Why 黑料社区鈥檚 Farasan Islands are a haven for flamingos听
  • Thanks to conservation efforts, the Farasan Islands remain an important migratory waystation for the greater flamingo听
  • From habitat protection to anti-poaching measures, 黑料社区 is safeguarding the future of this beloved avian species

RIYADH: In the turquoise waters off 黑料社区鈥檚 Red Sea coast lies a hidden gem that is quickly gaining recognition as a sanctuary for one of the world鈥檚 most charismatic birds: The greater flamingo.

The Farasan Islands, an archipelago off the southwestern coast of 黑料社区, boast a biodiverse ecosystem that has attracted these elegant creatures for decades.

While the Kingdom is often associated with desert landscapes, the Farasan Islands present a stark contrast 鈥 a lush haven that plays host to thousands of migratory birds each year, including the iconic flamingo.

黑料社区, through its National Center for Wildlife, or NCW, has undertaken efforts to conserve and protect its greater flamingo population as part of a broader commitment to preserve its natural heritage and promote biodiversity in line with Vision 2030.

The NCW, in collaboration with local authorities, has implemented environmental regulations and established protected habitats to ensure the safety and sustainability of these migratory birds.

These include a ban on hunting and the designation of wetland areas as protected zones, and measures to prevent collisions with high-voltage power lines.

DID YOUKNOW?

鈥 Flamingos are social birds that live in large colonies often consisting of thousands of birds.

鈥 They have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years in the wild and even longer in captivity.

鈥 Flamingos have a distinctive courtship display that involves movements and vocalizations to attract potential mates.

These efforts are seen as crucial in maintaining the delicate balance of the Farasan Islands鈥 ecosystem, which supports not only flamingos but also a variety of other wildlife species.

The Farasan Islands are one of the largest island groups in the Red Sea, situated about 50 km off the coast of Jazan.

The archipelago consists of more than 170 islands, characterized by their coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds, which provide essential habitats for a diverse range of marine and terrestrial species.

Flamingos are attracted to the shallow, saline lagoons of the Farasan Islands, where they can feed on a diet rich in shrimp, algae and other small organisms. More than 4,000 flamingos have been observed there during the migration season.

鈥淭hey begin to appear along the coasts of the Kingdom and in the Farasan Islands at the start of winter, by the end of November, and continue until the end of winter,鈥 Mohammed Shobrak, a bird expert and adviser to the NCW, told Arab News.

鈥淭heir numbers vary during the migration season in the Farasan Islands. They are more commonly found along the coasts than in the islands.鈥澨

The islands offer a relatively safe haven for the flamingos, with minimal human disturbance and ample space for the birds to roost and forage.

The greater flamingo is the largest and most widespread species of flamingo, found across Africa, southern Europe and South Asia. These birds are known for their striking pink plumage, which they acquire from their diet.

鈥淭he substance responsible for this color is beta-carotene, which is found in algae and crustaceans,鈥 Shobrak said.

鈥淰ariations in the levels of this substance in food across different regions may cause color differences, and the physiology of the species may also contribute to these variations among flamingo birds that share the same types of food.

鈥淎dditionally, another behavioral study on groups in the Americas indicates that birds with brighter pink-orange colors tend to be more aggressive while feeding.鈥澨

黑料社区 condemns Netanyahu remarks on 鈥楪reater Israel vision鈥

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a press conference at the Prime Minister鈥檚 office in Jerusalem.

RIYADH: 黑料社区 on Wednesday strongly condemned statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the so-called 鈥淕reater Israel vision.鈥

In an interview with i24 News on Tuesday, Netanyahu said he is 鈥渧ery鈥 attached to the vision of a Greater Israel.

The term Greater Israel is understood to refer to a far-reaching expansionist vision that includes East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza, the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights being part of the country.

The Kingdom鈥檚 Foreign Ministry said it completely rejects the settlement and expansionist ideas and projects adopted by Israeli authorities.

It also affirmed the historical and legal right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent, sovereign state on their lands, based on relevant international laws.

鈥淭he Kingdom warns the international community against the Israeli occupation鈥檚 persistence in flagrant violations that undermine the foundations of international legitimacy, blatantly violate the sovereignty of states, and threaten regional and global security and peace,鈥 a statement from the ministry said.

The Israeli military said on Wednesday that it had approved the framework for a new offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The approved plan for the expanded offensive comes days after Israel鈥檚 security cabinet called for the capture of the Palestinian territory鈥檚 largest city following 22 months of war that have created dire humanitarian conditions.

World鈥檚 best: Riyadh hospital completes 10 kidney transplants in 48 hours
  • King Faisal Specialist Hospital sets record on World Organ Donation Day
  • Program 鈥榦pens door鈥 for patients without suitable donor, it says

RIYADH: The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre this week set a world record by performing 10 kidney exchange transplants in just 48 hours.

The achievement coincided with World Organ Donation Day, which falls on Aug. 13 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.

Dr. Ehab Abufarhaneh, deputy executive director of the hospital鈥檚 Organ Transplant Center of Excellence, told Arab News: 鈥淜FSHRC performed the kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days setting a global record. This happened with a great team led by Dr. Khaled Almashary and Dr.Tariq Ali of the department of kidney and pancreas transplant.

鈥淭his initiative opens a door for many patients who have no suitable donor.鈥

The KFSHRC said the record was for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center.

鈥淭his milestone reinforces the hospital鈥檚 position as a global leader in organ transplantation. It also reflects its high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams and the advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures,鈥 it said.

Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach where two or more incompatible donor-recipient pairs swap kidneys to achieve compatible transplants. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families.

Last year, the KFSHRC celebrated another milestone with the completion of its 500th transplant since the program was launched in 2011. Since the creation of its organ transplantation program in 1981, it has successfully performed more then 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers.

Last year it conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, more than any other facility in the world for the period.

By leveraging its skilled workforce, advanced technologies and the integration of research and clinical programs, the KFSHRC aims to deliver world-class treatment while enhancing the Kingdom鈥檚 position as a leader in organ transplantation.

In 2023 and 2024 it ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa region and 15th globally on the list of the world鈥檚 top 250 academic medical centers and was last year recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East by Brand Finance rankings.

It also ranked among the world鈥檚 250 best hospitals in 2024 and was included in Newsweek magazine鈥檚 list of best smart hospitals for 2025.

Study reveals genetic insights about Saudi and Japanese populations

RIYADH: A new study using Saudi and Japanese pangenome samples exclusively has revealed genetic insights relating to these two populations.

鈥淯p to 12 percent of patients with genetic disorders go undiagnosed due to reliance on reference genomes that don鈥檛 reflect their population鈥檚 genetic background,鈥 said Malak Abedalthagafi, professor at Tufts Medical Center and one of the lead authors of the study.

鈥淏y constructing population-specific pangenome graphs, we improve variant calling and help close this diagnostic gap.鈥

The pangenome is considered a powerful reference tool to study individual and group DNA.

Similar to how a map shows a person鈥檚 position in relation to their landscape, the pangenome allows researchers to compare a person鈥檚 genetic makeup with the full spectrum of genetic variation found across a population.

鈥淗aving worked on the Saudi genome for several years, contributing to this project marks a meaningful step in my commitment to advancing representation in genomics and ensuring precision medicine serves diverse populations,鈥 Abedalthagafi said.

Fellow author of the study and KAUST Professor Robert Hoehndorf explained that building the graphs, which the study calls JaSaPaGe (Japanese Saudi PanGenome), using samples from two distinctive populations offers new health insights.

鈥淛apan and 黑料社区 are pretty much at the opposite ends of Asia and have been separated for a long time. It gave us a chance to study the effects of population-specific pangenome graphs on variant calling when populations do not match,鈥 Hoehndorf said.

JIHS鈥 Yosuke Kawai, another author of the study, added that there were clinical benefits to be gained for both populations.

He said: 鈥淭he joint development of a population-specific pangenome graph for the Japanese and 黑料社区n populations addresses a critical gap in global genomic representation.

鈥淏y integrating diverse data from both countries, we have created a powerful resource that not only improves variant detection accuracy but also holds great potential for advancing precision medicine tailored to each population鈥檚 unique genetic landscape.鈥

The first human pangenome was reported in 2023, but none of the DNA samples collected were taken from individuals with Arab or Japanese descent, meaning it was constructed without representation from almost 10 percent of the world鈥檚 population.

The study was carried out by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Tufts University and the Japan Institute for Health Security.
