  • Saudis went into the game in Saitama in third place in Asian qualifying third round Group C, one point behind Australia

SAITAMA, Japan:聽黑料社区 failed to聽make any significant gains in World Cup qualifying after a聽tame 0-0 draw against聽Japan聽in front of 58,000 fans聽at Saitama Stadium on Tuesday.

Japan controlled the game from the start聽with patient possession football聽and the Saudi team struggled to聽create chances on a cool night in聽Saitama just north of Tokyo.

黑料社区 came under early pressure from the Japanese with left winger NAKAMURA Keita giving Saudi full back Muhannad Al Shanqiti a torrid time on 黑料社区鈥檚 left flank.

The Japanese team played controlled football with short passes and always had a player available. In contrast, the Saudis lacked ideas and when they did manage a break, there was little or no support, making Japan鈥檚 job of defending easy.

Japan鈥檚 best chance in the half came in the ninth minute when MAEDA Daizen latched on to a through ball and directed a shot against the right post.

Japan goalkeeper SUZUKI Zion had nothing to do except a single headed clearance outside the box.

Hassan Al Tambakti resorted to launching long balls from the back, but they made little impact on the Japanese defense.

KAMADA Daichi and Nakamura continued to cause problems down 黑料社区鈥檚 right side, setting up a couple of half-chances for Maeda who failed to capitalize.

黑料社区鈥檚 best chance came in the 22nd聽minute when Nawaf Bu Washl crossed to the far post, but Al Shanqiti鈥檚 header flew over the bar.

KUBO Take fuss managed a couple of breaks down the right wing, but the final ball failed to trouble the Saudi defense.

It was no surprise when聽黑料社区 replaced Al Shanqiti聽with聽Ali Hassan Majrashi聽at halftime聽and he managed to leave his mark on Nakamura in the first minute of the half聽as well as making some tough tackles聽on the Japanese winger.

In the聽56th聽minute, TANAKA Ao聽nearly聽caught聽out聽the Saudi defense with聽a聽ball over top,聽but聽it was just beyond the reach of Maeda, who came close again two minutes later.

Saudi manager Herve Renard brought on聽Ziyad Aljohani and Turki Alammar聽in the 60th聽minute while Japan replaced Kubo and SUGAWARA Yukinari with ITO Junya and聽DOAN Ritsu.

A great break by Salem Al Dawsari in the 66th聽minute came聽to nothing as he was crowded out聽and the Saudis continued to struggle to聽create any clearcut chances.

Kamada played in ITO the 82nd minute and聽Nawaf Al Aqidi did well to tip the shot over the bar.聽Three minutes later,聽substitute聽MINAMINO聽Takumi headed just wide from a HATATE Reo cross.

But there was little apparent urgency from both teams and even Japan with all their possession failed to create many clearcut chances.

MOSCOW: A French cyclist detained after trying to enter Russia鈥檚 Far East will be held in jail until at least next month, Russian state media reported Wednesday, citing a local court.
French media reported that Sofiane Sehili was arrested after crossing the Russian border with China illegally while attempting to break the record for the fastest endurance cycle from Lisbon to Vladivostok.
The RIA Novosti news agency reported that a court in Russia鈥檚 Primorye region had ordered him held in pre-trial detention until October 4.
Citing the court鈥檚 press service, it did not say what Sehili had been charged with.
It said the hearing took place at the start of September, but was reported by Russian officials only on Wednesday.
A member of a government-linked prison monitoring body who visited Sehili in jail told AFP the cyclist had a Russian e-visa but had 鈥渢ried to cross the border on foot at a checkpoint only accessible for Russian and Chinese citizens.鈥
鈥淭hen he went to another crossing, where it is forbidden to cross on bike, you need to go on train or bus,鈥 Vladimir Naidin from the Primorye region鈥檚 public monitoring commission told AFP via telephone.
He said Sehili was in good health but was struggling to communicate with officials in the prison facility given the language barrier.
He was being held in a cell with another inmate.
鈥淲e are monitoring everything closely and are treating him the same way we would any Russian citizen,鈥 Sehili said.

Manchester United posts sixth year of net loss, forecasts revenue dip
  • The Premier League side posted a 拢33 million ($45 million) loss for the year ended June 30

Manchester United reported an annual net loss for the sixth consecutive year on Wednesday and forecast lower revenue for the fiscal year, highlighting the club鈥檚 ongoing financial struggles.
The Premier League side posted a 拢33 million ($45 million) loss for the year ended June 30, an improvement on the previous year鈥檚 拢113.2 million deficit.
The narrower full-year loss reflects significant cost-cutting measures aimed at shoring up finances after several years of underperformance both on and off the field.
The club said it expects revenue of between 拢640 million and 拢660 million for its fiscal 2026, compared with 拢666.5 million reported for the year ended June 30.
The Premier League has in recent years tightened club spending regulations under its Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), designed to level the playing field and curb excessive spending by wealthy owners.
Manchester United has racked up losses of about 拢175 million since fiscal 2023.
The PSR caps losses at 拢105 million over a three-year period, though investments in infrastructure, academies, charity and women鈥檚 soccer are permitted as deductions.
鈥淭he club remains committed to, and in compliance with, both the Premier League鈥檚 Profit and Sustainability Rules and UEFA鈥檚 Financial Fair Play Regulations,鈥 it said in a statement.

HONG KONG: LIV Golf will return to Hong Kong in 2026, with HSBC announced as the event鈥檚 title sponsor.

The newly named HSBC LIV Golf Hong Kong will take place from March 6-8 next year at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling and will continue in 2027 as part of a multi-year agreement.

This is the first title-sponsored tournament in LIV Golf鈥檚 history, following HSBC鈥檚 earlier designation as the league鈥檚 first global banking partner. The partnership is positioned to enhance its stature and expand its impact across Asia.

鈥淗ong Kong welcomed LIV Golf with extraordinary enthusiasm,鈥 said LIV Golf CEO Scott O鈥橬eil, adding the partnership 鈥渆levates this marquee event鈥 and aligns with their 鈥渟hared values of innovation, accessibility, and global impact.鈥

Following successful editions in 2024 and 2025, the Hong Kong leg has become a standout fixture on the league鈥檚 calendar. 鈥淭he first two editions of LIV Golf Hong Kong 鈥 were incredibly successful with record numbers of fans travelling to the city from the Greater Bay Area and far beyond,鈥 said Andy Kwok, captain of the Hong Kong Golf Club. He said the club was proud to bring LIV Golf to the region.

Kwok confirmed the event鈥檚 return for both 2026 and 2027, calling it a long-term collaboration that reflected the club鈥檚 ambition to grow the game and elevate Hong Kong鈥檚 profile on the global sporting stage.

  • He began his managerial career at the club before moving to FC Porto and guiding them to Champions League glory in 2004

LISBON: Portuguese club Benfica are set to name Jose Mourinho as their manager following the sacking of Bruno Lage in the aftermath of their 3-2 Champions League defeat by Qarabag, Portuguese TV station RTP reported on Wednesday.
Benfica said in a statement on Wednesday they had reached an agreement to part ways with Lage following their shock loss to the Azerbaijani side.
Former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager Mourinho left Turkish club Fenerbahce in August, two days after his side crashed out of the Champions League playoffs to Benfica.
Benfica did not immediately respond to an emailed request seeking confirmation of Mourinho鈥檚 appointment.
A move to Benfica would bring Mourinho鈥檚 remarkable career full circle, with the 62-year-old having begun his managerial career at the club before moving to rivals FC Porto and guiding them to Champions League glory in 2004.
From Porto he moved to Chelsea, famously describing himself as 鈥渢he Special One鈥 in a press conference to announce his arrival in the Premier League.
He won the Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 in his first spell with Chelsea, before adding a third crown in the 2014-15 season during his second stint at the club.
He joined Inter in 2008 and won the Champions League in 2010 to complete an unprecedented treble with the Serie A side.
The Portuguese coach, who also won trophies at Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester United, will be tasked with returning Benfica to the summit of Portuguese football.
The Lisbon-based club have finished second in the last two seasons of the Primeira Liga behind city rivals Sporting CP.
They are sixth with 10 points from four matches and next travel to face AVS Futebol SAD in the league on Saturday.
If appointed, Mourinho would cross paths with two of his former clubs in the Champions League group stage, with Benfica set to face Chelsea on September 30 and Real Madrid in January.
