  • Lack of historical resources means that there is some debate over which club is officially the oldest in the nation

RIYADH: Football is such an integral part of culture in the Kingdom that the history of the game in the country dates back to the era before the formation of the modern Saudi state.

However, a lack of historical resources means that there is some debate over which club is officially the oldest in the nation.

Al-Wehda in Makkah is one that claims to be the first. Though the club acknowledges it was officially registered in its current form in 1946, its official website quotes historian Mohammed Ghazali as saying it was originally founded under the name Al-Hizb in 1916.

Jeddah side Al-Ittihad believes it is the Kingdom鈥檚 oldest club, however, with an official founding date of Dec. 26, 1927, almost five years before the unification in September 1932 that created the modern Saudi state.

Given such uncertainty about the exact origins of the game in the country, in 2023 the 黑料社区n Football Federation launched the Saudi Football History Documentation Project.

Saudi historians and international experts nominated by FIFA are working to research and record a definitive, agreed-upon history of football in the Kingdom.

The committee announced on Sept. 16 the completion of the first phase of the project, finding that the national team played a total of 92 matches and the clubs played more than 7,000 matches between 1902 and 1982.聽 聽

But much of 黑料社区鈥檚 footballing history is clear.

Al-Ahli club, for example, is another one of the Kingdom鈥檚 oldest clubs, having been founded in 1937. Other early organizations include Al-Ettifaq (1945), Al-Shabab (1947), Al-Riyadh (1953), Al-Nassr (1955), and Al-Hilal (1957).

The SAFF was established in 1956 as the governing body for the sport in the country. That same year, the Kingdom gained international football recognition when it joined FIFA, allowing local teams to participate in global competitions.

In 1957, the Kingdom鈥檚 national team played its first competitive international match, a game against Lebanon in Beirut that ended in a 1-1 draw.

While there have been domestic national leagues in 黑料社区 since the 1970s, the Saudi Pro League was not established in its current form until 2008.

In 1984, the Saudi national team won the AFC Asian Cup for the first time, with Majed Abdullah and Shaye Al-Nafisah claiming the goals in a 2-0 win over China in the final. The Kingdom retained the trophy four years later.

黑料社区 made their debut at the FIFA World Cup in 1994, which was held in the US, and reached the round of 16. Their success continued when they were once again crowned Asian Cup champions in 1996.

In more recent years, the Kingdom has continued to make strides in football, including the introduction of the first domestic women鈥檚 league in 2020, followed by the SAFF Women鈥檚 Cup in 2023.

Fuad Anwar is a former member of the Saudi national team who began his career in 1991 with Al-Shabab. He is perhaps best remembered for his performances during the 1994 World Cup, in which he scored two goals that helped the Saudis qualify for the knock-out stage. He also participated at the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup with Al-Nassr.

He told Arab News that three football clubs in particular shaped the football scene in the Kingdom.

鈥淭here was a cultural shift in sports because of Al-Ahli, Al-Ittihad and Al-Wehda,鈥 Anwar said. 鈥淭he world became more accepting of 黑料社区 and the region to be a part of the football scene 鈥 football culture became relevant in every part of the country, from Riyadh and beyond.鈥

Anwar highlighted in particular the efforts of Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal, and Prince Faisal bin Fahad to create a successful foundation for sports culture in the Kingdom.

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal played an instrumental role in the development of football in the region, having come up with the idea of launching a tournament for the Arabian Gulf in the late 1960s. Prince Abdullah, meanwhile, served as co-founder and chairperson of Al-Ahli, and Prince Faisal held a number of positions with domestic and regional sporting organizations.

Ahmed Eid Al-Harbi, a former Al-Ahli player who now chairs the SAFF鈥檚 board of directors, highlighted Prince Abdullah鈥檚 significant role in the development of Saudi football and sport in general.

He told Arab News the prince devoted much of his time to the development of youth to benefit the future of sport not only in the Kingdom but in the wider Gulf and Arab world, and on the continental and international stages.

鈥淗e didn鈥檛 merely adopt the club (Al-Ahli) for the sake of exercising a sport or achieving trophies, he spoke of the club as a university established to nurture and spotlight sports talents, giving them the attention and care they deserve,鈥 said Anwar.

Nader Al-Sahleh, 61, a Saudi from the Eastern Province, told Arab News that he has witnessed the evolution of football in the Kingdom through the years, all the way back to the 1970s when, as a child, he played the game with neighbors and schoolmates in parks and fields.

鈥淭hose were beautiful, irreplaceable days filled with challenges, such as participating in neighborhood football leagues and Ramadan tournaments,鈥 he said.

鈥淭hese experiences impacted my life, introduced me to friends I still cherish today and created wonderful memories that I wish could return.鈥

Football in the Kingdom has evolve tremendously over the years, Al-Sahleh said, and 鈥渁s a result, Saudi teams now compete to win, as seen in our victories in the Asian Cup and our dominance in Asian football.鈥

He added: 鈥淐rown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has stated his ambition to make the Saudi League one of the top 10 leagues in the world, which is a testament to the development of Saudi football.

鈥淐urrently, 黑料社区 is constructing massive stadiums to host the Asian Cup and even the FIFA World Cup. This is just a brief overview of the progress of Saudi football, and we are grateful to our government, led by the (king) and the crown prince, for their continued support. May our sports continue to advance and prosper.鈥

What pilgrims are sharing online after their Hajj journey
  • Worshippers take to social media to share profound experiences with loved ones
  • Posting online becomes a way to process the weight of Hajj for many

RIYADH: For many pilgrims, the spiritual journey of Hajj does not end when they leave the holy sites. It continues 鈥 quietly, intentionally 鈥 in the days and weeks that follow.

Across 黑料社区, young pilgrims are using social media to process the weight of Hajj and share the experience with loved ones.

Noor Ahmad, 21, did not plan to post during her pilgrimage. But after she returned, the urge to share came naturally.

After returning from Hajj, I decided to share a few captured moments. But how can a photo truly capture the depth and majesty of the experience?

Noor Ahmad

鈥淎fter returning from Hajj, I decided to share a few captured moments,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut how can a photo truly capture the depth and majesty of the experience?鈥

She described how people responded in varied ways. 鈥淭hose who had gone before felt nostalgic and started sharing their own stories. Others 鈥 those who hadn鈥檛 been yet 鈥 expressed their longing. It became this moment of connection.鈥

For Noor, the decision to post was not about aesthetics. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a monumental event. Maybe I could inspire someone who鈥檚 hesitant to go. Maybe they鈥檒l see what I saw 鈥 and want to experience it for themselves.

鈥淚t was my way of saying thank you鈥

Shatha Al-Jadaan, 25, took a different approach to sharing, after taking a digital detox.

I enjoy sharing meaningful moments, and after seeing the tremendous effort put into Hajj on every level, I felt my post was a small, sincere gesture of appreciation.

Shatha Al-Jadaan

鈥淒uring Hajj, I decided to partially fast from social media. I used only the essentials,鈥 she said. 鈥淎fter I returned, I posted a thread to my close friends explaining where I鈥檇 been and shared some of the most meaningful moments.鈥

The response was full of prayers and warmth. 鈥淧eople were kind, supportive, and curious. But what mattered most to me was that I used the thread to say thank you 鈥 to the organizers, to the volunteers, and to Allah.鈥

She spoke about how she found value in using digital platforms to document something greater than herself.

鈥淚 enjoy sharing meaningful moments, and after seeing the tremendous effort put into Hajj on every level, I felt my post was a small, sincere gesture of appreciation.鈥

Salem Al-Khudair, 28, recorded a voice note to his family group chat while performing the rites.

鈥淚 just couldn鈥檛 find the words to write. So I recorded myself speaking right after standing in Arafat. I sent it to my family WhatsApp group. My mom was emotional. My dad said, 鈥楳ay God accept from you.鈥 That was enough.鈥

In an age of curated content, Hajj posts tend to stand out for their sincerity. Pilgrims often strip away the filters, metaphors and trend-driven formats, and just speak from the heart.

Noura Al-Dosari, 23, uploaded a private Instagram story highlight with no captions. 鈥淛ust visuals. No filters. No hashtags,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 for followers. It was for me. For reflection. A digital bookmark of who I became.鈥

Some write long captions, others simply post a photo of their ihram folded neatly back into a drawer.

But all of them carry a silent message: I went. I came back different.

Many pilgrims use their posts to recall moments of physical hardship that brought emotional breakthroughs 鈥 the heat, the long walks, the brief but powerful connections with strangers.

Others use it to highlight the seamless organization of the pilgrimage as a reminder of how far the experience has evolved.

Amani Al-Saad, 26, used X to share a short story about a volunteer who helped her carry her bag in Muzdalifah. 鈥淪he didn鈥檛 speak much, but she smiled at me and said, 鈥楾his is what we鈥檙e here for.鈥 That stuck with me. I wrote about it as a reminder to myself 鈥 that sometimes the smallest moments hold the most meaning.鈥

While digital connections are increasingly common, most pilgrims emphasize that the real processing happens offline 鈥 in quiet conversations with family, in their prayer rooms, or on long drives home.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 post to perform,鈥 said Al-Jadaan. 鈥淚 posted to remember.鈥
