  • Relocation of trees to expand green spaces, expedite lengthy process of growth and restoration

JEDDAH: Perennial plants, with their remarkable ability to endure harsh conditions such as droughts, climatic variations, and human activities, play a crucial role in our ecosystem, providing sustenance for people and animals, and contributing to the overall well-being of the environment.

Recognizing the importance of these invaluable assets, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has embarked on a program to relocate and care for perennial trees in the Madinah region.

In a four-month operation, the center moved some trees to Al-Bayda Al-Bari Park as part of the Kingdom鈥檚 aims regarding environmental sustainability and vegetation development.

Khalid bin Saadullah Al-Saidi, representative of the general administration of grazing and the general administration of protection, supervision, and inspection of NCVC in the Madinah region, told Arab News: 鈥淭he goal is to preserve the vegetation and relocate these perennial plants to maintain and care for them, achieving the desired objectives through collaboration and initiatives with environmental advocates across the Kingdom.鈥

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has embarked on a program to relocate and care for perennial trees in the Madinah region.

The relocation process involves a thorough selection of trees, based on their type, size, condition, age, and benefits.

Specialists from the center use modern methods to relocate the trees, minimizing damage and ensuring survival.

The criteria used in selecting the trees depend on the type of tree, whether it is wild or cultivated, its size, condition, age, and the extent of its benefit. (Supplied)

The process involves preparing the new site, digging, and manufacturing wooden molds to hold the trees, as well as providing carriers, equipment, and special transport tractors.

Perennials, such as Acacia ehrenbergiana, the Latin thorn tree (Acacia tortilis) and the Maerua crassifolia, that obstruct projects and development lines also will be relocated.

鈥淎cacia ehrenbergiana trees are important local trees in the Kingdom, characterized by their large size, numerous branches, and ability to withstand harsh climatic conditions,鈥 Al-Saidi said.

The wild acacia tree can act as a windbreak, and also provides shade and shelter for birds, as well as sustenance for livestock. The trees can grow to a height of about nine meters, and bear yellow flowers, mostly blooming from mid-February to May. These attract grazing bees, which produce 鈥淪alim鈥 honey.

The relocation process went smoothly, thanks to the presence of experts from the center, Al-Saidi said.

鈥淲e also acknowledge the cooperation of the Ministry of Transport branch in the region in transporting the trees on main roads, and the interest and cooperation of citizens in this initiative,鈥 he added.

This endeavor makes a substantial contribution to conserving and enriching biodiversity in the Madinah region. Focusing on indigenous tree species, which are integral to the environment and resilient to various conditions, is essential for ensuring sustainability for both present and future generations. The relocation of these trees not only expands green spaces, but also expedites the lengthy process of growth and restoration.

Earlier, on the occasion of World Environment Day, Al-Saidi said: 鈥淚t is always the duty of individuals to care for the environment and practice proper behaviors to ensure sustainability for the current and future generations.鈥

NCVC continues to work on such activities and initiatives throughout the year, aiming to safeguard mature and rare trees, ensuring their long-term sustainability, and enriching biodiversity and eco-tourism efforts.

The center鈥檚 efforts will lead to the preservation of a wide variety of trees across the Kingdom, promoting environmental sustainability and conservation.

Alqan Heritage Village: A window into 黑料社区鈥檚 past

JEDDAH: Near Haql city, located northwest of Tabuk, sits Alqan Heritage Village 鈥 one of 黑料社区鈥檚 most scenic and historic heritage sites. Also known as 鈥淭he Snow City,鈥 it is a popular destination during winter when the whole area can become covered in snow.

During warmer months, Alqan offers visitors a chance to explore the village鈥檚 traditional homes, which are built on raised areas using local sandstone. These structures reflect the region鈥檚 unique architectural style and building techniques, according to the Saudi Press Agency report.

The village is located about 170 km from Tabuk city in northern 黑料社区, and is surrounded by a stunning landscape of tall mountains and red dunes.

Alqan was built in 1934 by order of King Abdulaziz. It includes 20 houses made from red stone and mud, with palm trunks and fronds used for the roofs. These buildings were once used by the region鈥檚 first government employees and public offices.

Today, the village is officially listed in the National Register of Architectural Heritage. The Heritage Commission continues its efforts to document, protect and digitize such historic sites across the Kingdom.

Near the village is the Alqan customs checkpoint, built in 1965. The area is also home to several historical wells that were used to provide water to local communities. Among them is the well of 鈥淎bu Al-Alq,鈥 believed to have inspired the village鈥檚 name. Others say the name comes from small particles that sometimes appear in the well water.

Perched on a rocky hill, the village was carefully planned by early settlers, who chose the location based on natural features like wind direction, rainfall and privacy. Their thoughtful urban planning shows how well they understood the desert environment.

Alqan is best known for its snowfall, a rare feature in most of 黑料社区. Heavy snowstorms were recorded in 1945 and again in 1965, with snow lasting for several days. These events helped shape Alqan鈥檚 reputation as a winter retreat.
