5 things we learned from 26th Gulf Cup in Kuwait
  • Bahrain are an emerging force, but 黑料社区, the UAE and Qatar will hope to move on from disappointing campaigns when World Cup qualification returns

LONDON: The 26th Arabian Gulf Cup ended on Saturday with Bahrain coming from behind to defeat Oman 2-1 in the final in Kuwait City. Here are five takeaways from the latest edition of the biennial tournament.

More questions than answers for 黑料社区

黑料社区鈥檚 semi-final exit after a 2-1 loss to Oman ended a disappointing 10 days or so. The positives were that the team managed to score in all four games, which will be welcome after four World Cup qualifiers without a goal in October and November.

But Herve Renard鈥檚 men were deservedly beaten by Bahrain, needed a last-minute goal to defeat Yemen in a game they could easily have lost and, a good spell against Iraq apart, struggled to find rhythm and fluency. At least they made it to the semi-finals but then losing to Oman, who played with 10 men for two-thirds of the game, was a poor way to end the competition.

The coach may now know more about what his team needs but does not look any closer to finding the solutions, especially when star Salem Al-Dawsari does not provide them. Renard, less than three months back in the job, starts 2025 under more pressure with a team that is low on confidence and looking leaky at the back.

Bahrain, an emerging force

The Reds had a good 2024 and 2025 has started perfectly. As Croatian coach Dragan Talajic comes up to his first anniversary in Manama, he has helped to fashion a tough-to-beat Bahrain that have real team spirit, work hard and are growing in confidence going forward. They deserved to win their group and then dug deep in the knockout stage. Mohamed Marhoon sums it all up. The midfielder scored the only goal against Kuwait in the last-four clash and then in the final against Oman, his energy, skill and willingness to run at defenders created both goals and delivered the trophy.

There is a resilience about this Bahrain team and the champions can look forward to 2025 with confidence and even dreams of a first World Cup appearance.

No new-coach bounce for Qatar, UAE inconsistent

Go back a year and Qatar were just about to start a successful, and slightly surprising, defence of the Asian Cup. As they lifted the trophy and celebrated, it was assumed that the Maroons were going to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. But a poor start to the third round cost 鈥淭intin鈥 Marquez his job in December and he was replaced by fellow Spaniard Luis Garcia. There was no new-coach bounce however as Qatar ended up bottom of Group A without a win. Garcia and his men will look back at missed chances proving costly.

Although the UAE had exactly the same record, goals scored and conceded, coach Paulo Bento will be a little happier. There were some new faces who made the trip to Kuwait but the Portuguese boss needs to get to grips with the team鈥檚 inconsistency.聽

Iraq the biggest losers

The holders made the short trip to Kuwait in decent form. They were the only one of the seven teams involved in World Cup qualification to be sitting in the automatic spots in their group. A win at the Gulf Cup would really have put a spring in their step. Yet, it all went wrong and coach Jesus Casas, linked with the vacant South Korea job in the summer, is under pressure.聽

The Spanish boss talked of having the chance to look at some young players but there were few positives. Star striker Aymen Hussein scored to give a hard-fought win over Yemen in the opening game. It was not great but a potential platform to challenge for the trophy. It didn鈥檛 happen. There was a 2-0 loss to Bahrain when the Lions of Mesopotamia were outfought and outthought by the eventual winners. It was followed by a 3-1 defeat to 黑料社区. The usually strong backline looked flimsy, which is a problem when there is a lack of creativity going forward.聽

Bigger challenges await

Even when the celebrations die down in Manama, fans, players and media in Bahrain would swap it all for a place at the 2026 World Cup. Seven of the eight teams had an eye or more on the resumption of qualification in March and with four of the 10 games remaining in the third round, this really is a crucial time.

For the likes of 黑料社区, the UAE, Qatar and Iraq, their disappointing results will quickly be forgotten if they hit the ground running in the coming months and get the wins to take them to North America. If so, they will point out that the Gulf Cup counted as vital preparation that was more important than results.聽Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait will be looking to build on their positive performances and results to make strides towards North America.

It remains to be seen what the legacy of this tournament turns out to be.

Son Heung-min signs with MLS鈥 Los Angeles FC after a decade at Tottenham
  • Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur
  • The 33-year-old South Korean superstar will join LAFC as a designated player after the club paid a reported fee of more than $20 million
LOS ANGELES: Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 33-year-old South Korean superstar forward is joining LAFC three days after he formally announced his decision to leave Tottenham.
Son attended LAFC鈥檚 Leagues Cup match against Tigres at BMO Stadium on Tuesday night, watching from a luxury suite. LAFC will formally introduce Son at a news conference Wednesday, but the club showed the forward on the stadium video board late in the first half as he waved to roaring fans thrilled by their team鈥檚 landmark acquisition.
LAFC, a deep-pocketed club with significant team success in its first eight seasons of existence, reportedly paid a transfer fee of more than $20 million, which could end up being the most ever for an MLS move.
Son was a beloved presence at Spurs, scoring 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances for the North London club while rising to global prominence with his combination of speed, playmaking skill and finishing acumen.
The captain was given a memorable farewell last week in Seoul during Tottenham鈥檚 exhibition match against Newcastle, getting a guard of honor from both teams and tearfully exiting in the second half while nearly 65,000 fans roared.
But South Korea鈥檚 most popular athlete 鈥 and almost certainly the greatest Asian soccer player in history 鈥 has chosen an auspicious stage for the next chapter of his groundbreaking career.
Los Angeles has the world鈥檚 largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea, with the city鈥檚 vibrant Koreatown district sitting just a couple of miles from LAFC鈥檚 BMO Stadium.
LAFC is undoubtedly hoping to market Son as a soccer counterpart to the Dodgers鈥 Shohei Ohtani, albeit on a smaller scale. Ohtani, the three-time MLB MVP from Japan who is on a trajectory to become the greatest Asian player in baseball history, draws fans from across the Pacific Rim to Dodger Stadium while attracting millions in sponsorships and partnerships for the Dodgers.
Son鈥檚 move to California also puts him in position to make an impact on and off the field at the World Cup, which will be held across North America in 2026. Son, the captain of his national team, already has said he will play in his fourth World Cup.
After leading Tottenham to its first European trophy in decades by winning the Europa League in May in a fitting cap to his English career, Son will go straight into the MLS Cup race when suits up for his new club. LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference at 10-6-6, but with multiple games in hand on every team in front of it because of its participation in the Club World Cup.
Son鈥檚 seven Premier League goals last season were his fewest since his Tottenham debut, but he still appears to have the pace and skill necessary to be a difference-maker at any level. He also turned 33 only a month ago, putting him on the younger end of the global stars recently arriving in MLS.
Lionel Messi and Marco Reus were 35 and Luis Su谩rez was 37 when they went stateside in recent years, while Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris were both 37 when they joined LAFC last year.
Son will be reunited in Los Angeles with longtime Tottenham teammate Lloris, who has been outstanding since becoming LAFC鈥檚 goalkeeper last season.
High-scoring French forward Denis Bouanga is the only designated player currently under contract for LAFC, and general manager John Thorrington has been criticized by some fans for not using the full power of his financial resources this season. LAFC spent months on an ultimately failed attempt to get France鈥檚 Antoine Griezmann to leave Atl茅tico Madrid.
Bouanga and Son have both thrived on the left wing during their careers, but Son likely has more positional versatility than Bouanga, making him a candidate to line up in the middle or even on the right wing.
Son seems to be an infinitely better fit for LAFC than Giroud, who moved to Lille last month after one disappointing year in California. LAFC plays a counterattacking, speed-based style that didn鈥檛 suit Giroud鈥檚 goal-scoring strengths, while Son should be right at home in such a system.
But LAFC also could alter its style in the winter after coach Steve Cherundolo departs for Germany following four largely successful seasons highlighted by an MLS Cup championship.

  • Evenepoel鈥檚 move will strengthen Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe, where he will team up with Primoz Roglic and Florian Lipowitz, who finished third in last month鈥檚 Tour de France

LONDON: Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave the team where he became one of the best riders of his generation to join Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe from next season.

The 25-year-old Belgian rider informed Soudal Quick-Step that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2026. The team said on Tuesday it has agreed to release him early.

鈥淎fter taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team鈥檚 ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season,鈥 Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement.

Evenepoel signed with Soudal Quick-Step at a young age after the squad鈥檚 former manager Patrick Lefevere spotted his immense potential. Under Lefevere鈥檚 supervision, Evenepoel won prestigious races, including the 2022 Spanish Vuelta, two stages of the Tour de France and two titles at Li猫ge-Bastogne-Li猫ge.

He finished third at the 2024 Tour de France but withdrew from this year鈥檚 edition. Widely considered the best time trialist in the world, Evenepoel remains focused on winning more Grand Tours.

鈥淩emco stands for ambition. He doesn鈥檛 just want to ride 鈥 he wants to shape cycling,鈥 said Ralph Denk, the CEO of Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe. 鈥淗e brings not only exceptional athletic talent but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring.鈥

Evenepoel鈥檚 move will strengthen Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe, where he will team up with Primoz Roglic and Florian Lipowitz, who finished third in last month鈥檚 Tour de France.

鈥淓venepoel鈥檚 arrival marks more than just a milestone for Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe, it is a clear signal,鈥 the team said. 鈥淲ith renewed confidence and bold ambition, the team is setting its course to become one of the most attractive forces on the international cycling stage in the years to come.鈥

Evenepoel hadn鈥檛 yet commented Tuesday, though he posted Red Bull鈥揃ORA鈥揾ansgrohe鈥檚 鈥淲elcome Remco!鈥 message on his Instagram account.

A year ago in Paris, Evenepoel become the first rider to sweep the road race and time trial at the Summer Games.

  • Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022
  • Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday

MONTREAL: Naomi Osaka powered into her first National Bank Open semifinal, beating No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Osaka advanced to face No. 16 seed Clara Tauson, who eliminated sixth-seeded Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4 in the first quarterfinal of the night.

Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022. She stepped away from tennis for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023.

The native of Japan is seeking her eighth career title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday. Mboko, who鈥檚 playing in her first main draw at the National Bank Open, will rise into the WTA鈥檚 top 50 after beginning the year outside the top 300.

The 18-year-old from Toronto has defeated five higher-ranked opponents en route to the semifinals, including top seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round.

Tauson dedicated her victory to her grandfather, Peter, during an on-court interview at IGA Stadium.

鈥淚 really wanted to win for him today,鈥 she told the crowd before breaking down in tears. 鈥淚 really wanted to come out here and show my best tennis for him, and hopefully he鈥檚 watching.鈥

Tauson said she only found out about her grandfather鈥檚 death on Monday, a day after she eliminated Wimbledon champion and No. 3-ranked Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3.

She spoke of him as one of the biggest supporters of her career.

鈥淗e used to coach me a little bit playing tennis and drove me to almost every single practice from my school,鈥 the 22-year-old native of Denmark said. 鈥淚t was tough news yesterday morning when I woke up, but I think it鈥檚 for the better. He was not feeling great for a while.鈥

Tauson hasn鈥檛 lost a set in the tournament.

Keys failed to convert two break chances in the first game. After the American held serve, Tauson won the ensuing five games to take the first set.

鈥淣ot my best performance out there today,鈥 said Keys, who won this year鈥檚 Australian Open. 鈥淪he played amazing tonight. She played incredibly well, she served really well. It was just one of those things where I felt like I kept trying different things, and she was just beating me.

鈥淲hen she鈥檚 serving like that, it鈥檚 going to be really hard to break her.鈥

Al-Hilal face ban from 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup
  • Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and was fined $133,000
  • The committee said the decision is subject to appeal

RIYADH: Holders Al-Hilal will be banned from the 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup if they qualify after withdrawing from this season鈥檚 four-team competition, the 黑料社区 Football Federation鈥檚 (SAFF) Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said on Tuesday.

The decision came after Al-Hilal pulled out of the Super Cup, scheduled to be played from August 19-23 in Hong Kong, citing player fatigue following their Club World Cup campaign. They lost 2-1 to Fluminense in the quarter-finals on July 4.

鈥淎l-Hilal refused to participate in the Saudi Super Cup for the 2025-2026 season after the official schedule for the competition was issued,鈥 the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said in a statement.

鈥淎s a result, the committee ruled that Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and fined the club 500,000 Saudi Riyals ($133,000) to be paid to the SAFF,鈥 the statement added.

In addition to the fine, the club was banned from participating in the 2026-27 Super Cup and stripped of any financial awards allocated for this season鈥檚 competition.

The committee said the decision is subject to appeal.

Al-Hilal have been asked for comment.

They won the Super Cup by beating Al-Nassr last season for a record-extending fifth title.

The Saudi Super Cup is contested by the winners and runners-up of the King鈥檚 Cup and Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal finished second in the 2024-25 Pro League behind Al-Ittihad.

Al-Hilal, who were due to face King鈥檚 Cup runners-up Al-Qadsiah in the Super Cup semifinals on August 20, have been replaced by AFC Champions League winners Al-Ahli.

Since Al-Ittihad won the Pro League and King鈥檚 Cup, the extra Super Cup spot was awarded to Al-Nassr 鈥 the third-placed team in the league 鈥 who they face in the semis on August 19.
