RIYADH: The Saudi capital is ending the year on a high as Riyadh Metro trains officially began running on Dec. 1.

Stations were buzzing with excitement across the blue, yellow, and purple lines as commuters celebrated the opening of a project which was 12 years in the making.聽

At the King Abdullah Financial District Station, which connects all three lines, Saudis, residents, and tourists spoke to Arab News about their eagerness to try out the city鈥檚 new mode of transportation.

Khalid Alohari, who was en route to visit his grandmother, told Arab News: 鈥淚 live in the north, near to the KAFD Station, and my grandma is in the far east, so going by car was always a hassle. Now the metro will make visiting her so much easier. The experience is just phenomenal. I鈥檝e been waiting for this.鈥

As a medical student at King Saud University, he was eligible for a 50 percent discount on all fares. He plans to use the metro system regularly to attend classes.

He added: 鈥淎 month (of) using public transport, the metro, the buses, the supplementary cars, for just SR70 ($18) for a student, it鈥檚 just something we didn鈥檛 imagine could happen. I have a station close to my home. I鈥檓 going to take it to the university, and use it for the commute.

鈥淎s a medical student, I can use the 30-40 minutes of the commute to study, and it will also have a positive impact on my grades. It鈥檚 a win-win for everyone basically.鈥

He said that the metro will play a crucial role in reducing the growing traffic problem in 黑料社区, while also making transportation a greener experience as the system runs primarily on electrical energy rather than oil combustion.

Tourists Greg and Emma Turra were visiting Riyadh from Australia. Unsure how to spend their last day in the city, they decided to hop on the train to see where it took them. They were surprised to learn that the special day was the first they could have accessed the mass transit system.

Greg told Arab News: 鈥淲e were just looking at a bit of time to waste on our last six hours, and what better way than doing this? It鈥檚 not every day you ride a train on its opening day.鈥

They started their journey from Alinma Bank Station on the blue line and made it to KAFD.

Emma said: 鈥淭he first thing we saw was that it was brand new, modern, futuristic, and the architectural brilliance of it, really, is quite special.

鈥淓veryone was so excited to be traveling on it 鈥 we couldn鈥檛 believe that. That鈥檚 how we realized that it was obviously the first day.鈥

She added that the system could be an attraction for tourists as the city鈥檚 traffic has been a well-known problem for tourists.

She added: 鈥淏efore I came to Riyadh I was told the traffic was a nightmare. And when we arrived, we took close to two hours to get to our hotel. This line goes to the airport so that might be another option for people.鈥

Ameera Alrumaih, a student at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, told Arab News: 鈥淚've been thinking about this project for forever.

鈥淚鈥檝e been seeing it being built near our house. Every outing we have, I always see the metro. I鈥檝e been excited for forever to try it.鈥

Alrumaih and her friend hopped on the train from the university to grab breakfast at KAFD, and headed back to continue their classes.

Alrumaih said: 鈥淲e traveled from our university to KAFD in less than 10 minutes, which is so much easier, especially for me. I think I would use it. I live in the east so from east to east I鈥檒l still use my car, but from east to north I think I鈥檒l use the metro.

鈥淚鈥檝e tried the metro in Istanbul and London. I think (in Riyadh) it is much clearer, much nicer and well-lit.鈥

Osama Alharbi.聽(AN photo by Jaafer Alsaleh)

Commuter Osama Alharbi arrived at KAFD Station from Khurais Road with a sense of pride, and said: 鈥淚t was so easy to come here. It鈥檚 around 15 or 20 minutes around this time but if you take a car from my house to KAFD, maybe an hour.

鈥淲hen I came to the train station the support was so amazing. The (station managers and assistants) came up to the door to bring me to the ticket (machine) and tell me about the prices.鈥

The only issue he noted was that there was no clear direction between the standard and first-class sections so travelers could easily hop in any of the cars.

  • Over 15,000 beekeepers in the Kingdom now use modern hives, transforming honey into a major economic and export sector
  • Government support, organic certification, and participation in exhibitions have helped scale production for international markets

JEDDAH: 黑料社区鈥檚 honey sector is experiencing a quiet revolution, one that blends centuries-old beekeeping traditions with the precision of modern sustainable agriculture.

Once an overlooked element of rural life, honey production in the Kingdom is now gaining global recognition, fueled by organic certification, government support and the determination of pioneering beekeepers.

Among the leading figures shaping this transformation is Jassim Almughrabi, 黑料社区鈥檚 first certified organic honey producer and owner of Mughrabi Apiaries.

With decades of experience, including his tenure as a honeybee specialist at the Ministry of Agriculture, Almughrabi discussed with Arab News the profound shift that has taken place in recent years.

鈥淎fter the government showed strong interest in organic agriculture, things became much more comfortable for us,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 had already registered as an organic honey producer, but when the Ministry of Agriculture started giving support and donations to beekeepers who wanted to convert from conventional to organic, our production improved significantly.鈥

This institutional backing has allowed local beekeepers to grow their operations and expand into new markets.

Almughrabi highlighted how the ministry not only facilitated certifications but also opened doors for beekeepers to participate in national exhibitions like BIOFACH 黑料社区, a major event now held annually in Riyadh.

鈥淭hrough the Organic Cooperative Society, we are even allowed to participate free of charge,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he government really helped us spread our presence in the field, and we thank them for that.鈥

At the heart of 黑料社区鈥檚 beekeeping heritage lies a deep knowledge of traditional methods, especially in the mountainous regions of Makkah, Madinah, Abha, Al-Baha and Taif.

For centuries, beekeepers in these areas used hollowed logs to house bees, drawing from nature to sustain their practices. While this form of beekeeping still holds cultural value, a shift began around 45 years ago when the ministry encouraged farmers to adopt modern beehive systems.

鈥淚 was working in the Ministry of Agriculture back then,鈥 said Almughrabi. 鈥淲e conducted training courses to help traditional beekeepers transition to modern methods, like the Langstroth hive used in Europe and America. Now, more than 15,000 beekeepers across the Kingdom have adopted these techniques.鈥

This has transformed the industry, making Saudi honey a highly sought-after commodity.

Mansour Al-Mgaslah, beekeeper and supervisor of the Mangrove Honey Production Initiative said: 鈥淭he honey sector in the Kingdom has witnessed a remarkable transformation in recent years, driven by a growing awareness of the importance of sustainable beekeeping practices.

鈥淏eekeepers are now committing to environmental and health standards and adopting modern technologies to preserve the health of both bees and plants.鈥

This transition is not without its challenges. Desertification, pesticide use, and climate change are pressing environmental issues that threaten both bee populations and floral diversity.

However, both Almughrabi and Al-Mgaslah believe sustainable beekeeping offers practical solutions. By encouraging vegetation restoration and reducing chemical dependencies, beekeepers can help preserve ecosystems that bees and honey production rely on.

鈥淪ome of the major challenges include the shrinking of natural pastures and increasing desertification,鈥 said Al-Mgaslah. 鈥淪ustainable beekeeping helps restore ecological balance by preserving bees as sensitive and effective environmental indicators.鈥

Al-Mgaslah shared the sentiment.

鈥淏iodiversity is not just an environmental value. It is essential for ensuring the continuity of high-quality honey production,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ative plants such as sidr, samar, talh and mangrove provide bees with rich and pure nectar sources. Supporting this biodiversity contributes to building a more resilient and stable ecosystem.鈥

Almughrabi says government schemes have already begun to yield results. 鈥淲hen Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched the Saudi Green Initiative, valleys were protected from overgrazing and greenery started returning,鈥 he said.

鈥淭his led to a noticeable increase in honey production. Ten years ago, we produced less than 1 kilogram of honey per hive. Now, we sometimes get 1.5 to 2 kilograms.鈥

The role of native bees and local flora in this equation cannot be overstated. Indigenous bee species, such as the Arabian honeybee, have shown better resilience and adaptability to the Kingdom鈥檚 varied climate.

黑料社区鈥檚 honey industry is proving that sustainability, tradition, and innovation can work in harmony. (Supplied)

In contrast, imported bees often struggle to survive beyond one or two harvest cycles.

鈥淚n the middle of 黑料社区, beekeepers often use imported bees,鈥 said Almughrabi. 鈥淏ut they aren鈥檛 as strong. Local bees are very good, very strong, and after the harvest we can even transport them to other regions like Jazan or Al-Lith, where the climate is warmer in winter. We don鈥檛 have to buy new bees every year.鈥

The cornerstone of 黑料社区鈥檚 sustainable honey movement is its organic certification system, monitored by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The process is rigorous and includes criteria such as pesticide-free pastures, natural nutrition without antibiotics or sugar, and complete traceability from hive to shelf.

With an organic certification system in place, 黑料社区's honey industry is poised to export to the world market. (Supplied)

鈥淭o be certified organic in the Kingdom means that your honey is free from any chemical or industrial interventions at every stage,鈥 said Al-Mgaslah. 鈥淏eekeepers must meet strict environmental and documentation standards, and the certification is granted only through authorized, ministry-recognized bodies.鈥

With international demand for clean, traceable, and eco-conscious products on the rise, both experts believe 黑料社区 is poised for a golden era in honey exports.

鈥淭he Kingdom holds an exceptional opportunity to become a global leader in organic honey production,鈥 said Al-Mgaslah.

鈥淭hanks to its unique botanical diversity, rich heritage, and government support, Saudi honey can meet the growing global demand for authentic, natural products.鈥

Almughrabi added: 鈥淲e believe the future of Saudi honey lies in expanding exports and entering niche markets that value quality and authenticity. With continued support, we can make Saudi honey a global name.鈥

In a land long associated with arid deserts, 黑料社区鈥檚 honey industry is proving that sustainability, tradition, and innovation can work in harmony. The result is more than just honey 鈥 it is a model for agricultural resilience and cultural pride.

  • Originally scheduled for June 17-20, the event was postponed after Israel launched its 12-day war against Iran on June 13
  • The aim of the conference, rescheduled for July 28-29, is the urgent adoption of concrete measures leading to implementation of a 2-state solution

NEW YORK: An international conference organized and co-chaired by 黑料社区 and France to discuss Palestinian statehood that was postponed last month has been rescheduled for later this month.

鈥淭he two-state solution ministerial conference will resume on July 28 and 29; details will be shared shortly,鈥 diplomats confirmed to Arab News on Friday.

Originally scheduled for June 17-20, the event, officially titled the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, was postponed after Israel launched its 12-day military operation against Iran on June 13.

The event, convened by the UN General Assembly, will take place at the UN headquarters in New York. The aim is the urgent adoption of concrete measures that will lead to the implementation of a two-state solution and end decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

At the time of the postponement last month, French President Emmanuel Macron said the conference was being put back for logistical and security reasons but insisted it would be held 鈥渁s soon as possible.鈥

The delay did not 鈥渃all into question our determination to move forward with the implementation of the two-state solution,鈥 he added

Macron is expected to officially announce French recognition of a Palestinian state during the event. This week, he urged UK authorities to do the same.

Palestine is officially recognized by 147 of the UN鈥檚 193 member states. It holds observer status within the organization but is denied full membership.

Speaking during a preparatory UN meeting in May, Manal Radwan, a counselor at the Saudi Foreign Ministry, said the conference comes at a moment of 鈥渉istoric urgency鈥 in which Gaza was 鈥渆nduring unimaginable suffering.鈥

She said 黑料社区 was honored to stand with the other nations committed to diplomatic efforts to bring 鈥渞eal, irreversible and transformative change, to ensure, once and for all, the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine.鈥
