How AI is transforming music discovery and production in 黑料社区
  • AI is creating new music experiences while preserving the Kingdom鈥檚 musical heritage through initiatives like MusiqAI
  • MDLBEAST Records, another Saudi initiative, leverages AI tools to spark creativity in music production

RIYADH: As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, its influence in 黑料社区 and globally extends far beyond personalizing music experiences. It is reshaping how music is created, consumed, and taught, revolutionizing the industry.

Musicians across the Kingdom are embracing new technology, with major local initiatives such as MDLBEAST Records leading the charge.

鈥淢DLBEAST Records believes AI is a powerful tool for sparking initial creative inspiration in music production 鈥 whether generating a first beat, a musical bar, or a legitimate sample,鈥 Matthew Dicks, executive director of music and talent at MDLBEAST Records, told Arab News.

鈥淲e encourage our artists to explore these possibilities within a framework of creative freedom.鈥

Launched in 2020, MDLBEAST Records is a 黑料社区 label that promotes and develops talent from the Middle East and North Africa region.

Part of MDLBEAST entertainment, its roster includes local stars Cosmicat and Dish Dash, among others, along with international names including Salvatore Ganacci.

While embracing AI鈥檚 creative potential, he emphasized the importance of ethics. 鈥淲e also recognize the ethical complexities surrounding AI in music,鈥 said Dicks. 鈥淚t is paramount that the rights of original songwriters and rights holders are always respected.

鈥淐opying, ripping, replicating, or infringing on intellectual property is strictly unacceptable. We are committed to navigating the evolving landscape of AI in music responsibly, ensuring its use enhances human creativity while upholding the integrity of artistic ownership.鈥

Beyond MDLBEAST Records, 黑料社区 is making strides in preserving its musical heritage while fostering innovation. In late 2024, the Saudi Music Commission launched MusiqAI, an initiative integrating AI-driven interactive learning to teach both Arab and Western instruments.

Unlike global platforms such as Suno, AIVA and Soundful, MusiqAI prioritizes Saudi sounds and Arab musical heritage, offering lessons on traditional instruments including the oud and qanun alongside the piano and guitar.

In line with Vision 2030, the platform nurtures musical talent through AI-powered real-time feedback, personalized lesson plans, and accredited certifications.

By blending cultural preservation with advanced technology, it aims to set a new standard for digital music education both regionally and globally.

DID YOU KNOW?

鈥 The global market for AI in music is projected to grow from $3.9 billion in 2023 to $38.7 billion by 2033.

鈥 AI tools such as AIVA, Mubert, and Suno are already used for backing tracks, jingles, and even entire songs.

鈥 Platforms like Spotify use AI to analyze user preferences and suggest music based on listening habits.

AI has also been used to enhance music discovery by adapting to individual preferences in real time, striking a balance between familiarity and exploration.

鈥淎I and personalization help you listen to more of what you like,鈥 Akshat Harbola, managing director of Spotify MENA, told Arab News. 鈥淎nd then what we try to do is introduce you to something you haven鈥檛 been exposed to in the past, but you might like it.鈥

As generative AI advances, the cost of developing innovative listening experiences is falling 鈥 a shift that Harbola believes is transformative for the industry.

鈥淚f we were to try to do something like this maybe five years back, it would be impossible because the cost would be so high,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou would have had to hire transcribers, producers, and you just wouldn鈥檛 be able to do it.

鈥淏ut now we are able to deliver these personalized sessions to millions of users.鈥

Despite AI鈥檚 growing influence, Harbola said human expertise will remain essential. 鈥淭he role of humans in AI, and when it comes to personalization, is actually going to increase over time 鈥 especially in music,鈥 he said.

He also highlighted the importance of cultural nuances in AI-driven recommendations, noting that even shared musical tastes can differ by location.

Aas AI continues to reshape the music industry, ethical concerns surrounding copyright and artistic integrity remain a significant topic of debate among musicians and creators. (Supplied)

鈥淓ven if you have the same music taste, what makes sense for somebody in Jeddah may not make sense for somebody in Sao Paulo,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o it鈥檚 very important that human and cultural expertise is built into what the machines are recommending and the products we鈥檙e rolling out.鈥

Nevertheless, as AI continues to reshape the music industry, ethical concerns surrounding copyright and artistic integrity remain a significant topic of debate among musicians and creators.

Addressing these concerns, Harbola emphasized the platform鈥檚 strict stance on copyright compliance. 鈥淲e are very clear that any content that infringes copyright cannot be on Spotify,鈥 he said.

Siddiq 鈥淪idney鈥 Malik, a filmmaker and user of AI in music, echoed this sentiment. 鈥淲e鈥檙e at the intersection of creativity and technology,鈥 he told Arab News. 鈥淲e鈥檙e sort of working to adapt the future of entertainment while we鈥檙e actively shaping it.鈥

Malik views AI as an empowering tool that is cost-effective, innovative, and cutting-edge, particularly in breaking linguistic barriers. 鈥淭his allows for a new era of accessibility and artistic expression,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 more than just a basic tool.鈥

Malik said it is not just about typing a prompt into a platform like ChatGPT 鈥 it is about creating an entire ecosystem.

鈥淲e鈥檙e deeply invested in the transformative power of AI music, but the key thing is that we believe it鈥檚 not about replacing human creativity 鈥 it鈥檚 about amplifying it,鈥 he said.

However, he warned that musicians who resist AI adoption could later face competition from advanced tools. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a critical moment for creators whereby if they do not embrace and collaborate with AI, they run the risk of competing with AI 鈥 which will be impossible.鈥

Drawing parallels to shifts in the film industry, Malik noted how creatives have adapted before and must do so again to embrace AI鈥檚 possibilities.

鈥淚 think we have had these shifts 鈥 analog to digital to virtual and now artificial,鈥 he said. 鈥淎I gives artists the power to be the masters of their own destiny, which is very important in the music industry.鈥

Despite AI鈥檚 growing influence, human expertise will remain essential, says听Akshat Harbola, managing director of Spotify MENA. (Supplied)

Riyadh-based musician Lun encapsulates the cautious yet curious approach many artists are taking toward the rapidly evolving music landscape shaped by AI.

鈥淚 have not used AI before in my own music because I never thought I needed to. But as a tool, it can be of help,鈥 he told Arab News.

While intrigued by AI鈥檚 potential, Lun highlighted ethical concerns that remain central to discussions across the industry.

鈥淚f an artist uses it to help with something they鈥檙e stuck on 鈥 to compile ideas so they can come up with an original part on their own 鈥 then I don鈥檛 see any harm in it,鈥 he said.

鈥淏ut if they use the tool to write the entire thing from A to Z, then I think we have a problem because it is no longer the artist who composed it, regardless of how they spin it.鈥

黑料社区 marks UN鈥檚 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

The world needs to restore approximately 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030 to combat desertification.
  • Event aims to spotlight urgent need to address growing challenges

JEDDAH: 黑料社区 has marked the UN鈥檚 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, an awareness event held annually on June 17.

The day aims to spotlight the urgent need to address the growing challenges of land degradation, desertification and drought.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said the event emphasized the importance of land restoration as a driver of opportunity, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

It helps to raise awareness of the critical role healthy ecosystems play in creating jobs, enhancing food and water security and strengthening economic resilience, the ministry added.

It also highlighted 黑料社区鈥檚 diverse geography and climate which is home to a unique biodiversity adapted to a range of climatic conditions.

The Kingdom has launched several major environmental initiatives, most notably the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to plant 10 billion trees over the coming decades.

The Kingdom is currently implementing 86 initiatives and programs with total investments exceeding SR705 billion ($188 billion), covering all aspects of the green economy.

These initiatives align with the core objectives of the SGI: reducing carbon emissions, expanding national afforestation, and protecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

More than 313,000 hectares of degraded land across the Kingdom have now been restored, and 115 million trees planted.

MEWA has also launched the Environmental Awareness Initiative, which is designed to raise environmental literacy and support Sustainable Development Goals.

The plan also emphasizes the importance of community engagement and cross-sector collaboration 鈥 from public institutions to private and non-profit entities.

As part of its efforts to monitor marine habitats, the ministry has conducted extensive field surveys along the Red Sea coast, covering over 600 coral reef sites, 200 seagrass locations and 100 mangrove areas.

According to UN data, desertification, land degradation and drought remain among the most pressing environmental challenges today, impacting up to 40 percent of the Earth鈥檚 land surface.

As the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021鈥2030) reaches its midpoint, there is a critical need to accelerate restoration efforts on a global scale.

If current trends continue, the world will need to restore 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030, creating a restoration economy valued at over $1 trillion.

The planet is currently losing healthy land at a rate equivalent to four football fields per second.

Munira Al-Hazani, president and founder of the Saudi Botanical Society, told Arab News: 鈥淭oday, as we commemorate the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the Saudi Botanical Society renews its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the Kingdom鈥檚 invaluable botanical heritage and tackling the critical environmental challenges that threaten our land.

鈥淎t this distinguished event, SABS had the privilege of presenting its mission through a dedicated pavilion 鈥 an inspiring botanical garden that embodies our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable solutions.

鈥淥n this critical day, I urge all sectors 鈥 governmental, private, and civil society 鈥 to unite with shared purpose and commitment.鈥
