PRAIA, Cape Verde: A carnival-like atmosphere erupted in the streets of Cape Verde’s capital Praia recently after the tiny archipelago nation qualified for the World Cup for the first time.
Honking horns and street fireworks greeted euphoric fans pouring out of the Cape Verde National Stadium following the 3-0 victory over Eswatini, which secured the Blue Sharks a place in the 2026 finals, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In the street, people danced to the sound of reggae tunes and local funana music.

It was “an incredible moment,” 37-year-old fan Jorge Junior Livramento told AFP near the stadium.
“I don’t have words. I was at the stadium and I supported our team unconditionally,” he said.
Congratulating Cape Verde on their “historic moment,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the achievement was likely to “power a new generation of football lovers” across the nation.
Cape Verde, located off the coast of Senegal, is the country with the smallest population to represent Africa in the global showpiece, with just 550,000 inhabitants.
It becomes the second-least populous nation to reach the World Cup, after Iceland, with just over 350,000, at Russia 2018.

- ‘Victory for all’ -

“I shouted a lot during the match and now my voice is bad, but I am happy,” Praia resident Jose Vieira told AFP after the victory, which he watched live in the stadium.
The celebrations were expected to continue into the night with a concert at Praia’s municipal stadium featuring local artists such as Djodje and Soraia Ramos.

Blue Sharks Coach Pedro “Bubista” Brito told the press that “giving this happiness to these people is enormous,” adding that “it’s a victory for all the Cape Verdean people.”
Cape Verde won Group D with 23 points, four more than Cameroon, who hold the African record for World Cup appearances with eight. Cameroon drew 0-0 with Angola in Yaounde.
An archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and first attempted to reach the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
“It’s a special moment in this celebration of the 50th anniversary of our independence,” coach Bubista said.
“It’s a victory for all the Cape Verdean people and, above all, a victory for those who fought for our independence.”
On the island of Sao Vicente, Doris Da Luz, a trader and entrepreneur, told AFP that she was “very proud.”
“It’s a fight we’ve been trying to achieve for a long time and finally coach Bubista managed to get us there,” said Da Luz, dressed in the team’s blue.
The team reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals on their debut in 2013 and again in 2023 and are currently ranked 70th in the world.
“It’s time to celebrate,” 39-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha told reporters, explaining that he had “been dreaming of this moment since I was a child.”
Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana and Cape Verde have now won groups and filled six of the nine places automatically reserved for Africa at the 2026 World Cup.
Fan Jose Jorge Borges, a 60-year-old journalist, told AFP in Praia it was a very memorable moment for Cape Verdeans.
“The emotions are visible and difficult to describe,” he said.

’Very unlucky’ Odegaard faces weeks out, says Arteta
London — GBR
London, Oct 17, 2025 : Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday that captain Martin Odegaard could be missing until after the November international break due to the Norwegian’s latest injury setback.
Odegaard set an unwanted record by becoming the first player in Premier League history to be substituted before half-time in three consecutive starts when he came off with a knee injury against West Ham on October 3.
The 26-year-old had previously struggled with a recurring shoulder problem this season.
“It will be weeks. No definite date for his return, but he’s evolving well. Very unlucky, what’s happening with him and his injuries this season,” Arteta said ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Fulham on Saturday.
“It could be (after the next international break), but we’ll have to see how he progresses, how the knee’s healing, how he manages after the next steps in his rehab, so too early to give an answer,” he added.
Despite Odegaard’s disrupted start to the season and other injuries to Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, William Saliba and Noni Madueke, Arsenal have stormed to the top of the Premier League.
The Gunners lead title rivals Liverpool by one point after seven games as they seek to go one better after finishing third for three consecutive seasons.
Viktor Gyokeres was signed to end Arsenal’s need for a prolific striker.
The Swede, though, has so far scored just three times in 10 appearances and has not netted in his last eight matches for club and country.
Arteta backed the 27-year-old to come good and claimed to have been pleased with Gyokeres’ all-round performances so far.
“He brings so much to the team and watching the games back, I’m very pleased with what he’s given to the team,” added Arteta.
“I told him before the first meeting, ‘the nine that I want is a nine that when he doesn’t score for six or eight games, he can handle that. If not, you have to go somewhere else because the pressure, the expectation is going to be there.’
“If you put the number nine shirt on for Arsenal, you have to be able to say: ‘six games I don’t score, am I different player? Do I act in a different way?’
“I want much more of the same of what he’s doing. Once we have those opportunities, put them in. I’m sure it’s going to happen.”

Apple’s US F1 deal offers both a big opportunity for growth
  • The agreement will see Apple TV host all live action from grand prix weekends
  • Select races, and all practice sessions, will be freely available in the Apple TV app

TEXAS: Apple’s five-year deal for Formula One’s US broadcast rights, announced on Friday, gives both brands a major opportunity for growth in new directions and could ultimately lead to something bigger.
The agreement, with Apple replacing Walt Disney’s ESPN from 2026, will see Apple TV host all live action from grand prix weekends and has the potential to bring more people to Formula One through mobiles and apps.

Select races, and all practice sessions, will be freely available in the Apple TV app. Apple TV subscribers can also access Liberty Media-owned Formula One’s premium content without extra cost.
No details were given of how much Apple paid to add F1 to Major League Baseball and soccer in their existing sports offering.
“Thanks to Apple we are going to be ready to get into more houses and more in the culture of the American fans,” Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali told reporters in a video briefing.
“This is something that will represent a big step change in our approach in the media landscape. But we know the power of Apple ... we know the technology that they have.”

DEAL BUILDS ON F1 MOVIE’S BIG BOX OFFICE SUCCESS
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services and a Ferrari board member, said he hoped the deal became “what we’re doing forever.”
“I think there’s a huge opportunity for both of us,” he added. “There’s more opportunities to go. But we’re focused on this, make this a success and then it’ll be easier to keep growing and doing more.”

Liberty Media recently acquired MotoGP owners Dorna Sports while Liberty Global controls the all-electric Formula E championship.
There could also be further opportunities worldwide as other rights deals expire.
“We’re going to bring everything that Apple has to offer from our retail stores to all of our apps, including our sports app, podcasting, music, obviously Apple TV, books, all the capabilities,” said Cue.
“Our websites, all the touch points, Apple News.
“We have so many touch points with our customers and we’re going to bring the brunt of that, like we did with the movie, to the races and to qualifying.”
Apple’s “F1 The Movie,” starring Brad Pitt, was a runaway success this year and has grossed more than $628 million worldwide, according to IMDb’s Box Office Mojo.
Some 47 percent of new US Formula One fans, those who have followed the sport for five years or less, are aged 18-24 and more than half are female, according to a 2025 Global F1 Fan Survey.
“Though Formula One has grown tremendously, it still has a huge opportunity to grow so much more,” said Cue.
“And it’s not just racing, it’s culture here. These are incredible athletes, whether it’s fashion, music, all of the things that we will partner with them on gives us huge opportunities to expand.”
The United States now has three grands prix and the Netflix docu-series ‘Drive to Survive’ has turbocharged engagement in a country that the sport had failed to crack in previous decades.
Cue said Apple would also be broadcasting all races in Spanish.
Ian Holmes, Formula One’s director of media rights, said the deal gave the sport access to the broadest possible audience and employ the innovative Apple camera technology used in the movie.
“It’s very much a relationship across technology as it is content,” he said.

Pairings set for next month’s African World Cup playoffs
  • The four countries all advanced to the playoffs as the best runners-up across the nine African groups
  • FIFA, however, issued the October rankings on Friday, earlier than it had previously scheduled

ZURICH: Nigeria will take on Gabon and Cameroon will play the Democratic Republic of Congo in the World Cup African playoff semifinals next month, the latest FIFA rankings have confirmed.
The four countries all advanced to the playoffs as the best runners-up across the nine African groups.
There is the possibility of an added slot for Africa at next year’s finals with the winners of next month’s playoffs advancing to an intercontinental playoff tournament in March from which the last two World Cup places will be decided.
The pairings for the African playoffs have the highest-ranked team in the FIFA rankings of October 23 playing the lowest-ranked, while the second-highest face the third-highest.
FIFA, however, issued the October rankings on Friday, earlier than it had previously scheduled.
Nigeria rose to 41st with Cameroon 54th and DR Congo 60th.
Gabon jumped two places to 77th from the September 18 rankings.
The semis will be on November 13 before a deciding match three days later, with the winners progressing.
Morocco is hosting next month’s playoffs but the venues are yet to be announced.
The group phase of the African qualifiers concluded on Tuesday with all the group winners qualifying automatically for next year’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the US

UK authorities seek to reverse decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from Villa game
  • Maccabi Tel Aviv fans clashed violently with city residents in Amsterdam last season

LONDON: British officials said Friday they were working to reverse a ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans attending a Europa League game at Aston Villa next month because of security concerns, a decision that drew condemnation from politicians, sports organizations and Jewish groups.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the police recommendation to bar the visiting team’s fans from the Nov. 6 game was “the wrong decision,” and European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, urged British authorities to ensure the Israeli team’s fans could go to the match.

“UEFA wants fans to be able to travel and support their team in a safe, secure and welcoming environment, and encourages both teams and the competent authorities to agree on the implementation of appropriate measures necessary to allow this to happen,” it said in a statement.

Ian Murray, a minister in the department for culture, media and sport, said the government “will do everything we possibly can to resolve this issue.” He said Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy “will be meeting with the Home Office and other stakeholders today to try and see if there’s a way through this.”

Aston Villa said in a statement that police had informed the club that “they have public safety concerns outside the stadium bowl and the ability to deal with any potential protests on the night.”

West Midlands Police said it had deemed the match at Villa Park in Birmingham, central England, to be high risk “based on current intelligence and previous incidents,” including violence and hate crimes that took place when Maccabi Tel Aviv played Ajax in Amsterdam last season.

The fan ban was swiftly criticized by Starmer, who said “the role of the police is to ensure all football fans can enjoy the game, without fear of violence or intimidation.”

The game at Villa Park will be Maccabi Tel Aviv’s first away match in the Europa League since pro-Palestinian protests took place at the stadium in Thessaloniki, Greece when the club played PAOK on Sept. 24.

About 120 fans of the Israeli club traveled to Greece for that game and were held behind a police cordon before entering the venue.

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans clashed violently with city residents in Amsterdam last season when the team visited for a Europa League game against Ajax.

UEFA had been weighing a vote to suspend Israeli teams from its competitions before that was overtaken this month by the ceasefire in Gaza.

Maccabi Tel Aviv chief executive Jack Angelides, expressed “dismay about what this potentially is signaling.”

“I don’t use this term lightly but people ask, ‘What does antisemitism look like?’ And it’s often manifested as part of a process … in other words small events leading up to something that’s more sinister,” he told the BBC.

DUBAI: Baseball United, the first professional league focused on the Middle East and South Asia, has announced a partnership with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the leading media and entertainment company, to deliver games live to millions in India.

The collaboration with Z includes coverage of all 21 of Baseball United’s Season One games this November and December, and several primetime matches featuring the Mumbai Cobras, India’s first professional franchise.

Baseball United’s games will air on three of Z’s leading linear channels — Zee Cafe SD, &Flix SD and &Pictures HD — and stream on the Zee 5 app. Broadcasts will be in English and Hindi.

Baseball United’s inaugural season will include the league’s four founding franchises — Arabia Wolves, Mid East Falcons, Karachi Monarchs, and Mumbai Cobras.

The partnership includes full supplementary content on Zee 5, including player features, ballpark highlights, Baseball 101 clips, behind-the-scenes segments, and an original documentary on the building of the league.

Z will support the partnership with four weeks of promotion across its network, with teasers, ad spots, lower-thirds, and additional branded content. Both Baseball United and Z will also collaborate on social media posts and campaigns.

The league’s season begins with a historic matchup, as Mumbai takes on Karachi for a three-game “Subcontinent Series” on Nov. 14, 15 and 16.

The series will mark the first games in history for both franchises, as well as the first India-Pakistan professional matchups. The teams’ rosters have players from 25 countries, including six Indians on the Mumbai franchise.

Kash Shaikh, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Baseball United said he was excited at the collaboration with Z.

“This is a major milestone in our mission to bring professional baseball to India and the broader region, and it’s a significant moment for the more than 50 million baseball fans in India.

“Z is one of India’s most iconic broadcasters, and their combination of reach, relevance, and reputation make them an ideal partner to connect with fans across this great country.”

India has one of the world’s largest, youngest, and fastest-growing media markets. Z, which reaches over 800 million viewers, is one of India’s pioneering private broadcasters. Its flagship Zee TV launched in October 1992 as India’s first privately-held satellite channel.

Over the decades, Z has grown into a full-spectrum media and entertainment conglomerate, spanning general entertainment, movies, regional- and language-specific channels, and a major digital platform.

“At Z, we are committed to bringing world-class international sports to Indian audiences and establishing India as a global platform for sports consumption,” said Laxmi Shetty, head of advertisement revenue, broadcast and digital.

“India has a deeply entrenched bat-and-ball sporting culture, and we are excited to introduce millions of sports fans to the speed, strategy, and spectacle of professional baseball.

“With Hindi and English feeds, we are building a foundation for the sport of baseball that will entertain fans and create a wider passionate fanbase.”

Baseball United’s first full season begins Nov. 14 in Dubai with 21 games in 30 days, to be broadcast live with music and fan experiences. The season ends with the United Series Championship, from Dec. 12 to 14.

Supported by 20 Major League Baseball legends, including Mariano Rivera, Barry Larkin, Adrian Beltre and Albert Pujols, Baseball United aims to grow the game across the world’s most populous region.
