2010 - Burj Khalifa: The world鈥檚 tallest tower
  • A marvel of engineering, the building stands as a symbol of Dubai聽

DUBAI: The day the Burj Khalifa officially opened, it stood as a symbol of prosperity at a time when the world was on its knees, crippled financially by the worst recession of our lifetime.聽

Dubai had just rung in the new year, waving a relieved farewell to a turbulent 2009, with this vast, new, 828-meter-tall building towering over the city, its roots held solid in the foundations of Dubai Mall, itself one of the biggest structures of its kind.聽

Four days later, the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, on the anniversary of his accession, officially opened the world鈥檚 tallest tower, originally named Burj Dubai and later renamed Burj Khalifa in honor of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose support helped complete it amid economic challenges. Those of us lucky enough to cover the story on Jan. 4, 2010, were given a sneak peek at the observation deck and a chance to take in the breathtaking views it offers, mist and haze permitting.聽

We met executives from Emaar, the developers behind the tower, who spoke proudly of their achievement as the media formed a scrum around them. There was no mention of the impending name change at that point; they would not even reveal the closely guarded secret of the building鈥檚 exact height. It was only later, during that evening鈥檚 official opening ceremony and spectacular firework display, that these things were revealed.

How we wrote it

The front page of Arab News celebrated the opening of the Burj Khalifa, described by its developers as a 鈥渧ertical city.鈥

Sheikh Mohammed had ordered construction of the building years earlier, when the global economy was in a much healthier state. It was clear even before the recession that Dubai needed to diversify its economy, moving away from a reliance on oil revenue, and the service and tourism industries seemed an obvious way forward.聽

The previous holder of the record for world鈥檚 tallest building was the Taipei 101, at 508 meters. It held the record for six years, from 2004 until 2010, but is now only the 11th-tallest.聽

Sheikh Mohammed wanted an iconic symbol of Dubai that would be recognized around the world but he was not satisfied with just another skyscraper; simply building the world鈥檚 tallest was not good enough, this one had to smash all existing records. In short, he was raising the bar.聽

鈥淚t started with a dream, and then a journey of seeing that dream every day getting built higher and higher,鈥 Ahmad Al-Falasi, the executive director of Emaar, said of the project.聽

The Burj Khalifa boasts the world鈥檚 highest observation deck, with views of the world鈥檚 largest choreographed fountain display. One side of the tower is fitted with the world鈥檚 biggest lighting display. Inside are the highest apartments, restaurants and nightclub.聽

When the tower was completed, its opening in 2010 was overshadowed by a financial crisis that began in 2007 and had taken a toll throughout the world, and Dubai was no exception. An Arab News editorial published the day after the official opening acknowledged the architectural achievements of the project but also reminded readers of the hardships being experienced everywhere, not least in Dubai.聽

鈥淏urj Khalifa is a reminder of the vision which has driven the quite remarkable real estate development in the emirate (of Dubai),鈥 it said.聽

鈥淪o at a time of profound pessimism and sky-high debt around the world, the sky-high Burj Khalifa, as it is called now, is a mighty finger pointing upward toward better and altogether more prosperous times.鈥濃

The creation of the world鈥檚 tallest tower naturally required great attention to detail, including details that ultimately save lives. For example, the building is actually a series of interwoven towers that end at different levels, meaning no single surface runs all the way from the ground to the top. The shape this creates prevents strong winds from causing vortexes that could cause the building to sway too much.聽

The external glass was designed to reflect more than 70 percent of the sun鈥檚 heat; without it, temperatures inside would be deadly during the summer. A 鈥渇araday cage鈥 style structure created for the exterior of the tower acts as a massive lightning conductor to prevent damage from electrical storms. And two vast chiller systems outside the tower pump cooled water into its air-conditioning systems.聽

The structure features an escape network, including a lift that can travel 138 floors in less than a minute (the greatest distance traveled by any single lift in the world) within a shaft encased in fire-resistant concrete; effectively the Burj Khalifa鈥檚 鈥渓ifeboat鈥 in case of emergency. There is also a series of safe refuges at intervals throughout the building, also encased in fire-resistant concrete and supplied with fresh air that can be delivered at high enough pressure to deflect smoke in the event of a fire.聽

The design was so advanced and ambitious that the architects and engineers even had to rethink how to deal with the messy business of sewage. A straight drop down a pipe from the top would not work; waste created by the flush of a toilet at the top of the tower would have reached speeds of up to 160 kph by the time it arrived at the foot of the building. Therefore waste drops just a few floors at a time through a series of sound-proofed pipes and pumps, while super-pressured pumps send fresh water to a series of water tanks throughout the building.聽

The Burj Khalifa was a first, in many respects, and will always mark the moment when architecture changed forever, though it seems likely to lose its world record a few years from now when 黑料社区鈥檚 1,000-meter-tall Kingdom Tower is completed.

Napoli鈥檚 Osimhen completes 75mln euro move to Galatasaray
  • Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games
  • Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks

ISTANBUL: Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on Thursday completed his permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray in a 75 million euro ($87.5 million) four-year deal.

A key figure in Napoli鈥檚 2023 title triumph, Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games as the Istanbul club claimed their 25th Super Lig crown.

He was absent as Napoli, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, resumed training at the start of the week as the finer details of the deal were concluded.

Napoli coach Antonio Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side鈥檚 Scudetto defense next term.

Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks but up to Thursday had stalled over the terms of payment for the transfer.

Napoli recently recruited Kevin De Bruyne from Premier League club Manchester City.

Osimhen becomes Galatasaray鈥檚 most expensive ever player.

Talking about the powerful effects of a live performance of a film score, he added: 鈥淲hen music is played in front of an audience, the spotlight is directly on its role as a hidden narrator that expresses emotions, enhances the plot and deepens the visual experience.鈥

He explained that the festival aims to promote an appreciation of the movie soundtrack as an art form in its own right, and encourage young talent to explore the fields of musical composition and sound production.

The Riyadh Film Music Festival is taking place this year in conjunction with the hosting in the capital of the Esports World Cup, as part of the commission鈥檚 efforts to foster cultural and artistic momentum in line with the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan for national development and diversification.

LONDON: Jordan welcomed a Swedish court鈥檚 ruling on Thursday that sentenced a member of the Daesh terror group to life in prison for his involvement in the horrific killing of Jordanian Air Force pilot Lt. Moaz Al-Kasasbeh.

Osama Krayem was implicated in the killing of Al-Kasasbeh, 26, who was burned alive in a cage after being captured in 2014 following his plane鈥檚 crash in Syria during a mission against the Daesh group.

Mohammad Al-Momani, the Jordanian government鈥檚 spokesman, added that Jordan fully trusted the Swedish legal and judicial processes that resulted in the decision.

Al-Momani said that Jordanians will always remember the tragic incident and that the ruling is a crucial step toward holding all accountable.

Krayem, a Swedish citizen, is already incarcerated for his involvement in other terrorist attacks in Europe, specifically the Paris and Brussels attacks in 2015 and 2016.

The killing of Al-Kasasbeh shocked Jordanians after Daesh released a gruesome video showing him being burned alive in a cage. The Swedish court said that while the evidence indicated that another person ignited the fire that killed him, Krayem was also implicated in the murder.

  • Shehbaz Sharif chairs high-level meeting attended by Pakistan army chief and senior ministers to review law and order situation
  • Sharif notes ground operations, relevant legislation and 鈥渕eaningful public engagement鈥 have been effectively utilized by authorities

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said his government is working on a 鈥渃omprehensive, effective and actionable strategy鈥 to completely eliminate militant outfits in the country, state-run media reported, as Islamabad grapples with a rise in militant attacks in its western provinces.

Pakistan has struggled to contain increasing militant attacks in its northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and southwestern Balochistan provinces in recent months, where it faces twin insurgencies launched by the Pakistani Taliban and separatist Baloch militant outfits.

Sharif chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on Counterterrorism and Establishment of the State鈥檚 Writ (Harden the State) in Islamabad, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan said in a report. The meeting was attended by senior military and government officials, including Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. Muhammad Asim Malik, the four provincial chief secretaries, police chiefs, senior ministers and officials.

鈥淗e [Sharif] said Pakistan is working on a comprehensive, effective, and actionable strategy for the complete elimination of anti-social elements including Fitna Al-Hindustan and Khawarij,鈥 Radio Pakistan said.

Pakistan鈥檚 military frequently uses 鈥淔itna-al-Khawarij鈥 for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and 鈥淔itna-al-Hindustan,鈥 to describe the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other separatist outfits. Islamabad accuses New Delhi of arming and funding militant groups in KP and Balochistan, a charge India denies. Pakistan also blames Afghanistan for providing sanctuaries to militants that it says launch attacks on Pakistani soil. Kabul has always denied the allegations.

Sharif said Pakistan has adopted a multi-dimensional strategy in its war against 鈥渢errorism,鈥 noting that ground operations, relevant legislation, meaningful public engagement, and discouragement of extremist ideologies have been effectively utilized by authorities.

鈥淗e directed the committee to ensure effective coordination between the federal and the provincial governments and strictly implement its recommendations,鈥 the report added.

The Pakistani prime minister highlighted that a peaceful and 鈥渢errorism-free strong state structure鈥 is essential to restore investors鈥 confidence at the international level. Sharif said the government鈥檚 reforms, such as the digitization of several systems and improvement in the tax system, were restoring investors鈥 confidence.

A day earlier, Pakistan鈥檚 army chief addressed participants at the 16th National Workshop Balochistan in Rawalpindi where he reiterated the military鈥檚 commitment to eliminating militancy. Munir had said during his speech that violent extremism must be countered, while calling for a unified national response.

Separatist groups in Balochistan have long accused the Pakistani state of exploiting the province鈥檚 vast natural resources, ranging from gas and coal to copper and gold, without equitably sharing the benefits with local communities. They claim successive governments have prioritized extraction over development, leaving the region impoverished despite its mineral wealth.

Pakistani authorities have, however, consistently rejected such accusations, maintaining that a significant number of development projects are underway to uplift Balochistan鈥檚 economy, improve infrastructure and expand access to education and health care.

In KP, the TTP has launched some of the deadliest attacks against law enforcers and civilians in its bid to impose its own version of Islam in the country.
