Where We Are Going Today: Cosefan in Diriyah
  • Cosefan takes a comedic approach to art that encourages guests to explore their creative sides without pressure

With the booming art scene in 黑料社区, a burst of creative inspiration is only to be expected. There are quite a few places to show off your artistic side in Riyadh, but they are usually limited by workshop timings.聽

Cosefan, located in the historic Diriyah, is a space where you can personify your artistic self. The spot is lively with Arabic music, lush greenery and decor that creates an atmosphere unlike any other seen in the city.聽

The space offers several shorter mentored art experiences, including pottery, painting, tote bag embroidery and other more intensive workshops such as necklace-making, leather notebook-making, Kufi calligraphy, Arabic calligraphy, sculpture and gilding art courses.聽

One of the more popular sessions is the wheel pottery course. Eight thousand years ago, the Sumerians, in what is now Iraq, began firing pottery, and 5,000 years ago they invented the potter鈥檚 wheel. The session invites you to experience working with clay and disconnect from the outside world by creating a personalised coffee cup using the pottery wheel.

If you would rather have a solo art experience or simply have a fun evening with your friends playing around with art supplies, they have self-guided experiences, including gypsum molding and coloring, glass painting, cup glazing and canvas painting.聽

Cosefan takes a comedic approach to art that encourages guests to explore their creative sides without pressure, making art both approachable and enjoyable.

On Mondays, they have blindfolded drawing sessions 鈥 wearing yellow is essential; Tuesdays are for drawing the ugliest painting and the winner gets a gift 鈥 wearing white is a must. On Wednesday, you鈥檙e invited to draw your enemy 鈥 whether it is your manager at work or an ex friend 鈥 in their ugliest form, and then set fire to the drawing. These are just a few of the examples of the humorous sessions offered each week.聽

You can enjoy all this while sipping a cup of tea or munching on a dessert from their coffee shop.聽

The spot is a great way to let off some steam at the end of a long day, or to spend the weekend with your friends.

Paul Guiragossian

鈥楢耻迟辞尘苍别鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淧rofoundly shaped by his experience of exile and displacement, Paul Guiragossian developed a unique visual language that blends naturalism, modernism, and figurative abstraction to explore the human condition,鈥 Christie鈥檚 lot essay says of the Jerusalem-born Lebanese artist. This work from the 1980s is widely considered one of his masterpieces, and has previously fetched the second-highest price for one of the artist鈥檚 works at auction. 鈥溾楢utomne鈥 reveals the artist鈥檚 unequalled mastery of color,鈥 the lot essay states. 鈥淲ith thick and elongated brushstrokes in various nuances of yellow (said to have been his favorite color), the composition reflects every facet of the human condition with radiant complexity through multiple figurative references, while simultaneously revealing the artist鈥檚 appeal for abstraction 鈥 The thick impasto applied to the canvas offers a sculptural and Expressionist quality that allows the figures to leap out of the canvas.

鈥(The work) oscillates between happiness and sadness,鈥 the essay continues, 鈥渆xpressing hope for a brighter future while alluding to an everlasting sense of melancholy.鈥

Abdulhalim Radwi

鈥楿苍迟颈迟濒别诲鈥&苍产蝉辫;

With the exception of Mohammed Al-Saleem, Radwi is perhaps 黑料社区鈥檚 most significant Modernist artist. Al-Saleem was one of those fortunate enough to receive government sponsorship to study the arts overseas 鈥斺痮btaining a doctorate from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. 鈥淩adwi's work is characterized by its fusion of traditional architecture, desert life and folklore with modernist influences, resulting in brightly colored semi-abstracted compositions such as this city scape showcasing arabesque curves and Arabic letters,鈥 the lot essay states.

Samia Halaby

鈥楪补谤诲别苍颈补鈥&苍产蝉辫;

This 1978 painting by the New York-based Palestinian artist, whom Christie鈥檚 calls 鈥渙ne of the Arab world鈥檚 most important contemporary painters and a leading figure in the international abstract art scene,鈥 is part of her much sought-after 鈥淒iagonal Flight鈥 series, 鈥渋n which she explores geometric abstraction through diagonal lines and contrasting colors, resulting in a dynamic spatial interplay.鈥 Like much of Halaby鈥檚 work, it is inspired in part by Islamic geometry.

Kamal Boullata

鈥楴octurne I鈥

The Palestinian painter 鈥渂ecame a prominent artist of his generation,鈥 the lot essay states, thanks to pieces such as this, 鈥渁 vibrant work 鈥 representative of his harmonious and rhythmical geometric oeuvre that navigates the tension between exile and belonging.鈥 That鈥檚 a tension with which Boullata was painfully familiar, having left his homeland to study in Rome and Washington D.C. before settling in Berlin.

鈥淏oullata described the manual exercise of these canvases as a process that swings from the mechanical to the organic: he begins with a pencil and a ruler to create a mathematical rendering, and once a pattern forms in his work, it becomes a skeleton ready to receive color as flesh,鈥 the essay explains.

Mahmoud Said

鈥楳ekarzel Hill鈥

The Alexandrian painter is regarded as the father of Egyptian Modernism and is one of the Arab world鈥檚 most celebrated artists. This particular work was once owned by former Egyptian Prime Minister Hussein Pasha Sirry, and is described by Christie鈥檚 as 鈥渁 mesmerizing landscape鈥 in which Said 鈥渆ffortlessly captures the rolling hills, rich earth, and summer skies of Lebanon, where he spent many of his summers.鈥

Laila Shawa

鈥楥ity of Peace (Jerusalem)鈥

The late Palestinian artist was, Christie鈥檚 says, 鈥渒nown for her brave persona and bold artistic oeuvre鈥 that 鈥渆xpressed her perspective as a Palestinian female, offering sharp socio-political commentary and highlighting the difficult realities faced by Palestinians under occupation.鈥 This large-scale work from the 1970s, when Shawa was in her thirties, 鈥渃onveys the artist鈥檚 longing for her homeland and depicts a hopeful vision for the future of Palestine.鈥

鈥淪he represents a new generation of Arab women unafraid to be both strong and imperfect. That truth is what makes this project not just entertaining, but deeply human and profoundly inspiring,鈥 they added.

How Cairo Design Week is taking Arab design to the world stage

DUBAI: As the global design community turns its eyes to Cairo this November, the Egyptian capital is preparing to host the third edition of Cairo Design Week, a platform that highlights the region鈥檚 creativity, heritage and innovation.

At the heart of the movement is designer Hisham Mahdy, who founded the event in 2022 after decades in the design industry.

鈥淥ver 25 years, my design vision evolved with Egypt; from decoration and function to a language shaping culture, identity and the future,鈥 he told Arab News. 鈥淚 shifted from solo projects to building an ecosystem that nurtures talent, connects creatives, and bridges heritage with innovation.鈥

Before Cairo Design Week came the Cairo Design Award, launched in 2017 to recognize Egypt鈥檚 growing creative community.

鈥淲e had talent but no platform to showcase it, so I launched the Cairo Design Award as a statement that design matters,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淐DA became a space for creatives to connect and be seen. But it needed a bigger stage 鈥 one that brought design into public life. That鈥檚 how Cairo Design Week was born.鈥

Now entering its third year, the event continues to expand across Cairo鈥檚 districts, activating heritage sites and building stronger global collaborations.

鈥淭he first edition tested the waters; the second proved its staying power. Now we鈥檝e expanded into new districts, activated more heritage sites, and deepened collaborations,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淐DW is no longer just an event; it鈥檚 becoming a movement.鈥

This year鈥檚 edition will feature exhibitions, fashion shows, installations and talks under the theme 鈥淒esign, So I Can See You,鈥 inspired by the Greek philosopher Socrates.

鈥淔or us, Arab identity isn鈥檛 something to be preserved behind glass 鈥 it鈥檚 living and evolving,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not imitating global trends. We鈥檙e contributing to them from our own cultural lens."

Under a new partnership between the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism and Frieze, Abu Dhabi鈥檚 flagship art fair will be rebranded as Frieze Abu Dhabi.
