VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis says his pilgrimage this week to the United Arab Emirates wrote a “new page in history of the dialogue between Christianity and Islam” and in promoting world peace based on brotherhood.
Telling pilgrims at the Vatican Wednesday about making the first-ever papal trip to the Arabian Peninsula, Francis described his encounter with leaders of Islam as a counterpoint to the “strong temptation” to contend there’s a current clash between Christian and Islamic civilizations.

ABU DHABI: The curtain fell on the historic visit of Pope Francis to the Arabian Peninsula at a Catholic mass in front of an estimated 180,000 worshippers in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi.

He reinforced the Christian themes of religious humility, understanding and peace. Sharing an altar with Christian and Muslim leaders, Francis delivered a 25-minute homily rich in Christian tradition.

Delivered in Italian followed by an Arabic translation from an assistant beside him on the outdoor altar, the pope assured the congregation that they were each blessed.

ABU DHABI: It was impossible not to be moved as Pope Francis entered Sheikh Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, ripples of excitement among the worshippers building into ecstatic cheers on a warm Tuesday morning.

This was history in the making — the first time the head of the Roman Catholic Church had visited the Gulf, and the first time a pope had led Mass in the region.

And the 180,000-strong congregation made this the largest public Mass ever held in the Gulf.

DUBAI: Arab women will play an important role in the pursuit of tolerance in the region, as more of them find roles in the education sector, a senior official at the Organization of Arab Women (OAW) has said.

“Women and men are all together, having active roles toward the pursuit of tolerance,” Dr. Fadia Kiwan, Director General at OAW, told Arab News on the sidelines of the Global Conference of Human Fraternity on Sunday.

ABU DHABI: He may have arrived at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in a Kia, but surely even this most humble of pontiffs could not fail to have been impressed by Abu Dhabi’s crowning architectural gem.

Pope Francis is known as the people’s pope — he refuses to live in the palatial Vatican apartment set aside for him, and eschews lavish limousines. But no amount of low-key transport, like the minibus that shuttled him away from the airport, was going to hide the UAE capital city’s splendor.

ABU DHABI: The first day of the historic visit by Pope Francis to the Arabian Peninsula ended with the signing of a “Human Fraternity Document” by the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and one of the highest authorities in Islam, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, grand imam of Al-Azhar Mosque.
The declaration of fraternity — which pledges the religious leaders to work together in perpetuity and to reject violence and radicalism — was also signed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, prime minister of the UAE, which hosted the ceremony in its capital Abu Dhabi.

Rev. Andy Thompson, Anglican chaplain in Abu Dhabi, said it is time that the Abrahamic religions speak out against rising intolerance that sees extremists justify their actions in the name of religion.

ABU DHABI: The growing level of intolerance in the world needs to be combatted by teaching children to be more inclusive, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Sunday.

Speaking at the Human Fraternity Conference in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, Aboul Gheit said the conference was happening “in the right place at the right time.”

He added: “There is no more important value today than tolerance, as sectarianism and racism rear their ugly heads all over the world.”

“We consider it a global model, so it can be adopted and implemented elsewhere,” said Dr. Sultan Faisal Al-Remeithi, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Elders.

The Catholic Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, Bishop Camillo Ballin, also hoped for a papal tour. “There are many Catholics in Northern Arabia,” he said.

ABU DHABI: It was a historic moment for the Arabian Gulf as Al Italia’s Boeing B777 touched down on the run way at the Presidential Airport in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from Rome shortly before 10pm on Sunday.

Onboard was Pope Francis, the first pontiff to visit a Gulf Arab country in the Vatican’s long history.

There was a wait, presumably as those onboard readied themselves for the moment that Christians in the UAE, and the wider Gulf region have been waiting for since the visit was announced in December 2019.

Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall swept across the UAE on Sunday morning, with satellite images from the National Centre of Meteorology showing more showers expected to come.
