Desertification is a major environmental issue that affects 黑料社区 and many other countries worldwide, leaving billions of people at risk of food insecurity and the loss of livelihoods as a result of soil degradation.

In response to these major challenges, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification aims to unite countries and organizations to develop effective measures to combat the problem, with 黑料社区 taking the lead.

The 16th session of the Conference of the Parties 鈥 COP16 鈥 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification will take place in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from Dec. 2 to 13, coinciding with the convention鈥檚 30th anniversary.

黑料社区鈥檚 Vision 2030 bears the Kingdom鈥檚 environmental goals. Part of this is the Saudi Green Initiative 鈥 a blueprint for addressing desertification through afforestation, reforestation, and sustainable agriculture.

The UNCCD has adopted a resolution calling on the international community to enhance efforts to halt and reverse land degradation by sharing information, finances, experience, and technology to help restore affected areas and stop further damage.

黑料社区 provided valuable recommendations to the conference and unveiled several steps it intends to take to enhance land reclamation. It also promised to contribute a large amount of money to fight desertification globally.

Desertification is a global environmental challenge that requires sustained global efforts to protect vulnerable ecosystems, food security, lives, and livelihoods.

The Kingdom has enlisted the support of several countries, nongovernmental organizations, and international bodies to share expertise. For instance, 黑料社区 is working with African and Asian nations to transfer its knowledge of afforestation processes.

In doing so, it effectively addresses factors that contribute to desertification, such as poor farming practices. It has also developed sustainable solutions for various regions and climatic conditions.

黑料社区鈥檚 leadership at the UNCCD has set a strong example for other countries in the Middle East and around the world. Its aggressive policymaking and concern for the environment have inspired others to enact solutions.

The large-scale implementation of environmental projects faces many limitations, including a lack of funding and political barriers. However, the UNCCD has resolved that these challenges can be overcome through cooperation, greater investment in research, technology, and knowledge transfer.

Desertification is a global environmental challenge that requires sustained global efforts to protect vulnerable ecosystems, food security, lives, and livelihoods. Countries, stakeholders, and policymakers should commit to continued collaboration to strengthen these initiatives.

Crew abandons Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned ship attacked in the Red Sea, UK military says
  • The ship was first targeted by gunfire and self-propelled grenades launched from eight small boats, with armed security on the ship returning fire, UKMTO said

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Crew members aboard a Liberian-flagged ship set ablaze by a series of attacks in the Red Sea abandoned the vessel Sunday night as it took on water, marking the first serious assault in the vital corridor for trade after a monthslong campaign by Yemen鈥檚 Houthi rebels there.
Suspicion for the attack on the Greek-owned bulk carrier Magic Seas immediately fell on the Houthis, particularly as a security firm said it appeared bomb-carrying drone boats hit the ship after it was targeted by small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. The rebels鈥 media reported on the attack but did not claim it. It can take them hours or even days before they acknowledge an assault.
A renewed Houthi campaign against shipping could again draw in US and Western forces to the area, particularly after President Donald Trump targeted the rebels in a major airstrike campaign.
Shortly before midnight in Yemen, Israel鈥檚 military issued a warning for three Houthi-held ports and said airstrikes would begin shortly in Hodeidah, Ras Isa and Salif along with at the Ras Al-Khatib power station.
Attack comes at a delicate time
The ship attack comes at a sensitive moment in the Middle East, as a possible ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war hangs in the balance and as Iran weighs whether to restart negotiations over its nuclear program following American airstrikes targeting its most-sensitive atomic sites amid an Israeli war against the Islamic Republic.
鈥淚t likely serves as a message that the Houthis continue to possess the capability and willingness to strike at strategic maritime targets regardless of diplomatic developments,鈥 wrote Mohammad Al-Basha, a Yemen analyst at the Basha Report risk advisory firm.
The British military鈥檚 United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center first said that an armed security team on the unidentified vessel had returned fire against an initial attack and that the 鈥渟ituation is ongoing.鈥 It described the attack as happening some 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Hodeida, Yemen, which is held by the country鈥檚 Houthi rebels.
鈥淎uthorities are investigating,鈥 it said. It later said the ship was on fire after being 鈥渟truck by unknown projectiles.鈥
Possibly a major escalation
Ambrey, a private maritime security firm, issued an alert saying that a merchant ship had been 鈥渁ttacked by eight skiffs while transiting northbound in the Red Sea.鈥
Ambrey later said the ship also had been attacked by bomb-carrying drone boats, which could mark a major escalation. It said two drone boats struck the ship, while another two had been destroyed by the armed guards on board.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said the ship was taking on water and its crew had abandoned the vessel.
The US Navy鈥檚 Mideast-based 5th Fleet referred questions to the military鈥檚 Central Command, which said it was aware of the incident without elaborating.
Moammar Al-Eryani, the information minister for Yemen鈥檚 exiled government opposing the Houthis, identified the vessel attacked as the Magic Seas and blamed the rebels for the attack. The ship had been broadcasting it had an armed security team on board in the vicinity the attack took place and had been heading north.
鈥淭he attack also proves once again that the Houthis are merely a front for an Iranian scheme using Yemen as a platform to undermine regional and global stability, at a time when Tehran continues to arm the militia and provide it with military technology, including missiles, aircraft, drones, and sea mines,鈥 Al-Eryani wrote on the social platform X.
The Magic Seas鈥 owners did not respond to a request for comment.
Houthi attacks came over Israel-Hamas war
The Houthi rebels have been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the region in what the group鈥檚 leadership has described as an effort to end Israel鈥檚 offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The group鈥檚 Al-Masirah satellite news channel acknowledged the attack occurred, but offered no other comment on it as it aired a speech by its secretive leader, Abdul Malik Al-Houthi. However, Ambrey said the vessel targeted met 鈥渢he established Houthi target profile,鈥 without elaborating.
Between November 2023 and January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and killing four sailors. That has greatly reduced the flow of trade through the Red Sea corridor, which typically sees $1 trillion of goods move through it annually.
The Houthis paused attacks in a self-imposed ceasefire until the US launched a broad assault against the rebels in mid-March. That ended weeks later and the Houthis haven鈥檛 attacked a vessel, though they have continued occasional missile attacks targeting Israel. On Sunday, the group claimed launching a missile at Israel which the Israeli military said it intercepted. Shipping through the Red Sea, while still lower than normal, has increased in recent weeks.
The Yemeni Coast Guard, which is loyal to the exiled government, has engaged in a firefight with at least one vessel in the Red Sea in the past as well.
Pirates from Somalia also have operated in the region, though typically they鈥檝e sought to capture vessels either to rob or ransom their crews. But neither the Yemeni Coast Guard nor the pirates have been known to use drone boats in their attacks.

Trump says there鈥檚 a good chance for Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal this week
  • Netanyahu earlier said he hoped his meeting with Trump could 鈥榓dvance鈥 Gaza deal ahead of Doha talks
  • Hamas seeking guarantees against a resumption of fighting during negotiations and of UN-led aid distribution system

WASHINGTON/JERUSALEM: US President Donald Trump on Sunday said there was a good chance a Gaza hostage release and ceasefire deal could be reached with the Palestinian militant group Hamas this week.
Trump told reporters before departing for Washington that such a deal meant 鈥渜uite a few hostages鈥 could be released.

Netanyahu said earlier in the day that he hoped his upcoming meeting with Trump could 鈥渉elp advance鈥 a Gaza ceasefire deal, after sending negotiators to Doha for indirect talks with Hamas.
Under mounting pressure to end the war, now approaching its 22nd month, the Israeli premier is scheduled to sit down on Monday with Trump, who has recently made a renewed push to end the fighting.
Speaking before boarding Israel鈥檚 state jet bound for Washington, Netanyahu said: 鈥淲e are working to achieve this deal that we have discussed, under the conditions that we have agreed to.鈥
He said he had dispatched the team to Doha 鈥渨ith clear instructions,鈥 and thought the meeting with Trump 鈥渃an definitely help advance this (deal), which we are all hoping for.鈥
Netanyahu had previously said Hamas鈥檚 response to a draft US-backed ceasefire proposal contained 鈥渦nacceptable鈥 demands.
Later Sunday, a Palestinian official familiar with the talks told AFP that indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas toward a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip had started in Qatar.
鈥淣egotiations are about implementation mechanisms and hostage exchange, and positions are being exchanged through mediators,鈥 the official said.

Earlier Sunday, a Palestinian official told AFP that Hamas would also seek the reopening of Gaza鈥檚 Rafah crossing to evacuate the wounded. Hamas鈥檚 top negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya was leading the delegation in Doha, the official told AFP.
Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions told AFP the proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel.
However, they said, the group was also demanding certain conditions for Israel鈥檚 withdrawal, guarantees against a resumption of fighting during negotiations, and the return of the UN-led aid distribution system.
On the ground, Gaza鈥檚 civil defense agency reported 26 people had been killed by Israeli forces on Sunday.
It said 10 had been killed in a pre-dawn strike on Gaza City鈥檚 Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, where AFP images showed Palestinians searching through the debris for survivors with their bare hands.
鈥淭he rest of the family is still under the rubble,鈥 Sheikh Radwan resident Osama Al-Hanawi told AFP.
鈥淲e are losing young people, families and children every day, and this must stop now. Enough blood has been shed.鈥
Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency.
Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it could not comment on specific strikes without precise coordinates.
Since Hamas鈥檚 October 2023 attack sparked the massive Israeli offensive in Gaza, mediators have brokered two temporary halts in the fighting during which hostages were freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.
Of the 251 hostages taken by Palestinian militants during the 2023 attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead.
Recent efforts to broker a new truce have repeatedly failed, with the primary point of contention being Israel鈥檚 rejection of Hamas鈥檚 demand for a lasting ceasefire. The war has created dire humanitarian conditions for the more than two million people in the Gaza Strip.

Karima Al-Ras, from Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, said 鈥渨e hope that a truce will be announced鈥 to allow in more aid.
鈥淧eople are dying for flour,鈥 she said.
A US- and Israel-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, took the lead in food distribution in the territory in late May, when Israel partially lifted a more than two-month blockade on aid deliveries.
UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives.
The UN human rights office said last week that more than 500 people had been killed waiting to access food from GHF distribution points.
The Gaza health ministry on Sunday put the toll at 751 killed.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a frequent critic of Israel, again accused it of committing 鈥済enocide鈥 in Gaza at a meeting of the 11 BRICS emerging nations in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
鈥淲e cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as the Brazilian president, popularly known as Lula, told leaders from China, India and other nations.
Hamas鈥檚 October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Israel鈥檚 retaliatory campaign has killed at least 57,418 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory鈥檚 health ministry. The United Nations considers the figures reliable.

Israel strikes Yemen鈥檚 Hodeidah port city
  • Strikes came shortly after the Israeli military's evacuation warning, Houthi's Al-Masirah TV confirms
  • Israeli military identified Hodeidah, Ras Isa and Salif ports and Hodeidah power station as targets

Yemen鈥檚 Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported early on Monday that Israel launched a series of strikes on Hodeidah, shortly after the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for people at three Yemeni ports.
The Israeli military鈥檚 Arabic spokesperson said late on Sunday that Israel will strike those areas due to military activities being conducted there.
In a statement, the military鈥檚 Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee identified those places as the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa and Salif, as well as the Hodeidah power station.

Author: P. A. LAGERSTORM

Fluid mechanics is one of the greatest accomplishments of classical physics.

The Navier-Stokes equations, first derived in the 18th century, serve as an accurate mathematical model with which to describe the flow of a broad class of real fluids.

Not only is the subject of interest to mathematicians and physicists, but it is also indispensable to mechanical, aeronautical, and chemical engineers, who have to apply the equations to real-world examples, such as the flow of air around an aircraft wing or the motion of liquid droplets in a suspension.
