Mbapp茅 rewards Madrid鈥檚 long journey with hat trick in 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Champions League
  • The 15-time European champions traveled nearly 6,500 kilometers to play the game
  • Arda G眉ler sent Mbapp茅 though for his third goal in the 73rd

ALMATY: Kylian Mbapp茅 scored a hat trick as Real Madrid shrugged off any travel weariness in a 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
The 15-time European champions traveled nearly 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers) to play the game in the eastern Kazakh city, Kairat鈥檚 first home match in the competition.
The enthusiasm showed with Dastan Satpayev testing Thibault Courtois after just 13 seconds and Jorginho trying his luck a minute later.
Mbapp茅 settled any visiting nerves by dispatching a penalty in the 25th after goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza had brought down Franco Mastantuono.
Mbapp茅 went close again before the break but ultimately the visitors appeared content to let the ball circulate without forcing the initiative too much.
The second half started in the same vein until Courtois caught the Kairat defense out with a long clearance and Mbapp茅 lobbed the ball over Kalmurza in the 52nd for his second goal.
Kairat might have had a way back into the game when Dani Ceballos was penalized for an apparent foul on Valery Gromyko, but referee Marco Guida changed his mind after a VAR review.
Arda G眉ler sent Mbapp茅 though for his third goal in the 73rd, when the France star completed his fourth hat trick in the competition. Only Robert Lewandowski (6) and Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi (8) have more.
Substitute Eduardo Camavinga scored his first-ever goal in the competition 10 minutes later, and fellow substitute Brahim D铆az completed the scoring in stoppage time.
Atalanta came from behind to beat Club Brugge 2-1 in the other early game.

  • Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019
  • Prosecutors have accused Bartomeu of 鈥渄isloyal administration鈥 and of having 鈥渃aused damage鈥 to the club

BARCELONA: Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been accused by Spanish prosecutors of disloyal administration, according to documents seen by AFP on Tuesday.
Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019.
According to a court document seen by AFP, the prosecution has accused the former Barcelona president of 鈥渄isloyal administration鈥 and of having 鈥渃aused damage鈥 to the club by 鈥渇ailing to fulfil the duties of diligence and loyalty鈥 implied by his role.
The former Barca chief, in charge from 2014 to 2020, will have to explain alleged hidden commissions paid, most notably in the club鈥檚 signing of Brazil winger Malcom from Bordeaux in 2018 for over 40 million euros ($47 million).
Other areas in which there are apparent irregularities include the legal case surrounding the club鈥檚 signing of Neymar, and the Espai Barca project to transform the Camp Nou stadium and surrounding area.
Current Barcelona president Joan Laporta presented an in-depth report to prosecutors earlier this year, after hiring investigators to analyze how the club had been run in the years prior.
Barcelona have been in a tough financial position over the past few years after heavy spending during Bartomeu鈥檚 reign, including buying Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann for a combined total cost of more than 400 million euros.
A statement issued by Bartomeu鈥檚 lawyers said that although he may have 鈥渕ade mistakes鈥 during his reign, there is not 鈥渢he slightest indication that he has obtained any personal financial benefit鈥 as a result of his decisions while at the helm.

  • 鈥淵ou can either get results or make excuses. Whoever plays tomorrow is part of a real team,鈥 Enrique said
  • 鈥淲e are lucky to have very good players in every position and to have the finances to recruit very good players鈥

PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique refused to complain about the mounting injuries affecting his team before Wednesday鈥檚 Champions League match at Barcelona.
Defending champion PSG will be without star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ballon d鈥橭r winner Ousmane Demb茅l茅 and forward D茅sir茅 Dou茅.
They are all out injured along with central defender Marquinhos, the club captain, while PSG have doubts over the fitness of key midfielders Vitinha and Jo茫o Neves.
鈥淵ou can either get results or make excuses. Whoever plays tomorrow is part of a real team,鈥 Luis Enrique said Tuesday at a pre-match news conference. 鈥淲e are lucky to have very good players in every position and to have the finances to recruit very good players. So, if there鈥檚 a coach who can鈥檛 complain, then it鈥檚 me.鈥
Luis Enrique is uncertain if he will pick Vitinha, who came off in the first half against Auxerre on Saturday, or Neves, who missed the past two Ligue 1 games with a thigh injury.
鈥淲e will see how the players feel when they wake up tomorrow. It is not a decisive game, so we are calm,鈥 Luis Enrique said. 鈥淭he decision will come more from the players than from me.鈥
PSG began the defense of their first Champions League title with a 4-0 rout of Atalanta two weeks ago.
But a Barcelona team featuring the inspired passing of midfielder Pedri, the mesmeric runs of winger Lamine Yamal, and the lethal finishing of veteran Robert Lewandowski 鈥 third all-time with 105 Champions League goals 鈥 appears a far harder proposition. Hansi Flick鈥檚 team was a Champions League semifinalist last season.
鈥淲ithout doubt Pedri is like Harry Potter, I hope he doesn鈥檛 bring his magic wand tomorrow. We鈥檒l do all we can to make sure he is the least involved possible,鈥 said Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League as Barcelona coach in 2015 and played for the club as a standout midfielder.
鈥淭he two teams have the same philosophy and way of playing,鈥 he added. 鈥淭he key will be which team manages to keep the ball.鈥
Losing it exposes PSG to the counter-attacking of Yamal, who finished second behind Demb茅l茅 in the Ballon d鈥橭r vote and caused havoc with his runs down the right flank in the competition last season.
PSG right back Achraf Hakimi said Yamal 鈥渨ill be playing against the best left back in the world鈥 in Nuno Mendes.
鈥淗e is capable of stopping Lamine,鈥 Hakimi said. 鈥淭he important thing is not to leave (Yamal) one on one, so we will help (Mendes) out.鈥

DP World ILT 20 auction propels the tournament鈥檚 growth
  • Auctioneer in Dubai will be Richard Madley, a veteran of 10 Indian Premier League auctions since its inception in 2008
  • Madley has played club cricket in Surrey and is a qualified umpire

DUBAI: When the fourth edition of the DP World ILT20 kicks off on Dec. 2 in Dubai, there will be a difference in the way that some of the players will have been selected.
This will be by auction in Dubai on Wednesday, Oct. 1. It is the same method used by the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008.
Then, the auctioneer was Richard Madley, who conducted a further nine IPL auctions. By quirk of circumstance, it is Madley who will conduct ILT20鈥檚 first ever auction.
It was my pleasure to be introduced to him two days prior to the auction to learn more about his experiences, skills and hopes for the ILT20. It seems that he was fated to be and auctioneer. Both his father and father-in-law were auctioneers, whilst his mother-in-law was an antiques dealer.
He started young in collecting objects and now specializes, among other things, in oriental carpets. His love for cricket began at junior school in Cardiff, Wales, where dreams and ambitions of playing professionally were nurtured.
This has been the case for many other children, who, like Madley, realized that the dreams would never be realized. However, he did represent his native Wales at hockey.
Madley has played club cricket in Surrey and is a qualified umpire, but it is with the gavel in auctioneering that he has made his mark in cricket, acquiring the sobriquet of 鈥淗ammerman鈥 in India.
It was there, he says, that he realized that cricket had changed forever when M.S. Dhoni was bought for $1.5 million in the first IPL auction. Madley likened the event to the Wild West when nobody quite knew what they were doing.
Now, he sees his role as overseeing a fair distribution of players across franchises to achieve a balance between them. He believes that a knowledge of cricket helps in that process, as does humor.
His focus is firmly on the franchises. In the ILT20 auction he expects some surprises, but would not be drawn into more detail. There are players from upwards of thirty countries registered, so he is likely to be right.
The primary purpose of the franchise league auction has developed another wing, that of marketing and profile building. This has been evident in the IPL and was markedly so this year when the auction was held in Jeddah, sparking renewed rumors of 黑料社区鈥檚 motivations in cricket.
Today, these have been given a further boost by the news that DP World ILT20 is to join forces with the 黑料社区n Cricket Federation to advance cricket in the region. In the first place, it is intended that there will be increased opportunities for Saudi players to play in international tournaments.
These are vital to nurture their development and allow them to carry their gained knowledge back into the domestic game. In the upcoming auction, each franchise must secure at least one player from 黑料社区, so the process is about start.
There is also an intent that, in forthcoming seasons, the partnership will witness ILT20 matches being played in 黑料社区. This will require the provision of facilities of appropriate standards. No timescale was specified for this ambition, but the agreement should provide a basis for its advancement.
The partnership also aligns with ILT20鈥檚 strategy to expand and enrich cricket across the Gulf region. This is already evident in its links with Kuwait Cricket with which it established a strategic partnership in June 2025 to assist in the growth and promotion of cricket in that country.
The first evidence of this was the DP World ILT20 Development Tournament, played between Sept. 4-12, 2025.
It is clear that the ILT20 is embarked on a two-pronged strategy of expanding its reach with the Gulf and enhancing its profile through the player auction initiative.
These are exciting times for cricket in the region.

Barca star Yamal must 鈥榳ork hard鈥 to reach top level, says Flick
  • 鈥(Calling him) super, super, super... I don鈥檛 like this... he鈥檚 18 years old and for me he also has to focus on working hard,鈥 Flick told reporters
  • 鈥淚t鈥檚 not only about playing with the ball, it鈥檚 also defending鈥

BARCELONA: Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Tuesday if teenage star Lamine Yamal is to improve he must focus on improving his work rate, ahead of the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
The holders visit Barcelona on Wednesday and 18-year-old winger Yamal is keen to shine after finishing as runner-up at the Ballon d鈥橭r gala last week, behind PSG鈥檚 Ousmane Dembele.
Yamal returned from a groin injury on Sunday against Real Sociedad in La Liga and provided an assist a minute after coming off the bench during a bright second-half cameo.
鈥(Calling him) super, super, super... I don鈥檛 like this... he鈥檚 18 years old and for me he also has to focus on working hard,鈥 Flick told reporters.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not always easy, with talent you can get to this point, but to reach the next level, one or two steps more 鈥 and I think he鈥檚 able to do that 鈥 he has to work hard.鈥
Last season Barcelona won a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, but fell just short in the Champions League, beaten in the semifinals by Inter Milan despite two sensational displays by Yamal.
Against Luis Enrique鈥檚 attacking PSG side Flick demanded Yamal and his team-mates knuckle down when the French champions are in possession.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not only about playing with the ball, it鈥檚 also defending,鈥 continued Flick.
鈥淭his is what we need from every player 鈥 even a great player with the ball like him 鈥 and this makes the difference.鈥
Flick said to beat PSG his team had to concentrate from 鈥渢he first second to the end of the match鈥 and play at their highest level.

- Rashford has 鈥榓rrived鈥 -

The coach also praised Marcus Rashford, who has established himself on the left flank for Barca.
With Raphinha out injured, Rashford is set to start against PSG. The forward, on loan from Manchester United, netted twice in Barcelona鈥檚 opening Champions League win at Newcastle.
鈥淓veryone can see it in the last games, the Newcastle match gives him a lot of confidence and now he鈥檚 here, he鈥檚 now arrived in Barcelona,鈥 said Flick.
鈥淭his is not always easy, to come to La Liga... with different opponents, a different style of how we play football, he鈥檚 adapted (well).鈥
PSG will be without first-choice attackers Dembele, formerly a Barca player, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, among other missing stars.
Barca midfielder Pedri said he considered his team favorites to win the game.
鈥淧SG are one of the best teams in the world, and we are the best 鈥 or at least that鈥檚 how I see it,鈥 he told reporters.
The French side beat Barca 4-1 the last time the teams met, in the 2024 quarter-finals, after Barca defender Ronald Araujo was sent off. PSG progressed 6-4 on aggregate.
鈥淓very Barca fan knows that we were close to going through two seasons ago,鈥 said Pedri.
鈥淭here鈥檚 always revenge in football and that鈥檚 what we want 鈥 it鈥檚 the kind of game that鈥檚 most enjoyable.鈥
