European World Cup qualifying: Spain reigns, Tuchel’s England emerges and Mbappé keeps France steady
  • Erling Haaland’s five-goal haul in Norway’s 11-1 beating of Moldova pushed Italy closer to the playoffs in a group where goal difference could be decisive
  • Germany also could risk ending up in the playoffs next March

GENEVA: Spain still looks the best team in Europe, England finally put on a show in World Cup qualifying, and France got back-to-back wins while almost dropping points despite Kylian Mbappé’s goals.
Every European team have now begun their qualifying group, and it was a good week for 40-year-old greats Cristiano Ronaldo, in Portugal’s fast start, and Luka Modrić, with Croatia leading its group.
Erling Haaland’s five-goal haul in Norway’s 11-1 beating of Moldova pushed Italy closer to the playoffs in a group where goal difference could be decisive.
Italy had perhaps the strangest week in their quest to avoid missing a third straight World Cup.
The four-time champion earned six points and scored 10 goals yet ended with new coach Gennaro Gattuso filmed aiming expletives at an Israel player on the field after a wild 5-4 win.
Germany also could risk ending up in the playoffs next March after stumbling to an opening 2-0 loss at Slovakia. It was a first-ever German loss on the road in World Cup qualifying.
Slovakia might yet regret winning only 1-0 at Luxembourg from a 90th-minute goal. Only the group winner advance directly in November and goal difference is the first tiebreaker.
Stylish Spain
Euro 2024 winner Spain were denied adding a 2025 Nations League title only by a penalty shootout loss against Portugal at a final where it twice led.
Already Spain look Europe’s best hope at the 2026 World Cup. If a 3-0 win at struggling Bulgaria was routine, the 6-0 thrashing of Euro 2024 quarterfinalist Turkiye in Istanbul was a standout result.
A hat trick from midfielder Mikel Merino meant Spain did not need goals from Lamine Yamal though the 18-year-old star had two assists.
Spain look balanced, young and still improving for Luis de la Fuente, the understated coach. Hosting Georgia and star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on Oct. 11 in Elche should be a highlight of the next international break.
Tuchel’s England emerge
England demolished Serbia 5-0 in one of Europe’s more intimidating stadiums in Belgrade.
The style of victory should end talk that the Euro 2024 finalist are failing to fire under German coach Thomas Tuchel despite racking up wins and clean sheets. Tuchel called it “a statement victory against a difficult opponent in a difficult environment.”
The fine link-up play for the second goal between Noni Madueke, Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers, before Madueke scored, was extra impressive by players from three different clubs who combined have just 19 games for England.
France had a trickier first week and eked out wins against Ukraine (2-0) and Iceland (2-1), which were denied a late leveler in Paris by video review. Mbappé scored in each game and now is second on Les Bleus’ all-time list with 52 goals, trailing Olivier Giroud’s 57.
Swiss summit
A quarterfinal exit at Euro 2024 — in a penalty shootout against England — seemed to mask how good Switzerland were at the tournament. Dominant wins in the US in June against World Cup co-hosts Mexico and the US also went under the radar.
Switzerland were impressive starting a tight-looking qualifying group and used home advantage in Basel to full effect: Four first-half goals in a 4-0 win over Kosovo, then three before halftime to beat Slovenia 3-0.
Three of the seven goals were scored by Breel Embolo, fulfilling the promise he showed as a teenager. Captain Granit Xhaka is still running the show in midfield. Trips to Sweden and Slovenia follow in October.
San Marino’s hopes
The chance of the “world’s worst team,” 210th-ranked San Marino, getting into the European qualifying playoffs looks slim. San Marino are in contention because they are among 14 winners of a UEFA Nations League group last year.
The 16-nation playoffs in March involve the 12 runners-up in November of qualifying groups, plus four teams via their Nations League ranking. Those four will have finished no higher than third in qualifying groups.
San Marino are ranked No. 14 in Nations League standings so need at least 10 of the top 13 to win or place second in their World Cup qualifying group.
As it stands, Sweden — which took just one point this week from games against Slovenia and Kosovo — and Romania could need back-door entry to the playoffs. So too Northern Ireland, Wales or North Macedonia, plus Moldova. All would get in above San Marino.
World Cup draw in DC
There is a clear scenario for Italy being the team to avoid at the World Cup draw on Dec. 5 in Washington. Pay attention Brazil and Argentina, US and Canada.
For the second straight men’s World Cup, not all entries will be finalized before the tournament draw must be made.
Six placeholders will join 42 confirmed qualifiers to take account of playoff brackets decided in March. Four are in Europe and two in the intercontinental section.
All six placeholders come out of seeding pot 4 of lowest-ranked teams, even if a playoff contender is Italy (currently No. 11 in the FIFA rankings ) or Germany (No. 9).
For top-seeded teams, like the South American powers or the co-hosts, Italy would not be an ideal option.
Still, in the lopsided 48-team format — where third-placed teams in eight of the 12 groups must advance to the expanded first knockout round of 32 teams — everyone has a better chance than in the balanced 32-team group-stage format.

Gyokeres put the Gunners in front with a predatory header and Declan Rice increased the visitors’ advantage before half-time at Turf Moor
Gyokeres got back on track with his first league goal since September 13 and his sixth in all competitions

BURNLEY, United Kingdom: Viktor Gyokeres ended his Premier League goal drought as leaders Arsenal beat Burnley 2-0 to move seven points clear at the top on Saturday.
Gyokeres put the Gunners in front with a predatory header and Declan Rice increased the visitors’ advantage before half-time at Turf Moor.
The Sweden striker had gone five games without scoring in the top-flight as part of a disappointing spell of two goals in nine matches in all competitions.
Gyokeres got back on track with his first league goal since September 13 and his sixth in all competitions since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in the close-season.
Arsenal’s lead in the title race is likely to be trimmed by the time the rest of the weekend’s games are played, but a blistering run of nine successive victories in all competitions has served as a significant statement to their rivals.
Mikel Arteta’s side have won eight of their 10 league games and their parsimonious defense has not been breached for seven successive matches in all competitions.
After finishing as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons, Arsenal are determined to finally win their first English title since 2004 and their first trophy of any kind since the 2020 FA Cup.
Questions were being asked about Arteta’s ability to lead Arsenal to the title before the start of the season, but the Spaniard has taken advantage of champions Liverpool’s collapse to put his team in a strong position.
Currently in the midst of a hectic run of seven matches in just 22 days, the Gunners return to action in the Champions League at Slavia Prague on Tuesday.
- Relentless Arsenal -
Arsenal’s remarkable prowess at dead balls has seen them nicknamed “Set-Piece FC” this season.
They were the first team in Europe’s top five leagues to score 10 goals from set-pieces in the current campaign and they struck in familiar fashion in the 14th minute.
After Gabriel Magalhaes combined with Rice to set up Eberechi Eze’s winner against Crystal Palace last weekend, the same duo laid on Gyokeres’s opener.
Rice’s in-swinging corner reached Gabriel and the Brazilian knocked it back to Gyokeres for a clinical close-range header.
It was the eighth time Arsenal had scored from a corner so far this season — the most ever from a team in their first 10 matches of a Premier League campaign.
Burnley had no answer to Arsenal’s aerial barrage and Jurrien Timber should have doubled the lead when he met another Rice corner with a header that flashed over.
Arteta’s men were pouring forward in waves and they went close again when Gyokeres teed up Bukayo Saka for a strike that was palmed away by Martin Dubravka before Leandro Trossard’s follow-up was cleared off the line.
Arsenal’s relentless pressure produced a second goal in the 35th minute when Trossard’s chipped cross was headed emphatically past Dubravka by Rice.
Gyokeres was unable to finish the match as Mikel Merino replaced him at the break in a fresh fitness scare for the injury-hit Gunners.
But Arsenal were so dominant that Burnley were unable to muster a single shot in the first hour as the visitors cruised to victory in commanding style.

Flick will ‘protect’ Barca teen star Yamal
  • “We are very honest together, he with me and I with him and this is the best way,” Flick said
  • “I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic guy, he’s very young and we will go on this way“

BARCELONA: Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Saturday he will “protect” teenage star Lamine Yamal after recent criticism.
The 18-year-old winger struggled in the Clasico last weekend as champions Barca fell to a defeat that left them five points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
Yamal was also in the spotlight for comments before the game insinuating Madrid “steal (and) complain” which riled Los Blancos fans and a big part of the Spanish media.
“We speak with him... we are very honest together, he with me and I with him and this is the best way,” Flick told a news conference ahead of Barca’s match against Elche on Sunday in La Liga.
“I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic guy, he’s very young and we will go on this way.”
Yamal has been struggling with a groin injury for a few weeks and although he started the Clasico, he put in a subdued performance and still seems affected by the issue.
“Lamine is good. I just spoke with him and he’s doing good,” continued Flick.
“Of course he has some days where he feels some pain but now he really works hard, he improve a lot about these things. He’s on a good evolution so this is what we can say.”
The German coach said Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo were available again after injury, while Barca are still without Pedri Gonzalez, Gavi and Joan Garcia among others.
Flick explained veteran striker Lewandowski and playmaker Olmo’s returns had helped raise the quality in training.
“What I can see now with Dani and also with Lewy back, the last two training (sessions) were very good,” added Flick.
“It’s not just that they increase the level and quality, but that the others are increasing their level, also the young players. It’s nice to see and hopefully we can show it tomorrow.”
The Catlans host Elche at the Olympic Stadium, with the promoted side coached by Eder Sarabia, who was a former Barca assistant coach under Quique Setien.
Elche are in mid-table after a strong start to the season, having suffered only two defeats, and Flick said they play “fantastic football.”

  • “Tennis hasn’t been just a game for me. It has given me purpose when I was lost, strength when I was broken and belief when the world doubted me,” Bopanna said

MUMBAI: India’s Rohan Bopanna announced his retirement from tennis on Saturday, bringing an end to a sporting career that spanned more than two decades.
Bopanna, now 45, celebrated becoming the oldest number one in men’s doubles history in 2024 by winning the Australian Open with his partner Matthew Ebden.
His previous Grand Slam win was in the 2017 French Open mixed doubles with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski.

Bopanna won 26 men’s doubles titles since turning professional in 2003, according to the ATP Tour.
“Tennis hasn’t been just a game for me. It has given me purpose when I was lost, strength when I was broken and belief when the world doubted me,” Bopanna said in a post on Instagram announcing that he was hanging up his racquet.
He said that, while he “may be stepping away from competition,” he planned to give back to the sport by helping “young dreamers from small towns.”
“My gratitude is endless and my love for this beautiful game will never fade.”
Bopanna, from the small town of Coorg in southern India’s Karnataka state, has said his long career had taken a toll on his body and left him with “no cartilage” in his knees.
However, he said regular yoga workouts had helped him achieve the mental and physical strength needed to keep competing at the top level.
“Every single morning I do a lot of yoga, a lot of meditation,” he said.
“My mind doesn’t feel rushed.”
