  • John bin London praises 鈥榥ever quit鈥 attitude of the Kingdom鈥檚 people

RIYADH: British content creator and social influencer John bin London has said he is amazed at the resilience of 黑料社区 and its people and believes nothing will stop the Kingdom鈥檚 success.

Bin London, a native of Nottingham, England, who grew up in Abu Dhabi, was the first guest on the seventh season of The Mayman Show.

He expressed his admiration of the Saudi people and the Kingdom鈥檚 rapid transformation.

鈥淪audis have a 鈥榥othing will stop us or will get in our way and we will succeed鈥 (attitude),鈥 he said. 鈥淭his is something that I saw within the people.鈥

He added that whether it was Telfaz 11 鈥 a creative media studio led by an enthusiastic team of storytellers and social influencers 鈥 or students he met from small Saudi villages who had traveled to the UK to obtain university degrees, everyone seemed to have a 鈥渘ever quit鈥 mentality.

Bin London also used the partial privatization of oil giant Saudi Aramco as a prime example of the Kingdom鈥檚 flourishing economy potential and appeal.

The initial public offering saw 100 percent of the shares transferred to the Public Investment Fund. Some 95 percent remained with the sovereign wealth fund, with the other 5 percent floated to private investors.

鈥淭he economics say, 鈥極h this is not going to work, and if it fails this and that,鈥 and then in a few years, what did we see? We saw a growth of 150 percent,鈥 said bin London.

He also highlighted NEOM鈥檚 The Line project. Built on 34 sq. km, it will eventually accommodate 9 million people with a reduced infrastructure footprint, creating new methods of efficiency.

鈥淚 remember, not long ago, people doubted The Line and then suddenly they saw the trucks going in, and The Line being built, this shut them up,鈥 he said.

Bin London鈥檚 view of Saudi perseverance did not just come from observing projects and financial deals, however. He firmly believes that success comes from the people behind it 鈥 starting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman: 鈥淚听think it was obvious to everyone who was following and paying attention what was going to happen in this country.鈥

The influencer, who is fluent in Arabic and has also mastered the Najdi Arabic dialect, creates content in the language to advocate for the opportunities offered in the land he has decided to make his home.

鈥淚 started picking up on vocabulary, pronunciation, from their dialects. It was, I guess, an unconscious thing,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t was just who you hear around you, how they speak. You start copying it and then later on a lot of my friends were from the Otaibi tribe, which 鈥 spreads from Taif, Hijaz and into Najd.鈥

The Briton lauds many Saudi tourist destinations but says Diriyah, the Kingdom鈥檚 birthplace and home of At-Turaif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will always have a special place in his heart.

鈥淒iriyah is one of my favorite places. It was somewhere that before my first visit to 黑料社区, which was in the end of 2022, I literally dreamt about visiting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the jewel of the Kingdom, it鈥檚 the place of the Al-Saud family, who created this country.

鈥淚 used to watch the videos and see the pictures and I want(ed) to visit the museums, like it was literally a dream, so much so that the first time I came I woke up super early 鈥 and I鈥檓 not a morning person 鈥 with excitement to go visit Diriyah,鈥 he said.

The excitement of that visit, he recalled, meant he spent an entire day wandering around and taking in the depth of history and captivating surroundings.

  • Wellness tourism is linked to sustainability and UN鈥檚 development goals

RIYADH: Rich natural and cultural assets mean 黑料社区 has strong potential to become a leading destination for wellness tourism in the Middle East, a UN Tourism official told Arab News on Tuesday.

Michel Julian, senior program officer for market intelligence at UN Tourism, said demand for travel centered on health and wellbeing has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was speaking at a wellness tourism workshop at the UN Tourism regional office for the Middle East in Riyadh which explored the sector鈥檚 growing potential as a driver of economic growth, tourism diversification and sustainability across the region.

鈥淲hat many consumers are looking for is that authenticity touch, that local touch, and to create a positive impact at the destination,鈥 he said. He added strong policies and strategies were needed to sustain growth in the sector.

The latest World Tourism Barometer showed global tourist arrivals reached 1.5 billion in 2024, a return to pre-pandemic levels.

The Middle East has led the recovery, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 41 percent in 2024 and showing continued momentum into 2025, with arrivals up 29 percent in the first half of the year as compared to 2019.

Export revenues from tourism rose to $2 trillion, 14 percent higher than 2019 in real terms, while the sector鈥檚 direct GDP contribution stood at $3.4 trillion in 2023.

Julian said 黑料社区鈥檚 investment in real estate and hospitality projects that integrated wellness was a 鈥渂ig positive step鈥 toward diversifying tourism and generating revenue.

Julian pointed to the urgency of tackling climate change and promoting environmental, social and governance standards in tourism. (Supplied)

Addressing the main challenges, he said: 鈥淎t the global level, tourism is facing geopolitical and economic challenges. At the destination level, you need the right infrastructure and the right policies to attract visitors.

鈥淢arketing, digitalization, and having appropriate market intelligence are critical to take informed decisions and to address the needs of different traveler segments, from Generation Z to luxury to seniors.鈥

Highlighting Goal 3, to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all, he added: 鈥淲ellness tourism is about improving quality of life for everyone and contributing to the SDGs. Local communities need to be at the center of every tourism policy. Every policy that is sustainable, inclusive and resilient must take into consideration the needs of local communities so they can also benefit.鈥

Julian also pointed to the urgency of tackling climate change and promoting environmental, social and governance standards in tourism.

鈥淭he tourism sector is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change but also contributes to it. That鈥檚 why we are working through the Glasgow Declaration and other initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, cut food waste, recycle plastics and secure sustainable consumption patterns,鈥 he said.

Samer Al-Kharashi, director of the UN Tourism regional office for the Middle East, echoed the importance of clear policies and regional cooperation. He told Arab News: 鈥淚n the region there is a lot of history and cultures and resources that support the region to be a leading in the wellness tourism. What we need is a very clear policy from the countries and the regional support and the political wellness.鈥

He added wellness could be combined with gastronomy and agritourism to create richer visitor experiences, and pointed to Saudi gigaprojects such as AlUla, the Red Sea, Neom and Asir as examples of growing commitment by the Kingdom.

Riyadh was also positioning itself as a wellness and health destination, he said, while private sector participation was expanding with hotels and resorts specifically developed around wellness.

鈥淚t is a very attractive and profitable sector,鈥 Al-Kharashi said, adding such initiatives supported both Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

鈥淲hen we aim for 150 million tourists by 2030, these kinds of products are very important for diversification. Each destination in 黑料社区 鈥 desert, sea, mountains 鈥 you would have a different wellness experience.鈥
