Leveling Up: Day One Wrap-Up of the New Global Sport Conference 2025
  • Kingdom unveiled an ambitious master plan to solidify its position as a global esports powerhouse, announcing that the Esport Nations Cup will launch in November 2026

RIYADH: Riyadh didn’t just host a conference this weekend — it made history. Day One of the New Global Sport Conference 2025 (NGSC) transformed the Four Seasons Hotel into a global hub for the future of gaming, esports, and sports. More than 1,500 leaders, innovators, and creators from around the world came together to discuss one question: What comes next for the world of play?

And came to play in a big way. The Kingdom unveiled an ambitious master plan to solidify its position as a global esports powerhouse, announcing that the Esport Nations Cup will launch in November 2026 in Riyadh. The tournament promises to build national pride and deliver the kind of iconic moments gamers will remember for generations.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar, president of the Saudi Esports Federation, captured the transformation brought about by introducing international esports events to the Kingdom perfectly. “Three million people visited Riyadh in the middle of summer, despite the heat, to attend events like the Esports World Cup and the New Global Sport Conference,” he said. “These were times when, in the past, everything would shut down — restaurants, stores, hotels — but now, thanks to gaming and esports, the city is operating at full capacity.”

The investment driving this transformation is just as bold. Speaking at the conference, Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih said: “The gaming and esports sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, and the Kingdom views it as the ‘new oil,’ as it relies on our most important strategic resource — human capital.”

Another official added: “We are making massive investments in the esports sector because it connects technology, education, tourism, and innovation.”

The community-driven side of this growth is just as significant. Faisal Bin Homran, chief product officer of the Esports World Cup Foundation, highlighted the importance of building relationships with the players, producers and fans who make the ecosystem thrive.

“We are community-powered, and that’s what keeps us close to the players, clubs, publishers, and fans — whether they’re here on the ground or across the globe. By listening to what they want, we’ve been able to grow faster and build a stronger esports fandom in . This year alone, we saw over 200 clubs and 2,000 players from more than 100 nations participate, with over 10,000 players competing in qualifiers. It shows that, beyond prize money, the level of competition and passion for esports is higher than ever — and we’re proud to be part of that growth.”

That vision of progress and pride resonated throughout the conference. As Ralf Reichert, CEO of the EWCF, noted, “When nations compete, the rules remain the same, but the meaning rises. Victories happen; they are not just wins, they become national memories.”

Throughout the day, the sessions were as dynamic as the announcements. Ubisoft took the audience on a journey through its evolution from a small publisher to a global powerhouse, hinting at how legacy titles will continue to evolve for future generations. Industry experts explored how mobile platforms are now the backbone of global gaming growth, with one strategist emphasizing, “Mobile gaming isn’t the future — it’s the present. If you’re not building for the phone in someone’s pocket, you’re missing billions of players ready to connect, compete, and create.”

Others dove into the power of intellectual property, describing IP as “the currency of the next era of gaming,” fueling everything from collaborations to film and streaming adaptations.

The diversity of voices on stage reflected the global reach and potential of the industry.

Jumana Haj-Ahmad of UNICEF spoke about the social impact of gaming. “With around 3.3 billion gamers globally, gaming is more than entertainment; it’s a platform for learning and connection,” she said. “But that also means we must set global standards to ensure that every gamer’s experience is safe, inclusive, and impactful.”

Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, praised the region’s rising influence: “The Arabic community has showed active engagement on Twitch for years. It’s been incredible to finally support this community by localizing our platform. This isn’t just a market; it’s a vibrant, creative hub that’s influencing gaming culture globally.”

What truly stood out, though, was the energy pulsing through every corner of the venue. Between sessions, hallways became buzzing networking arenas where developers pitched ideas to investors, creators discussed collaborations, and thought leaders mapped out the next wave of innovation.

As the first day wrapped up, excitement filled the air with conversations echoing through the halls. Day two will highlight how AI and gaming are shaping the future of interactive communities and expanding the global game.

The next era of global gaming is being written in Riyadh. And for the gaming community, that means bigger stages, bolder opportunities, and stories that will define a generation.

  • Revving up the remaining crowd at the arena where he won the Olympic title in 2021, the 33-year-old sent the disc soaring in to the sky and past the 70-meter line for his season’s best throw of 70.47m and a third world title
  • Stahl: Mentally, I was ready for the last throw. I prepared myself for it. This is my favorite arena of all time. It was special in 2021, and it has been special again tonight

TOKYO: Former Olympic champion Daniel Stahl of Sweden won the last gold medal of the 2025 World Athletics Championships on Sunday with the penultimate throw of a men’s discus final delayed for more than two hours by rain.

World record holder Mykolas Alekna managed the only legal throw before the heavens opened at the National Stadium and the athletes were removed from the arena for safety reasons.

They returned after all the other events and the official closing ceremony had been completed, an army of volunteers wiping down the throwing circle with towels between attempts as the rain persisted.

“I have trained for many years in the rain and know that it usually rains in Tokyo in September-October,” Stahl told Swedish broadcaster SVT Sport.

“It’s important to keep the focus because there can be delays and it can take a few hours.”

Alekna lays down marker

Lithuanian Alekna laid down a marker with a throw of 67.84m on his second attempt which led the final until Stahl took to the circle for his last shot at the title.

Revving up the remaining crowd at the arena where he won the Olympic title in 2021, the 33-year-old sent the disc soaring in to the sky and past the 70-meter line for his season’s best throw of 70.47m and a third world title.

“Mentally, I was ready for the last throw. I prepared myself for it,” Stahl said.

“This is my favorite arena of all time. It was special in 2021, and it has been special again tonight.”

Alekna, 22, fouled his last attempt and finished second to add to his bronze at the last world championships and silver in 2022 but remained without a title to match the two his father Virgilijus won in discus in 2003 and 2005.

“Having the men’s discus throw as the last event of the championships, I don’t think it ever happened before,” Alekna said.

“At first, after the competition finished, I was a little disappointed. But I know I did everything I could to fight for the gold.”

Alex Rose took bronze with a throw of 66.96m on his fifth attempt to knock Australia’s Matt Denny out of third place and give Samoa a first world championship medal.

“This is one of the greatest moments of my entire life and it’s been 20 years in the making,” Rose said.

“To come back here and do what I just did, there is no feeling like it. The young Pacific Island athletes never give up. I work a full-time job and took time off to from my company to compete here.”

  • Fritz battles past Zverev in final match to seal 15-9 win
  • Team Europe fight back on last day but come up short

SAN FRANCISCO: Taylor Fritz delivered the decisive blow at the Laver Cup on Sunday by beating Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6(4) as Team World completed a 15-9 win over Team Europe to reclaim the men’s team competition title in San Francisco.

The victory marked Team World’s third triumph in the eight editions of the competition following back-to-back wins in 2022 and 2023, and sparked jubilant celebrations from captain Andre Agassi’s side at the Chase Center.

“We’re going to have a fun night. We’re definitely popping champagne in the locker room in a few minutes,” Fritz said.

“The energy from the team, ... the moments of winning feel so much better and the moments of losing feel so much worse. You’re doing it for all these guys. It fires me up so much. I always feel I play my best tennis in team environments.

“Seeing these guys on the bench getting pumped up, seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering for me, it’s just impossible not to give everything you have in every point.”

Team World had built a big 9-3 lead after a clean sweep on Saturday, but with wins worth three points on the final day there was still much to play for with four matches scheduled to reach the 13 points needed to prevail.

Carlos Alcaraz teamed up with Norway’s Casper Ruud to open proceedings, earning a 7-6(4) 6-1 win over American pair Alex Michelsen and Reilly Opelka to narrow the gap.

However, Team Europe found themselves on the back foot again when Australia’s Alex De Minaur breezed past 20-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik 6-3 6-4 it make it 12-6 in favor of Team World.

US Open champion Alcaraz kept Team Europe’s hopes alive by dispatching Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 6-2 6-1, leaving his team just three points adrift of their opponents.

Zverev then had the opportunity to level the scores at 12-12 and force a one-set doubles playoff but the German was unable to get past Fritz.

The 2026 edition of the competition will take place at London’s O2 Arena.

Torres double helps Barcelona cruise to 3-0 victory over Getafe
  • Barca’s next test will be an away trip to face Real Oviedo on Thursday

BARCELONA: Ferran Torres scored twice as Barcelona cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Getafe in LaLiga on Sunday, with Dani Olmo adding the third goal and an assist in another impressive display by Hansi Flick’s side at their makeshift home venue.
The win keeps the unbeaten Catalans second in the standings with 13 points, trailing leaders Real Madrid by two points after Los Blancos maintained their flawless record with five wins from five matches by beating Espanyol on Saturday.
Playing in front of 6,000 rain-soaked fans at their Sant Joan Despi training ground, Barcelona controlled proceedings from the outset, showcasing their depth and resilience despite missing Lamine Yamal for the third consecutive game due to injury.
Torres, who got another chance to start in place of Robert Lewandowski in Flick’s rotation policy, opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a brilliant team move, firing past David Soria after Olmo’s clever back-heel set him up perfectly.
The Spanish forward doubled the advantage in the 34th minute, beating the offside trap from Raphinha’s through ball before delivering a tidy finish just inside the left post.
The 25-year-old Spanish international nearly completed his hat-trick before halftime but ended up striking the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after rounding the keeper.
The double takes him to four goals in five games this season, placing him second in the LaLiga scoring charts, just one goal behind Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe.
“I know I can be a starter at Barcelona and I need to take advantage of every opportunity I get. I’m confident many more goals will come,” Torres told DAZN.
“We have quality players who can find space, and we’ve done well in that regard and I’m glad that we won another one in decisive fashion.”
Barcelona continued to dominate after the break, and Marcus Rashford, who was rested following his midweek Champions League heroics against Newcastle, came off the bench to make an immediate impact.
The England international surged down the right flank in the 63rd minute and crossed to Olmo, who scored from inside the box to seal the victory.
The result continued Barca’s strong start to the campaign as they adapt to life at their cramped training ground venue as the renovations of their iconic Camp Nou have fallen nine months behind schedule.
The Lluis Companys Olympic stadium, which has been Barca’s base for the last three years, was not available on Sunday.
Barca’s next test will be an away trip to face Real Oviedo on Thursday, while eighth-placed Getafe will host Alaves on Wednesday.

Arsenal late show denies Man City, Villa still winless
  • Martinelli came off the bench to score for the second time in a week to salvage a 1-1 draw, but both sides lost more ground to Premier League leaders Liverpool

LONDON: Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd minute equalizer saved Arsenal’s Premier League title bid from a damaging defeat to Manchester City, while Aston Villa remain winless after a limp 1-1 draw at 10-man Sunderland.
The Gunners were heading to a second defeat in five Premier League games due to Erling Haaland’s early strike on the counter-attack for City.
Martinelli came off the bench to score for the second time in a week to salvage a 1-1 draw, but both sides lost more ground to Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Arsenal went second, five points behind the champions, while City are eight points off the top in ninth.
“Very disappointed not to win,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. “I think we played better than last year when we beat them (5-1).”
Arteta’s men had not conceded from open play in their first five Premier League and Champions League games this season, but were opened up on nine minutes by the scintillating form of arguably the world’s best striker.
Haaland started the move deep inside his own half with a lay-off to Tijjani Reijnders and then sprinted upfield to receive the Dutch international’s pass before coolly slotting beyond David Raya.
The Norwegian already has 13 goals for club and country in just eight games this season.
At the other end, City are reaping immediate dividends from the signing of giant Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Noni Madueke’s powerful near post strike was repelled by Donnarumma in what was Arsenal’s best attempt in a flat first-half performance.
Mikel Arteta threw on the creative talents of Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze at the start of the second period.
Eze tested Donnarumma once more but the Gunners struggled to break down City’s massed ranks of defense, with Guardiola even sacrificing Haaland and Phil Foden in the second half to bolster his back line.
However, that gamble backfired when Martinelli galloped onto Eze’s ball over the top and looped a fantastic finish over Donnarumma.
“We don’t try to be like this but when the opponent is better we defend deeper and counter-attack,” said Guardiola.

- Villa lose ‘identity’ -

Villa’s rise over recent years under the tutelage of Unai Emery has ground to a halt as they remain in the bottom three with just three points from their opening five games.
Emery’s men could barely have asked for a better opportunity to end their wait for victory after Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava was shown a red card on 33 minutes for kicking out at Matty Cash.
Villa had failed to score in their previous four league games but did finally break that drought when Cash tried his luck from long range and Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs was deceived by the power and swerve on the full-back’s strike.
The lead lasted just eight minutes, though, as Wilson Isidor pounced on Granit Xhaka’s header forward for his third goal in as many games at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League.
“It should have been easier to take advantage (against 10 men) but we were not playing with our identity, with the ideas we have been building in the last three years,” said Emery.
Sunderland have made a great start to their quest to end the run of promoted sides being relegated straight back to the Championship.
The Black Cats sit seventh after losing only one of their opening five fixtures.
Newcastle are also struggling for goals in the absence of the departed Alexander Isak.
Eddie Howe’s men have drawn all three of their away games this season 0-0 and would have been happy just to come away from Bournemouth with a point after a short turnaround from their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona on Thursday.

Burke hits Bundesliga hat trick as Union Berlin beats Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3, Dortmund wins

BERLIN: Scottish forward Oliver Burke scored a Bundesliga hat trick as Union Berlin delivered a master class in counterattacking soccer before holding on to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 away on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Ilyas Ansah also starred, capitalizing on a mix-up in the Frankfurt defense to open the scoring in the ninth minute.
Ansah was involved again before Serbian forward Andrej Ilić sent Burke through for his first goal in the 32nd.
Nathaniel Brown pulled one back before the break but Frankfurt’s hopes of an equalizer were dented when Ansah got up after a foul and eluded two defenders before playing the ball out to Ilić, who crossed for Burke to make it 3-1 in the 53rd.
Ilić also set up the next goal three minutes for his fourth assist. Burke finished with a delicate chip over Kaua Santos in the Frankfurt goal.
One young Frankfurt fan cried in disappointment.
But Can Uzun pulled one back in the 80th and Frankfurt got a penalty when Jonathan Burkardt went down spectacularly. Leopold Querfeld had his hand near the Frankfurt forward’s neck and was penalized after a VAR check. Burkardt stayed cool to score from the spot in the 87th.
Union coach Steffen Baumgart was sent off shortly afterward for kicking a paper cup in frustration.
Dortmund delight
Karim Adeyemi’s first-half rocket from 18 meters (yards) was enough for Borussia Dortmund to beat Wolfsburg 1-0 for its third straight Bundesliga win.
Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck returned after a six-month injury layoff because of a meniscus tear in his knee and played the whole game.
Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen made his Wolfsburg debut on the hour-mark but couldn’t prevent the team’s first league loss of the season.
Dortmund is second in the league, two points behind Bayern Munich.
Gladbach’s first goal
Haris Tabaković scored Borussia Mönchengladbach’s first league goal of the season to earn a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the team’s first match since firing Gerardo Seoane as coach.
Tabaković equalized with a header off a corner in the second minute of stoppage time for Gladbach to get a deserved point in its first game under interim coach Eugen Polanski, previously the under-23 team coach.
American midfielder Malik Tillman put Leverkusen ahead on a counterattack in the 70th, but the home team’s performance shows there is still much work to do for new coach Kasper Hjulmand. He inherited the rebuilding project from Erik ten Hag, fired after just three games in charge.
