Women鈥檚 tennis players now are eligible for paid maternity leave funded by 黑料社区鈥檚 PIF
  • More than 300 players are eligible for the fund, which is retroactive to Jan. 1. The WTA would not disclose how much money is involved
  • The WTA says 25 moms are active on tour; one, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic, won a title last month after returning from maternity leave in October

DUBAI: Pregnant players on the women鈥檚 tennis tour now can receive 12 months of paid maternity leave, and those who become parents via partner pregnancy, surrogacy or adoption can get two months off with pay, under a program sponsored by the Public Investment Fund of 黑料社区 and announced Thursday by the WTA.
鈥淚ndependent contractors and self-employed individuals don鈥檛 typically have these kinds of maternity benefits provided and available to them. They have to go out and sort of figure out those benefits for themselves,鈥 WTA CEO Portia Archer said. 鈥淭his is really sort of novel and groundbreaking.鈥
More than 300 players are eligible for the fund, which is retroactive to Jan. 1. The WTA would not disclose how much money is involved.

The program 鈥 which the WTA touted as 鈥渢he first time in women鈥檚 sports history that comprehensive maternity benefits are available to independent, self-employed athletes鈥 鈥 also provides grants for fertility treatments, including egg freezing and IVF.
It鈥檚 part of a wider trend: As women鈥檚 sports rise, there is an emphasis on meeting maternity and parental needs.
How many mothers are on the women鈥檚 tennis tour now?
The WTA says 25 moms are active on tour; one, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic, won a title last month after returning from maternity leave in October.
More and more pros in tennis have returned to action after having children, including past No. 1-ranked players and Grand Slam title winners such as Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka 鈥 a member of the WTA Players鈥 Council, which Archer acknowledged played a key role in pushing for this fund 鈥 thinks these benefits will encourage lower-ranked or lower-earning athletes to take as much time off as they feel they need after becoming a parent, rather than worrying about losing out on income while not entering tournaments.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 certainly one of the aims of the program: to provide the financial resources, the flexibility, the support, so that these athletes, regardless of where they鈥檙e ranked, but particularly those who earn less, will have that agency ... to decide when and how they want to start their families,鈥 Archer said.
And, Azarenka said, this could lead some players to decide to become parents before retiring from the sport for good.
鈥淓very feedback we鈥檝e heard from players who are mothers 鈥 or who are not mothers 鈥 is like, 鈥榃ow, this is an incredible opportunity for us,鈥欌 said 2012-13 Australian Open champion Azarenka, whose son, Leo, is 8. 鈥淚 believe it鈥檚 really going to change the conversation in sports. But going beyond sports, it鈥檚 a global conversation, and I鈥檓 happy that we鈥檙e (part of it).鈥
Other steps the WTA has taken in recent years to benefit players include steering more women into coaching, implementing safeguarding, attempting to stem cyberbullying, and increasing prize money with an eye to pay that equals what men receive in the sport.
What role does 黑料社区 have in tennis?
The Public Investment Fund, or PIF, became the WTA鈥檚 global partner last year.
The kingdom now hosts the season-ending WTA Finals and an ATP event for rising stars of men鈥檚 tennis. The PIF sponsors the WTA and ATP rankings.
鈥淲e wouldn鈥檛 have been able to provide the benefits were it not for this relationship and the funding that PIF provides,鈥 Archer said.
What are maternity leave policies in golf, soccer and basketball?
In golf, which like tennis is an individual sport without guaranteed salaries, the LPGA introduced an updated maternity leave policy in 2019 that lets athletes have the same playing status when they return.
In soccer, both the NWSL and the US women鈥檚 national team have collective bargaining agreements that allow for pregnancy leave and parental leave; the NWSL pays the full base salary while an athlete is pregnant.
In basketball, the WNBA鈥檚 CBA guarantees full pay during maternity leave.
For tennis, Azarenka said, the PIF WTA Maternity Fund Program is 鈥渏ust the beginning.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 an incredible beginning. Monumental change,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut I think we can look into how we can expand this fund for bigger, better things.鈥

Salah scores twice as Egypt qualify for 2026 World Cup
  • Egypt, who have competed at three previous World Cups, join fellow north African nations Morocco and Tunisia

CASABLANCA: Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scored twice to help Egypt beat Djibouti 3-0 in Casablanca on Wednesday and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The 33-year-old has netted nine times in a marathon qualifying campaign that began two years ago, and victory for Egypt gave them an unassailable five-point lead in Group A with one round remaining.

Twice African Footballer of the Year, Salah helped Liverpool win the Premier League a record-equalling 20th time last season, and captured the Golden Boot award with 29 goals.

But the Egypt captain has lost his spark with Liverpool this season, scoring just three goals in nine matches in all competitions.

After Ibrahim Adel put Egypt ahead on eight minutes, Salah netted six minutes later and again on 84 minutes to complete the scoring.

While Egypt have won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times, they have been less successful in World Cup qualifying, qualifying for the tournament just four times in 15 attempts 鈥 in 1934, 1990, 2018 and now 2026.

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey scored as Ghana trounced the Central African Republic 5-0 in Meknes, and need one point from their final match at home to Comoros to qualify.

Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, captain Jordan Ayew 71 and Kamaldeen Sulemana were the other scorers for the Black Stars, who led 1-0 at half-time.

Cape Verde came from two goals behind in Tripoli to draw 3-3 with Libya and edge closer to a first World Cup appearance.

The island nation of about 550,000 inhabitants off the coast of Senegal will clinch first place in Group D if they defeat Eswatini in Praia on Monday.

Known as the Blue Sharks, the Cape Verdeans are two points ahead of Cameroon, who beat Mauritius 2-0 in Saint-Pierre with Manchester United striker Bryan Mbeumo among the goals.

Cape Verde have 20 points after nine rounds, two more than Cameroon, whose eight World Cup appearances in an African record.

- Disastrous start -

Roberto Lopes, a defender with Republic of Ireland club Shamrock Rovers, conceded a first-minute own goal as Cape Verde made a disastrous start.

Telmo Arcanjo levelled for the island nation before goals either side of half-time from Ezoo el Mariamy and Mahmoud al Shalwi gave the Mediterranean Knights a 3-1 lead.

Sidny Cabral reduced the deficit and Cyprus-based Willy Semedo equalized on 82 minutes to set up a tense finish as Cape Verde sought a fourth goal and qualification.

A match-winner did not materialize, but they will be expected to beat Eswatini, who remained winless in the group after surrendering a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw with Angola in Lobamba.

Cameroon, firm pre-qualifying favorites to win the group, had to secure maximum points in Mauritius to keep alive their hopes of overtaking Cape Verde, but needed 92 minutes to ensure success.

Dynamo Moscow midfielder Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu put the Indomitable Lions ahead on 57 minutes and Mbeumo struck in added time with his fourth goal of the qualifying campaign.

Cameroon complete their schedule at home to Angola in Yaounde and must win to have any hope of automatic qualification.

Should Cape Verde finish first, Cameroon would hope to finish among the four best-ranked runners-up and qualify for play-offs in November.

The winners of the African mini-tournament, comprising single-match semifinals and a final, advance to six-nation inter-continental play-offs next March with two World Cup places up for grabs.

Eswatini looked set to end an eight-match winless run in the mini-league when South Africa-based Justice Figuareido pounced on long passes to score twice early in the second half.

Angola, with French coach Patrice Beaumelle in charge for the first time after the sacking of Portuguese Pedro Goncalves, halved the deficit through Jonathan Buatu.

Then slack Eswatini marking at a corner enabled Papel Ary to head the equalizer with 10 minutes of regular time remaining.

  • 鈥淲ith this match we take a historic step that projects La Liga and Spanish football into a new dimension,鈥 said Tebas
  • The game was due to be played at Villarreal鈥檚 home stadium but will now take place at the Hard Rock Stadium

BARCELONA: Barcelona will face Villarreal in Miami in a La Liga match on December 20, the Spanish top flight said Wednesday, making it the first European league fixture to be played abroad.
Earlier this week, European football governing body UEFA said they opposed the idea of games being played overseas but would permit it on an exceptional basis, along with a Serie A match in Australia in February between AC Milan and Como.
鈥淲ith this match we take a historic step that projects La Liga and Spanish football into a new dimension,鈥 said La Liga president Javier Tebas in a statement.
鈥淲e understand and respect the concerns that this decision may generate, but it is important to put it into context 鈥 it is a single match out of the 380 that make up the season.鈥
The game was due to be played at Villarreal鈥檚 home stadium but will now take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in the United States, in Florida.
Villarreal will take measures to compensate season ticket holders after the game was moved.
鈥淰illarreal season ticket holders will be able to travel for free to the match, and those who choose not to travel to Miami will enjoy a 30 percent discount on their season ticket price as part of the measures designed to reward their support and loyalty,鈥 said La Liga.
In September a total of 18 fan groups from both teams involved expressed their 鈥渃omplete opposition鈥 to the match taking place abroad.
La Liga have attempted to play matches overseas dating back to 2017 but the Spanish football federation (RFEF) frequently resisted, despite hosting the Spanish Super Cup in 黑料社区 themselves.
Barcelona鈥檚 rivals Real Madrid have also expressed their disapproval at the decision to take a La Liga game abroad.
They said in August hosting the game in Miami would 鈥渁lter the competitive balance鈥 of the league and set an 鈥渦nacceptable precedent.鈥

Motor racing-FIA list raises prospect of Ben Sulayem being re-elected unopposed
  • The deadline for putting forward candidates for the WMSC list was September 29
  • Three potential candidates have stated their intention to stand against the Emirati

LONDON: FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the head of Formula One鈥檚 governing body, could be re-elected unopposed in December after a list published on Wednesday left rivals seemingly unable to secure the necessary support to stand.
The International Automobile Federation named 29 people who are eligible for its World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), from which list each presidential candidate must draw a team of seven potential vice presidents for sport in order to progress to a vote.
Two must come from Europe and one each from South America, North America, Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East/North Africa.
South America has only one person on the list, however: Brazilian Fabiana Ecclestone, who is a current vice president for sport representing the continent and one of the most senior women at the FIA as well as being the wife of former F1 supremo Bernie.
The FIA said the absence of any other candidate from South America on the list could be due to no other member club putting anybody forward or to someone failing to secure the approval of the FIA nominations committee.
The deadline for putting forward candidates for the WMSC list was September 29.

THREE RIVAL CANDIDATES HAVE SIGNALLED INTENTION TO STAND
Africa has just two names on the list, Kenya鈥檚 Amina Mohamed and Rodrigo Rocha from Mozambique, and both have pledged allegiance to the incumbent with Rocha named on Ben Sulayem鈥檚 team.
Three potential candidates have stated their intention to stand against the Emirati, with American former Formula One chief steward Tim Mayer the main rival and first to announce his candidacy.
Two little-known female candidates 鈥 Swiss racer Laura Villars and Belgian model and journalist Virginie Philippot 鈥 have also put themselves forward more recently in media reports.
None of the three have so far named any members to their teams.
Ben Sulayem, who was elected in 2021 and has had a controversial first term as president, announced his running mates in September.
There was no immediate comment from Mayer, who will be attending next week鈥檚 US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and is expected to meet the media then.
Candidates for the presidency must submit their complete lists by October 24 and cannot include a candidate already entered on another presidential list.
The election will be held on December 12 at the FIA General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

RIYADH: Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has become football鈥檚 first billionaire player, according to figures released Wednesday in the .

The 40-year-old Al-Nassr striker has been added to Bloomberg鈥檚 list of the world鈥檚 richest people, with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion.

The valuation includes his career earnings, endorsements, and investments.

Bloomberg reported that Ronaldo earned more than $550 million in salary between 2002 and 2023, alongside lucrative sponsorships, including his decade-long deal with Nike, worth almost $18 million annually.

Ronaldo joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in 2022, reportedly becoming the highest-paid footballer in history. His contract, originally set to expire in June 2025, was recently extended by two years in a deal reportedly worth more than $400 million, which will keep him at the Riyadh club beyond his 42nd birthday.

Bloomberg compared Ronaldo鈥檚 earnings to those of his long-time rival Lionel Messi, noting that the Argentina and Inter Miami forward has earned over $600 million in pre-tax salary during his career.

Messi, who has been on a guaranteed annual pay of $20 million since joining Inter Miami in 2023, roughly 10 percent of Ronaldo鈥檚 income during the same period, is set to receive a stake in the MLS club upon retirement.

  • The Portuguese coach was revealed in a video on social media titled 鈥淭he King Rules the Game鈥
  • He has signed a two-year contract and is the fourth Portuguese to manage the club

RIYADH: Former AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao will take over as coach of Al-Ittihad following the sacking of Laurent Blanc, the 黑料社区n Pro League club announced on Wednesday.
The Portuguese coach, who also won 52 caps as a player, was revealed in a video on social media titled 鈥淭he King Rules the Game.鈥
鈥淰ictory is not a choice,鈥 says Conceicao, 50, in the video.

鈥淚t is an identity that defines us. Rivals may change and their allies will fall but the champion remains.
鈥淭he champion owns the game. I am Sergio Conceicao, I came to build glory with Ittihad.鈥
He has signed a two-year contract and is the fourth Portuguese to manage the club, the most recent being current West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo who left in 2023.

Conceicao spent seven years in charge of Porto winning the Portuguese league three times before moving to Milan in the middle of last season.
He was fired after AC Milan finished eighth in Serie A and lost to Bologna in the Italian Cup final.
Al-Ittihad are currently third in the Saudi Pro League, three points behind leaders Al-Nassr.
It was a 2-0 defeat by their rivals at the end of September that spelt the end of Blanc鈥檚 14 months in charge.
