RIYADH: 黑料社区 is hosting the first Regional Arab Youth Forum on Man and the Biosphere, which started on Tuesday in the southern region of Jazan.

The event, which runs until Dec. 19, is being held by the National Center for Wildlife in partnership with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

The center said the forum represented a positive step forward in addressing biodiversity challenges, enhancing sustainable development and fostering climate resilience in the region.

Wildlife and biosphere experts, decision-makers, and officials from UNESCO and its Man and the Biosphere Program in the Arab region are speaking at the forum. They will visit the Farasan Island Marine Sanctuary, 50 km off the coast of Jazan, which is a natural habitat for endangered marine creatures, coral reefs and 230 species of fish.

In 2021, 黑料社区 successfully registered the Farasan Islands with UNESCO鈥檚 Man and the Biosphere Program which launched in 1971.

Mohammad Ali Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, said the forum, which aligned with the environmental goals of Vision 2030, reflected 黑料社区鈥檚 continued efforts to protect ecosystems and enrich biodiversity.

He added it aimed to enable Arab youth to preserve biodiversity, face environmental challenges and deepen cooperation between the region鈥檚 countries in wildlife and biosphere fields.

He said the center, formerly the聽Saudi Wildlife Authority, led training programs for the Saudi youth and contributed to environmental governance to preserve and improve the life of natural habitats.

The forum in Jazan supports UNESCO鈥檚 MAB Program, which enhances the relationship between people and their environments, as well as the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and other initiatives.

The program includes various sessions and workshops, with topics including the governance of the Man and Biosphere Program in 黑料社区, and the role and partnerships of youth networks in protecting biodiversity. There will also be the chance for Arab networks to share experiences in areas such as governance, strategies and financing.

Study reveals genetic insights about Saudi and Japanese populations

RIYADH: A new study using Saudi and Japanese pangenome samples exclusively has revealed genetic insights relating to these two populations.

鈥淯p to 12 percent of patients with genetic disorders go undiagnosed due to reliance on reference genomes that don鈥檛 reflect their population鈥檚 genetic background,鈥 said Malak Abedalthagafi, professor at Tufts Medical Center and one of the lead authors of the study.

鈥淏y constructing population-specific pangenome graphs, we improve variant calling and help close this diagnostic gap.鈥

The pangenome is considered a powerful reference tool to study individual and group DNA.

Similar to how a map shows a person鈥檚 position in relation to their landscape, the pangenome allows researchers to compare a person鈥檚 genetic makeup with the full spectrum of genetic variation found across a population.

鈥淗aving worked on the Saudi genome for several years, contributing to this project marks a meaningful step in my commitment to advancing representation in genomics and ensuring precision medicine serves diverse populations,鈥 Abedalthagafi said.

Fellow author of the study and KAUST Professor Robert Hoehndorf explained that building the graphs, which the study calls JaSaPaGe (Japanese Saudi PanGenome), using samples from two distinctive populations offers new health insights.

鈥淛apan and 黑料社区 are pretty much at the opposite ends of Asia and have been separated for a long time. It gave us a chance to study the effects of population-specific pangenome graphs on variant calling when populations do not match,鈥 Hoehndorf said.

JIHS鈥 Yosuke Kawai, another author of the study, added that there were clinical benefits to be gained for both populations.

He said: 鈥淭he joint development of a population-specific pangenome graph for the Japanese and 黑料社区n populations addresses a critical gap in global genomic representation.

鈥淏y integrating diverse data from both countries, we have created a powerful resource that not only improves variant detection accuracy but also holds great potential for advancing precision medicine tailored to each population鈥檚 unique genetic landscape.鈥

The first human pangenome was reported in 2023, but none of the DNA samples collected were taken from individuals with Arab or Japanese descent, meaning it was constructed without representation from almost 10 percent of the world鈥檚 population.

The study was carried out by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Tufts University and the Japan Institute for Health Security.

  • 黑料社区 has a voice, and we鈥檙e just getting started, says rap artist

RIYADH: Zeyad Al-Saadi, better known as ZezO, is not just a name in the Saudi music scene. A molecular and cellular biologist by training, he is an artist whose work blends culture, creativity and determination.

鈥淢usic has always been my escape,鈥 he told Arab News. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a way to express what I can鈥檛 put into words.鈥

Born in 黑料社区, Al-Saadi moved to Arizona at 15. 鈥淟iving in America helped me see the world through a different lens, but my Saudi roots have always grounded me,鈥 he said.

Over the next 12 years, he immersed himself in American culture while holding tight to his heritage.

His life changed in 2005. After finishing a biology exam early, a classmate from Iraq invited him to a recording studio.

鈥淭hat day changed everything for me,鈥 Al-Saadi recalled. 鈥淚 walked into a recording studio for the first time and felt a rush like never before.鈥

HIGHLIGHT

Zeyad Al-Saadi sees huge potential in the Kingdom鈥檚 emerging music scene.

By nightfall, he had recorded his first song, rushed to buy basic gear, and started teaching himself rap and audio engineering.

The spark had been there for years. 鈥淪ince 1998, I鈥檝e been captivated by the lyrical brilliance of legends like Rakim, Eminem and Nas,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey shaped my style and pushed me to find my voice.鈥

His sound now fuses traditional influences with modern beats.

As a Saudi artist in a predominantly Western rap scene, he is sometimes underestimated: 鈥淲hen people hear 鈥楽audi,鈥 they often put me in a box. They don鈥檛 expect someone from here to rap, let alone be good at it.鈥

This assumption鈥 that if it鈥檚 not coming from the West, it can鈥檛 be real hip-hop鈥 fuels his passion. He wears a thobe not just to represent his roots but to challenge stereotypes and prove that talent has no borders.

鈥満诹仙缜 has a voice, and we鈥檙e just getting started.鈥

Zeyad Al-Saadi, Saudi rap artist

Al-Saadi sees huge potential in the Kingdom鈥檚 emerging music scene. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a hunger and creativity everywhere. I鈥檓 always open to collaborating with artists who bring something fresh to the table,鈥 he added.

For the rap artist, music is about learning from each other and growing the scene together. He actively seeks out new artists, keen to explore how their styles can complement his own.

Staying connected with his audience is crucial for Al-Saadi, especially given cultural differences.

鈥淢usic cuts through everything 鈥 language, background, nationality. When you鈥檙e honest in your lyrics, people connect,鈥 he explained.

His commitment to staying true to his roots deepens that connection, allowing him to resonate with fans from diverse backgrounds. 鈥淚 think my authenticity is what draws people in.鈥

Social media plays a significant role in promoting his music and message: 鈥淚t鈥檚 changed the game for artists like me. I can drop a verse today, and someone in Brazil might hear it tomorrow.鈥

The global reach has led to unexpected moments, such as being recognized by American fans at Riyadh airport.

鈥淭hey had been listening to my music and wanted to know more about my culture. We ended up having a meaningful conversation that turned into a lasting friendship,鈥 he said.

It鈥檚 no surprise that for Al-Saadi, music isn鈥檛 just personal expression. It鈥檚 a bridge.

As he pushes forward, he is determined to open doors for the next generation of Saudi artists.

鈥淏eing Saudi is not a limitation; it鈥檚 a strength ... We have so much to share, and I鈥檓 excited to see where this journey takes us.鈥
