Saudi Cabinet rejects displacement of Palestinians, backs Arab summit鈥檚 Gaza plan

RIYADH: 黑料社区鈥檚 Cabinet on Tuesday affirmed full support for the decisions of the extraordinary Arab League summit in Cairo that rejected the displacement of Palestinians from their land, and aimed to end the disastrous repercussions resulting from the war.

It reiterated the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to obtain their legitimate rights, including their right to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The final statement adopted by the summit called for the deployment of an international protection and peacekeeping force in the Palestinian territories.

It adopted the plan submitted by Egypt with regard to Gaza, in full coordination with Palestine and Arab countries.

It also emphasized the achievement of a just and comprehensive peace that fulfills the rights of the Palestinian people.

During the weekly Cabinet session chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, ministers condemned Israel鈥檚 decision to stop the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards these serious violations, activate international accountability mechanisms, and ensure sustainable access to aid.

The Cabinet tackled the joint statement issued after President Joseph Aoun鈥檚 visit to Riyadh regarding the importance of fully implementing the Taif Agreement, which ended Lebanon鈥檚 civil war and was negotiated in 黑料社区 in 1989, and relevant international resolutions.

The joint statement also stressed the importance of ensuring Lebanon鈥檚 sovereignty over all its territories, restricting weapons to the Lebanese state, supporting the Lebanese army鈥檚 national role, and calling for the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from all Lebanese territories.

Aoun was welcomed at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh on Monday, where discussions with the crown prince focused on strengthening bilateral relations.

During their talks, both leaders agreed to study obstacles affecting the resumption of exports from Lebanon to 黑料社区 and procedures to facilitate Saudi travel to Lebanon. They also reaffirmed their commitment to Lebanon鈥檚 economic recovery and the implementation of reforms aligned with international standards.

In a diffident matter, the Cabinet affirmed the state鈥檚 continued support for the social services system and national initiatives that aim to provide adequate housing for qualifying families, praising in this regard the cooperation and integration of roles between government, private and non-profit entities, in addition to community members, to achieve the goals of the Jood Regions campaign.

The Jood Regions campaign was first launched during Ramadan 2024 to provide more than 10,000 housing units for the most needy families across the Kingdom鈥檚 13 provinces.

King Salman and the crown prince have donated a total of SR150 million ($40 million) to the second Jood Regions campaign, launched at the start of this year鈥檚 Ramadan.

The Cabinet reviewed the progress of major development and service projects that aim to enhance the comprehensive development process in the Kingdom.

The ministers offered congratulation on the opening of the first phase of Sports Boulevard project in Riyadh, which will contribute to consolidating the position of the city among the best global cities.

The project, led by the Sports Boulevard Foundation, is now 40 percent complete, with 83 km of the route being accessible to visitors since Feb. 27.

The initiative, launched by King Salman in March 2019, aligns with the country鈥檚 Quality-of-Life Program, outlined in Saudi Vision 2030, by creating greener, more sustainable cities that encourage participation in activities like walking, cycling, and horse riding. It also aims to transform Riyadh into one of the world鈥檚 most livable cities by blending sports with cultural, artistic, and environmental opportunities.

  • Competitors step back in time as race passes historical landmarks

RIYADH: AlUla Desert Blaze, an annual race, kicked off again this year on Friday with over 500 runners from various countries taking up the challenge.

The event is held over two days and is open to all levels of runners, from professionals to amateurs. Four race distances 鈥 5 km, 10 km, 21.1 km (half marathon), and 42.2 km (full marathon) 鈥 take the competitors through AlUla鈥檚 dramatic landscapes, from sand dunes to historical landmarks.

For 42-year-old Mohammed Dakhil, AlUla holds a special place in his heart as it is where he had his first 50 km ultramarathon trail run in 2023.

鈥淭hat was the first time I ever got to experience running in the landscape of AlUla and just seeing the natural beauty of it. Any opportunity I get to come and run is something that I always look forward to, because for some reason, it鈥檚 the one place that really allows me to disconnect and feel like I can really connect with myself and be present when I鈥檓 running,鈥 he told Arab News.

Dakhil will take part in the race on Saturday. The courses begin at Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the full marathon route passes near the Maraya building and other prominent AlUla sites.

As a regular runner and chief operating officer of the gym chain N2Fitness, Dakhil is a dedicated trainer 鈥 whether endurance, strength, or functional training. For him, running is more mental than physical. 鈥淚n terms of actual marathon running, the 42 km distance, during my training, I would take the distances up to 21 km, 25 km, and so on. So that enables me to be able to do the distance comfortably,鈥 he said.

Distance runners frequently hit a mental block that hinders the body鈥檚 capacity to continue under pain and pressure 鈥 this is where the 鈥渞eal training鈥 happens to prepare for such races.

鈥淣o matter how much physical training I do, to get through a marathon and to do it in a positive way, a big part of it is really more mental than people think,鈥 Dakhil said.

鈥淲hat attracts me to this is I still get to see the beautiful landscape of AlUla, but it presents a different challenge, and that challenge is that it鈥檚 extremely hot. To really see how far I can go and I can withstand and continue to push through the summer heat while under the sun is a different challenge of its own. And, honestly, that鈥檚 something that I love doing. I just love pushing myself to the limit.鈥

黑料社区 launched its first official marathon in 2022 and is committed to expanding the fitness scene, so it comes as no surprise that the annual marathon attracts international participation.

鈥淚 feel very proud every year as a Saudi to see these events being hosted in Saudi and to see, year over year, how the community grows, and the amount of people that come to these events grows,鈥 Dakhil said.

鈥淲e notice it. And the best part about it is that you see people from all around the world, and it really makes us proud.鈥

The race takes place in the same month as Dakhil鈥檚 birthday 鈥 an opportunity he takes to celebrate the occasion and achieve a new goal.

Lebanese American competitor Ali Younes also shares a birthday in August. The run is partly a celebration, but also a chance to give back to the place where his running journey began. Younes started taking running more seriously when he moved to the Kingdom a year ago and joined the running community We Run.

鈥淓verybody that comes to this group, sometimes (starting) from scratch, has found their way and path to develop, and they found the support from the coaches and even from the running mates,鈥 he said.

Younes has lived in several countries due to his job in the UN, but said that 鈥淚 haven鈥檛 seen such a supportive community in any other place.鈥

He spent four months preparing for the race, and also plans to run the Chicago Marathon in October.

Younes, who trains with the We Run group and his personal coach Hadeel Ashour, said that running is also 鈥渁bout nutrition, hydrating your body, sleeping well, and mental toughness.鈥

He added: 鈥淩unning is always easy to do. If you want to run, run a 1 km, but if you really want to experience life with all its ups and downs and challenges, you need to run a marathon.鈥

While the summer heat might discourage some, especially in the midst of the desert, the runners said that the challenge will only add to the satisfaction of finishing their races.

Aghiad Massarani, who also began running two years ago after joining We Run, has been training for the past six weeks for AlUla Desert Blaze. 鈥淚鈥檝e done a mix of speed sessions, long runs, and heat runs. I even did a couple of afternoon runs to help my body adapt to the climate,鈥 he said.

The race takes place amid AlUla鈥檚 diverse natural landscapes, offering participants an exceptional sporting experience in a destination that celebrates the beauty of nature and the spirit of community and adventure.

The race is considered one of the key events in the AlUla Moments calendar activities held throughout the year, allowing visitors and participants the opportunity to explore the rich natural and historical landmarks of the region.
