  • Six-person jury found that Nicklaus Companies had damaged the 18-time major champion鈥檚 reputation
  • Golfing legend exposed to ridicule, hatred, mistrust, distrust or contempt

A six-person jury in Palm Beach County found Monday that the Nicklaus Companies had damaged the 18-time major champion鈥檚 reputation and exposed him to ridicule, hatred, mistrust, distrust or contempt

According to the lawsuit, Nicklaus, 85, claimed Milstein, O鈥橞rien and others at the company spread false stories that Nicklaus considered a $750 million deal to join the 黑料社区-backed LIV Golf League and that he was suffering from dementia

AP MIAMI: Professional golf legend Jack Nicklaus has won a $50 million verdict in a defamation lawsuit filed in Florida against his former business partners.

A six-person jury in Palm Beach County found Monday that the Nicklaus Companies had damaged the 18-time major champion鈥檚 reputation and exposed him to ridicule, hatred, mistrust, distrust or contempt. Nicklaus Companies owner and executive chairman Howard Milstein and executive Andrew O鈥橞rien were also named individually as defendants, but jurors did not find them personally liable.

Eugene Stearns, an attorney for Nicklaus, said Nicklaus has spent his life helping others and earning a reputation as not just a great athlete but a great human being.

鈥淗e deserved better than what he got, and we鈥檙e pleased that the jury addressed the particular circumstances that were so annoying,鈥 Stearns said.

According to the lawsuit, Nicklaus, 85, claimed Milstein, O鈥橞rien and others at the company spread false stories that Nicklaus considered a $750 million deal to join the 黑料社区-backed LIV Golf League and that he was suffering from dementia and no longer mentally fit to manage his affairs.

Defense attorneys said at trial that Nicklaus Companies executives never tried to defame Nicklaus and argued the case was basically a business dispute. They said no harm was done to Nicklaus鈥 reputation, and there was no reason for a company that shared the golfer鈥檚 name to attack him.

Attorneys for Nicklaus Companies didn鈥檛 immediately respond to emails seeking comment Tuesday evening.

Earlier this year, a New York judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Nicklaus Companies against Nicklaus that attempted to prevent the golfer from using his name, image and likeness to promote his golf course design business.

Nicklaus joined Nicklaus Companies in 2007 as part of a $145 million deal, but Nicklaus eventually quit and planned to continue designing golf courses on his own. While Nicklaus is once again free to design golf courses under his own name, Nicklaus Companies retains the rights to sell clothing and equipment with 鈥淛ack Nicklaus鈥 logos.

PSG score seven and Barcelona hit six on a goal-filled night in the Champions League
  • In all, there were 43 goals in nine games, with six teams scoring four or more
  • PSV Eindhoven routed Italian champion Napoli 6-2, while Arsenal and Inter Milan also had big wins to maintain their perfect starts in Europe
  • Haaland鈥檚 goal helped Manchester City to a 2-0 win at Villarreal

MANCHESTER, England: Paris Saint-Germain scored seven, Barcelona hit six and Erling Haaland struck his 24th goal of the season on an action-packed night in the Champions League on Tuesday.

In all, there were 43 goals in nine games, with six teams scoring four or more.

PSV Eindhoven routed Italian champion Napoli 6-2, while Arsenal and Inter Milan also had big wins to maintain their perfect starts in Europe.

But it is defending champion PSG that lead the way at the top of the standings after a wild 7-2 win against Bayer Leverkusen in a match that saw both teams reduced to 10 men in the first half.

Barcelona鈥檚 6-1 win against Olympiakos saw them bounce back from a loss to PSG at the start of the month.

Premier League leader Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 4-0, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice, and last season鈥檚 Champions League runner-up Inter beat Union Saint-Gilloise by the same score.

Haaland鈥檚 goal helped Manchester City to a 2-0 win at Villarreal.

PSG run wild in Leverkusen

By halftime at the BayArena PSG was 4-1 up 鈥 but that didn鈥檛 come close to telling the full story of a chaotic first period, which included a red card for each team and two penalties for Leverkusen.

Two goals for Desire Doue put the French champion well in control and the action continued after the break with Nuno Mendes extending the lead within five minutes of the restart. Ousmane Dembele also came off the bench to make a scoring return after injury.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 three games, three wins, and crucially we鈥檙e at the top of the UEFA Champions League table,鈥 Dembele said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e started this campaign really well, especially considering how difficult it was last season.鈥

Spare a thought for Aleix Garcia, though. As well as his first half penalty, he scored the goal of the game in the second half with a swerving long range effort that was nothing more than a footnote.

Lopez treble

Fermin Lopez scored a hat trick and Marcus Rashford hit two goals as Barcelona blew away 10-man Olympiakos.

Barca took full advantage when Santiago Hezze was shown a contentious red card in the second half 鈥 scoring four goals to complete the rout.

It was Lopez鈥檚 first hat trick of his career, with Lamine Yamal also on the scoresheet from the penalty spot.

Olympiakos had no answer when Hezze was shown a second yellow card in the 57th minute, despite replays appearing to show he did not make contact with Marc Casado, who was trying to pull him back.

Just three minutes earlier, the visitors had got back into the game at 2-1 after Ayoub El Kaabi鈥檚 penalty.

Then with the extra man Barcelona overwhelmed Olympiakos with four goals in 11 minutes.

Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, now has four goals in three games in the Champions League this season.

鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 difficult to break opponents down, but we have so many goalscoring players in different areas that getting goals is the least of our worries,鈥 he said.

Arsenal power past Atletico

Top of the Premier League and perfect in Europe, Arsenal are flying high.

A powerful second half at the Emirates saw Mikel Arteta鈥檚 team brush aside Atletico with summer signing Gyokeres sealing the victory with two goals in three minutes. Those goals ended the striker鈥檚 seven-game scoring drought for Arsenal.

鈥淚 am delighted as he fully deserves it. The workrate he brings to the team is outstanding. We value a lot of things that he does for the team and it was the biggest smile on his face today,鈥 Arteta said.

Goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli had given Arsenal a 2-0 lead before Gyokeres struck.

Arsenal are third in the standings 鈥 behind PSG and Inter on goal difference.

Red-hot Haaland

Haaland just can鈥檛 stop scoring right now.

The Norway international鈥檚 opener at Villarreal was his 24th in 14 games this season and extended his current scoring streak to 12 games in a row. He now has 53 goals in the Champions League in just 51 appearances.

The only game he didn鈥檛 score in this term was City鈥檚 2-0 defeat to Tottenham in August.

Bernardo Silva was also on target as City moved up to fifth.

Napoli stunned in Eindhoven

The biggest shock of the night was Napoli鈥檚 defeat at PSV.

That鈥檚 back-to-back losses for Antonio Conte鈥檚 team, following Saturday鈥檚 1-0 defeat at Torino. And such a heavy loss in Europe will be particularly humbling for the Italian champion, with three goals conceded in the last 10 minutes after going down to 10 men when Lorenzo Lucca was sent off in the 76th.

Napoli have just one win from three games in Europe so far.

It鈥檚 going better for Inter, who have a 100 percent record after three games and comfortably overcame Union Saint-Gilloise, with Lautaro Martinez scoring for the third time in the Champions League this season.

Newcastle and Dortmund win

Harvey Barnes scored twice in Newcastle鈥檚 3-0 win against Benfica and Borussia Dortmund won 4-2 in Copenhagen.

Kazakhstani team Kairat picked up their first point in European soccer鈥檚 elite club competition with a 0-0 draw against Pafos.

  • 3-1 win victory in Riyadh means they are the only club in the competition with a perfect record after 3 group stage games

RIYADH: Al-Hilal remain top of Group B in the AFC Champions League Elite after a 3-1 home victory over Al-Sadd of Qatar at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on Tuesday night.

The result means they are the only club in the 24-team competition with a 100 percent record of nine points from their opening three matches.

A 4-0 win over Al-Gharafa on Monday night leaves fellow Saudi side Al-Ahli, the reigning champions, in second place on seven points, while the remaining Saudi participants, Pro League champions Al-Ittihad, are in seventh place after beating Al-Shorta of Iraq 4-1 in Baghdad, also on Monday, to pick up their first points of the campaign.

Al-Hilal took the lead on 25 minutes through Turkish international defender Yusuf Akcicek after Al-Sadd鈥檚 defence made a hash of clearing a Theo Hernandez free kick. The home team鈥檚 other center-half, Senegal鈥檚 Kalidou Koulibaly, was credited with an assist for having the last touch before the decisive finish.

Five minutes before the break, Koulibaly turned goalscorer, nodding in a Ruben Neves corner from close range. After a long check by the video assistant referee for a possible foul, the goal was allowed to stand.

Al-Sadd got themselves back in the game in the 64th minute when former Al-Ahli captain Roberto Firmino stole in at the far post to tap home Pedro Miguel鈥檚 low cross from the right.

However, it was Al-Hilal who scored next, with nine minutes remaining, to all but kill off the match as a contest. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic hit a wonderful free kick from more than 30 yards out, curling the ball past a despairing Meshaal Bersham in goal.

Fermin hat-trick inspires Barcelona to 6-1 rout of Olympiacos
  • The match got off to a flying start when Fermin opened the scoring from a rebound in the seventh minute
  • Barcelona made the most of their numerical advantage as Yamal fired home their third goal

BARCELONA: A Fermin Lopez hat-trick and two goals from Marcus Rashford powered Barcelona to a crushing 6-1 Champions League victory over Olympiacos on Tuesday, with the Greek side left fuming over a controversial red card early in the second half.
The match got off to a flying start when Fermin opened the scoring from a rebound in the seventh minute. The 22-year-old pounced on a loose ball after Lamine Yamal鈥檚 shot was parried by the Olympiacos goalkeeper.
Fermin smashed the ball into the back of the net and he doubled his tally in the 39th minute by finishing off a lightning-quick counter-attack.
Pedri fed the ball to 17-year-old Dro Fernandez, who threaded a pass to Fermin and he coolly slotted the ball home to put Barcelona firmly in control.
Olympiacos had a glimmer of hope early in the second half when Ayoub El Kaabi鈥檚 header found the net in the 50th minute, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside.
However, the same review spotted a handball by Eric Garcia in the build-up, leading to a penalty which El Kaabi converted in the 54th minute to cut the deficit.

HEZZE SENT OFF
The visiting side鈥檚 momentum was short-lived, however, as Santiago Hezze was sent off in the 57th minute for a second yellow card.
It was a decision that left the Olympiacos players and coach fuming at official Urs Schnyder, as the replay showed that the Argentine barely touched his opponent鈥檚 face, but as it was a second yellow card offense a VAR review was not allowed.
Barcelona made the most of their numerical advantage as Yamal fired home their third goal from the penalty spot after Rashford was fouled in the box in the 68th minute.
The England forward added his name to the scoresheet with a strike from inside the box before Fermin completed his hat-trick and Rashford completed the rout in the 79th minute following a counter-attack.
鈥淲e needed a win like this ahead of Saturday鈥檚 El Clasico against Real Madrid,鈥 Fermin told Movistar Plus.
鈥淢y first hat-trick with Barca is just a dream come true.
We鈥檙e going into to El Clasico feeling very positive. It鈥檚 a very important game for the club, for us and for the Bar莽a fans.鈥

  • Tickets for the game at the Hard Rock Stadium were due to become available on Tuesday but organizers said the presale was 鈥渄elayed鈥

BARCELONA: La Liga鈥檚 plan to hold a Barcelona match in Miami in December has been called off because of 鈥渦ncertainty鈥 about the game within Spain, the Spanish top flight said in a statement Tuesday.
Champions Barca were set to face Villarreal in the United States on December 20, which would have been the first European league fixture to be played abroad.
La Liga said their promoter for the match decided to cancel the organization of the event because of 鈥渦ncertainty generated in Spain in recent weeks.鈥
The Spanish topflight said they 鈥渄eeply regret that the project, which represented a historic and unparallelled opportunity to take Spanish football to the international stage, cannot go ahead.鈥
Tickets for the game at the Hard Rock Stadium were due to become available on Tuesday but organizers said the presale was 鈥渄elayed鈥 before the plan was scrapped.
The match will now be held at Villarreal鈥檚 Estadio de la Ceramica home as normal.
European football governing body UEFA said they opposed the idea of games being played overseas but would allow it on an exceptional basis, along with a Serie A match in Australia in February between AC Milan and Como.
The plan to hold the match in the United States was criticized by various parties.
The Spanish Footballers鈥 Association (AFE) organized protests against it last weekend, with players from every team not moving for 15 seconds at the start of each league match.
Spanish giants Real Madrid also railed against it institutionally, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said Tuesday it would adulterate the competition.
Madrid captain Dani Carvajal told La Liga president Javier Tebas the game being held abroad would be 鈥渁 stain鈥 on the competition.
La Liga have been trying to hold a match abroad for several years.

Jannik Sinner鈥檚 decision to sit out Davis Cup criticized at home in Italy
  • Sinner said that he prefers to prepare for next season instead of helping the Azzurri aim for another title in Bologna
  • 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 seem like it, but a week of preparation in that period can make a difference鈥

ROME: Jannik Sinner鈥檚 decision not to play for host Italy in the Davis Cup Final 8 is being met with a sense of abandonment in his home country 鈥 where he was fiercely defended during his doping case earlier this year.
The second-ranked Sinner, who led Italy to tennis鈥 biggest team trophy the past two years, said that he prefers to prepare for next season instead of helping the Azzurri aim for another title in Bologna next month.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 an easy decision, but after Turin (where the ATP Finals are played the week before the Davis Cup), the goal is to start off on the right foot in Australia,鈥 Sinner said, referring to the Australian Open, where he is the two-time defending champion.
鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 seem like it, but a week of preparation in that period can make a difference,鈥 Sinner told Sky Italia on Monday from Vienna, where he is playing this week. 鈥淲e already won the Davis Cup in 2023 and 2024 and this time we decided like this with my team.鈥
The front-page headline in Tuesday鈥檚 Gazzetta dello Sport translated to: 鈥淪inner, think it over again.鈥
An accompanying editorial in the Gazzetta took Sinner to task for saying he already won the Davis Cup twice, pointing out how he also defended his title over the weekend in a lucrative exhibition in 黑料社区.
鈥淪o you鈥檙e not going to return to Riyadh for another $6 million? If you win another Wimbledon, you won鈥檛 go to London anymore? Pasta, coffee 鈥 Every five minutes you promote an Italian product. Do it with tennis, too,鈥 the Gazzetta editorial said, referring to the multiple Italian brands that Sinner represents in TV and other advertisements.
Added 92-year-old Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open winner who was Italy鈥檚 most successful player until Sinner came along: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a big slap in the face to the Italian sports world.鈥
Italians widely defended Sinner when he was hit with a three-month doping ban in February, while other top players insinuated that he received preferential treatment because of his high status and the time frame of the ban meant that he didn鈥檛 miss any Grand Slam tournaments.
Sinner has faced discrimination
It鈥檚 not the first time that Sinner has been criticized for not representing Italy. It happened when he didn鈥檛 play Davis Cup in 2023 and it happened when he didn鈥檛 play in the Paris Olympics a year later.
Sinner grew up in the German-speaking autonomous region of Alto Adige in northern Italy and has also faced an underlying sentiment that he鈥檚 not fully Italian.
Just last month, an Italian rapper was accused of inciting racial hatred for publishing musical lyrics saying that Sinner speaks with 鈥淎dolf Hitler鈥檚 accent.鈥 Fedez, the rapper, later apologized.
Panatta defends Sinner
Adriano Panatta, who led Italy to its only other Davis Cup triumph in 1976, defended Sinner鈥檚 choice, noting how the team competition is not considered as important as it was in his playing days.
鈥淭oday鈥檚 tennis requires players to have complete devotion. The players are like CEOs of companies that carry their names,鈥 Panatta wrote in Corriere della Sera. 鈥淪inner has won the Davis Cup twice and now he needs a break to gear up for his main goals: winning Slams, playing up to (Carlos) Alcaraz鈥檚 level, reclaiming No. 1. Those are his priorities.鈥
Paolo Bertolucci, who also played on the 1976 team and is now a TV commentator, agreed with Panatta.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 see anything wrong with the decision,鈥 Bertolucci told the Gazzetta. 鈥淭ennis has changed. Today what counts are the four Slams and then the ATP Finals. The rest is side stuff.鈥
