In recent years, the development of fusion energy has accelerated, promising to revolutionize clean energy production and reshape the global energy landscape.

According to the Fusion Industry Association, total investments in the fusion industry have surpassed $7.1 billion as of 2024, reflecting a surge driven by significant growth in both public and private funding.

Public funding alone increased by 57 percent in the last 12 months to $426 million, indicating government recognition of fusion鈥檚 potential.

This surge underscores the substantial benefits offered by fusion energy. Not only is it low carbon, but it is also inherently safe; fusion reactions are self-limiting and cannot cause meltdowns.

It is also reliable, with abundant fuel sources like deuterium, which is found in seawater, and tritium, which can be bred from lithium.

Globally, the race to harness fusion energy already includes 45 startups employing more than 4,000 people, all exploring various methods to achieve practical fusion power.

Helion Energy stands out in this burgeoning field, backed by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, who has invested more than $375 million in the company. Altman鈥檚 support underscores the growing confidence in fusion鈥檚 potential to transform the energy landscape.

In a landmark move signaling corporate faith in fusion鈥檚 viability, Microsoft committed to purchasing electricity from Helion鈥檚 inaugural fusion power plant which is scheduled for deployment in 2028.

Such commitments not only validate fusion technology but also accelerate its path to commercialization.

Fusion鈥檚 potential extends beyond electricity generation. It could potentially become the next general purpose technology, fundamentally transforming the energy industry.

Recent breakthroughs, like achieving net energy gain from fusion reactions 鈥 as demonstrated by the National Ignition Facility in December 2022, where scientists produced 3.15 megajoules of energy from an input of 2.05 megajoules 鈥 make this prospect more tangible.

As energy-intensive technologies like artificial intelligence surge, demanding ever-increasing power for data centers and computational processes, fusion energy offers a sustainable solution to meet these needs without exacerbating environmental concerns.

According to Goldman Sachs, AI is expected to drive a 160 percent increase in data center power demand by 2030.

Additionally, a study led by researcher Sasha Luccioni found that AI data center processing technology uses more than 30 times the energy of traditional task-specific software.

By introducing fusion, 黑料社区 can make substantial strides toward its national energy diversification goals.

Data centers are already responsible for around 1-1.5 percent of global electricity consumption and nearly 1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Energy Agency.

Studies suggest that fusion鈥檚 evolution could stimulate economic growth, necessitate new policies and foster international collaboration to manage its development responsibly.

黑料社区, through its Vision 2030 goals, has set a target of generating 50 percent of its energy from renewables by 2030, significantly diversifying its energy mix.

This commitment underscores the Kingdom鈥檚 focus on exploring new energy sources, increasing sustainability and fostering climate change leadership.

The potential benefits offered by fusion energy, which experts believe will provide cleaner, safer and more efficient power, could drive 黑料社区 to establish infrastructure and resources to harness this potential when breakthroughs are made.

While this ambition is within reach, the critical question remains: What is the long-term unique value proposition that 黑料社区 could realize as a result of pursuing fusion energy research and integration as part of its energy mix to meet its climate change goals?

Fusion energy results from combining two lighter atomic nuclei 鈥 typically isotopes of hydrogen such as deuterium and tritium 鈥 to form a heavier nucleus, releasing an enormous amount of energy in the process.

This reaction mirrors the energy production mechanism of the sun and holds the promise of providing a virtually limitless source of clean energy.

Unlike nuclear fission, which splits heavy atoms and generates long-lived radioactive waste, fusion produces minimal radioactive byproducts with significantly shorter half-lives, reducing long-term environmental and health concerns.

Additionally, fusion does not emit greenhouse gases during operation, making it an attractive option for minimizing carbon emissions.

黑料社区 aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, reinforcing its commitment to climate leadership. To sustain this momentum, the Kingdom can benefit from closely monitoring global fusion energy initiatives such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project.

ITER seeks to demonstrate the technological and scientific feasibility of fusion power in collaboration with the EU, Japan, China, Russia, the US, India and South Korea.

Meanwhile, the Fusion Industry Association says more than $4.7 billion has been injected into fusion energy start-ups, which signifies the ambitions of the private sector to achieve a breakthrough in fusion energy development.

Although not currently a member, 黑料社区鈥檚 considerable financial resources and dedication to clean energy position are promising for future inclusion in such partnerships.

Engaging with established leaders in fusion research could facilitate the Kingdom鈥檚 adoption of fusion energy technologies, accelerating its fusion adoption progress.

While fusion energy offers immense hope for a more sustainable and affordable energy future, experts stress that significant challenges must be addressed to make it a viable reality.

Countries aspiring to develop fusion energy infrastructure need to invest heavily in research and pilot projects to overcome current technological hurdles and lay the groundwork for large-scale reactor deployment.

For instance, initiating a fusion reaction requires achieving temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees centigrade 鈥 hotter than the sun鈥檚 core. Maintaining plasma stability in such extreme conditions is a monumental engineering feat.

Currently, fusion experiments often consume more energy than they produce. Constructing reactors capable of withstanding intense neutron bombardment demands the use of advanced and costly materials.

Moreover, fusion reactions rely on tritium, a scarce isotope of hydrogen that is difficult to produce in large quantities.

The global momentum behind fusion energy development presents a timely opportunity for 黑料社区 to invest strategically, collaborate internationally and position itself at the forefront of this transformative technology.

Embracing fusion energy could significantly boost the Kingdom鈥檚 long-term grid capacity and reduce carbon emissions from non-renewable sources, aligning seamlessly with its Vision 2030 objectives.

By introducing fusion, 黑料社区 can make substantial strides toward its national energy diversification goals.

This advancement would not only meet the soaring energy demands of critical sectors like desalination plants, which are essential for providing fresh water in the arid environment, but also support the burgeoning needs of energy-intensive technologies.

By seizing this futuristic opportunity, the Kingdom can further advance its national energy security, stimulate economic growth, and solidify its role as a global leader in sustainable energy innovation.

Police clash with protesters as thousands rally in Madagascar
  • The fresh rally came after the Gen Z movement called for a general strike
  • The president has appointed a new prime minister and called for dialogue

ANTANANARIVO: Several thousand anti-government demonstrators marched on Thursday through Madagascar鈥檚 capital, several of them injured when police cracked down on the latest youth-led protest of the past two weeks.
The fresh rally came after the Gen Z movement called for a general strike and rejected President Andry Rajoelina鈥檚 attempts to defuse the tensions rocking the Indian Ocean Island.
The president has appointed a new prime minister and called for dialogue in a bid to quell the near-daily protests that erupted on September 25.
The unrest was sparked by anger over regular and lengthy power and water shortages and evolved into a broader anti-government movement.
Security forces charged at protesters with armored vehicles, firing tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the initial crowds of about 1,000 that gathered on Thursday near Lake Anosy and started marching toward the Ambohijatovo Gardens, AFP reporters saw.
Street battles later broke out between the police and demonstrators, who responded by throwing stones.
Tear gas fired near a maternity ward forced nursing staff to move premature babies to the back of the building, an AFP journalist saw.
At least four people were injured by rubber bullets and two by projectiles from stun grenades, according to AFP reporters on the ground and two local medical organizations.
A man was left unconscious on the ground after being chased and severely beaten by security forces in the neighboring district of Anosibe before being evacuated by the Red Cross.
Conflict monitoring group ACLED said the month of September saw the second highest level of protests in Madagascar since it began collecting data in 1997, surpassed only by a surge before the 2023 vote.
- 鈥楶roblem is the system鈥 -

Hundreds of protesters again marched through the large southern coastal city of Toliara on Thursday, reports said.
鈥淲e鈥檙e still struggling,鈥 said Heritiana Rafanomezantsoa, one of the marchers in Antananarivo.
鈥淭he problem is the system. Our lives haven鈥檛 improved since we gained independence from France,鈥 the 35-year-old told AFP
Student Niaina Ramangason said Rajoelina 鈥 who himself came to power following an uprising in 2009 鈥 was 鈥渟elfish.鈥
鈥淗e makes promises but doesn鈥檛 keep them. I don鈥檛 believe in him anymore,鈥 the 20-year-old said.
After initially adopting a conciliatory tone and dismissing his entire government, Rajoelina appointed a military officer as prime minister on October 6.
He said the country 鈥渘o longer needs disturbances鈥 and chose to make the first appointments in his new cabinet to the ministries of the armed forces, public security and armed police.
More than 200 civil society organizations said on Thursday they were 鈥渃oncerned about a military drift in the country鈥檚 governance, rather than a search for appeasement and an end to repression.鈥
- Death toll -

The United Nations said on September 29 that at least 22 people had been killed in the first days of protests, a toll Rajoelina disputed on Wednesday.
鈥淭here have been 12 confirmed deaths and all of these individuals were looters and vandals,鈥 he told French-speaking television channel Reunion La Premiere.
The UN鈥檚 human rights office said some of the 22 victims were protesters or bystanders killed by security forces, while others had died in violence sparked by criminal gangs and looters in the wake of the demonstrations.
Twenty-eight protesters have been referred to the prosecutor鈥檚 office for formal charges, their lawyers said on Wednesday.
Five are in pre-trial detention in Tsiafahy prison, a jail described by Amnesty International as overcrowded and 鈥渉ellish.鈥
The protest movement has issued Rajoelina with a list of demands that includes a public apology for the violence against them but no longer mentions its previous calls for him to step down.
Despite rich natural resources, nearly three quarters of Madagascar鈥檚 population of 32 million lived below the poverty line in 2022, according to World Bank figures.
The Indian Ocean island鈥檚 per capita GDP fell from $812 in 1960 to $461 in 2025, according to the World Bank.

Russia sentences Bulgarian to jail after critical online posts
  • The ministry has said the case shows Russia鈥檚 鈥渟ystematic鈥 actions against dissent
  • The verdict is not final and can still be appealed

SOFIA: A Russian court has sentenced a Bulgarian-Russian dual national to three years in prison on charges of 鈥渏ustifying terrorism,鈥 Bulgaria鈥檚 foreign ministry told AFP on Thursday.
The ministry has said the case shows Russia鈥檚 鈥渟ystematic鈥 actions against dissent.
Russia has detained, fined or jailed large numbers of people, including Westerners, on charges of alleged treason, terrorism, sabotage and spying, in what rights groups say is a crackdown on dissent.
Since the start of Moscow鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, such trials have multiplied and have generally been accompanied by heavy sentences.
A Russian court sentenced the Bulgarian woman, who lives in Russia, on September 9 after finding her guilty of 鈥渏ustifying terrorism鈥 in online posts, a ministry spokesperson said.
The accused had described Crimea as being 鈥渋llegally occupied鈥 and had expressed support for the Russian Volunteer Corps 鈥 a unit of Russian nationals fighting for Ukraine classed as a 鈥渢errorist鈥 organization by Moscow 鈥 according to a written response this week by the ministry to parliament.
Bulgaria became aware of the case after the defendant鈥檚 sister notified the Bulgarian Embassy in Moscow in the spring.
The verdict is not final and can still be appealed.
According to the ministry, the case illustrates the Russian authorities鈥 鈥渟ystematic and targeted actions鈥 that are aimed at stifling freedom of expression and controlling information.
The actions result in 鈥渄isproportionate鈥 sanctions against opinions contrary to Moscow鈥檚 official line, 鈥減articularly in the context of Russia鈥檚 military aggression against Ukraine,鈥 it added.
A UN special rapporteur said in September that Russia systematically restricts freedom of expression and other rights as it seeks 鈥渢o crush civic space... eliminate political opposition, suppress culture (and) distort historical truth.鈥
