Dodgers star Ohtani hits two homers, ties record with 4 extra-base hits in World Series Game 3
  • After his four-hit barrage in the first seven innings, Ohtani drew five consecutive walks in this epic extra-inning World Series game
  • Makes him the first major leaguer in 83 years to reach base nine times in any game, let alone the postseason

LOS ANGELES: Shohei Ohtani homered twice and tied a 119-year-old major league record with four extra-base hits in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night, putting on yet another historic postseason show at Dodger Stadium.
After his four-hit barrage in the first seven innings, Ohtani drew five consecutive walks in this epic extra-inning World Series game, making him the first major leaguer in 83 years to reach base nine times in any game, let alone the postseason.
Ohtani led off the bottom of the first with a ground-rule double to right field. He followed with a solo homer to right in the third inning off Toronto starter Max Scherzer and added an RBI double in the fifth off reliever Mason Fluharty during a tying rally for Los Angeles.
Ohtani then hit a tying solo homer off Seranthony Dominguez with one out in the seventh. It was his sixth homer in the Dodgers鈥 last four games, and he tied Corey Seager鈥檚 eight homers in 2020 for the most by a Dodgers player in a single postseason.
The Blue Jays had seen enough of Ohtani by then: Manager John Schneider intentionally walked him in the ninth, 11th, 13th and 15th innings 鈥 and the gambit worked each time, with Ohtani鈥檚 teammates unable to get him home.
Ohtani is the first player to be intentionally walked four times in a postseason game, just one shy of the overall major league record for intentional passes set by Andre Dawson in May 1990.
With a man on first, the Blue Jays pitched to Ohtani in the 17th 鈥 but just barely, with Brendon Little throwing four pitches comfortably outside the zone.
Ohtani became the first player to reach base nine times since Stan Hack had five hits and four walks for the Cubs in an 18-inning game on Aug. 9, 1942, tying a record also achieved by Max Carey in 1922 and Johnny Burnett in 1932.
After becoming the first player in MLB history with three multihomer games in one postseason, Ohtani is two shy of Randy Arozarena鈥檚 record for homers in a postseason.
Only one other player in baseball history got four extra-base hits in a World Series game: Frank Isbell had four doubles for the Chicago White Sox in Game 5 in 1906 against the Chicago Cubs.
Ohtani also became the first hitter to have multiple games with at least 12 total bases in a single postseason. The only other player to have two such postseason games in his career was Babe Ruth.
Once again, Ohtani put on a spectacular show for the Los Angeles fans who definitely 鈥渘eed鈥 him, posting his first four-hit game of the postseason in his first game back at Dodger Stadium since he hit three homers and struck out 10 Milwaukee Brewers in his sensational two-way effort during a clinching victory in the National League Championship Series 10 days ago.
Ohtani has six hits and five RBIs in the first three games of the World Series against Toronto, the city where fans chanted 鈥淲e don鈥檛 need you!鈥 at Ohtani while the Blue Jays won Game 1. Ohtani also homered late in that blowout loss.
Ohtani will make his first World Series start on the mound when he pitches for the Dodgers in Game 4 on Tuesday night.
Ohtani hit two homers in the Dodgers鈥 first game of the postseason against Cincinnati, but he hadn鈥檛 homered again until his historic performance in the NLCS. All three of those homers were solo shots, and he hit a pair of solo homers in Game 3.
He first connected for a 389-foot drive inside the right-field pole in the third inning.
After struggling Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen allowed the Blue Jays to go back ahead 5-4 in the seventh, Ohtani tied it with a 401-foot homer to left-center.
Ohtani now trails only Arozarena, who set the major league record with 10 postseason homers in 2020 before Tampa Bay lost the World Series to Seager and the Dodgers.
Ohtani doubled on Scherzer鈥檚 second pitch of Game 3, although his teammates couldn鈥檛 bring him home.
Ohtani keyed a tying rally when he doubled to left-center in the fifth, muscling an inside sweeper from Fluharty into the gap for his first opposite-field hit since Sept. 20, a span of 77 at-bats.
Following that double, Ohtani scored the tying run on Freddie Freeman鈥檚 single.
The Blue Jays pulled Scherzer right before Ohtani came up and replaced the veteran right-hander with Fluharty, who memorably struck out Ohtani with the bases loaded while escaping a big jam to secure a 5-4 win for Toronto at Dodger Stadium in August.
Ohtani quickly attempted to steal second after being walked in the ninth, but he was tagged out when he popped up and came off the base for an instant.
Ohtani advanced to second on Mookie Betts鈥 two-out single in the 11th, although he pulled up gingerly at the bag due to cramping. He stayed in the game, however, and Freeman flied out to end the inning.
With Tommy Edman on third base in the 13th, the Jays intentionally walked both Ohtani and Betts to load the bases with two outs. Freeman, who ended Game 1 of last year鈥檚 World Series with a grand slam, hit a 379-foot flyout to the warning track in center.
Ohtani鈥檚 17th-inning walk put two Dodgers on base with two outs, but Betts popped out to go 1 for 8.

Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager

LONDON: Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, the club announced, after the Scottish giants鈥 lacklustre start to the season.
The club said former boss Martin O鈥橬eill and former player Shaun Maloney would take charge of the team until a permanent successor is appointed.
Rodgers鈥 second spell at Celtic ended after Sunday鈥檚 3-1 Scottish Premiership defeat at Hearts left them eight points adrift of the Edinburgh side.
鈥淔ootball manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation鈥 and 鈥渨ill leave his role with immediate effect,鈥 Celtic said in a statement.
鈥淏rendan leaves with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.鈥
The club added that the search for a replacement was already underway.
鈥淲e are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O鈥橬eill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters,鈥 it said.
Rodgers, 52, returned for a second spell at Celtic Park in 2023, winning successive titles, to add to his league triumphs from 2017 and 2018.
He previously managed Swansea, Liverpool and Leicester and arrived at Celtic for the second time in June 2023 to succeed Ange Postecoglou.
The Northern Irishman had been at Celtic between May 2016 and February 2019, completing successive league and cup trebles.
His first season in charge saw Celtic finish with a record 106 points and become the first Scottish side to complete a top-flight season undefeated since 1899.
Rodgers continued Celtic鈥檚 domestic supremacy by winning league titles in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and also lifted the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.
But clouds were gathering over the club this season with Celtic knocked out of the Champions League by Kazakhstan minnows Kairat Almaty.

Rodgers had appeared at odds with his employers over their summer transfer window policy.
After Celtic鈥檚 first defeat at Dundee in 37 years this month, he said the team had 鈥渓ost a lot of firepower, a lot of goals.鈥
鈥淎nd there鈥檚 no way you鈥檒l go into a race and be given the keys to a Honda Civic and say, 鈥業 want you to drive it like a Ferrari鈥. It鈥檚 not going to happen.鈥
Celtic鈥檚 main shareholder Dermot Desmond hit back, saying Rodgers鈥 criticism had come 鈥渆ntirely out of the blue.鈥
鈥淎t no point prior to those remarks had he raised any such concerns with me, Michael , or any member of the board or executive team,鈥 Desmond said.
鈥淚n reality, he was given final say over all football matters and was consistently backed in the recruitment process 鈥 including record investment in players he personally identified and approved.鈥

Atletico win at Betis to bounce back from Arsenal drubbing

Atletico win at Betis to bounce back from Arsenal drubbing
  • Manuel Pellegrini鈥檚 Real Betis, sixth, are now three points behind Atletico

SEVILLE, Spain: Atletico Madrid earned a solid 2-0 win at Real Betis on Monday to move fourth in La Liga and bounce back from their Champions League thrashing by Arsenal.
Diego Simeone鈥檚 side lost 4-0 last week in north London but put that defeat behind them with a strong display at La Cartuja stadium, where Betis are playing on a temporary basis.
They were able to record only their second clean sheet in their last nine games across all competitions and their first away win of the season.
The coach鈥檚 son Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring with Alex Baena netting the second before half-time.
鈥淭his is an important win, hard-fought, and I鈥檓 happy,鈥 Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Movistar.
鈥淚 hope we continue like this, away from home, not just at home... it was a great game from the whole team and a big effort.鈥
Giuliano Simeone fired the visitors ahead in the opening stages with a neat volley from the edge of the box.
Star summer signing Baena curled home his first goal for the club before half-time to double the Rojiblancos鈥 lead.
Real Betis were the better team in the second half and hit the crossbar from Abde Ezzalzouli鈥檚 free-kick, but Atletico鈥檚 defense held firm.
Atletico trail La Liga leaders Real Madrid by eight points, although they are the only team to inflict defeat on their city rivals.
鈥淥ur first win on the road and we鈥檙e very happy for the great work the team did,鈥 said Giuliano Simone, who dedicated the goal to his recently-born nephew Faustino in his celebration, making the letter F with his fingers.
Faustino鈥檚 birth made Atletico coach Diego Simeone a grandfather.
鈥淣othing changes for me,鈥 said the Rojiblancos boss, smiling, while also congratulating his son on his good performance.
Manuel Pellegrini鈥檚 Real Betis, sixth, are now three points behind Atletico.
鈥淭oday we were lacking in the final third, we had to be a little sharper in front of goal,鈥 Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso told Movistar.
鈥淭he team worked hard and tried until the end, for the fans who filled the stadium on a rainy Monday and didn鈥檛 stop backing us. We have to turn the page and continue.鈥

Aquabike World Championship final set to roll on Doha Bay in Qatar

Aquabike World Championship final set to roll on Doha Bay in Qatar
  • Qualifying for the Qatar International Cup and a session for non-qualified Runabout GP2 riders opens Saturday morning鈥檚 action

DOHA: Qatar returns to the 2025 sporting calendar to host the final round of the UIM-ABP Aquabike World Championship this weekend.

Aquabike Promotion and the Doha Marine Sports Club (DMSC) will host the three-day event at Old Doha Port Grand Prix of Qatar on Doha Bay. The event will act as the final round of the World Championship and the stand-alone Runabout GP2 Asian Continental Championship.

The provisional entry features 90 riders from 19 nations, with 28 competing in Runabout GP1, 23 in Ski Division GP1, 13 in Ski Ladies GP1 and a staggering 12 in Freestyle. In addition, 14 will compete in the Asian Continental section of the weekend.

Fran莽ois Medori heads to Doha with a maximum 100 points for winning four successive Runabout GP1 Motos. The Corsican will be aiming to defend a 16-point advantage over Jeremy Perez, with current World Champion Samuel Johansson somehow retaining third in the rankings, despite picking up just three points from the second of the recent heats in Sardinia.

All the major protagonists are among the 28-rider field and they include Pierre-Fran莽ois Savelli, Robin Laforge, Gy枚rgy Kasza, Andrzej Wisniewski, Martin Doulik and Linus Lindberg. The host nation will be represented by Khalid Al-Mohannadi and Waleed Al-Sharshani and the Emirati trio of Khalid Al-Maazmi, Khalifa Belsalah and Mohammed Mohsin boost the regional entry.

The Qatar event also sees the dramatic return of five-time world champion Yousef Al-Abdulrazzaq and fellow Kuwaiti riders, Rashed Al-Dawas and Ahmad Al-Khadhari.

Dane Oliver Koch Hansen arrives in Doha with an 11-point lead over J茅remy Poret in the battle for the Ski Division GP1 world title. The leading racers on the planet battled it out in three gripping Motos in Sardinia two weeks ago with a pair of victories for Belgian Quinten Bossche sandwiching a lone win for Mickael Poret.

Reliability issues have plagued defending champion Bossche this season, however, and three Moto wins have been coupled with three non-finishes. That was left the Ostende racer languishing in sixth in the standings behind Koch Hansen, J茅remy Poret, Japan鈥檚 Toshi O鈥橦ara, Mickael Poret and young Belgian Yoni Hamelin.

All of the title contenders will be present in Doha where they line up against the likes of former champion Kevin Reiterer, Anthony Beernaut, Morgan Poret, Benjamin Scharff and Axel Courtois. Nizar Abuljadayel represents the Kingdom of 黑料社区 and is the only GCC entrant in the field.

The fight for honors in Ski Ladies GP1 promises to be a classic and 13 riders are making the trip to Qatar for the three-Moto finale. Estelle Poret has a seven-point cushion over Benedicte Drange with defending champion Jasmiin Ypraus a further point adrift in third. Naomi Benini and Virginie Morlaes are tied for fourth, albeit 35 points behind the leading French girl.

Drange has taken four wins from six Motos but suffering a costly retirement from the third Moto in Indonesia. Poret has never been off the podium and won one heat, while Ypraus had a win and four podium finishes before engine issues plagued her before the last of the Motos in Sardinia.

The Estonian鈥檚 No. 1 ski failed to start and she was forced to turn to her back-up machine which misfired its way around the course to pick up just 10 points. Could that have been the moment when Ypraus lost the world title?

Jessica Chavanne suffered a miserable weekend in Sardinia and the new European champion will be hoping for better fortune on Doha Bay, where she lines up alongside the likes of Sofie and Jonna Borgstr枚m, H茅lo茂se Delcluze, River Varner, Joana Gra莽a, Janina Johansson and French newcomer Emy Garcia.

The Freestyle category has attracted  12 entrants, although the defending European champion and current World Championship leader Roberto Mariani tops the field from defending champion and title rival Rashid Al-Mulla from Abu Dhabi. The pair are separated by 10 points heading into the final two Motos of the season with Massimo Accumolo three points further behind in the bronze medal position. Portugal鈥檚 Paulo Nu帽es is fourth.

There are six Qatari entrants in the provisional field: Abdulaziz Al-Abdullah, Nayef Al-Nama, Salem Al-Kubaisi, Issa Al-Assi, Abdulrahman Al-Sulaiti and Bader Al-Abdullah will be hoping for success in front of home crowds. They will be joined by Kuwait鈥檚 Aziz Al-Armeli and 黑料社区鈥檚 Nizar Abuljadayel.

Four of the Runabout GP2 Asian Continental Championship entrants will represent Qatar, with five from the UAE, four from 黑料社区 and one from Kuwait. Mahmoud Abumaali, Khalaf Al-Kuwari, Waleed Al-Ibrahim and Waleed Al-Sharshani will fly the Qatari flag with Abdullah Al-Fadhel lining up for Kuwait.

Registration and scrutineering formalities take place on Wednesday. A hectic Thursday timetable sees the free practice sessions for the Runabout GP2 Asian Continental Championship fire into life from 09.30hrs and precede nearly two hours of practice for the Ski Ladies GP1, Ski Division GP1, Runabout GP1 and Freestyle competitors. The afternoon is dominated by the various qualifying and pole position sessions.

The first Runabout GP2 Asian Continental Championship Moto kickstarts Friday鈥檚 action from 10 a.m. and is followed by opening Motos for Ski Ladies GP1 and Ski Division GP1. The second of the Motos follow in the afternoon before the Runabout GP1 and Freestyle contenders take part in their first heats.

The evening鈥檚 action will be rounded off by a Parallel Slalom competition and a Freestyle night show to entertain spectators in the Old Port area on Doha Corniche.

Qualifying for the Qatar International Cup and a session for non-qualified Runabout GP2 riders opens Saturday morning鈥檚 action. Further free practice follows before a Moto for the Qatar International Cup to round off the morning.

The third Runabout GP2 Asian Continental Championship Moto is first on the agenda in the afternoon and precedes the final Ski Ladies GP1 and Ski GP1 Motos that will decide the outcome of the World Championship.

Runabout GP1 and Freestyle contenders then take to the water for their second Motos that will draw a curtain on the season鈥檚 UIM-ABP Aquabike Circuit Pro World Championship.

Ohtani has one place he doesn鈥檛 want to hear the 鈥榃e don鈥檛 need you!鈥 chant 鈥 at home

LOS ANGELES: Shohei Ohtani said there鈥檚 one place he doesn鈥檛 want to hear the 鈥淲e don鈥檛 need you!鈥 chant 鈥 at home from his family.

A day before the World Series resumes with Game 3 at Dodger Stadium, the two-way Los Angeles superstar smiled and laughed about the derisive chant directed at him late in Toronto鈥檚 opening win Friday. Blue Jays fans remain stung he signed with the Dodgers in December 2023 rather than their team.

鈥淚t was a really great chant, and my wife really appreciated it,鈥 he said Sunday through a translator following the Dodgers鈥 workout.

Ohtani is hitting .224 in 12 postseason games with six homers, 11 RBIs and one stolen base and is 2 for 8 with a two-run homer and a single in the Series. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his pair of mound starts, striking out 19 and walking four in 12 innings.

鈥淚 do feel better at the plate recently,鈥 the 31-year-old three-time MVP said. 鈥淚 do everything in my power to make sure that I鈥檓 prepared as much as possible and being at the plate with the right mentality, but got to give some credit to the other side as well.鈥

Los Angeles and Toronto are tied at a game apiece in the best-of-seven matchup.

Ohtani will oppose Shane Bieber in Game 4 on Tuesday night with a chance to become the first pitcher to hit a World Series homer in 17 years. He wouldn鈥檛 mind if his unprecedented performances will lead to more two-way players.

鈥淚 like to encourage kids who are trying the two-way to do it as long as possible, as long as they鈥檙e allowed to, as much as their talent level could take them,鈥 he said.

Growing up in Japan, he looked up to Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki, Japanese stars who had great success in Major League Baseball.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not like I could watch a lot of the games on TV, and so it was really those two players,鈥
Ohtani said.

Babe Ruth, the player Ohtani has been compared to, was never a fulltime pitcher and field player at the same time, cutting down his mound appearances in 1918 and 鈥19 as he became more of an everyday outfielder and occasional first baseman.

Ruth pitched only five times from 1920 through the end of his career in 1935.

Ruth was 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in three World Series starts for Boston, pitching 29 2/3 scoreless innings at one stretch and helping win titles in 1916 and 鈥18. He was 1 for 10 at the plate in those starts, hitting a tiebreaking two-run triple in Game 4 in 1918 as he allowed two runs over eight innings.

Ohtani entered the Series following a standout performance in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series against Milwaukee, when he homered three times, pitched six shutout innings and struck out 10. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred called it 鈥減robably the greatest game of all time.鈥

鈥淗e鈥檚 kind of like a super human,鈥 fellow Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow said ahead of his Game 3 outing.

Ohtani is 2 for 16 with a double, one RBI and six strikeouts against Bieber, a former Cy Young Award winner.
