  • Russell crashed in practice on Friday but drove brilliantly around the Marina Bay track in the final round of qualifying
  • McLaren need 13 points from their two drivers in Sunday鈥檚 race to clinch a second consecutive constructors鈥 championship title

SINGAPORE: George Russell put Mercedes on pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday with Red Bull鈥檚 Max Verstappen taking the second spot on the front row and complaining of being obstructed as he tried to chase down the Englishman.

Russell crashed in practice on Friday but drove brilliantly around the Marina Bay track in the final round of qualifying to put in two laps worthy of pole, his best timed at one minute 29.158 seconds.

鈥淎mazing to be on pole position,鈥 said Russell. 鈥淵esterday was a very challenging day for many different reasons, but it鈥檚 good to come back and get a good result today. Of course, there鈥檚 a long, sweaty race tomorrow.鈥

Dutchman Verstappen, who won the last two rounds of the championship from pole, was 0.182 seconds back but disgruntled after being blocked by the McLaren of Lando Norris and making a mistake on his final flying lap.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 what happens when there鈥檚 a car in front of you, just cruising two seconds in front,鈥 said the four-times world champion.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 quite clear that that鈥檚 not nice when it happens. It could have been avoided.鈥

Championship leader Oscar Piastri, who leads Verstappen by 69 points in the drivers鈥 standings, will start on the second row after clocking the third fastest time.

鈥淥bviously, I would have wanted more, but I don鈥檛 think we had four tenths in it to go and get pole,鈥 said the Australian.

鈥淚t was a pretty clean session so that鈥檚 all I can ask for.鈥

Kimi Antonelli will start in the other Mercedes on the second row of the grid alongside Piastri, whose teammate Norris was fifth fastest and will line up in row three with Ferrari鈥檚 Lewis Hamilton.

McLaren need 13 points from their two drivers in Sunday鈥檚 race to clinch a second consecutive constructors鈥 championship title.

Pakistan warns of severe cyclone near Karachi amid forecast of more rains in Punjab
  • Winds and thunderstorms with moderate rain triggered by Cyclone SHAKHTI expected in Sindh, Balochistan
  • Punjab鈥檚 top disaster management official Irfan Kathia says rainfall will lash the province again from Oct. 5-7

KARACHI: A cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has intensified into a severe system located about 390 kilometers south-southwest of Karachi, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday, while also forecasting more rain in eastern Punjab from Oct. 5 to 7 as the province continues to grapple with flood damage.

At least 1,037 people have died in Pakistan due to heavy rains, floods and landslides during the annual monsoon season between Jun. 26 and Oct. 1, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

More than 3.6 million people were affected across 3,363 villages, with nearly 1.3 million moved to safer areas and hundreds of relief camps established in inundated districts of Punjab, the country鈥檚 agricultural heartland.

The floods largely spared southern Sindh, unlike three years ago when Pakistan lost over 1,700 lives and the province was the worst hit. However, winds and thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain triggered by Cyclone SHAKHTI are expected to affect

Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Hub, Lasbela, Awaran and Kech districts in Sindh and Balochistan.

鈥淪ea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough with squally winds of 40-50 gusting 55 km/hour near the Sindh coast,鈥 the PMD said in a statement. 鈥淔ishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea till Oct. 5.鈥

The cyclone is expected to move west-southwest, reaching the northwestern and adjoining central parts of the Arabian Sea by Oct. 5, before changing direction and weakening over the next 24 hours.

The PMD said winds could blow at 90 to 100 kilometers per hour, strengthening to around 110 km/h, with gusts as high as 125 km/h in the following 36 hours.

It said winds would weaken later, but the sea would remain rough to very high over the north-central Arabian Sea.

RAIN IN PUNJAB

Meanwhile, Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said rains are expected to return to the province on Oct. 5 and continue in the northern regions of Pakistan until Oct. 7.

He said the intensity of rainfall may increase on Oct. 6-7, with 50 to 70 millimeters expected in several districts of Punjab, adding that heavy rains could raise river flows to between 100,000 and 150,000 cusecs.

Punjab has been reeling from weeks of flooding that inundated farmland, destroyed crops, displaced thousands and disrupted transport and irrigation networks, leaving many rural communities struggling to recover.

Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with scientists warning that rising temperatures are making South Asian monsoon rains heavier and more erratic.

Seasonal downpours provide up to 80 percent of the country鈥檚 annual rainfall but frequently cause widespread destruction.

The catastrophic 2022 floods submerged one-third of Pakistan, displaced 30 million people and caused economic losses exceeding $35 billion.

Pakistan, 黑料社区 discuss Gaza ceasefire after Hamas accepts parts of Trump peace plan
  • Both countries reaffirm support for a two-state solution and vow to stay engaged with Muslim nations on Gaza peace
  • Trump鈥檚 20-point proposal called for a ceasefire, hostage return and Israeli withdrawal under international oversight

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and 黑料社区 on Saturday discussed ongoing efforts for a durable ceasefire in Gaza after Hamas accepted parts of a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, with both countries pledging to stay engaged with other Muslim nations on the issue.

Trump unveiled his 20-point plan last month to end the two-year war in Gaza after consulting leaders of eight Arab-Islamic nations in New York and holding a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The plan called for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian territory, the return of all Israeli hostages within a specified period and a phased Israeli withdrawal from the area. It also proposed Hamas鈥檚 disarmament and exclusion from governance, with Gaza to be run by a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee overseen by an international 鈥淏oard of Peace鈥 chaired by Trump.

Hamas said it was willing to accept some elements of the deal, though it noted there were aspects of the plan requiring further consultations among Palestinians. The US president subsequently ordered Israel to stop bombing Gaza while welcoming Hamas鈥檚 statement.

Pakistan and 黑料社区 discussed the situation in a phone call between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, according to an official statement.

鈥淭he two leaders discussed regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza,鈥 Pakistan鈥檚 foreign office said in a social media post. 鈥淭hey reviewed ongoing diplomatic efforts, including engagements and consultations among the eight Arab-Islamic countries and the United States in New York, aimed at achieving an immediate and durable ceasefire, ensuring unhindered humanitarian assistance and securing lasting peace in Gaza.鈥

鈥淏oth Ministers reaffirmed their firm commitment to the Palestinian cause and agreed to remain closely engaged with Arab and Islamic partners, as well as the international community, to advance a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace based on the two-state solution,鈥 it added.

The war in Gaza started after Hamas鈥檚 attack on Southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which left around 1,200 people dead, while 251 others were taken hostage. The group described the attack in response to the deteriorating condition of Palestinian people living under Israeli occupation.

Israel鈥檚 retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has so far killed over 67,000 people, mostly women and children, and wounded nearly 170,000 others.

Pakistan鈥檚 Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said earlier in the day Hamas鈥檚 acceptance of parts of Trump鈥檚 plan had increased the chances of a ceasefire in Gaza, pledging Islamabad鈥檚 continued support for everlasting peace in Palestine.

Media reports said Israel鈥檚 army had also started preparing for the first phase of Trump鈥檚 plan following Washington鈥檚 directive for a halt to airstrikes.

Pakistan and 黑料社区 have stepped up high-level consultations on regional developments after signing a bilateral defense pact last month, formalizing their decades-long security partnership to strengthen joint deterrence by pledging to treat aggression against one country as an attack on both.

Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 in full swing with Uzbekistan as guest of honor
  • The festival has significant representation from the Institute of Public Administration, showcasing its scientific and legal publications
  • Book fair is one of the longest-running events in Riyadh鈥檚 cultural calendar

RIYADH: The Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 began on Thursday at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University.

More than 2,000 publishing houses from over 25 countries are taking part in the two-week-long event, which is organized by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission.

The fair serves as a platform for publishers, writers, and cultural institutions to connect with readers and industry professionals.

Abdullatif Al-Wasel, CEO of the commission, said the event 鈥渞eflects the Kingdom鈥檚 strategy to strengthen its cultural leadership regionally and globally, while also contributing to community awareness and economic growth in line with Vision 2030.鈥

The Saudi Institute of Public Administration has a significant presence at the event, showcasing its range of scientific, legal, and management publications.

This year, Uzbekistan is the fair鈥檚 guest of honor. Al-Wasel highlighted the country鈥檚 鈥渟ignificant cultural role and strong ties with the Kingdom,鈥 noting that the partnership underscores the event鈥檚 contribution to cultural exchange.

Uzbekistan鈥檚 pavilion showcases rare manuscripts, literary works, and a cultural program that includes performances and artistic displays. The collaboration also features joint activities with the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, including stage performances and artistic exchanges.

Beyond the international showcases, local creativity is also in the spotlight. One of the standout booths this year is Qessati (My Story), an initiative founded by Saudi entrepreneur Omar Tayeb in March 2024, which creates personalized books by inserting a child鈥檚 photograph, name, hobbies and interests into an illustrated story.

鈥淲e turn them into a cartoony character inside their very own story,鈥 Tayeb told Arab News. 鈥淭he idea started when I wrote a story for my daughter, and I saw how much it changed her behavior. That鈥檚 when I realized this could be a project for every child, not just my own.鈥

Qessati has already produced more than 1,000 books in Arabic and English and has expanded across the Gulf and North Africa.

鈥淥ur goal is to make learning and reading an enjoyable part of a child鈥檚 daily life,鈥 Tayeb said. 鈥淏y connecting the story with the child鈥檚 identity, values, and imagination, we create something that stays with them.鈥

The booth also features a children鈥檚 prayer book designed with illustrated characters to help young readers memorize daily supplications.

In addition to exhibition booths, the fair offers a wide-ranging cultural program, including seminars, lectures, poetry evenings and workshops. An expanded business zone is also part of this year鈥檚 edition, aimed at strengthening the publishing sector and facilitating partnerships across the industry.

The fair is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight, with Friday opening hours starting at 2 p.m.

Sky News probe uncovers new details about Israel鈥檚聽support for Gaza militia
  • Anti-Hamas Popular Forces positioning itself to play role in enclave鈥檚 future governance
  • Israeli support part of divide and conquer strategy, analysts say

LONDON: New details have emerged about Israel鈥檚 controversial support for the anti-Hamas Popular Forces militia in Gaza, including providing the group with weapons and assisting its combat operations with airstrikes.

The militia, led by Yasser Abu Shabab, the head of a former looting gang, is positioning itself to play a significant role in the future governance of Gaza.

An found that the militia is receiving aid from the US-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and being allowed to smuggle cash, guns and vehicles into the Palestinian enclave by the Israel Defense Forces.

Experts warned that Israel鈥檚 support for the group is part of a divide and conquer strategy, in the same vein as Tel Aviv鈥檚 previous support for Hamas as a counterweight to Fatah.

The Sky team followed the movements and activities of Abu Shabab and his men for months. The militia operates from a largely intact area of southern Gaza where there are 鈥渁mple supplies of food, medical facilities, a school and even a mosque,鈥 Sky reported.

About 1,500 people are now living in the Popular Forces base, including 500-700 fighters, many of whom have joined in recent weeks as part of a recruitment drive. In total, the militia and its allies have about 3,000 fighters across Gaza.

The base is located on the route that aid trucks follow when entering the enclave through the Kerem Shalom crossing, giving the Popular Forces free access to loot supplies.

A UN report from last November found that Abu Shabab and his gang operate as 鈥渢he most influential stakeholders behind the systematic and massive looting of convoys.鈥

The group鈥檚 primary source of cash flow was cigarette smuggling, the report added, highlighting that Israel had banned the entry of tobacco into Gaza, spiking the price of individual cigarettes to as high as $20 in some cases.

One aid worker told Sky: 鈥淎bu Shabab was empowered by cigarette smuggling. In that kind of curtailed environment, you鈥檙e going to get Abu Shababs.鈥

Militia member Hassan Abu Shabab told Sky that after Hamas killed dozens of his fellow fighters, Israel began allowing the controversial GHF to supply the Popular Forces base with food aid.

Officials from the UN Relief and Works Agency and the Norwegian Refugee Council told Sky that the supply of aid to an armed group contravenes humanitarian laws and the principle of impartiality.

An IDF soldier, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Sky that the Israeli military is providing armaments to Yasser Abu Shabab and his men.

鈥淚srael helps him. It gives him grenades, it gives him money, it gives him vehicles, it gives him food, it gives him all types of things,鈥 the soldier said.

Videos published by Popular Forces members on TikTok show the militia鈥檚 fleet of vehicles, many of which display Israeli license plates.

Sky found evidence that suggested close coordination between the militia and the Israeli Air Force in anti-Hamas operations.

A Popular Forces unit was ambushed by Hamas fighters on April 13, south of the militia鈥檚 base in Rafah, resulting in four deaths. A day later, the house where the ambush took place was flattened by an Israeli airstrike.

Amjad Iraqi, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, said Israel鈥檚 support of the militia is designed to make Palestinian resistance to occupation more difficult.

鈥淭he idea is that the more you can remove the hegemony of any particular (faction), the more difficult you make it for society to resist the occupation,鈥 he told Sky.

Neve Gordon, a professor of international law at London鈥檚 Queen Mary University, told the channel: 鈥淭he idea 鈥 is to try and turn Gaza into a land controlled by warlords in different parts, so there is no unity among the Palestinians.

鈥淲e can see what happens to countries that are divided by warlords, and the kind of internal struggles that emerge and often last years or decades.鈥
