  • John bin London praises 鈥榥ever quit鈥 attitude of the Kingdom鈥檚 people

RIYADH: British content creator and social influencer John bin London has said he is amazed at the resilience of 黑料社区 and its people and believes nothing will stop the Kingdom鈥檚 success.

Bin London, a native of Nottingham, England, who grew up in Abu Dhabi, was the first guest on the seventh season of The Mayman Show.

He expressed his admiration of the Saudi people and the Kingdom鈥檚 rapid transformation.

鈥淪audis have a 鈥榥othing will stop us or will get in our way and we will succeed鈥 (attitude),鈥 he said. 鈥淭his is something that I saw within the people.鈥

He added that whether it was Telfaz 11 鈥 a creative media studio led by an enthusiastic team of storytellers and social influencers 鈥 or students he met from small Saudi villages who had traveled to the UK to obtain university degrees, everyone seemed to have a 鈥渘ever quit鈥 mentality.

Bin London also used the partial privatization of oil giant Saudi Aramco as a prime example of the Kingdom鈥檚 flourishing economy potential and appeal.

The initial public offering saw 100 percent of the shares transferred to the Public Investment Fund. Some 95 percent remained with the sovereign wealth fund, with the other 5 percent floated to private investors.

鈥淭he economics say, 鈥極h this is not going to work, and if it fails this and that,鈥 and then in a few years, what did we see? We saw a growth of 150 percent,鈥 said bin London.

He also highlighted NEOM鈥檚 The Line project. Built on 34 sq. km, it will eventually accommodate 9 million people with a reduced infrastructure footprint, creating new methods of efficiency.

鈥淚 remember, not long ago, people doubted The Line and then suddenly they saw the trucks going in, and The Line being built, this shut them up,鈥 he said.

Bin London鈥檚 view of Saudi perseverance did not just come from observing projects and financial deals, however. He firmly believes that success comes from the people behind it 鈥 starting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman: 鈥淚听think it was obvious to everyone who was following and paying attention what was going to happen in this country.鈥

The influencer, who is fluent in Arabic and has also mastered the Najdi Arabic dialect, creates content in the language to advocate for the opportunities offered in the land he has decided to make his home.

鈥淚 started picking up on vocabulary, pronunciation, from their dialects. It was, I guess, an unconscious thing,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t was just who you hear around you, how they speak. You start copying it and then later on a lot of my friends were from the Otaibi tribe, which 鈥 spreads from Taif, Hijaz and into Najd.鈥

The Briton lauds many Saudi tourist destinations but says Diriyah, the Kingdom鈥檚 birthplace and home of At-Turaif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will always have a special place in his heart.

鈥淒iriyah is one of my favorite places. It was somewhere that before my first visit to 黑料社区, which was in the end of 2022, I literally dreamt about visiting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the jewel of the Kingdom, it鈥檚 the place of the Al-Saud family, who created this country.

鈥淚 used to watch the videos and see the pictures and I want(ed) to visit the museums, like it was literally a dream, so much so that the first time I came I woke up super early 鈥 and I鈥檓 not a morning person 鈥 with excitement to go visit Diriyah,鈥 he said.

The excitement of that visit, he recalled, meant he spent an entire day wandering around and taking in the depth of history and captivating surroundings.

  • A Saudi-developed navigation platform signals a deeper shift in how smart cities are designed

JEDDAH: As cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah grow at an unprecedented pace, they face mounting pressures that come with rapid urban expansion: increased traffic, infrastructure demands, and changing mobility patterns.

These challenges have sparked new conversations 鈥 and innovations 鈥 to support evolving everyday life.

Among the latest digital tools to emerge is Balady+, a 黑料社区-developed navigation app that is gaining traction with more than 1 million downloads on Google Play according to the app鈥檚 listing.

As the country continues its digital transformation, mobility solutions such as Balady+ are becoming a part of the conversation on how to make urban environments more efficient, accessible and responsive. (Supplied)

Launched in May, the app offers a locally tailored alternative to global platforms such as Google Maps and Waze to address navigation needs across Saudi cities.

Developed by Balady, a subsidiary of NHC Innovation, the app鈥檚 features include real-time traffic updates, indoor navigation in malls and multistory buildings, and alerts for roadworks and speed bumps with accurate spatial and timing information.

Balady+, a Saudi-developed navigation app, is gaining traction with more than 1 million downloads on Google Play.

A notable moment for the platform came during this year鈥檚 Hajj season, when Balady+ collaborated with the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites to support pilgrims with an interactive mapping system.

Yasser Alobaidan, CEO of Balady+

Over 11,000 key landmarks 鈥 including mosque entrances and exits, surrounding streets, hospitals, Red Crescent stations, restrooms, fountains, and more than 160 critical facilities 鈥 were updated in real time to ease the flow of people through dense and high-pressure areas.

鈥淣avigation apps aren鈥檛 just tools anymore; they鈥檙e daily essentials,鈥 said Abdulrahman Al-Babtain, a Riyadh-based commuter who has been using Balady+ for the past two months.

鈥淲hat makes this app more useful for me is how it reflects the real condition of roads, especially when it comes to closures or construction zones.鈥

Built with an artificial intelligence-powered search engine, the app has generated a mix of enthusiasm and thoughtful critique from users on app stores.

Many have praised its realistic 3D mapping, with comments including 鈥渆xtraordinary鈥 and 鈥渃ustom made鈥 to better visualize surroundings.

Some reviews highlight standout features such as the 鈥渟nap and send鈥 municipal reporting tool, with one user noting that a damaged road was fixed within 12 hours of being reported.

Adel Alzahrani, ROSHN executive director of community development charters

While one review described the app as a 鈥渄ecent alternative to Google Maps,鈥 others note a learning curve for new users and hope for future updates that make the interface more user-friendly and inclusive.

According to Al-Babtain, speed-bump alerts and government data integrations are particularly helpful in avoiding unexpected delays during his daily commute.

鈥淭he GPS is smart, but what really matters is having the most current local info 鈥 and that鈥檚 where Balady+ wins,鈥 he said.

If we design cities for cars, we get traffic. If we design cities for people, we get life.

Adel Alzahrani, ROSHN executive director of community development charters

For Adel Alzahrani, executive director of community development charters at ROSHN, the app is part of a larger conversation about urban design and mobility.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not just developing real estate 鈥 we鈥檙e influencing how people move, live, and interact. Mobility behavior starts with design. I often say the cities of the future won鈥檛 be shaped by concrete alone 鈥 they鈥檒l be sculpted by intelligence, data, and empathy,鈥 he said.

While international apps dominate global markets, Alzahrani 鈥 who has used them all 鈥 sees Balady+ as an attempt to address local needs through an initiative that is 鈥渃ulturally aware, government-backed, and citizen-focused.鈥

鈥淚f we design cities for cars, we get traffic. If we design cities for people, we get life,鈥 he said.

As Saudi cities are increasingly digitized, apps such as Balady+ represent a broader shift in how people interact with their surroundings, not just as commuters but also data contributors and active participants in shaping smart urban systems.

Yasser Alobaidan, CEO of the app, told Arab News it was built on a combination of local and global technologies.

It was 鈥渃reated through 3D modelling programs for areas like Hajj camps, the Grand Mosque, the Prophet鈥檚 Mosque, and key landmarks across cities 鈥 and global technologies that convert residential and commercial buildings into 3D visualizations.鈥

鈥淲ork is currently underway to render the main roads across Saudi cities in 3D to provide drivers with a more realistic navigation experience,鈥 he added.

Available on Android, iOS, and Huawei Store, it supports both Arabic and English, and features a voice assistant that guides users in both languages.

Alobaidan explained the technical challenges of rendering 3D environments, such the Grand Mosque and Hajj camps, on users鈥 mobile devices.

鈥淢anaging and optimizing the processing power and battery usage on users鈥 mobile devices when rendering 3D models was not easy.鈥

As the country continues its digital transformation, mobility solutions such as Balady+ are becoming a part of the conversation on how to make urban environments more efficient, accessible and responsive.

鈥満诹仙缜 stands at a unique moment. We have the chance to leapfrog the mistakes of car-first urbanism and become a global model of people-centered innovation 鈥 where design, policy, and technology converge to create cities that breathe, move, and serve with grace,鈥 Alzahrani explained.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just a digital tool, it鈥檚 a statement of intent. It tells us that 黑料社区 isn鈥檛 just building smart cities 鈥 we鈥檙e designing smarter ways to live in them.鈥

Looking ahead, he said: 鈥淚鈥檇 love to see Balady+ connect with multimodal platforms, so users can seamlessly move between metro, bus, walking, or even autonomous shuttles.

鈥淚鈥檇 also advocate for opening up APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), so urban developers and municipal agencies can build on top of the platform, creating custom layers for districts or temporary events.鈥

As the Kingdom rethinks how cities function, the role of local digital infrastructure is becoming more central.

Balady+ may not be the only tool in that transition, but it points to a growing appetite for locally developed, tech-driven solutions to urban challenges.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not following global models. It鈥檚 redefining them through a uniquely Saudi lens. And I think that鈥檚 something worth celebrating,鈥 Alzahrani said.
