5 things we learned from Saudi鈥檚 World Cup qualifiers
  • Four points from a win over China and a draw with Japan is probably what Herve Renard had set as an acceptable return from this international week

LONDON: 黑料社区 drew 0-0 in Japan on Tuesday to follow the 1-0 win over China last Thursday. The results leave the Green Falcons on 10 points in Group C in the third round of 2026 World Cup qualification, three points behind Australia in second. Japan are already sure of first.

Only the top two from each of the three groups of six are guaranteed a place in North America next summer, while those that finish third and fourth advance to another stage of qualification.

It goes without saying that 黑料社区 want to take the direct route. Here are five things we learned from this World Cup qualification window.

The Japan result was a good one

Four points from the two games is a good showing. The China game should have ended with a more emphatic scoreline and ideally would have been followed by victory in Japan.

Coach Herve Renard said after the 0-0 draw that he would have taken the point if he had been offered it 24 hours earlier, and understandably so. Japan are the best team in Asia by some distance, even if they had already qualified.

If 黑料社区 do miss out on the automatic places for the World Cup it will not be because of the stalemate in Japan but because of earlier home draws with Indonesia and Bahrain. If six points had been taken in those two games under Roberto Mancini, then the result in Saitama Stadium would have been hailed as an excellent one. The same could be said if Australia had not picked up six points in the last five days.

Attacking threat sacrificed for defensive solidity

Renard did not need to say that he would have taken a point: His game plan and tactics made it obvious that this was what he wanted.

There was talk about keeping it tight for the opening exchanges and then perhaps getting down the wings to cause problems for the East Asians.

The first part of that equation happened, but the second? Not really. There was little in terms of attacking threat from the visitors. There were long balls out of defence but Firas Al-Buraikan was often left isolated on the rare occasions that the ball went into dangerous areas.

Yet the concentration, the tactical discipline and hard work were impressive. 黑料社区 frustrated a better team away from home and while there was luck at times, they are only the second team to take points from Japan in 14 World Cup qualifiers.

Jehad Thakri impresses

With injuries at the back, a problem not helped by Hassan Kadesh getting carried off against China, there were some understandable worries against the team with the most firepower in Asia. There may have been a few nerves when Renard handed a debut to Jehad Thakri but the Al-Qadsiah center-back did not display any signs of them as he took the field at Saitama Stadium on the right side of a three-man defense.

The 23-year-old has made a name for himself this season in the Saudi Pro League and looks like he belongs on the international stage too as he was confident, strong and hard to beat. His distribution was not quite as impressive but there is time for that to develop, especially as there will not be many games when 黑料社区 are under so much pressure. With Nawaf Boushal also impressing, there are some new names coming through.

Fatigue and injuries play a part

Following the Japan game there has been plenty of reaction on social media about how extending the number of foreign players allowed in Saudi Pro League squads to 10 has negatively affected the national team.聽

That is perhaps a debate for another day, but it should not be forgotten that the Green Falcons have had to deal with numerous injuries. Just before the China game, midfielder Mohamed Kanno was ruled out, then Kadesh was also unavailable and, perhaps most damaging of all, Roma star Saud Abdulhamid picked up an injury. There are also longer-term knocks such as Yasser Al-Shahrani and others.聽

And then there is the travel factor. There was a hard-fought game at home and then a long, long trip east, across six time zones, to face the best team in Asia. This should not be underestimated (and will work against Australia in the final window).

Renard has gambled on Japan

There are two games remaining, with the final clash between 黑料社区 and Australia on June 10 鈥 and this cannot be a dead rubber. The problem is that the Socceroos are three points clear with a much superior goal difference.聽

Whatever happens, Renard and his men have to win in Bahrain in the penultimate match. Then the hope is that Japan get something in Perth on the same day. Even though they have already qualified, the Samurai Blue are certainly capable of winning Down Under. There is a rivalry between the two teams and Japan would enjoy denting Australia鈥檚 World Cup hopes.

It would mean then that it all comes down to the last game. If 黑料社区 go into the Australia match knowing that a win means second place and the World Cup, then Renard will be happy.

LIV Golf unveils revamped format for 2025 Team Championship in Michigan
  • 2025 edition, taking place Aug. 22鈥24 at The Cardinal at Saint John鈥檚 Resort in Plymouth, will see all 48 players from 12 remaining teams compete across three full days of play

LONDON: LIV Golf has announced sweeping changes to the format of its season-ending Team Championship, in what organizers hope will provide a more action-packed spectacle when the event returns to Michigan later this month.

The 2025 edition, taking place Aug. 22鈥24 at The Cardinal at Saint John鈥檚 Resort in Plymouth, will see all 48 players from the 12 remaining teams compete across three full days of play.

The overhaul removes previous first-round byes and introduces a high-stakes play-in match on Wednesday, ensuring fans get more chances to watch the league鈥檚 biggest stars in action throughout the entire week.

In a significant shift, the two lowest-ranked teams entering the week, seeded 12th and 13th based on regular-season standings, will face off in a single-elimination play-in on Aug. 20.

The winner progresses to the main draw, while the losing team is eliminated.

Friday鈥檚 quarterfinals will feature all 12 qualified teams in match play, with pairings selected by the highest-ranked team captains.

The format, consisting of two singles matches and one alternate-shot (foursomes) match, will be repeated in Saturday鈥檚 semifinals, where teams are divided into a Championship Bracket and a Rankings Bracket based on quarterfinal results.

Each match carries a total of three points, with the first team to earn two progressing.

The Championship culminates on Sunday with a shift to stroke play.

All 48 players will compete, with each team鈥檚 total score made up of all four individual player scores, a format that places equal importance on every shot from every player.

Positions will be finalized across four tiers. The three finalists in the Championship Bracket will compete for the overall title, with other teams ranked based on their respective finishes in the Championship or Rankings brackets.

One of the key tactical tweaks this year gives the higher-seeded team captain in each match the advantage of seeing the opponent鈥檚 lineup before finalizing his own, a move that could prove decisive in closely fought contests.

鈥淚 think you鈥檒l see a few teams get knocked out that you maybe wouldn鈥檛 expect,鈥 said Cameron Smith, captain of reigning champions Ripper GC. Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau added: 鈥淢ore pressure. Each day matters more.鈥

Ross Hallett, LIV Golf鈥檚 executive vice president and head of events, said the updated format was designed with fans in mind.

鈥淭he new format reflects the league鈥檚 goal to consistently enhance both our competition and fan experiences while producing an exciting and memorable event,鈥 he said.

鈥淭hese updates mean fans will get more golf from our top teams and put added pressure on players to perform from start to finish as we look to crown our global team champion.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking forward to putting on a fantastic championship event filled with high-stakes competition, world-class concerts and family-friendly activities to be enjoyed by fans of all ages,鈥 he added.

FRANKFURT: Eintracht Frankfurt have signed Japanese winger Ritsu Doan to strengthen a squad depleted by the sale of Hugo Ekitik茅 as they prepare to return to the Champions League.

Doan joins on a five-year contract from fellow German club Freiburg, where he was top scorer with 10 goals as the team placed fifth in the Bundesliga.

鈥淚鈥檓 very happy and honored to be here,鈥 Doan said in a translated video message to Frankfurt fans. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 wait to play in front of the supporters.鈥

Frankfurt are heading back to the Champions League this season after a third-place Bundesliga finish but will have a new-look attack after striker Ekitik茅 was sold to Liverpool for a fee of 69 million pounds ($93.5 million).

The 27-year-old Doan will be expected to team up with another new signing for Ekitik茅鈥檚 center-forward role, ex-Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt.

Doan won the Dutch Cup with PSV Eindhoven in 2022 and has played 57 games for the Japanese national team. That includes all of its games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and a role in securing qualification for next year鈥檚 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Doan could make his Frankfurt debut Aug. 17 in a German Cup game against fifth-tier Engers. Frankfurt鈥檚 first Bundesliga game of the season is six days later at home to Werder Bremen.
