RIYADH: The South Korean Embassy in Riyadh was alive with lights and sounds during an outdoor reception on Thursday night marking the country’s 95th National Day.
Moon Byung-Jun, the acting ambassador, said in his speech: “Tonight we are celebrating the journey of friendship and trust that Korea and have walked together.”
Among those in attendance was Dr. Faisal Al-Sudairi, undersecretary of Riyadh region, who joined as the guest of honor.
Moon reflected on the two nations’ cooperation since diplomatic ties were established in 1962, with the embassy opening in 1973.
He recalled how Korean engineers helped shape ’s infrastructure during the 1970s and 1980s, and how the relationship has since expanded.
He said cooperation now encompasses artificial intelligence, digital technology, defense, health care, education, culture and renewable energy, among other emerging sectors.
“’s Vision 2030 and Korea’s innovation-driven growth strategy are now in harmony, making our two nations strategic partners for a sustainable future,” Moon said.
He also noted recent high-level talks between Seoul and Riyadh on digital transformation, energy transition and smart-city development,
He quoted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who said “the determination of Saudis is as strong as Mount Tuwaiq — it will never be broken.”
“With the Tuwaiq spirit, Korea and will stand as firm as Mount Tuwaiq.”
Adorned with vibrant hanboks, the country’s traditional clothing, 11 Korean International School students enthusiastically sang their national anthem after a rendition of the Kingdom’s.
There were outstanding performances, including the thunderous beats of the Samulnori team from the Jindo National Gugak Center. And the high-energy choreography of Expression Crew — the first Asian group to win the “Battle of the Year,” often described as the World Cup of B-boying.
Korean food was also offered in a buffet and guests mingled over Korean staples including kimchi and rice, and various cooked meats, well into the evening.
Guests explored lively pop-ups and interactive spaces, stopping for photo opportunities, and testing their luck at games with small prizes.
Korean skincare brand Nuricle gifted guests a face serum, while a traditional folding fan was given to each attendee as a keepsake.
