palestinian refugees, in exchange for normalization of relations between Arab states and Israel.听

How we wrote it

Arab News鈥 front page featured the day 黑料社区鈥檚 Arab Peace Initiative received 鈥渦nanimous endorsement鈥 from Arab leaders at Beirut Summit.

At its core, the initiative represents a willingness to compromise in the name of Arab unity and peace; it promises justice and sovereignty for Palestinians while giving Israel a historic opportunity to seek regional acceptance.听

Israel鈥檚 continuing rejection of the proposal, and refusal even to take it seriously, is a critical missed opportunity. It has only deepened the cycle of mistrust and violence, making the prospect of peace and stability even more difficult to achieve.听

The deepening crisis in Gaza reveals the urgent need for diplomacy. Ongoing violence, mass displacement and humanitarian catastrophe have pushed the region to its limits. Neighborhoods are in ruins, infrastructure is destroyed, and too many lives have been lost.听

黑料社区, as chair of the Joint Arab-Islamic Committee on Gaza, has been on the front lines of this humanitarian catastrophe. At the same time, it has continued to seek a political solution. The Kingdom has made clear its view that lasting peace in Gaza, and throughout the region, requires the root causes of the conflict are addressed, including the occupation and the denial of Palestinian sovereignty.听

Riyadh鈥檚 commitment to peace was evident even before the conflict in Gaza escalated. In 2022, for example, 黑料社区 and the Arab League organized round table discussions between members of the API Committee, and other interested parties from around the world, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the initiative.听

Building on this, 黑料社区 joined forces with the Arab League, the EU, Egypt and Jordan in 2023 to launch the Peace Day Effort. This reaffirmed the principles of the API and called on the international community to take meaningful steps toward achieving a two-state solution to the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. The aim of these discussions was to breathe new life into the API and reaffirm it as the foundation for Arab and Islamic efforts to achieve peace, and the starting point for future negotiations.听

The lack of progress toward a political solution highlights the urgent need for fresh dialogue. To that end 黑料社区 and France will, as noted above, co-chair an international conference at the UN in New York in June. Supported by the EU, Norway and other global partners, it aims to focus on efforts to resolve the Palestinian issue and promote a two-state solution, underscoring the renewed commitment of the world to the principles of justice and peace, and to the vision of the API.听

The enduring power of the API lies in its balance and fairness. It offers Israel a chance for regional security and integration, while guaranteeing dignity and statehood for the Palestinian people. Its principles, rooted in international law and the frameworks of the UN, remain the most practical foundation for peace.听

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a reminder of what happens when the world fails to act. Unless the fundamental issues of occupation and Palestinian self-determination are addressed, peace will remain out of reach.听

Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, who became King in 2005, first revealed the Arab Peace Initiative to journalist Thomas Friedman before presenting it at the Beirut Arab Summit in 2002. AFP

Realizing the vision of the API will require bold and deliberate action. Firstly, Arab countries must reaffirm their commitment to the initiative and resist normalization deals that circumvent Palestinian rights.听

Secondly, the international community must actively support initiatives such as the Peace Day Effort, and hold Israel accountable for illegal settlement expansions and violations of international law.听

Thirdly, Israel must understand that true security comes not from military rule and occupation, but from justice, coexistence and mutual respect.听

The API is more than a mere diplomatic framework, it is a testament to the power of compromise and diplomacy. From the response by 黑料社区 to the Gaza crisis to the country鈥檚 role as co-chair of the upcoming conference in June, the Kingdom鈥檚 leadership role reflects the world鈥檚 renewed commitment to this vision for peace.听

The principles of the Arab Peace Initiative 鈥 two states, mutual recognition and a shared future 鈥 are as relevant and valid now as they were in 2002. But time is running out. With each act of violence and each missed opportunity, we move further from peace.听

The world must act now to prioritize justice and peace. The API offers a clear path forward but only if we choose to follow it. History will judge whether we had the courage to seize this moment or let the vision fade.听

Formula 1 extends Monaco Grand Prix contract until 2035
  • It is the second contract renewal in less than 12 months for Monaco
  • 鈥淭he renewal of the Monaco Grand Prix until 2035 is in keeping with a sporting and historical tradition,鈥 Prince Albert II said

MONACO: Formula 1 extended its contract with the Monaco Grand Prix for four more years on Friday, keeping one of the sport鈥檚 most iconic races on the calendar until 2035.
It is the second contract renewal in less than 12 months for Monaco, which signed a six-year extension to 2031 last November.
Monaco was first raced in 1929 and held the second official Formula 1 World Championship race on its twisty streets back in 1950. It has been part of the F1 calendar since 1955, excluding the COVID-hit 2020 season.
鈥淭he renewal of the Monaco Grand Prix until 2035 is in keeping with a sporting and historical tradition to which the principality remains deeply attached,鈥 Monaco鈥檚 head of state Prince Albert II said.
鈥淚 can only welcome this renewed commitment, which is testament to our collective success, the excellence of our collaboration with Formula 1, and the unique place that Monaco occupies in the international motorsport landscape.鈥
With old-school glamor and a harbor filled with luxury yachts, Monaco is known as 鈥渢he jewel in the crown鈥 of F1, but it鈥檚 by far the slowest circuit of the year.
Tight, twisty and not really suited to modern F1 cars, Monaco is a throwback to the series origins in the 1950s. Overtaking is so difficult that Saturday鈥檚 qualifying session is arguably more important than the race. With barriers close to the track, even the smallest mistake can mean a crash.
鈥淭he streets of Monaco have been echoing with the sound of Formula 1 since the earliest days of the sport, so I鈥檓 delighted to announce the extension of this fantastic event to 2035,鈥 F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said.
鈥淚t is an iconic race that is loved by all drivers and fans, with a unique vibe thanks to its location on the world鈥檚 most glamorous principality.鈥

  • KSE-100 index rose by 1,611.47 points, or 1.06 percent, to close at an all-time high of 154,277.19
  • Analysts say resolving the US tariff issue and easing tensions with India also supported the market

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange crossed the 154,000 mark on Friday, with analysts citing trade deals from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif鈥檚 China visit and expectations of higher cement sales from post-flood reconstruction as reasons behind the bullish trend.

The KSE-100 index rose by 1,611.47 points, or 1.06 percent, to close at 154,277.19, compared to the previous close of 152,665.72.

Jibran Sarfaraz, a stocks dealer at Munir Khanani Securities, said Pakistan鈥檚 opportunity to boost exports through lower tariffs compared to neighboring countries has contributed to the market鈥檚 upward trajectory.

鈥淭hen came the floods, which, being a natural disaster, caused significant losses especially as crops were destroyed,鈥 he told Arab News.

鈥淎t the same time, the positive side is that reconstruction will create higher demand for steel and cement, boosting their sales,鈥 he continued.

鈥淭he Pakistani PM鈥檚 visit to China has raised expectations of further trade between both the countries, and on the international stage, Pakistan鈥檚 profile has been elevated.鈥

Sarfaraz added that resolving tariff issues with the US and easing tensions with India have also helped the market gain momentum in recent weeks.

鈥淎fter that, we saw the market continue to grow, with strong performances from the banking, steel, pharma and textile sectors,鈥 he added.

Meanwhile, Ahsan Mehanti, CEO of Arif Habib Commodities, attributed the market鈥檚 performance to the government鈥檚 approval for resuming subsidies on fully funded remittances to support rupee stability.

These subsidies refer to reimbursements to banks and exchange companies on eligible inward remittances, making it possible for them to offer nominal or no fees to senders while covering their own costs.

He also mentioned another factor for the market surge, involving the energy regulator, NEPRA, possible cuts to industrial electricity tariffs that can bring down production costs.

鈥淣epra hints over negative industrial tariff adjustments, speculations over government resolve to settle power sector circular debt crises played catalyst role in bullish close at PSX,鈥 he said.

Pakistan and China signed 21 memorandums of understanding and joint ventures worth $4.2 billion to boost business cooperation in various sectors during Sharif鈥檚 visit this week.

At the same time, floods have devastated Punjab, Pakistan鈥檚 most populous province, killing 49 people so far and destroying large areas of cropland.

UK complicity in Gaza has crossed into 鈥榩articipation,鈥 journalist tells tribunal
  • Matt Kennard spoke on second day of inquiry in London, with testimony from range of experts
  • He says British government is hiding full truth about reconnaissance flights over enclave

LONDON: The UK鈥檚 complicity in Israel鈥檚 war on Gaza has crossed into participation, an investigative journalist told the Gaza Tribunal on Friday.

Matt Kennard, an author and creator of the Palestine Deep Dive blog, has tracked hundreds of British surveillance flights over Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023.

His remarks came on the second day of the tribunal, which is taking place in London. It is chaired by independent MP Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the governing Labour Party.

Speakers at the tribunal are examining allegations of genocide and war crimes against Israel, and exploring the UK鈥檚 potential complicity in them. It has heard testimonies from a range of medical, legal, political and humanitarian experts.

Kennard said the British government, responding to media reports over the past two years, had repeatedly been forced to reveal new levels of military ties to Israel during the Gaza war.

Defense Minister Luke Pollard in May said British surveillance flights over Gaza 鈥 revealed by the media 鈥 were strictly searching for the location of hostages held by Hamas and other groups. The aircraft were not involved in combat operations or intelligence sharing, he added.

But Kennard said the 鈥渟till daily鈥 missions, launched from the RAF Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus, show flight patterns that suggest a different purpose.

鈥淭he idea that it鈥檚 just for hostage rescue is preposterous,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 make any sense. And the reason they (the UK government) say that is because they know it鈥檚 participation in war crimes.鈥

Kennard highlighted an example from his own research into the surveillance flights: A British spy plane had arrived over Gaza on July 28 and spent hours in a holding pattern over the southern city of Khan Younis.

At the time, the city was the focus of an intense Israeli offensive. However, the Israel Defense Forces had publicly said no known hostages were located there or its surroundings.

鈥淲e didn鈥檛 know what they were doing over Gaza until July 28, when that pilot forgot to turn off his transponder,鈥 said Kennard.

鈥淭hat evidence clearly shows, I believe, that they (the UK military) are involved in the campaign, because 鈥 if you鈥檙e looking for hostages, and the Israeli government itself doesn鈥檛 believe they鈥檙e in Khan Younis, why are you circling the major area of the fighting that鈥檚 happening in Gaza? It doesn鈥檛 make any sense.鈥

Kennard also highlighted reporting by The Times that revealed the UK military was providing 鈥渞eal-time鈥 intelligence to Israeli counterparts.

He added: 鈥淚 think they鈥檙e collecting information on the ground to help Israel in their genocidal war against the Palestinians.鈥

Meanwhile, a lawyer representing the family of a British aid worker killed by Israel in Gaza said it is 鈥渉ighly likely鈥 that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is complicit in genocide.

Forz Khan is representing the relatives of James Henderson, 33, a former Royal Marine who was killed in April 2024 along with six others in an Israeli drone strike.

They were traveling in a convoy operated by World Central Kitchen, with clearly visible logos on their vehicles.

The family have condemned the UK government for failing to appropriately respond to the killings, and continuing to arm Israel.

Khan told the tribunal that Britain had clearly failed to fulfill its legal obligations relating to the Gaza war, and continues to breach criminal law and 鈥渁ssist genocide.鈥

He added: 鈥淚t鈥檚 highly likely that the information which was provided to the Israelis which caused that strike (on the WCK convoy) came from a plane flying over Israel flying from RAF Akrotiri.鈥

Third earthquake strikes eastern Afghanistan as death toll rises听
  • First powerful 6.0 magnitude quake struck mountainous Afghan region on Sunday听
  • The quakes have affected 1.3 million Afghans, International Federation of Red Cross says

KABUL: A third earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, has struck eastern Afghanistan, less than a week after a powerful quake in the same region killed more than 2,200 people and injured thousands of others.

At least 3,640 people were injured in the first quake, of magnitude 6, which hit the densely populated rural areas of Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces on Sunday, and a subsequent magnitude 5.5 quake on Tuesday, according to official reports.

The real toll is feared to be higher, with rescue efforts ongoing in the steep terrain hindered by landslides and rockfalls damaging already poor roads.

The latest tremor, at a depth of 10 km, occurred late on Thursday and was followed by a series of aftershocks on Friday morning, one of which measured 5.4, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences.

鈥淎n aftershock occurs every 30 minutes. People are extremely frightened. Every time there鈥檚 an aftershock, we hear women and girls screaming. They fear the same devastation they witnessed during the first earthquake,鈥 said Abdul Fatah Jawad, director of the Ehsas Welfare and Social Services Organization, who was with a team delivering aid to survivors in Kunar.

鈥淭he psychological shock and trauma are severe. The tremors are extremely strong.鈥

At least 37 people were hospitalized after Thursday鈥檚 quake, local media reported. As most families are still sheltering in open areas and tents, there were smaller casualties from the most recent quake, Jawad said.

鈥淣eeds are huge following the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan affecting over 1.3 million people,鈥 Jagan Chapagain, secretary-general and CEO of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said in a statement.

鈥淭his earthquake could not have come at a worse time. The disaster not only brings immediate suffering but also deepens Afghanistan鈥檚 already fragile humanitarian crisis.鈥

The initial quake had destroyed entire villages in the Ketak Valley of Noorgal district, where most of the casualties have been reported, said Dr. Rahmatullah Zahid, who was flown into the region from Nangarhar to help survivors.

鈥淧eople have lost their homes and all their belongings. They are in urgent need of shelter, as the current number of tents is insufficient. They also require clothing and essential household items for cooking, along with raw food supplies. These are immediate needs, and substantial long-term support will also be necessary,鈥 he told Arab News.

鈥淥n average, five to six people from each family died in the Aug. 31 earthquake. We spoke with one survivor who lost all of his family members, and another who lost 14 relatives. There wasn鈥檛 a single family untouched by casualties. The scale of this tragedy is immense.鈥
