  • Superstar stresses importance of sport鈥檚 grassroots development

JEDDAH: French and Saudi Pro League superstar Karim Benzema expressed his confidence in 黑料社区鈥檚 readiness to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034 during a recent meeting with young players in Jeddah.

The 2022 Ballon d鈥橭r winner met trainees from the Saudi Football Federation鈥檚 regional training centers at the weekend and emphasized the importance of grassroots development in building a competitive footballing generation.

Benzema, who joined Al-Ittihad in 2023 as part of 黑料社区鈥檚 efforts to elevate its football scene, praised the country鈥檚 transformation and extended an open invitation to the people of the world to experience its culture.

He said: 鈥淚 advise you to visit 黑料社区. Anyone who has a preconceived idea should come for themselves. It is a wonderful country.鈥

The striker also paid tribute to the nation鈥檚 commitment to nurturing young footballing talent, saying: 鈥淪audi football is developing, and I am confident that after 10 years 黑料社区 will be fully prepared (for the World Cup).

鈥淭raining and development begin with the young players, and this is the most important thing 鈥 creating a generation that can reach the highest level.鈥

黑料社区 is the sole bidder for the 2034 World Cup and aims to become the second Middle Eastern country to host the tournament following the competition in Qatar in 2022.

The Kingdom has embarked on an ambitious sports development strategy under its Vision 2030 framework, investing heavily in domestic leagues, infrastructure, and youth programs.

The official announcement of the 2034 FIFA World Cup hosts is expected this month, with 黑料社区 poised to host the world鈥檚 biggest footballing event.

Zverev dumped out of Shanghai Masters by France鈥檚 Rinderknech
  • The German had injured his big toe toward the end of his last match in Shanghai but on Monday seemed to show no sign of discomfort as he broke Rinderknech in the third game with a forehand

SHANGHAI: World No. 3 Alexander Zverev was knocked out of the Shanghai Masters by France鈥檚 Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Monday, leaving Novak Djokovic as the tournament鈥檚 top-ranked player.

In stifling conditions, the 54th-ranked Frenchman came back from a set down to stun an increasingly rattled Zverev into submission.

The German had injured his big toe toward the end of his last match in Shanghai but on Monday seemed to show no sign of discomfort as he broke Rinderknech in the third game with a forehand.

He nearly went ahead early in the second set, but Rinderknech recovered his cool, piling on the pressure in the fourth game to eventually break.

鈥淚鈥檓 not very sure (how I managed to turn the game around),鈥 he said.

鈥淚 fought like hell, tried everything. (Zverev) is such a good player ... I knew it was going to be a battle.

鈥淪tarting in the second set ... I was able to be offensive at the right moment, in a smarter way,鈥 he said.

Keeping up the momentum, in the third set the 30-year-old broke in the third game.

Zverev had to pause to change his shoes because sweat was pouring out of them, as spectators wafted fans and wore cool packs on their foreheads to counter the suffocating humidity.

But switching footwear was not enough to save the German, and a double fault in the seventh game led to Rinderknech breaking again.

Holding with an ace to win, the Frenchman lolled his body in delighted disbelief, then danced around the court in glee.

Zverev鈥檚 exit means world No. 5 Djokovic, who is aiming for a record-extending fifth title in the Chinese financial hub, now leads rankings-wise as the tournament heads into the last 16.

On Sunday the competition lost both defending champion Jannik Sinner, who was forced to retire with extreme leg cramps, and 4th-ranked Taylor Fritz.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew at the last minute to rest.

Alex de Minaur is the next highest seed after Djokovic was through to the fourth round, comfortably getting past Poland鈥檚 Kamil Majchrzak 6-1, 7-5.

鈥淚 came into this week knowing how tough the conditions were going to be,鈥 the world number seven said.

鈥淪o the mindset ultimately is surviving, finding ways, and getting ready for battles every time you step out on the court.鈥

The Australian will next meet Portugal鈥檚 Nuno Borges, who put an end to the hopes of home favorite Shang Juncheng 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3.

  • Amin top-scored with 81 runs, but her half century was not enough to save Pakistan from an 88-run defeat
  • It was Pakistan鈥檚 second successive loss in the tournament after it lost the opening game against Bangladesh

COLOMBO: Pakistan batter Sidra Amin has been reprimanded for breaching the ICC's code of conduct during a Women鈥檚 Cricket World Cup match against archrival India on Sunday.

Amin top-scored with 81 runs, but her half century was not enough to save Pakistan from an 88-run defeat. It was Pakistan鈥檚 second successive loss in the tournament after it lost the opening game against Bangladesh by seven wickets.

The ICC said in a statement on Monday that Amin breached its article 2.2 related to 鈥渁buse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.鈥

Amin hit her bat forcefully onto the pitch after she was dismissed in the 40th over. She admitted her offense and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Shandre Fritz.

It was Amin鈥檚 first offense in two years and she was given one demerit point for a Level 1 breach.

Pakistan next takes on defending champion Australia in Colombo on Wednesday.

  • The event, taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Wednesday, will spotlight the region鈥檚 growing impact on motorsport and mobility

DUBAI: Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Federation Internationale de l鈥橝utomobile, will open the FIA Asia Pacific Congress in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Wednesday by spotlighting the region鈥檚 growing impact on motor sport and mobility.

The congress, hosted by the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, brings together motorsport and automotive mobility leaders from across Asia and the Pacific to discuss key initiatives in road safety, sustainable mobility, regional sporting growth, and innovation in transport.

Speaking ahead of the congress, Ben Sulayem said: 鈥淚 am delighted to be joining our members and partners in Chiang Mai for the FIA Asia Pacific Congress, and I look forward to building on the region鈥檚 impressive progress in both mobility and sport.

鈥淎sia and the Pacific are among the fastest growing areas of our federation, and the commitment shown by our members here is driving real impact, from safer roads and sustainable transport to new opportunities for grassroots and elite competition.

鈥淭his gathering is an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration across the region, share expertise in mobility and motorsport, and advance our shared priorities of safety, sustainability and innovation.鈥

The theme of this year鈥檚 FIA Asia Pacific Congress is 鈥淚nnovate. Integrate. Accelerate: Driving a sustainable future for mobility and sport,鈥 with the program designed to equip member clubs with new strategies and insights into evolving mobility and sporting trends.

This includes a focus on sustainable practices, affordable grassroots pathways, and the evolution of artificial intelligence and its role in the FIA鈥檚 sectors.

The event comes as motorsport and mobility innovation gather pace across the region. Sri Lanka recently hosted the Asia Pacific Motorsport Championship with 18 nations and 204 competitors, while Malaysia will stage the first FIA 鈥淎rrive and Drive鈥 Karting World Cup this November.

In 2026, Formula One returns to Australia, China, and Japan, alongside the World Rally Championship and World Endurance Championship in Japan and Formula E in Shanghai and Tokyo.

On the mobility side, the Safe Helmets for Asia Pacific Initiative recently held its first workshop in Manila, bringing together delegates from Cambodia, China, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to chart new roadmaps for safer helmets.

  • Hwang: This is my dream,鈥 Hwang said through an interpreter. 鈥淔inally, I achieved my dream here at the LOTTE Championship

HONOLULU: Youmin Hwang won the LOTTE Championship on Saturday for her first victory in an LPGA Tour event, making a big late charge to run the season-opening streak without a repeat winner to 25 tournaments.

A Korean LPGA member in the field on a sponsor invite, Hwang birdied the final four holes and five of the last six at breezy Hoakalei Country Club for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Hyo Joo Kim.

鈥淭his is my dream,鈥 Hwang said through an interpreter. 鈥淔inally, I achieved my dream here at the LOTTE Championship, and I also very much look forward to my future as well in the LPGA.鈥

As a nonmember of the LPGA Tour, the 22-year-old Hwang has the option to accept immediate membership or defer to next season. 鈥淚 would like to express my deepest gratitude for LOTTE for inviting me,鈥 Hwang said. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 all the more meaningful that I can play and also win the tournament sponsored by LOTTE, my sponsor as well.鈥

Tied for the lead with Kim and Minami Katsu after her birdie on the par-4 17th, Hwang got a break when Katsu and Kim each bogeyed the hole in the group behind. On the par-5 18th, Hwang hit her second shot through the green into rough and chipped to a foot.

Hwang finished at 17-under 271. She shot a career-best 62 on Thursday to open a three-stroke lead, then had a 75 on Friday to drop into a tie for second 鈥 a shot behind Akie Iwai.

Kim birdied the 18th for a 68.

Katsu was third at 15 under after a 69.

Second-ranked Nelly Korda closed with a 69 for finish three back at 17 under with Peiyun Chien (70), Jessica Porvasnik (70) and Iwai (71). Coming off a seven-victory season, Korda hasn鈥檛 won this year.

鈥淥verall, I鈥檓 putting myself into contention.鈥 Korda said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely an interesting year for me result-wise, but at the end of the day I鈥檓 giving it 100 percent, controlling what I can control and I鈥檓 happy with that.鈥

The LPGA Tour now heads to Asia for tournaments five straight weeks in Shanghai, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan.
