黑料社区 held to surprise draw by Indonesia in World Cup qualifier
  • Next comes an away game in China on Tuesday to face a team thrashed 7-0 in Japan

JEDDAH: 黑料社区 were held to a 1-1 draw by Indonesia in Jeddah on Thursday on a day of surprises in Asia as the third round of World Cup qualification began.

It was very much a case of two points dropped against the lowest-ranked team in Group C, especially as Salem Al-Dawsari saw a penalty saved with 11 minutes remaining.

However, it could have been worse. Hours earlier, group rivals Australia had crashed to a 1-0 loss at home to Bahrain and, for a while, it looked as if Saudi boss Roberto Mancini was about to suffer a similar humiliation.

Indonesia may be Asia鈥檚 most improved team and bolstered by the naturalization of several European-based players, but they arrived for the clash ranked 133 in the world, a full 77 places below the hosts.

No wonder home fans at the King Abdullah Sports City expected a comfortable win.

黑料社区 took time to get going and had not really threatened before the visitors took the lead after 19 minutes. Ragnar Oratmangoen cut inside on the right edge of the area and his fierce shot deflected off Sandy Walsh and past the helpless Mohammed Al-Owais. The Indonesian fans went crazy as did the coaching staff, led by South Korean Shin Tae-yong.

While it shook 黑料社区 into action, chances were still hard to come by. Mohamed Kanno shot just wide and then Al-Hilal teammate Salem Al-Dawsari, sporting the captain鈥檚 armband, started to get into the game. The introduction of AS Roma鈥檚 new signing Saud Abdulhamid on the right side just after 30 minutes also gave the hosts a bit more bite and balance.聽

The final pass was not quite there though, and the Southeast Asians looked dangerous on the break.

Then, just before the break, the home team got the break they needed. Musab Al-Juwayr had control of the ball on the edge of the area but his shot took a major deflection on its way to the back of the net to bring a sense of relief all around the stadium. It surely changed the halftime team talks of both bosses.

Al-Nassr鈥檚 Abdulrahman Ghareeb came on at the start of the second half and should have done better three minutes in when, after some sloppy Indonesian play, he blasted a shot over and wide from a good position.

黑料社区 were applying pressure at last, however, and a second goal did not look to be too far away. Even so, the visitors looked to hit on the break and, for the neutral at least, the game started to open up in an entertaining fashion.

With 20 minutes remaining, 黑料社区 were on top but Mancini, wearing a shirt and tie, looked worried on the sidelines.

Al-Dawsari shot just wide from outside the area as the teams started to look a little tired on a humid evening. In the 76th minute, the hosts went even closer but Abdulhamid鈥檚 header came back off a post with goalkeeper Maarten Paes beaten.

However, moments later Paes gave away a penalty while trying to play out from the back. He ended up bringing down Firas Al-Buraikan and up stepped Al-Dawsari, the goalkeeper making amends for his mistake by making a diving save to his left.

It sparked 黑料社区 to even greater efforts. With two minutes to play, Kanno鈥檚 shot from outside the area was saved by Paes and the rebound went across the face of goal with no one on hand to hit home.

It was an agonizing sight for the home fans, but the winning goal never came, although Al-Buraikan saw a one-on-one chance spurned.

Next comes an away game in China on Tuesday to face a team thrashed 7-0 in Japan and desperate for some improvement.

黑料社区 will need to improve too. There are still nine games to go and the top two places that bring automatic qualification are still within reach, but the start should have been better. On the other hand, on what was a crazy day in Asia, it could have been worse.

  • Jannik Sinner will return to Riyadh to defend his Six Kings Slam title

RIYADH: Six Kings Slam is set to return this year as part of the opening week of Riyadh Season 2025 in October, with all six of the current Men鈥檚 PIF ATP-ranked players confirmed to compete.

Having recently secured his first Wimbledon title just last month, Jannik Sinner will return to Riyadh to defend his Six Kings Slam title when it gets underway, with the second edition of the tournament set to commence on Oct. 15 and the final being staged on Oct. 18.

ANB Arena will play host once again, where last October the World No. 1 came from a set down in a thrilling encounter to overcome five-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, and win the inaugural tournament.

The current top two players in the world, both confirmed to play in 黑料社区鈥檚 capital again this year, have since won all three of this year鈥檚 Grand Slams between them so far, with Sinner taking the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles and Alcaraz claiming victory at Roland Garros.

Last October鈥檚 Six Kings Slam was also memorable for staging the match of the great sporting rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal before the Spaniard鈥檚 retirement, with Djokovic triumphing in their third-place match 6-2, 7-6.

The record 24-time men鈥檚 singles Grand Slam champion Djokovic, currently ranked No. 6 in the world, will return this year as he bids to claim his first Six Kings Slam trophy, while making their first appearances at the Riyadh showpiece this year will be three-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev, 2024 US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and Great Britain鈥檚 World No. 5 Jack Draper.

  • Event at Urban Golf in Smithfield unveils interactive 3D digital display of three flagship Saudi golf courses
  • These next-generation venues will anchor Saudi鈥檚 broader ambitions to triple its number of golf courses by 2030

LONDON: With immersive tech, visionary course design, and a bold ambition to shape the next chapter of global golf, the Saudi Public Investment Fund and Golf Saudi officially launched PIF Future Fairways in central London on Tuesday 鈥 a preview event blending innovation with sport to highlight 黑料社区鈥檚 emergence as a world class golf destination.

The event at Urban Golf in Smithfield unveiled an interactive 3D digital version of three flagship Saudi golf courses 鈥 Shura Links, Laheq Golf Course, and Trojena Northern Golf Course 鈥 designed to position the Kingdom at the heart of golf鈥檚 next era.

These next-generation venues will anchor Saudi鈥檚 broader ambitions to triple its number of golf courses by 2030 and build a holistic sports and tourism ecosystem.

Attendees, including pro golfers, designers and industry leaders, explored virtual replicas of the new courses, demo-played signature holes on high-tech simulators, and took part in a 鈥渃losest to the pin鈥 challenge 鈥 all while engaging in off-the-record discussions with PIF stakeholders and Golf Saudi executives.

鈥淔or me, every experience that I have with Saudi, it鈥檚 been amazing,鈥 said Carlota Ciganda, one of Golf Saudi鈥檚 ambassadors. 鈥淚 know what they are capable of doing. These courses look amazing, a lot of fun to play 鈥 they鈥檙e going to attract a lot of people, a lot of tourists. I would love to go, play, and be part of this.鈥

Her sentiments were echoed by fellow ambassador Marianne Skarpnord, who said: 鈥淚 definitely see 黑料社区 becoming a golf tourist destination. 黑料社区鈥檚 landscapes are tailor-made for golf 鈥 from coastal settings to dramatic desert terrain. As we鈥檝e seen here today, there are some amazing courses being built 鈥 it鈥檒l be an easy choice for many people coming from the outside.鈥

Beyond new courses, the event also highlighted Golf Saudi鈥檚 long-term commitment to growing the sport from the ground up.

Dedicated programs and academies are now being developed throughout the Kingdom to nurture young talent and embed golf within the local culture 鈥 a critical step for any emerging golf nation.

黑料社区鈥檚 new courses 鈥 including the coastal Shura Links on Shura Island, the desert-framed Laheq Golf Course along the Red Sea coast, and the alpine-inspired Trojena Northern Golf Course in NEOM 鈥 are being designed not just for playability but for global competition. Each is expected to host future tournaments, including events on the PIF Global Series, which resumes this weekend with the PIF Championship at London鈥檚 Centurion Club.

The fusion of golf and tourism is at the heart of the vision. By integrating world-class design with environmental sensitivity and destination appeal, 黑料社区 is not only building venues but offering experiences tailored to the modern golfer.

鈥淭he goal is to reimagine how golf is experienced, shared, and celebrated 鈥 both locally and globally,鈥 said one stakeholder during the event. 鈥淭his is not about copying what exists elsewhere. It鈥檚 about creating something distinctly Saudi, with universal appeal.鈥

PIF Future Fairways will continue to appear at all PIF Global Series tournaments through 2025 and into 2026, serving as a traveling exhibition of 黑料社区鈥檚 golf transformation.

For now, Tuesday鈥檚 London event delivered a clear message: 黑料社区 is not just joining the global golf stage 鈥 it鈥檚 setting the direction for its future.

  • It said those results included higher revenue from its German Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen resulting from player transfers.
  • British media reported in June that Premier League champions Liverpool had agreed a fee of 136.3 million euros to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz

FRANKFURT: Investor concerns that Bayer鈥檚 earnings were inflated by soccer player transfer fees rather than supported by its core health care and agriculture businesses helped send its shares plummeting nearly 5 percent to a one-month low on Wednesday.

The German maker of pharmaceuticals and crop protection products reported in unscheduled preliminary results last week that second-quarter operating income, adjusted for some items, came in at a better-than-expected 2.1 billion euros ($2.43 billion).

In a more detailed disclosure on Wednesday, however, it said those results included higher revenue from its German Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen resulting from player transfers.

Bayer shares were down 4.7 percent at 0958 GMT.

Fresh details in Wednesday鈥檚 disclosure indicating that Bayer鈥檚 performance was also more the result of established blood thinner Xarelto than newer drugs with longer patent protection contributed to the stock selloff as well.

鈥淭he detail of the beat being somewhat related to Xarelto and the sale of a footballer could be disappointing to some,鈥 JPMorgan analysts said in a note.

British media reported in June that Premier League champions Liverpool had agreed a fee of 136.3 million euros to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.

Bayer鈥檚 finance chief Wolfgang Nickl, however, would not provide details on the transfer earnings on Wednesday.

鈥淚f we have these transfers, we need to compare the book value with the prices that we get, and that can lead to an extraordinary result on several players, and that was just recorded last quarter,鈥 he said during a call with journalists.

JOB CUTS, ROUNDUP PROVISIONS
Bayer also said it has now cut around 12,000 full-time positions since the start of a restructuring program aimed at speeding up decision-making and reducing managerial and administrative positions.

A previous tally for jobs slashed in 2024 was at 7,000.

The total number of global employees at the end of June stood at close to 90,000 when counted in full-time equivalents, according to its quarterly report.

Bayer, which is burdened by US lawsuits claiming its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, has said it is holding off on breaking up the diversified group even as some investors call for a sale of the consumer health unit or separate stock market listing for its crop science division.

It reiterated that it would have to stop US production of key Roundup ingredient glyphosate unless lawmakers, courts or regulators help it further stave off the costly litigation.

Bayer said last week it had added 1.2 billion euros to its provisions for the Roundup litigation.

Total Roundup litigation provisions totalled $7.4 billion, or 6.3 billion euros, it said on Wednesday.

LIV Golf announces return to Riyadh for 2026 season opener
  • Tournament will take place聽under the lights at Riyadh Golf Club from Feb. 5-7

RIYADH: LIV Golf has confirmed its return to 黑料社区 to launch its 2026 season from Feb. 5-7 under the lights at Riyadh Golf Club.

Cleeks Golf Club鈥檚 Adrian Meronk, winner of LIV Golf Riyadh 2025, said: 鈥淲inning in Riyadh was one of the proudest moments of my 2025 season. Playing under the lights, in front of such an electric crowd, brought out the best in me.

鈥淟IV Golf Riyadh presented by Roshn Group will be unlike anything else in the game. It鈥檚 fast, it鈥檚 bold, and it sets the tone for the entire season. I can鈥檛 wait to return and defend my title in 2026.鈥

Roshn Group, 黑料社区鈥檚 leading multi-asset class real estate developer, continues with LIV Golf as global Pillar Partner for the 2026 season. As the two organizations work together to accelerate the sport鈥檚 growth with new audiences, Roshn Group and LIV Golf will champion youth access to golf and promote golf training and talent development.

Last month, LIV Golf and Roshn Group jointly launched the 鈥淩ising Stars鈥 program, the first of its kind to educate and inspire young people in Saudi through the sport of golf. As part of a larger six-month golf program led by Golf Saudi, 鈥淩ising Stars鈥 participants will benefit from the mentorship at global events from LIV Golf players such as Talor Gooch and Jason Kokrak, lessons from coaches, and inspiring talks from LIV Golf executives, among other experiences.

The 2026 season will be the second consecutive year LIV Golf opens its season in Riyadh, a key stop on the league鈥檚 international calendar and a symbol of the Kingdom鈥檚 growing commitment to elite sport.

LIV Golf Riyadh presented by Roshn Group builds on the momentum of a groundbreaking 2025 event, in which Meronk claimed a wire-to-wire individual victory and Legion XIII, captained by Jon Rahm, dominated the team competition in the league鈥檚 revamped four-score format.

The 2026 event launches a packed global calendar that includes confirmed events in Adelaide (Feb. 13-15), Singapore (March 13-15), South Africa (March 20-22), Mexico City (April 17-19), and the United Kingdom (July 24鈥26).

Ross Hallett, executive vice president at LIV Golf, said: 鈥淭ogether, with Roshn Group鈥檚 continued partnership, we鈥檙e excited to bring our global stars once again to Riyadh for our season opener in 2026. Last year鈥檚 event was the very first LIV Golf event played under lights, and it provided an electrifying start for players and fans alike, delivering a truly unique viewing experience and reinforcing LIV Golf鈥檚 commitment to innovation.

鈥2026 will be bigger and better with a focus on providing an unforgeable experience including light shows, a food festival, fan experiences, fair rides, golf activities, hospitality, concerts and more. We are grateful for the support of Golf Saudi and Riyadh Golf Club who provide a world class facility for our players and teams to perform.鈥

Fans can expect to see a stellar field, including Meronk, and defending team champion Legion XIII, featuring Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin and Caleb Surratt. They鈥檒l be joined by international stars including 2025 season points leader and LIV Golf Jeddah 2024 champion Joaquin Niemann (Torque GC), Bryson DeChambeau (Crushers GC), LIV Golf Jeddah 2023 champion Brooks Koepka (Smash GC), Sergio Garcia (Fireballs GC), Cam Smith (Ripper GC), and Dustin Johnson (4Aces GC), among many others.

  • Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur
  • The 33-year-old South Korean superstar will join LAFC as a designated player after the club paid a reported fee of more than $20 million

LOS ANGELES: Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 33-year-old South Korean superstar forward is joining LAFC three days after he formally announced his decision to leave Tottenham.
Son attended LAFC鈥檚 Leagues Cup match against Tigres at BMO Stadium on Tuesday night, watching from a luxury suite. LAFC will formally introduce Son at a news conference Wednesday, but the club showed the forward on the stadium video board late in the first half as he waved to roaring fans thrilled by their team鈥檚 landmark acquisition.
LAFC, a deep-pocketed club with significant team success in its first eight seasons of existence, reportedly paid a transfer fee of more than $20 million, which could end up being the most ever for an MLS move.
Son was a beloved presence at Spurs, scoring 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances for the North London club while rising to global prominence with his combination of speed, playmaking skill and finishing acumen.
The captain was given a memorable farewell last week in Seoul during Tottenham鈥檚 exhibition match against Newcastle, getting a guard of honor from both teams and tearfully exiting in the second half while nearly 65,000 fans roared.
But South Korea鈥檚 most popular athlete 鈥 and almost certainly the greatest Asian soccer player in history 鈥 has chosen an auspicious stage for the next chapter of his groundbreaking career.
Los Angeles has the world鈥檚 largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea, with the city鈥檚 vibrant Koreatown district sitting just a couple of miles from LAFC鈥檚 BMO Stadium.
LAFC is undoubtedly hoping to market Son as a soccer counterpart to the Dodgers鈥 Shohei Ohtani, albeit on a smaller scale. Ohtani, the three-time MLB MVP from Japan who is on a trajectory to become the greatest Asian player in baseball history, draws fans from across the Pacific Rim to Dodger Stadium while attracting millions in sponsorships and partnerships for the Dodgers.
Son鈥檚 move to California also puts him in position to make an impact on and off the field at the World Cup, which will be held across North America in 2026. Son, the captain of his national team, already has said he will play in his fourth World Cup.
After leading Tottenham to its first European trophy in decades by winning the Europa League in May in a fitting cap to his English career, Son will go straight into the MLS Cup race when suits up for his new club. LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference at 10-6-6, but with multiple games in hand on every team in front of it because of its participation in the Club World Cup.
Son鈥檚 seven Premier League goals last season were his fewest since his Tottenham debut, but he still appears to have the pace and skill necessary to be a difference-maker at any level. He also turned 33 only a month ago, putting him on the younger end of the global stars recently arriving in MLS.
Lionel Messi and Marco Reus were 35 and Luis Su谩rez was 37 when they went stateside in recent years, while Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris were both 37 when they joined LAFC last year.
Son will be reunited in Los Angeles with longtime Tottenham teammate Lloris, who has been outstanding since becoming LAFC鈥檚 goalkeeper last season.
High-scoring French forward Denis Bouanga is the only designated player currently under contract for LAFC, and general manager John Thorrington has been criticized by some fans for not using the full power of his financial resources this season. LAFC spent months on an ultimately failed attempt to get France鈥檚 Antoine Griezmann to leave Atl茅tico Madrid.
Bouanga and Son have both thrived on the left wing during their careers, but Son likely has more positional versatility than Bouanga, making him a candidate to line up in the middle or even on the right wing.
Son seems to be an infinitely better fit for LAFC than Giroud, who moved to Lille last month after one disappointing year in California. LAFC plays a counterattacking, speed-based style that didn鈥檛 suit Giroud鈥檚 goal-scoring strengths, while Son should be right at home in such a system.
But LAFC also could alter its style in the winter after coach Steve Cherundolo departs for Germany following four largely successful seasons highlighted by an MLS Cup championship.
