Women鈥檚 tennis players now are eligible for paid maternity leave funded by 黑料社区鈥檚 PIF
  • More than 300 players are eligible for the fund, which is retroactive to Jan. 1. The WTA would not disclose how much money is involved
  • The WTA says 25 moms are active on tour; one, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic, won a title last month after returning from maternity leave in October

DUBAI: Pregnant players on the women鈥檚 tennis tour now can receive 12 months of paid maternity leave, and those who become parents via partner pregnancy, surrogacy or adoption can get two months off with pay, under a program sponsored by the Public Investment Fund of 黑料社区 and announced Thursday by the WTA.
鈥淚ndependent contractors and self-employed individuals don鈥檛 typically have these kinds of maternity benefits provided and available to them. They have to go out and sort of figure out those benefits for themselves,鈥 WTA CEO Portia Archer said. 鈥淭his is really sort of novel and groundbreaking.鈥
More than 300 players are eligible for the fund, which is retroactive to Jan. 1. The WTA would not disclose how much money is involved.

The program 鈥 which the WTA touted as 鈥渢he first time in women鈥檚 sports history that comprehensive maternity benefits are available to independent, self-employed athletes鈥 鈥 also provides grants for fertility treatments, including egg freezing and IVF.
It鈥檚 part of a wider trend: As women鈥檚 sports rise, there is an emphasis on meeting maternity and parental needs.
How many mothers are on the women鈥檚 tennis tour now?
The WTA says 25 moms are active on tour; one, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic, won a title last month after returning from maternity leave in October.
More and more pros in tennis have returned to action after having children, including past No. 1-ranked players and Grand Slam title winners such as Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka 鈥 a member of the WTA Players鈥 Council, which Archer acknowledged played a key role in pushing for this fund 鈥 thinks these benefits will encourage lower-ranked or lower-earning athletes to take as much time off as they feel they need after becoming a parent, rather than worrying about losing out on income while not entering tournaments.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 certainly one of the aims of the program: to provide the financial resources, the flexibility, the support, so that these athletes, regardless of where they鈥檙e ranked, but particularly those who earn less, will have that agency ... to decide when and how they want to start their families,鈥 Archer said.
And, Azarenka said, this could lead some players to decide to become parents before retiring from the sport for good.
鈥淓very feedback we鈥檝e heard from players who are mothers 鈥 or who are not mothers 鈥 is like, 鈥榃ow, this is an incredible opportunity for us,鈥欌 said 2012-13 Australian Open champion Azarenka, whose son, Leo, is 8. 鈥淚 believe it鈥檚 really going to change the conversation in sports. But going beyond sports, it鈥檚 a global conversation, and I鈥檓 happy that we鈥檙e (part of it).鈥
Other steps the WTA has taken in recent years to benefit players include steering more women into coaching, implementing safeguarding, attempting to stem cyberbullying, and increasing prize money with an eye to pay that equals what men receive in the sport.
What role does 黑料社区 have in tennis?
The Public Investment Fund, or PIF, became the WTA鈥檚 global partner last year.
The kingdom now hosts the season-ending WTA Finals and an ATP event for rising stars of men鈥檚 tennis. The PIF sponsors the WTA and ATP rankings.
鈥淲e wouldn鈥檛 have been able to provide the benefits were it not for this relationship and the funding that PIF provides,鈥 Archer said.
What are maternity leave policies in golf, soccer and basketball?
In golf, which like tennis is an individual sport without guaranteed salaries, the LPGA introduced an updated maternity leave policy in 2019 that lets athletes have the same playing status when they return.
In soccer, both the NWSL and the US women鈥檚 national team have collective bargaining agreements that allow for pregnancy leave and parental leave; the NWSL pays the full base salary while an athlete is pregnant.
In basketball, the WNBA鈥檚 CBA guarantees full pay during maternity leave.
For tennis, Azarenka said, the PIF WTA Maternity Fund Program is 鈥渏ust the beginning.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 an incredible beginning. Monumental change,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut I think we can look into how we can expand this fund for bigger, better things.鈥

Spurs get Thomas Frank off to flier as Erling Haaland sparks revamped City in Wolves win
  • Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday
  • City鈥檚 failure to defend the title after winning it for the previous four seasons has prompted a major overhaul from Guardiola

LONDON: Tottenham manager Thomas Frank enjoyed a 鈥渄ream鈥 home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley, while Erling Haaland inspired new-look Manchester City鈥檚 4-0 rout of Wolves on the opening weekend of the Premier League season on Saturday.

Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Tottenham鈥檚 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League last term.

Postecoglou was undone by Tottenham鈥檚 worst domestic season since 1976-77 as they finished just above the relegation zone in 17th place.

Frank鈥檚 bid to revive Tottenham鈥檚 league fortunes got off to the perfect start in north London.

Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus鈥 cross to open the scoring.

The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison鈥檚 bicycle kick converted the Ghanaian鈥檚 delivery.

Brennan Johnson was Tottenham鈥檚 Europa League final hero with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third.

鈥淧erfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important,鈥 Frank said.

At Molineux, Pep Guardiola unveiled his City revamp as he bids to bounce back from last season鈥檚 third-place finish.

City鈥檚 failure to defend the title after winning it for the previous four seasons has prompted a major overhaul from Guardiola.

Despite Haaland鈥檚 double, it was new signing Tijjani Reijnders who stole the show with a hand in all of City鈥檚 first three goals.

鈥淲e knew he is a top signing for the coming years for City,鈥 said Guardiola on Reijnders outstanding Premier League debut after a 拢46.5 million move from AC Milan.

鈥淥f course we have changed after last season with many injuries and problems 鈥 fresh energy this season.鈥

Reijnders stroked in his first City goal in between two predatory finishes from Haaland.

Another City new boy Rayan Cherki, lured from Lyon in the summer, rounded off the scoring.

For the past two seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down.

Sunderland made the perfect start to attempting to buck that trend with a 3-0 victory over West Ham.

Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka is among pool of new signings attracted to the Stadium of Light.

But it was three players key to their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 who scored.

Eliezer Mayenda鈥檚 looping header gave the Black Cats lift off on the hour mark.

Center-back Dan Ballard headed in the second before Wilson Isidor rounded off a huge win in stoppage time.

Newcastle missed the wantaway Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa鈥檚 red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time.

Isak had not been involved during Newcastle鈥檚 pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a 拢110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected.

The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James鈥 Park on August 25.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he wants an end to the saga one way or another.

鈥淔rom my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It鈥檚 taking away the focus of the players and the supporters,鈥 said Howe

鈥淲e want to be united together. We鈥檇 like a resolution, but we鈥檙e not in control of that.鈥

Fulham鈥檚 Rodrigo Muniz struck in the 96th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw at Brighton after Matt O鈥橰iley鈥檚 penalty put the Seagulls in front.

Arsenal, top-flight runners-up for the last three seasons, are in action on Sunday when they travel to Manchester United.

Champions Liverpool began their title defense with a 4-2 win against Bournemouth on Friday.

  • Ghanian international added that the incident during the Premier League season opener on Friday had also shown football鈥檚 鈥渂est side when it mattered most鈥

LIVERPOOL: Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo said on Saturday the racist abuse he alleges was directed at him by a Liverpool fan at Anfield 鈥渨ill stay with me forever.鈥

But the Ghanian international added that the incident during the Premier League season opener on Friday had also shown football鈥檚 鈥渂est side when it mattered most.鈥

Police have launched an investigation after Semenyo was abused by someone in the crowd during the first half of Liverpool鈥檚 4-2 win.

Play was halted and a 47-year-old man was later ejected from the stadium.

Semenyo, 25, went on to score twice as Bournemouth came back from 2-0 down but Liverpool scored two late goals to seal the win.

鈥淟ast night at Anfield will stay with me forever 鈥 not because of one person鈥檚 words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,鈥 Semenyo said on social media.

鈥淭o my Bournemouth team-mates who supported me in that moment, to the Liverpool players and fans who showed their true character, to the Premier League officials who handled it professionally 鈥 thank you. Football showed its best side when it mattered most.

鈥淪coring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play 鈥 for moments like these, for my team-mates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be.

鈥淭he overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together,鈥 he added.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk described the incident as a 鈥渄isgrace鈥 and said it showed how much work needed to be done to educate people about racism.

鈥淲hat else can we do? Because this is the very odd one (case) that has managed to say something that is obviously a disgrace,鈥 the Dutchman said.

鈥淭he only thing we can do is deal with it by dealing with him personally and try to educate the next generation. That is the only way to try and kick it out, in my opinion.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 believe it. These things shouldn鈥檛 happen but unfortunately it does and it is an absolute disgrace in my eyes.

鈥淭hese things should never happen in the world, not only (never in) football.鈥

Van Dijk also said he was 鈥渉ere for Antoine, whenever he needs it and we are here as a club to deal with it in the best way possible because it shouldn鈥檛 happen.鈥
