  • Ozone treaties have epitomized the concept of moving from science to global action
  • Mohammed Faisal: Beyond its direct commitments under the Montreal Protocol, the Kingdom integrates ozone layer protection within its broader environmental strategies

RIYADH: 黑料社区 joins the global community each year on Sept. 16 to commemorate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, marking the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol, one of the most successful environmental agreements in history.

Scientific confirmation of the depletion of the ozone layer prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer. This was formalized in the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which was adopted and signed by 28 countries on March 22, 1985.

Forty years ago, nations came together under the Vienna Convention and agreed to take appropriate measures to protect people and the planet from harmful UV radiation entering through a potentially damaged ozone layer.

Two years later the Montreal Protocol was adopted in 1987 and chlorofluorocarbons 鈥 chemicals used in refrigeration, aerosol sprays and foam production 鈥 started being phased out, setting the ozone layer on the road to recovery.

The ozone treaties have epitomized the concept of moving 鈥渇rom science to global action,鈥 which is the theme this year for International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

黑料社区 joins the global community each year on Sept. 16, strengthening its commitment to international and regional agreements focused on preserving the ozone layer.

Through active engagement in global environmental protection and sustainability initiatives, it has established a leadership role both regionally and globally, particularly in environmental protection and ozone layer efforts.

This positive role extends to implementing technical initiatives and projects, in collaboration with the public and private sectors, aimed at gradually phasing out ozone-depleting substances, particularly in the insulation, refrigeration and air-conditioning industries.

Mohammed Faisal, a botany professor at King Saud University, told Arab News: 鈥淏eyond its direct commitments under the Montreal Protocol, the Kingdom integrates ozone layer protection within its broader environmental strategies, most notably the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030. These frameworks emphasize emissions reduction, investment in clean energy and sustainable development 鈥 goals that naturally intersect with ozone preservation.

鈥淚n parallel with policy and regulatory measures, 黑料社区 is building a vast network of protected areas and nature reserves that reflect its commitment to environmental stewardship,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hese reserves conserve biodiversity, restore fragile ecosystems, and indirectly support ozone and climate protection by encouraging sustainable land use and reducing ecological stress.鈥澛

A notable example is the Farasan Islands Marine Protected Area in the Red Sea, a biodiversity-rich sanctuary that protects coral reefs and mangroves.聽Such ecosystems act as natural carbon sinks and vital buffers against climate change, reinforcing the Kingdom鈥檚 broader environmental and climate goals, he added.

The ozone layer has continued to heal, putting it on track for full recovery by mid-century, the UN said on Tuesday.

Released on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, the latest bulletin from the World Meteorological Organization showed that the ozone hole in 2024 was smaller than in recent years. While naturally occurring atmospheric factors were responsible for low levels of depletion, the long-term trend was positive, the UN body said.

The layer鈥檚 loss was once seen as humanity鈥檚 most pressing environmental challenge. The ozone layer, a region of the earth鈥檚 stratosphere, serves as a protective shield against the sun鈥檚 ultraviolet radiation, exposure to which can result in increased risks of skin cancer, cataracts and ecosystem damage.

Saudi fencer Dhai Al-Amiri, 17, is slicing through the barriers

Saudi fencer Dhai Al-Amiri, 17, is slicing through the barriers
  • With every medal, Al-Amiri tells a story of transformation and rise of Saudi women in sports
  • Dhai Al-Amiri: Wearing the national colors reminds me that I represent not only myself, but also my family, my community, my country, and the ambitions of Saudi women in sports

DAMMAM: The scoreboard lights up and Dhai Al-Amiri, sword raised, lets out a breath: it is another point, win, and step toward making her mark for 黑料社区 fencing.

As the sound of clashing blades fades into the background, the cheers rise from teammates and coaches. These have been the familiar sights and sounds at almost every competition in which she has participated.

At just 17, Al-Amiri has already become one of the Kingdom鈥檚 most promising athletes, a name that fans and competitors alike are beginning to recognize.

Ranked first in the Kingdom鈥檚 senior category, she has turned what began as a childhood curiosity into a string of podium finishes across the Gulf and beyond.

Today, her story represents much more than individual success 鈥 it symbolizes the arrival of Saudi women on the international fencing stage.

Her passion for fencing started early, growing up in a home where the sport was always present. Her father, a former fencer and now a national referee, was her first connection to the sport.

鈥淚 grew up around the sport always curious and interested,鈥 she said. 鈥淭o think now I have my own mask with our flag on it when my father鈥檚 mask was too big on me before.鈥

That simple image 鈥 a little girl trying on her father鈥檚 oversized mask 鈥 captures just how far she has come.

Today, Al-Amiri steps onto the piste wearing the 黑料社区 flag proudly, her stance firm, her eyes locked on the opponent in front of her. The transformation is striking: the curious child is now one of the sport鈥檚 fiercest competitors.

With each bout, she carries the weight of more than just a match. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an honor, a privilege, and a responsibility,鈥 she said.

鈥淲earing the national colors reminds me that I represent not only myself, but also my family, my community, my country, and the ambitions of Saudi women in sports.鈥

It is a sense of purpose that fuels her every time she competes, and it has propelled her to some of the biggest podiums in the region.

The past two years have been a whirlwind of competition. She won silver at the Saudi Games 2024, claimed second at the Arab Championships 2025 in the senior category, and added another silver at the Gulf Youth Championships.

In 2024, she became the first Saudi female fencer to reach the Round of 64 at the Junior World Championships 鈥 a milestone that placed her among the sport鈥檚 global elite 鈥 before going on to compete at the prestigious Grand Prix in Qatar earlier this year.

But for all the medals, there is one memory that stands above the rest. 鈥淥ne of my proudest moments was standing on the podium of the First Youth GCC Games carrying the Saudi flag,鈥 she recalled.

鈥淭hat moment symbolized years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication and it gave me the belief that I鈥檓 capable of achieving more.鈥

Every athlete has a defining test, and for Al-Amiri, it came at the Asian Championship, when she faced one of the highest-ranked opponents in the tournament.

The tension was palpable, every point a battle.

鈥淭he pressure was intense,鈥 she said, 鈥渂ut I focused on staying calm, sticking to my strategy, and adapting point by point. Even though it was a difficult match, it taught me resilience, mental toughness, and how to thrive under pressure.鈥

That ability to stay composed, even as the match tilted on a knife鈥檚 edge, is what she believes separates a good fencer from a great one.

That resilience does not just appear on competition day. It is built day by day through training sessions and mental preparation. Al-Amiri follows a routine that sharpens both body and mind.

鈥淚 visualize different scenarios, remind myself of my strengths, and build confidence through preparation,鈥 she explained. 鈥淏efore a match, I like to center myself with deep breaths and positive self-talk. It helps me enter the piste with clarity and focus.鈥

Her journey, however, has not been without obstacles. When she first started fencing, resources and opportunities for women in sports were scarce.

鈥淏ut with determination, family support, and the encouragement of coaches, I overcame those barriers,鈥 she said.

鈥淭oday, with the progress under Vision 2030, we have much more support and I鈥檓 proud to be part of this transformation.鈥

Vision 2030, she added, has 鈥渙pened doors for female athletes, providing platforms to compete internationally and showcase their talents.鈥

The Kingdom鈥檚 investment in women鈥檚 sports has meant that athletes like Al-Amiri can now train with better facilities, gain exposure to global competition, and inspire others to follow.

Despite the growing list of accomplishments, she insists that she is just getting started.

鈥淚n the short-term, I want to continue improving my international ranking,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n the long-term, my ultimate goal is to qualify for the Olympics and make history for Saudi fencing women.鈥

The dream of walking into an Olympic stadium wearing green and white is what keeps her pushing through every grueling practice, every early morning flight, every high-pressure match.

For Al-Amiri, her career is more than just medals, it is a message. 鈥淚 hope my journey shows that with passion, discipline, and perseverance, no dream is too big,鈥 she said.

鈥淚 want young Saudis, especially women, to believe in themselves, their potential for growth, and to break barriers 鈥 to know that they can achieve greatness.鈥

With her calm focus, fierce discipline, and growing international experience, Al-Amiri represents a new era of Saudi athletes. One where young women are stepping onto global stages, fearless and ready.

Each point she scores is not just for herself, but for every Saudi girl watching, every family cheering, every dream waiting to be realized.

Qiddiya carries out tree preservation and relocation program

RIYADH: PIF-owned megaproject developer Qiddiya Investment Company is carrying out a tree preservation and relocation program at its site on the outskirts of Riyadh.

A key focus of its program is preserving local tree species including the acacia tortilis, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The tree preservation process includes field surveys to assess the health of trees, and the company says it is making efforts to keep trees in their original locations.

If relocation is necessary, trees are moved either to other sites within Qiddiya or to a dedicated holding facility until they can be reused in landscaping plans.

About 3,000 native trees are currently housed in a nursery and closely monitored until replanting, supporting biodiversity, soil stabilization and protection against sandstorms.

The company will open some sites for public educational activities, aiming to set a precedent for sustainable development in the Kingdom, SPA reported.

In 2025, Qiddiya plans to expand its relocation efforts and evaluate replanting success rates by 2026.

The company also partners with universities and research centers to monitor the outcomes of its environmental programs.

This initiative aims to protect natural systems and enhance biodiversity, supporting Saudi Vision 2030 by integrating urban development with nature.

The company adheres to the 2021 Environment Act and collaborates with national bodies, including the National Center for Environmental Compliance and the National Center for Wildlife.

Qiddiya is also collaborating with the Green Riyadh project to work on environmental initiatives across the city.

This initiative aims to plant more than 7.5 million trees throughout the capital by 2030.

It involves the afforestation of 43 parks, 148 sq km of valleys and their tributaries, and 1,205 linear km of main roads.

The Kingdom is undertaking its ambitious Saudi Green Initiative, under which more than 151 million trees have been planted and 500,000 hectares of land rehabilitated so far, with a total goal of 10 billion new trees, SPA reported.
