Kunnah season marks peak of Jazan鈥檚 fishing wealth

Kunnah season marks peak of Jazan鈥檚 fishing wealth
  • Abundance of the sought-after kingfish and other species
  • Govt supports with finance, boats, official tells Arab News

MAKKAH: Along the warm coastal waters of Jazan, the annual Kunnah fishing season has arrived, marking a period eagerly anticipated by local fishermen for its exceptional marine bounty.

This renowned season, which runs from mid-April to mid-June, is celebrated for the abundance of kingfish, known locally as Al-Dhirak or Tyrak.

In an interview with Arab News, Muhannad bin Abdulaziz Khawaji, director-general of the Fisheries Research Center in Jazan, provided insight into this economically vital season.

鈥淭he Kunnah season highlights the valuable marine resources that make Jazan鈥檚 coastline so distinctive,鈥 Khawaji explained.

鈥淲hile officially beginning in late April, we typically see catch volumes increase significantly from mid-April, continuing through mid-June.鈥

The season is characterized by gradually rising temperatures and initial wind conditions.

鈥淔ishing operations continue uninterrupted except when safety warnings are issued by the National Center for Environmental Compliance or Border Guards,鈥 Khawaji noted.

Market dynamics shift dramatically during this period, with lower prices for kingfish because of the increased supply.

鈥淎pril through July represents our most diverse and abundant fishing period of the entire year in Jazan,鈥 he said.

Khawaji said anticipation builds in Jazan鈥檚 fishing community as the Kunnah season approaches.

The waterfront becomes particularly vibrant as amateur anglers and tourists, permitted to use hook-and-line methods with catch limits, join professional fishermen on the waters.

鈥淭he Kunnah season is not a time of scarcity 鈥 it is when the sea offers its greatest gifts,鈥 said Mohammed Al-Qurbi, a fisherman from Jazan鈥檚 coastal waters.

Al-Qurbi said Kunnah season brings remarkable abundance. The waters teem with prized catches including green snappers, leopard coral groupers, and the coveted kingfish.

鈥淭hose who truly understand the rhythms of the sea recognize this as a time of providence, not pause,鈥 Al-Qurbi said, emphasizing the importance of experience to garner the greatest benefit from the season.

Khawaji said the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture responds to this seasonal surge by offering specialized permits, with an accompanying sailor license.

Preparations for the season begin well in advance, with authorities noting significant increases in applications for boat preparation, license renewals, and equipment upgrades.

The ministry facilitates these preparations through coordination with the Transport General Authority and Border Guards.

Khawaji pointed to conservation efforts, including a ban on fishing in spawning and other protected marine areas.

He said the ministry organizes periodic workshops to raise awareness and provides support including fully-equipped boats, loans, and direct financial support of up to SR50,000 ($13,330) annually for every active fisherman.

Ibrahim Qassim, another local fisherman, said: 鈥淜unnah marks the annual migration of kingfish through the Red Sea. They travel our waters searching for feeding grounds and eventually spawning areas.鈥

He noted that these magnificent fish can reach impressive sizes during this migration, with specimens weighing between 10 to 15 kg regularly appearing in catches.

Fishermen employ specialized techniques during this season, including the Al-Majroor method 鈥 a weighted line featuring artificial plastic lures called Al-Azm or Al-Labiah specifically designed to attract kingfish.

Others use strategic lighting systems to draw the fish toward their vessels during nighttime expeditions, Qassim explained.

The economic impact on local communities is significant.

鈥淢ost fishermen concentrate their annual efforts during Kunnah season due to the exceptional productivity,鈥 Khawaji explained.

鈥淭he abundance of catch, particularly kingfish, directly translates to increased income for fishing families.鈥

Khawaji said the Kunnah season coincides with spawning periods for some marine species including shrimp. There are also temporary bans on harvesting certain species such as Nagel and Taradi fish.

鈥淭hese measures are essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring sustainable fish stocks for future generations,鈥 Khawaji said.

RIYADH: Madinah has solidified its position as the Kingdom鈥檚 largest producer of organic aromatic plants, contributing 78 tonnes 鈥 26.4 percent of the national total of 296 tonnes.

This reflects the region鈥檚 strong agricultural productivity and its key role in medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

A recent report by the Madinah Chamber of Commerce detailed the national landscape, showing Qassim as the second-largest producer with 15.9 percent, followed by Riyadh with 14.9 percent and Jazan with 14.7 percent.

  • Kingdom to remain one of main backers to Syria in path for reconstruction and economic recovery, FM said
  • Several visits to follow in coming days by Saudi businessmen to Syria to discuss investments: Prince Faisal

DAMASCUS: 黑料社区鈥檚 Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said on Saturday that the Kingdom will offer with Qatar joint financial support to state employees in Syria.

His statements came during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Al-Shaibani in Damascus, who welcomed the foreign minister and his delegation on his arrival in the Syrian capital.

鈥淭he Kingdom will provide, with Qatar, joint financial support to state employees in Syria,鈥 Prince Faisal said.

Syria and Saudi Arabia had previously discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in the financial sectors.

Prince Faisal referred to his country鈥檚 role in helping to lift economic sanctions on Syria, saying that 黑料社区 would continue to be one of the main backers to Syria in its path for reconstruction and economic recovery.

He said he was being accompanied with a high-level economic delegation from the Kingdom to 鈥渉old talks (with the Syrian side) to bolster aspects of cooperation in various fields.鈥

Several visits would then follow in the coming days by Saudi businessmen to Syria to discuss investments in energy, agriculture, infrastructure and other sectors, he said.

The Kingdom and Qatar reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the stability and development of Syria, highlighting their shared historical and fraternal ties with the Syrian people, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The two countries stressed the importance of improving living conditions and promoting economic and social stability in Syria.

They also expressed a strong desire to work in coordination with the international community and development partners to ensure sustainable, effective support through a comprehensive and unified vision, SPA added.

Prince Faisal also met with interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on Saturday during his visit and 鈥渢he high-level economic delegation鈥 held talks with Syrian officials about ways of cooperating 鈥渢hat contribute to supporting Syria鈥檚 economy and strengthen institution building.鈥

On a visit to Riyadh earlier this month, US President Donald Trump said he would lift US sanctions on Syria, a move that paves the way for economic recovery in the war-torn country.

The European Union also recently lifted economic sanctions on Syria.

In February, Sharaa visited 黑料社区 in his first trip abroad as president.

Last month, 黑料社区 and Qatar, another key backer of the new authorities, announced they would settle Syria鈥檚 debt to the World Bank totaling roughly $15 million.

Damascus is hoping that the lifting of sanctions, particularly by the United States, will pave the way for support from the international community.

Years of war and sanctions have battered the country鈥檚 economy, infrastructure and industry.

A recent United Nations Development Programme report estimated Syria鈥檚 鈥渓ost GDP鈥 during the 2011-2024 war to be around $800 billion.

Prince Faisal first visited Syria鈥檚 new authorities in January.
