Al-Nassr crowned champions of Saudi Women’s Premier League with big win over Al-Taraji
  • A 6-0 win capped an outstanding season with 17 victories and only 1 loss in the league

RIYADH: Al-Nassr celebrated winning the 2024-25 Saudi Women’s Premier League title on Wednesday night after a thumping 6-0 win over Al-Taraji in their final match of the season in Riyadh.

Al-Nassr had secured the title several weeks ago and finished the season with a total of 51 points from 17 wins and only one loss.

Al-Nassr got off to a perfect start when Maria Eduardo (Duda) scored in the first minute, one of three goals she bagged in the game. Her second came one minute before the break, and she completed her hattrick after 64 minutes.

It was not the only treble of the night as Carla Luvanga repeated the feat for Al-Nassr, bringing her total for the season to 21 and making her the league’s top scorer.

The Tanzanian star opened her account after six minutes and followed up with strikes in the 17th and 36th minutes, as Al-Nassr ended the first half with a five-goal lead.

There were several other notable moments, with one yellow card issued for Al-Nassr and two for Al-Taraji, and eight and 15 fouls respectively.

Following the win, Al-Nassr’s goalkeeper Sarah Khalid told Arab News: “We prepared very well for this game, but we also wanted to enjoy every moment of it.

“It’s the last game of the season, we’re champions.”

Khalid added: “It was a good game for us ... we gave it our all, we wanted to score more obviously but at the same time, the coach decided to play as many players as possible and this is also amazing.”

The key to the championship was taking one game at a time. “Working hard towards a specific objective and lifting each other up through hardships and adversity is what makes this team very special.”

Speaking to Arab News, Al-Nassr’s head coach, Abdulaziz Al-Alwni, said: “What happened today was not easy … all the challenges we overcame were difficult, but we lucked out with this team.”

Al-Alwni added: “This year we achieved high stats and difficult numbers, and the group as a whole is the main reason why we reached as far as we did.”

“Off the field, away from the game, it’s a clean environment, an attractive environment, an environment of one heart and one family, that is the main reason why the team performs well on the field.”

The coach has already begun planning for next season.

“Next season is a hard one, we have Asia (AFC Women’s Asian Cup), West Asia (WAFF Women’s Championship), the league, the cup (Saudi Women’s Cup), and the Super Cup (Saudi Women’s Super Cup),” Al-Alwni said.

“There’s some pressure, the Saudi players are not used to these types of championships, but we have started working and next season will hopefully be a substantial one.”

Reem Al-Beloshi, a goalkeeper for Al-Nassr, spoke proudly of the result. “Today’s game was of course amazing,” she said. “We celebrated our third league win in a row … we feel great, we’re happy.”

Al-Beloshi said the attitude going into every game was to “push through” until the last minute.

When that determination is combined with respect for the game and respect for the opposing team, she added, that is when you will see your ambitions realized.

  • Goals from summer signings earn victory

Al-Hilal came from behind to defeat Qatar’s Al-Duhail 2-1 in their opening match of the AFC Champions League Elite group stage on Tuesday. Second-half strikes from summer signings Darwin Nunez and Theo Hernandez won the clash for the Riyadh club.

The match burst into life 10 minutes before the break as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic let fly from outside the area for Al-Duhail’s Salah Zakaria to tip around the post.

However, from the resultant corner, Senegalese defender Youssouf Sabaly won the ball before lifting a long ball over the home defence for Adil Boulbina to outpace the backline, run into the area past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and slide home to complete a devastating counterattack.

It spurred the hosts into action and they thought they were back on level terms on the stroke of half-time. The Qatari team failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Yusuf Akcicek just outside the area. The Turkish teenager fired a low shot into the bottom corner but the strike was ruled out by VAR after a Marcos Leonardo handball was spotted in the build-up.

After the break Al-Hilal continued to push forward but the ball would just not fall for the Blues in the area. However, just before the hour, a well-worked attack saw the four-times continental champions move the ball quickly in the final third. Milinkovic-Savic found Hamad Al-Yami on the right who pulled his pass back for fellow substitute Nunez to sidefoot home from just outside the six-yard box.

The n side were far from satisfied and went in search of a second, albeit by leaving gaps at the back.

But the ploy paid off when Hernandez’s shot from outside the area took a deflection to give Zakaria no chance and the home team the start they wanted in the competition.

  • The 2-0 win has Jorge Jesus’ team maintain perfect start to the season with 6 points from 2 wins

RIYADH: Al-Nassr defeated Al-Kholood 2-0 at Al-Awwal Park on Sunday night to maintain their 100 percent record at the start of the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League season.

Jorge Jesus’ team now have two wins from two matches and join Al-Ittihad and Al-Khaleej on six points, but with a better goal difference.

After a goalless first half, Senegal star Sadie Mane opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, latching onto Kingsley Coman’s smart flick to finish with his right foot past Juan Pablo Cozzani in Al-Kholood’s goal.

The home fans could finally relax in the 82nd minute when Inigo Martinez brilliantly headed Marcelo Brozovic’s corner to Cozzani’s right.

The closing minutes of the match could have been far more nervy for those supporters had Al-Kholood’s Myziane Maolida not missed from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.

It proved to be the last meaningful action of the match as Al-Nassr secured their first home league win of the season.

Earlier on Sunday, Al-Riyadh beat new boys Al-Najma 2-1 while another newly promoted team, Neom, registered their first points of the season with a 2-1 win at Damac.

  • Both teams drop first points of the season in 2-2 draw to trail leaders Al-Ittihad by two points in Saudi Pro League

RIYADH: Al-Hilal had to come back twice to save a point at home with a 2-2 draw against Al-Qadsiah on Saturday night at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

The draw meant both teams dropped their first points of the season to trail leaders Al-Ittihad by two points after two rounds of Saudi Pro League action.

Al-Qadisah shocked the home team by taking a sixth minute lead through Ghanian forward Bonsu Baah’s low finish to the right of Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The visitors managed to hold on to the lead until half-time, but after only four minutes of the second half Al-Hilal were back on level terms. A flowing move ended with a Malcolm cross from the right that allowed Darwin Nunez to tap home the equalizer. It was the Uruguay and former Liverpool forward’s first goal for the club.

The reprieve was short-lived, however, as Mexican forward Julian Quinones restored Al-Qadsiah’s lead just a minute later with a finish that echoed Baah’s opener. On the touchline, Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi looked frustrated with his team’s loose defending.

Al-Hilal set up a grandstand finish when Reuben Neves equalized from the penalty spot after 71 minutes but the expected home winner never came despite four substitutions in the closing minutes.

Earlier on Saturday, Al-Khaleej defeated Al-Fayha 3-0 at home, while Musa Barrow’s 65th minute winner secured three points for Al-Taawoun after a 3-2 win at Al-Okhdood.

  • Friday’s other matches saw Asian champions Al-Ahli draw 0-0 with Al-Ettifaq, while Al-Shabab beat 10-man Al-Hazem 1-0

RIYADH: Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad maintained their perfect start to the 2025-26 season with a 4-2 win over Al-Fateh on Friday.

The win puts Al-Ittihad at the top of the early season table with the maximum six points from two matches, with several other teams — including Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr — on three points and yet to play during week two.

The match, held at King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

Al-Ittihad took the lead after 22 minutes through Algerian star Houssem Aouar but were pegged back 11 minutes later by Argentine Matias Vargas. Strikes by Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn in the 35th and 39th minutes, and the dismissal of Al-Fateh’s Moroccan striker Mourad Batna in stoppage time, ensured the reigning champions went into half-time with a comfortable two-goal cushion.

However, what was expected to be a straightforward second half was disrupted when Al-Ittihad’s goalkeeper, Serbian Predrag Rajkovic, was sent off just before the hour mark. The home fans’ nerves were not helped when Algerian forward Sofiane Bendebka reduced Al-Fateh’s deficit with a penalty on 69 minutes.

It remained a tense match until Saudi defender Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti settled matters in the first minute of stoppage time, scoring Al-Ittihad’s fourth.

Earlier on Friday, Asian champions Al-Ahli played out a 0-0 draw at Al-Ettifaq, while Al-Shabab beat 10-man Al-Hazem 1-0 in Riyadh thanks to Belgian international Yannick Carrasco’s 64th-minute strike.
