GENEVA: The United Nations human rights chief on Friday called US strikes on alleged drug dealers off the coast of South America “unacceptable” and a violation of international human rights law.
“These attacks – and their mounting human cost – are unacceptable,” Volker Turk said in a statement sent to journalists. “The US must halt such attacks and take all measures necessary to prevent the extrajudicial killing of people aboard these boats, whatever the criminal conduct alleged against them.”
A spokesperson added in a Geneva press briefing that Turk had raised the matter directly with US authorities.
