  • The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in a statement that Esteghlal had to move its home fixture with Al-Nassr to Dubai due to security reasons

DUBAI: Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr鈥檚 AFC Champions League Elite game with Esteghlal of Tehran on Tuesday will be as closely watched in India as it is in 黑料社区 and Iran.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in a statement released last Tuesday that Esteghlal had to move its home fixture with Al-Nassr to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai due to the security situation in Iran.
The decision was greeted by surprise in India as, on Oct. 7, the AFC ruled that Mohun Bagan Super Giants of Kolkata had been 鈥渃onsidered to have withdrawn鈥 from the second tier AFC Champions League Two for refusing to travel to Iran to play its Oct. 2 fixture against Tractor SC in the northwestern city of Tabriz.
It is not only Al-Nassr鈥檚 game that has been relocated. Tractor鈥檚 home game against Ravshan of Tajikistan, scheduled for Wednesday, has been switched to become an away tie. Iran鈥檚 national team also had to move its Oct. 15 World Cup qualifier against Qatar to Dubai.
鈥...(Mohun Bagan) notes that the AFC has indeed recognized the volatility of the situation in Iran and as such, has rescheduled or shifted venues for several games,鈥 a spokesperson for Mohun Bagan told Associated Press, adding that the confederation had taken the same geopolitical instability into account that the club had. 鈥淔ailing to apply the same standard to Mohun Bagan would result in unequal treatment by the AFC.鈥
According to the spokesperson, Mohun Bagan had made a request to the AFC that the game鈥檚 date or venue be changed before it decided not to travel.
鈥淲e consistently communicated concerns about the volatile and unsafe conditions in and around Iran, particularly regarding the safety of players and staff,鈥 the official added.
The Indian Super League club said that it had appealed the decision to the relevant AFC committee and hoped to be reinstated into the tournament.
The AFC did not reply to an invitation to comment.
Al-Nassr has four points from the first two games and can take a big step toward the second round with a win. The revamped tournament now consists of two groups of 12 鈥 divided into west and east geographic zones 鈥 with the top eight from each advancing to the Round of 16.
Nassr is going well in the Saudi Pro League with a 97th minute penalty from Ronaldo giving the team a 2-1 win over Al-Shabab on Friday to stay in third place.
鈥淭here are a lot of games at the moment and it is not easy,鈥 said Stefano Pioli, Al-Nassr鈥檚 coach. 鈥淲e will do our best to maintain our performances in the Asian Champions League.鈥
黑料社区 has three of the four top teams in Group A. Al-Hilal is first and the four-time winner meets defending champion Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates and could welcome Neymar back to action after a year out through injury. Jeddah club Al-Ahli also has maximum points and travels to Qatar to face Al-Rayyan.
Front runners meet in Eastern Zone
In the eastern zone the top two meet. Gwangju FC of South Korea is making its first ever appearance in Asian competition and is the only team with two wins from two. It takes on Johor Darul Ta鈥檢im of Malaysia.
Australia鈥檚 Central Coast Mariners has lost both games so far and head to China to take on Shanghai Port, coached by former Australian international Kevin Muscat, also seeking a first win.
Last season鈥檚 defeated finalist Yokohama F. Marinos also travels to China and meets Shandong Tiashan while three-time winner Pohang Steelers of South Korea faces Thailand鈥檚 Buriram United.

Al Hilal face ban from 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup
Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and was fined $133,000
The committee said the decision is subject to appeal

RIYADH: Holders Al-Hilal will be banned from the 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup if they qualify after withdrawing from this season鈥檚 four-team competition, the 黑料社区 Football Federation鈥檚 (SAFF) Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said on Tuesday.

The decision came after Al-Hilal pulled out of the Super Cup, scheduled to be played from August 19-23 in Hong Kong, citing player fatigue following their Club World Cup campaign. They lost 2-1 to Fluminense in the quarter-finals on July 4.

鈥淎l-Hilal refused to participate in the Saudi Super Cup for the 2025-2026 season after the official schedule for the competition was issued,鈥 the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said in a statement.

鈥淎s a result, the committee ruled that Al-Hilal had violated Article (59-3) of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations and fined the club 500,000 Saudi Riyals ($133,000) to be paid to the SAFF,鈥 the statement added.

In addition to the fine, the club was banned from participating in the 2026-27 Super Cup and stripped of any financial awards allocated for this season鈥檚 competition.

The committee said the decision is subject to appeal.

Al-Hilal have been asked for comment.

They won the Super Cup by beating Al-Nassr last season for a record-extending fifth title.

The Saudi Super Cup is contested by the winners and runners-up of the King鈥檚 Cup and Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal finished second in the 2024-25 Pro League behind Al-Ittihad.

Al-Hilal, who were due to face King鈥檚 Cup runners-up Al-Qadsiah in the Super Cup semifinals on August 20, have been replaced by AFC Champions League winners Al-Ahli.

Since Al-Ittihad won the Pro League and King鈥檚 Cup, the extra Super Cup spot was awarded to Al-Nassr 鈥 the third-placed team in the league 鈥 who they face in the semis on August 19.

England face searching Ashes questions after India series thriller

England face searching Ashes questions after India series thriller

LONDON: England suffered an agonizing six-run loss to India at the Oval on Monday as one of the most dramatic Test series of recent times ended in a 2-2 draw.
Their next major red-ball assignment is a five-match Ashes series away to arch-rivals Australia 鈥 where England have gone 15 Tests without a win 鈥 starting in November.
Here are some of the key issues that emerged from England鈥檚 rollercoaster contest with India and what they mean for their quest to regain the Ashes 鈥淒own Under.鈥
What England gain from having Ben Stokes in their side was never more evident than when their inspirational captain missed the fifth Test with a shoulder injury 鈥 a fresh worry following his history of hamstring trouble.
The 34-year-old all-rounder was the most threatening member of England鈥檚 attack against India, taking 17 wickets at 25 in 140 overs 鈥 the most he has bowled in a series.
Stokes also looked back to his best with the bat, scoring 141 in England鈥檚 mammoth total of 669 in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. By contrast specialist opener Zak Crawley failed to reach three figures in nine innings.
And at the Oval, the sight of vice-captain Ollie Pope running off to the dressing room to receive what appeared to be tactical guidance from Stokes did not say much for England鈥檚 depth of leadership.
England limited-overs captain Harry Brook, also a mainstay of the Test team and a lively skipper in the Stokes mold, could yet prove a better fit as vice-captain against Australia.
England have long believed a battery of genuinely fast bowlers is essential if they are to win an Ashes series in Australia for the first time since 2010/11.
But fitness issues could blight their best-laid plans.
Jofra Archer made an encouraging return to Test cricket against India but played just two matches as England looked to manage the express paceman鈥檚 workload.
Mark Wood, another bowler with genuine pace, has not played Test cricket for nearly 12 months and had knee surgery earlier this year.
The inconsistent Josh Tongue鈥檚 return of 19 wickets at under 30 in the India series could well see him selected for Ashes duty, with Gus Atkinson鈥檚 five-wicket haul on his return to Test duty at the Oval doing his cause no harm.
England, and Stokes in particular, have shown huge faith in Shoaib Bashir, a 21-year-old off-spinner unable to hold down a regular place in a county side but who has now taken 68 wickets in 19 Tests at 39.
In the India series, Bashir鈥檚 10 wickets came at an expensive average of 54.1, before a finger injury ruled him out of the last two Tests.
But Hampshire stalwart Liam Dawson failed to seize his chance in the drawn fourth Test, with Stokes appearing to tell the left-armer where he should be bowling on the Old Trafford pitch.
Leicestershire鈥檚 20-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, already England鈥檚 youngest Test cricketer, is another option.
England, however, didn鈥檛 bother with a specialist spinner at the Oval, deploying Joe Root and Jacob Bethell 鈥 clean bowled following a reckless charge down the pitch during a second-innings collapse 鈥 for a mere 11 overs combined.
But former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes England should stick with Bashir for the Ashes because of his similarity to outstanding Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
鈥淎ustralia will have probably three or four left-handers in their line-up which will aid the right-arm off-spinner as well,鈥 Ponting told Sky Sports. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 the over-spin that you need in Australia.鈥

  • The club said in their announcement that Costa embodied Porto鈥檚 values

PORTO: Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53.

Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto鈥檚 director of football at the time of his death.

The club said in their announcement that Costa embodied Porto鈥檚 values: 鈥渄edication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest.鈥

Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club鈥檚 training center and was transported to S茫o Jo茫o Hospital.

Costa鈥檚 finest achievement in his playing career was as captain of Jose Mourinho鈥檚 Porto team that was a surprise winner of the Champions League in 2004. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup.

Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles.

He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season.

鈥淭o hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he鈥檚 a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,鈥 said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton鈥檚 ex-players鈥 association.

鈥淗e was loved at Charlton, a man mountain of a player and a great guy too.鈥

  • Three minutes later Sofiane Bayazid put the result beyond doubt

NAIROBI: Algeria thumped Uganda 3-0 in their opening African Nations Championships (CHAN) Group C match in Kampala on Monday.

Uganda鈥檚 defeat means it is the only co-hosting nation to lose their CHAN opening match following twin victories for Tanzania and Kenya over the weekend.

Ayoub Ghezala rose high to head in an Abderrahmane Meziane cross at the near post for the Desert Foxes before the break.

Man of the match Meziane was on target himself on 76 minutes with a superb left-footed curler from the edge of the box.

Three minutes later Sofiane Bayazid put the result beyond doubt after a one-two combination
with left-back Naoufel Khacef.

Uganda were left ruing two missed chances when Joel Ssrunjogi and Patrick Kakande鈥檚 long range efforts were thwarted by Algerian keeper Zakaria Boulhalfaya.

Uganda next meet Guinea who got their campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Niger in a tie that required frequent use of video assistant referee (VAR).

Teenage striker Mohammed Bangoura atoned for an early miss with the only goal two minutes into the second half which was confirmed after a VAR review, having initially been ruled offside.

Son, 33, announced over the weekend that he planned to leave Tottenham, saying he achieved everything that he could with the North London club and he was interested in a new challenge.
