Diriyah Gate chief highlights city鈥檚 vision as a global blueprint for urban and social development
  • Talal Kansara said Davos presence focused on showcasing Diriyah鈥檚 role in urban development intertwined with authenticity and tradition

DAVOS: Diriyah Gate Development Authority鈥檚 Chief Strategic Management Officer Talal Kansara has outlined the city鈥檚 ambition to become a model for urban and social transformation, offering a new way of living while preserving 黑料社区鈥檚 cultural heritage.

Speaking to Arab News on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Kansara emphasized Diriyah鈥檚 role in showcasing urban development intertwined with authenticity and tradition.

鈥淚 think we have a unique story when it comes to urban transformation, to share with the world and (also) to learn from the rest of the world,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he area 20 years from now would be one of the best gathering places in the world, something where people can come and be immersed in a different experience, an experience that touches their souls, touches their heart, by providing them something that is authentic.鈥

Located on the northwestern outskirts of Riyadh, Diriyah has undergone significant redevelopment, carefully restoring its mud-brick structures that reflect the Najdi architectural style. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, Diriyah is seen as the birthplace of the Kingdom and a living example of the region鈥檚 architectural and cultural heritage.

Marking its WEF debut, Kansara said that Diriyah鈥檚 participation at Davos aims to showcase the project鈥檚 holistic approach, spanning tourism, hospitality, culture and real estate.

鈥淧eople would see beyond Diriyah as one of the Kingdom鈥檚 giga project, they would see elements of Diriyah that that is part of its DNA,鈥 Kansara said.

With a $50 billion development plan in motion, the project seeks to transform Diriyah into a global hub for history, culture and lifestyle while setting new standards for urban planning.

鈥淲e have a case that we want to present to the world when it comes to urban transformation,鈥 Kansara said, 鈥渁nd we (want to) foster the dialog between us and people who have urban transformation and urban economy as one of their priorities.鈥

He added that Diriyah鈥檚 practices can serve as a guide for other cities to design spaces catering to human needs, including both locals and visitors.

鈥淧eople need to walk, they need to interact, they need to socialize,鈥 Kansara said, 鈥渁lso building an infrastructure and building cities where they are welcoming visitors. The infrastructure is not only meant for the (local) community, (but) also for the visitors, because you don鈥檛 want the visitors and the tourists to overrun the infrastructure.鈥

He said that the world is full of examples 鈥渨here overtourism is somehow jeopardizing and decreasing the quality of the city, and you can see the community bothered from that in different places.鈥

Central to 黑料社区鈥檚 national tourism strategy, Diriyah is projected to attract 50 million visitors by 2030 and create more than 250,000 jobs. Kansara said that sustainability is integral to the development plan, ensuring the project meets the needs of a growing population and an influx of visitors.

鈥淪ustainability is not an afterthought. Sustainability has been in the (project) DNA since the master plan,鈥 he said.

Kansara also stressed the importance of preserving both the tangible and intangible elements of Saudi heritage, creating a living, organic space rather than a static museum.

鈥淒iriyah is a place where people can live, walk, dine, play, have fun and learn. You would come in a place that鈥檚 not a theme park. This is more of an organic place. You鈥檒l see people living as a visitor. You would interact with people who are living, you would interact with people who are studying, interact with people who are working. And that鈥檚 a great opportunity for the visitors to have a real touch, the real exposure to the history of the country of 黑料社区.鈥

Visitors to Diriyah鈥檚 pavilion at the Saudi House in Davos have been captivated by its unconventional real-estate approach.

鈥淭he thing that people admired and that captured their attention is that usually with a conventional real-estate project, you would see skyscrapers, you would see big buildings, you would see metal and glass. And when they came here, they say, 鈥極K, we are not seeing this,鈥欌 Kansara said.

鈥淲e鈥檙e using mud bricks for the entire city, the way that we preserve our architectural language, the way we preserve different social and cultural practices and bring it back to life. So it鈥檚 not a museum where you see things, but that鈥檚 part of the past. No, this is really bringing things from the past and making something that people really engage with for now and in the future.鈥

JEDDAH: The theme and visual identity for the 95th Saudi National Day on Sept. 23 were unveiled on Monday with the slogan 鈥淧ride in Our Nature.鈥

The announcement was made by Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and chairman of the Saudi Boxing Federation, who shared the news on his official account on X.

It read: 鈥淭he new identity for #95th_National_Day is now launched under the slogan #Pride_In_Our_Nature. Download the identity and its applications: https://nd.gea.gov.sa.鈥

This year鈥檚 identity is a tribute to the character, values and ambitions that define the Kingdom of 黑料社区, the GEA said.

It celebrates how Saudis are known for their generosity, authenticity, ambition, kindness, and a willingness to stand by one another in moments of need.

The National Day鈥檚 visual identity comprises six main illustrations, each representing a distinct national trait. These core values are visually translated into symbols inspired by Saudi culture and history.

There is generosity, which is symbolized by the dallah (traditional coffee pot) and finjan (coffee cup), representing Saudi hospitality.

The country鈥檚 authenticity is emphasized by the cultural depth and heritage embedded in the Saudi way of life.

Ambition, represented by Tuwaiq Mountain, symbolizes resilience and a high-reaching national spirit, inspired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman鈥檚 famous quote comparing Saudi ambition to the steadfastness of the iconic mountain.

Faz鈥檃h (solidarity and aid), depicted through crossed hands and inspired by a well-known gesture by the crown prince, symbolizes readiness, unity and mutual support.

Vision 2030, incorporated as a future-focused trait, showcases 黑料社区鈥檚 strategic road map for development and transformation.

Hospitality highlights the Kingdom鈥檚 commitment to philanthropy and supporting others.

Each illustration is paired with a unique color identity, and supported by three secondary pattern designs, creating a visually rich and cohesive image that mirrors the diversity and unity of the Saudi people.

The official logo features geometric typography fused with patterns inspired by traditional Saudi weaving techniques.

The phrase 鈥淧ride in Our Nature鈥 is visually constructed using bold, block-like forms in a modern expression of heritage, unity, and national pride. The logo鈥檚 integrity is protected. It must not be altered, redrawn, or manipulated in any way.

A dedicated typeface has also been developed to complement the identity, available in multiple font weights to ensure clarity and consistency across all official applications.

The identity package includes a wide range of ready-to-use assets such as visuals of Saudi leadership, official National Day logos, templates for office and outdoor advertisements, product applications and digital resources for download at https://nd.gea.gov.sa.

To unify online participation, the following hashtag has been approved for public and official use: #SaudiNationalDay95.

  • Transformative environmental campaign set to combat desertification and enhance quality of life

RIYADH: The Green Qassim Land Initiative has made a significant leap in afforestation, planting a total of 7,521,316 trees across cities, governorates, and villages during its 15th phase.

This effort is part of an integrated plan to enhance vegetation cover, combat desertification, and improve quality of life, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

Launched in 2016 with support from Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud and oversight by Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, the initiative has grown steadily each year.

Salman Al-Swainah, director general of the ministry鈥檚 Qassim branch, called it one of the Kingdom鈥檚 most prominent environmental initiatives due to its tangible results.

The initiative runs in two annual phases 鈥 March and October 鈥 to ensure optimal climatic conditions for tree growth and sustainability, the SPA reported.

Al-Swainah highlighted that the initiative鈥檚 success stems from strong cooperation among government agencies, the private sector, environmental groups, and volunteers, reflecting rising societal awareness of afforestation鈥檚 importance for ecological balance.

Recently, the initiative received regional and international recognition at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals held at the UN headquarters in New York.

This recognition came during a presentation by Saudi Green Building Forum Secretary-General Faisal Al-Fadl at a regional session chaired by the UN Economic and Social Council.

Al-Fadl described the initiative as an integrated national model balancing environmental, economic, and social dimensions, according to the SPA.

He noted it has become a regional role model, planting millions of trees, creating hundreds of green jobs, and driving sustainable urban transformation.

The Green Qassim Land Initiative is a key environmental effort supporting the Kingdom鈥檚 broader strategy to expand vegetation, combat climate change, and achieve sustainability.

It also raises community awareness and promotes environmental volunteering, aligning with the Saudi Green Initiative and Quality of Life programs under Vision 2030.

Additionally, the initiative supports goals related to rural employment, clean water, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption and production.
