  • The nine-time World Rally Champion went off the road 12 kilometers into the 327km-stage between Bisha and Al Henakiyah

AL-HENAKIYAH, 黑料社区: Sebastien Loeb struggled to complete Stage 3 of the Dakar Rally on Tuesday after rolling his car near the start, a setback that is likely to cost him his dream of a first title in the event.
The nine-time World Rally Champion went off the road 12 kilometers into the 327km-stage between Bisha and Al Henakiyah. After a nasty bounce his Dacia performed several impressive rolls, which seriously damaged the vehicle.
The 50-year-old Frenchman and his Belgian co-driver Fabian Lurquin set off again after a five-minute stop for repairs, but struggled throughout the rest of the stage.
Loeb, who has finished second three times in the Dakar Rally, ended the stage in 4 hours 20 minutes 12 seconds, more than an hour behind the day鈥檚 winner, 19-year-old South African Saood Variawa.
鈥淲e were able to continue but suddenly the steering rod broke, I think because of the rollover,鈥 said Loeb at the finish.
鈥淭hen we had a problem with the engine overheating. We tried to finish the stage. We managed to do so, but we lost an hour.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 the kind of day we prefer. We lost an hour and we got the feeling that we were in 鈥榠t鈥 up to our necks. But it is what it is, we just have to continue. We鈥檒l keep on racing and we鈥檒l see, even if winning the rally is starting to look complicated.鈥
Variawa, in a Toyota, finished 33 seconds ahead of Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit in a Mini.
Another South African Toyota driver, Henk Lategan retained the overall lead after finishing 12th on the day, 7mins 31sec behind Variawa.
Variawa is 41st, 7 hours 47 minutes 11 seconds behind after losing eight hours the day before following a head-on collision with team-mate and compatriot Giniel de Villiers.
Loeb sits 16th, almost an hour and a quarter off first. He also lost 30 minutes on Sunday when a fan problem caused his engine to overheat.
Reigning champion Carlos Sainz had retired on Monday after his Ford Raptor flipped, damaging its roll bar.
With rain forecast, the stage was shortened from the original 496 km.
In the motorbike competition, Spaniard Lorenzo Santolino, riding a Sherco and making his seventh appearance in the Dakar Rally, won a stage for the first time.
Australian Daniel Sanders still leads the overall standings.
The Rally through 黑料社区 ends on January 17 in the Empty Quarter desert.

The 25-year-old Belgian rider informed Soudal Quick-Step that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2026. The team said on Tuesday it has agreed to release him early.

鈥淎fter taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team鈥檚 ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season,鈥 Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement.

Evenepoel signed with Soudal Quick-Step at a young age after the squad鈥檚 former manager Patrick Lefevere spotted his immense potential. Under Lefevere鈥檚 supervision, Evenepoel won prestigious races, including the 2022 Spanish Vuelta, two stages of the Tour de France and two titles at Li猫ge-Bastogne-Li猫ge.

  • Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022
  • Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday

MONTREAL: Naomi Osaka powered into her first National Bank Open semifinal, beating No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Osaka advanced to face No. 16 seed Clara Tauson, who eliminated sixth-seeded Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4 in the first quarterfinal of the night.

Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022. She stepped away from tennis for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023.

The native of Japan is seeking her eighth career title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday. Mboko, who鈥檚 playing in her first main draw at the National Bank Open, will rise into the WTA鈥檚 top 50 after beginning the year outside the top 300.

The 18-year-old from Toronto has defeated five higher-ranked opponents en route to the semifinals, including top seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round.

Tauson dedicated her victory to her grandfather, Peter, during an on-court interview at IGA Stadium.

鈥淚 really wanted to win for him today,鈥 she told the crowd before breaking down in tears. 鈥淚 really wanted to come out here and show my best tennis for him, and hopefully he鈥檚 watching.鈥

Tauson said she only found out about her grandfather鈥檚 death on Monday, a day after she eliminated Wimbledon champion and No. 3-ranked Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3.

She spoke of him as one of the biggest supporters of her career.

鈥淗e used to coach me a little bit playing tennis and drove me to almost every single practice from my school,鈥 the 22-year-old native of Denmark said. 鈥淚t was tough news yesterday morning when I woke up, but I think it鈥檚 for the better. He was not feeling great for a while.鈥

Tauson hasn鈥檛 lost a set in the tournament.

Keys failed to convert two break chances in the first game. After the American held serve, Tauson won the ensuing five games to take the first set.

鈥淣ot my best performance out there today,鈥 said Keys, who won this year鈥檚 Australian Open. 鈥淪he played amazing tonight. She played incredibly well, she served really well. It was just one of those things where I felt like I kept trying different things, and she was just beating me.

鈥淲hen she鈥檚 serving like that, it鈥檚 going to be really hard to break her.鈥

Al-Hilal face ban from 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup
  • Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and was fined $133,000
  • The committee said the decision is subject to appeal

RIYADH: Holders Al-Hilal will be banned from the 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup if they qualify after withdrawing from this season鈥檚 four-team competition, the 黑料社区 Football Federation鈥檚 (SAFF) Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said on Tuesday.

The decision came after Al-Hilal pulled out of the Super Cup, scheduled to be played from August 19-23 in Hong Kong, citing player fatigue following their Club World Cup campaign. They lost 2-1 to Fluminense in the quarter-finals on July 4.

鈥淎l-Hilal refused to participate in the Saudi Super Cup for the 2025-2026 season after the official schedule for the competition was issued,鈥 the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said in a statement.

鈥淎s a result, the committee ruled that Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and fined the club 500,000 Saudi Riyals ($133,000) to be paid to the SAFF,鈥 the statement added.

In addition to the fine, the club was banned from participating in the 2026-27 Super Cup and stripped of any financial awards allocated for this season鈥檚 competition.

The committee said the decision is subject to appeal.

Al-Hilal have been asked for comment.

They won the Super Cup by beating Al-Nassr last season for a record-extending fifth title.

The Saudi Super Cup is contested by the winners and runners-up of the King鈥檚 Cup and Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal finished second in the 2024-25 Pro League behind Al-Ittihad.

Al-Hilal, who were due to face King鈥檚 Cup runners-up Al-Qadsiah in the Super Cup semifinals on August 20, have been replaced by AFC Champions League winners Al-Ahli.

Since Al-Ittihad won the Pro League and King鈥檚 Cup, the extra Super Cup spot was awarded to Al-Nassr 鈥 the third-placed team in the league 鈥 who they face in the semis on August 19.

England face searching Ashes questions after India series thriller

England face searching Ashes questions after India series thriller

LONDON: England suffered an agonizing six-run loss to India at the Oval on Monday as one of the most dramatic Test series of recent times ended in a 2-2 draw.
Their next major red-ball assignment is a five-match Ashes series away to arch-rivals Australia 鈥 where England have gone 15 Tests without a win 鈥 starting in November.
Here are some of the key issues that emerged from England鈥檚 rollercoaster contest with India and what they mean for their quest to regain the Ashes 鈥淒own Under.鈥
What England gain from having Ben Stokes in their side was never more evident than when their inspirational captain missed the fifth Test with a shoulder injury 鈥 a fresh worry following his history of hamstring trouble.
The 34-year-old all-rounder was the most threatening member of England鈥檚 attack against India, taking 17 wickets at 25 in 140 overs 鈥 the most he has bowled in a series.
Stokes also looked back to his best with the bat, scoring 141 in England鈥檚 mammoth total of 669 in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. By contrast specialist opener Zak Crawley failed to reach three figures in nine innings.
And at the Oval, the sight of vice-captain Ollie Pope running off to the dressing room to receive what appeared to be tactical guidance from Stokes did not say much for England鈥檚 depth of leadership.
England limited-overs captain Harry Brook, also a mainstay of the Test team and a lively skipper in the Stokes mold, could yet prove a better fit as vice-captain against Australia.
England have long believed a battery of genuinely fast bowlers is essential if they are to win an Ashes series in Australia for the first time since 2010/11.
But fitness issues could blight their best-laid plans.
Jofra Archer made an encouraging return to Test cricket against India but played just two matches as England looked to manage the express paceman鈥檚 workload.
Mark Wood, another bowler with genuine pace, has not played Test cricket for nearly 12 months and had knee surgery earlier this year.
The inconsistent Josh Tongue鈥檚 return of 19 wickets at under 30 in the India series could well see him selected for Ashes duty, with Gus Atkinson鈥檚 five-wicket haul on his return to Test duty at the Oval doing his cause no harm.
England, and Stokes in particular, have shown huge faith in Shoaib Bashir, a 21-year-old off-spinner unable to hold down a regular place in a county side but who has now taken 68 wickets in 19 Tests at 39.
In the India series, Bashir鈥檚 10 wickets came at an expensive average of 54.1, before a finger injury ruled him out of the last two Tests.
But Hampshire stalwart Liam Dawson failed to seize his chance in the drawn fourth Test, with Stokes appearing to tell the left-armer where he should be bowling on the Old Trafford pitch.
Leicestershire鈥檚 20-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, already England鈥檚 youngest Test cricketer, is another option.
England, however, didn鈥檛 bother with a specialist spinner at the Oval, deploying Joe Root and Jacob Bethell 鈥 clean bowled following a reckless charge down the pitch during a second-innings collapse 鈥 for a mere 11 overs combined.
But former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes England should stick with Bashir for the Ashes because of his similarity to outstanding Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
鈥淎ustralia will have probably three or four left-handers in their line-up which will aid the right-arm off-spinner as well,鈥 Ponting told Sky Sports. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 the over-spin that you need in Australia.鈥
