DUBAI:听黑料社区 actress and director Fatima Al-Banawi is now the brand ambassador for Montblanc.

The star recently shared pictures on her Instagram profile posing with products from the brand, including writing instruments, leather goods and accessories.

In the images, she is seen in different settings: holding a pen and notebook while seated on a cushioned chair; and dressed in a trench coat with a notebook and leather backpack beside her.

She is also pictured at a desk with postcards, a fountain pen, and leather stationery items; and standing by a window wearing a blazer while carrying a leather portfolio and wearing a watch.

This marks another major brand collaboration for Al-Banawi, who previously appeared in Estee Lauder鈥檚 2023 campaign 鈥淭ogether We Shine,鈥 celebrating Arab women.

Al-Banawi first gained prominence for her role in the 2016 drama 鈥淏arakah Meets Barakah.鈥 She also starred in the Egyptian Netflix series 鈥淧aranormal.鈥

In 2020, she directed her first short film, 鈥淯ntil We See Light.鈥 That same year, she co-wrote, co-directed and starred in 鈥淎l-Shak,鈥 a Shahid Original series, which she shot fully from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She has been making headlines recently for her film 鈥淏asma,鈥 which premiered on Netflix in June.

The movie marks Al-Banawi鈥檚 debut as a feature film director. She also wrote the screenplay, contributed an original song to the soundtrack, and played the lead.

The film follows a young Saudi woman who returns to her hometown of Jeddah after two years studying in the US, only to discover that her parents have divorced without telling her.

The story explores her emotional reckoning with the past, including her father鈥檚 mental illness and the impact it had on the family. The role of her father, Dr. Adly, is played by Yasir Al-Sasi.

As she reconnects with her family, Basma is distraught to learn that her beloved father has moved out 鈥 and worse, that most of the family members are reluctant to visit him.

Convinced that all he needs is the love and care of family, she decides to move in with him, defying the advice of her mother Hind (Shaima), brother Waleed (Tared Sindi), and uncle Hamza (Mohammed Essam).

The reunion turns out to be quite challenging.

British-Egyptian actor听Amir El-Masry ready to take festival circuit by storm听

DUBAI: British-Egyptian actor Amir El-Masry is having the busiest year of his career. With two films set鈥痶o make major debuts on the festival circuit and a slate of projects across cinema and television,鈥疎l-Masry is taking 2025 by storm.

His new film 鈥100 Nights of Hero鈥 debuts at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 6, and will close the London Film Festival鈥痠n early October. The project 鈥 adapted from Isabel Greenberg鈥檚 graphic novel (which was itself based on the Middle Eastern folk-tale collection 鈥淥ne Thousand and One Nights鈥) 鈥 caught El-Masry鈥檚 attention鈥痠mmediately.

鈥淔irst and foremost, what drew me to the film was the passion of the director,鈥疛ulia Jackman,鈥 the Cairo-born, 35-year-old actor tells Arab News. 鈥淚 really love her style. I鈥檇 seen her short film 鈥楶igs鈥 and it was great. I couldn鈥檛 wait鈥痶o have a meeting with her.鈥

The second attraction was the chance to try something new.鈥滻t鈥檚 based off of a graphic novel 鈥 something that I鈥檝e not actually done before,鈥 El-Masry says. 鈥淚 always try and鈥痙o something that鈥檚 untouched waters for me.鈥

Masry plays Jerome, a newlywed whose apathy towards his wife leads to a鈥痙angerous gamble.

鈥淗e sets a wager with his friend to say, 鈥楲isten: I鈥檓 going to be away for鈥100 nights. If you are able to woo my wife, you get to keep her and the castle,鈥欌 El-Masry explains.

Apart from the director, the impressive ensemble cast 鈥 which includes Emma Corrin, Maika Monroe, Nicholas Galitzine, Felicity Jones, Charli XCX and Richard E. Grant 鈥 was also a huge draw for El-Masry.

鈥淥n paper, with a cast like that,鈥痽ou鈥檇 assume it鈥檚 a multi-million-dollar project, when in actual fact it wasn鈥檛,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut this is the power of Julia and the whole team. The script was鈥痟ugely sought after, and they were able to draw amazing talent. Emma Corrin is just鈥痬esmerizing. And I鈥檓 a big fan of Richard E. Grant 鈥 I was lucky enough to work with him in 鈥楽tar Wars.鈥 And鈥疐elicity Jones, I was in 鈥楻osewater鈥 with, and now she鈥檚 become a household name in Britain. I鈥痜eel very privileged to be amongst them.鈥

The London Film Festival will be getting a double dose of El-Masry this year. Aside from 鈥100 Nights of Hero,鈥 the actor also appears in 鈥淕iant,鈥 which screens the day before.

Directed by British-Indian filmmaker Rowan Athale, 鈥淕iant鈥 tells the true story of legendary鈥疊ritish-Yemeni boxer Naseem Hamed (aka Prince Naseem), with El-Masry in the demanding lead role. Preparing for鈥痶he part meant months of physical and emotional training.

鈥淚t was intense,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 trained for about five weeks, pretty much in a camp, 12-hour-day sessions. I鈥檇 wake up at 6 a.m., go to the gym at 7 a.m., and finish working out at 7 p.m.鈥

The process included strict dietary plans and intensive movement coaching.

鈥淚 had the best鈥痶rainers鈥 my diet was very high in protein with a lot of carbs, because I was working out the鈥痺hole day. And I had an amazing choreographer, Polly Bennett, who also helped Rami Malek in鈥橞ohemian Rhapsody.鈥

鈥淚t was a lot of research 鈥 watching videos of Naseem, interviews of him.鈥疊ecause it鈥檚 one thing to do an impression of someone, but it鈥檚鈥痑nother thing capturing their essence.鈥

The film also stars Pierce Brosnan as his trainer. Brosnan鈥檚 professionalism left a deep impression鈥痮n El-Masry.

鈥淗e鈥檚 just a consummate gentleman and professional,鈥 El-Masry said. 鈥淗e treated it like it was his first job. He鈥檇 give 100 percent off-camera for my close-ups. We have a鈥痸ery intense scene towards the end of the movie, and he really gave. He was a real father figure in this whole process. Honestly, I love that guy.鈥

For El-Masry, the story goes far beyond boxing. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a human story. Expect to see a film that is more like 鈥楤illy Elliot鈥 than 鈥楥reed.鈥欌疻e have the exciting fights, but it鈥檚 also such a grounded, gritty British drama.鈥

Even with two major film releases to promote, El-Masry isn鈥檛 slowing down. He is currently filming the鈥痵econd season of 鈥淭he Agency鈥 for Paramount, starring alongside Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey鈥疻right, Richard Gere, and Jodie Turner-Smith.

鈥淚鈥檓 a series regular in the new season,鈥 he reveals. 鈥淎gain, that鈥檚 new territory for me.鈥

He is also reprising his role in the comedy 鈥淔aithless,鈥 about a half-Irish, half-Egyptian family鈥痩iving in Dublin. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a super-fun show about a family trying to navigate life and raise three girls鈥痺ith no skill whatsoever. I love doing it, and I love doing the Irish accent 鈥 it鈥檚 one of my鈥痜avorites.鈥

Alongside his international projects, El-Masry continues to champion Arab stories on screen too.

In the 2020 comedy-drama 鈥淟imbo,鈥 he won acclaim for his performance as Omar, a Syrian鈥痬usician hoping to settle in the UK who finds himself placed on a remote Scottish鈥痠sland with fellow asylum seekers waiting for their applications to be processed. In the 2019 Danish film 鈥淒aniel,鈥 El-Masry played a member of a Daesh group who kidnap a photojournalist. 鈥淭his man was so interesting as a person 鈥 how can someone become so vile? I wouldn鈥檛 ever be鈥痠nclined to play a terrorist at all; I remember being worried what people would think of this鈥痳epresentation of Islam,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut a journalist who had met him told me, 鈥楧on鈥檛鈥痽ou worry, Islam will always defend itself. This man does not represent Islam.鈥 That gave me鈥痗onfidence.

鈥淚 think a lot about Arab representation when I pick scripts,鈥 he continues. 鈥淚 always go towards the鈥痶ruth. We have to give the audience the benefit of the doubt 鈥 they are intelligent enough to鈥痙ecipher the difference between fact and fiction. So I always go for something that鈥痵peaks true to me, but also speaks true to others.鈥

He cites 鈥淭he Stories,鈥 by Egyptian-Austrian director Abu Bakr Shawky, which is due to premiere on鈥痶his year鈥檚 festival circuit. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an international film, with French, Austrian,鈥疊elgian and Egyptian producers. It has that universal story about love and how, even if two鈥痯eople don鈥檛 speak the same language, they can be connected in so many ways,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hose are the鈥痥ind of stories that I wish to promote more.鈥

Recipes for success: Chef Wai Mon鈥痮ffers advice and a tasty wagyu mushroom kamameshi recipe鈥

DUBAI: Chef Wai Mon has led kitchens at some of the region鈥檚 most talked-about restaurants, including Zuma, LPM and Bungalow 34. Now, as head chef of the Michelin-listed C脡 LA VI Dubai, his focus is on refining modern Asian cuisine, he told Arab News. Mon brings a clear vision to the table: create food that is 鈥渂old, balanced and memorable.鈥濃

When you started out, what was the most common mistake you made?

Managing my time effectively鈥痺hile maintaining consistent quality. In the beginning, I was very focused on creating creative dishes and presenting them with fine, artistic plating. But I soon realized that鈥痬astering the fundamentals, like core techniques and consistency, is more important. I think many young chefs get caught up in trying to impress with new ideas before they鈥檝e really built a solid foundation.

What鈥檚 your top tip for amateur chefs?

A sharp knife is not just safer, but it also makes the cooking process smoother and more enjoyable. Second, keep it simple 鈥 try not to overload your dish with too many ingredients. Simplicity often brings out the best flavors. Also, learn the importance of鈥渕ise en place鈥 鈥 prepping and organizing all your ingredients before you start cooking. It saves a lot of time and stress.

What one ingredient can instantly improve any dish?

It鈥檚 hard to choose just one, so I鈥檒l go with鈥痶wo essentials: salt and garlic. Salt is a powerful flavor enhancer. It helps balance a dish and brings out the natural flavors of ingredients. It also plays a role in texture and the overall mouthfeel. Garlic, on the other hand, adds鈥痑roma, depth and umami. It鈥檚 incredibly versatile and can completely transform the flavor profile of a dish, whether it鈥檚 roasted, saut茅ed or raw.

When you go out to eat, do you find yourself critiquing the food?

I do, especially when it comes to flavor, seasoning and presentation. But I always try to keep my feedback fair. I understand the pressures that come with running a busy kitchen.

What鈥檚 the most common issue you find in other restaurants?

Poor seasoning鈥痠s a big one. Dishes are often under-salted because chefs are afraid of going too far, but this usually results in food that tastes bland. I also see鈥痠nconsistent cooking, where the same dish can vary in quality depending on who鈥檚 preparing it. And I鈥檝e noticed鈥痑 lack of cohesion鈥痠n some dishes, where the elements don鈥檛 really come together in a balanced way.

What鈥檚 your go-to dish if you have to cook something quickly at home?

One of my favorites is鈥痺arm prawns. It鈥檚 very simple 鈥 just prawns with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and fresh basil. It鈥檚 light, healthy and full of flavor.

What customer behavior most annoys you?

Something that can be frustrating is when customers鈥(demand quick service). Good cooking takes time. It鈥檚 about quality, not just speed.

C脡 LA VI Dubai is Michelin-listed. (Supplied)

What鈥檚 your favorite dish to cook?

Fishcake curry. It鈥檚 very nostalgic for me. It reminds me of home and family meals. The dish is beautifully balanced 鈥斺痵avory, spicy, aromatic and packed with texture. Every bite feels like a flavor explosion, and it really takes me back to street markets and home kitchens in Southeast Asia. It鈥檚 comfort food with depth.

What鈥檚 the most difficult dish for you to get right?

There was a dish I used to make called鈥痶rio chicken. It had three different styles of chicken on one plate. It tasted amazing, but the preparation was incredibly detailed and the challenge was in keeping the consistency high every time. It really tested my skill and my patience.

As a head chef, what are you like?

I try to be鈥痜irm but fair. I鈥檓 very disciplined, but I also believe in leading with patience and persistence. I see my role as someone who鈥痚ducates and inspires, I want to help my team grow into strong, confident chefs and future leaders. I focus on creating a respectful and focused environment 鈥 I value communication, calmness under pressure and mutual respect. But I have zero tolerance for laziness.

Gaza docu-drama on Hind Rajab gets record 23-minute ovation at Venice premiere

VENICE: A gut-wrenching new film about a five-year-old girl killed by Israeli forces in Gaza last year was given a record breaking 23-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the star-studded Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.

鈥淭he Voice of Hind Rajab鈥, a docu-drama about real events from January 2024, left much of the audience and many journalists sobbing as it screened for the first time.

Franco-Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania and her cast, all dressed in black, were also in tears as they soaked in applause, cheers and shouts of 鈥淔ree Palestine! at the 1,032-seat main festival cinema.

鈥淲e see that the narrative all around world is that those dying in Gaza are collateral damage, in the media,鈥 Ben Hania told journalists ahead of the premiere.

鈥淎nd I think this is so dehumanising, and that's why cinema, art and every kind of expression is very important to give those people a voice and face.鈥

Her film tells the story of Hind Rajab Hamada who was fleeing the Israeli military in Gaza City with six relatives last year when their car came under fire.

The sole survivor, her desperate calls with the Red Crescent rescue service -- which were recorded and released -- brief caused international outrage.

鈥淭he Voice of Hind Rajab鈥 has plenty of famous names attached as executive producers -- from actors Joaquin Phoenix, who attended the premiere, and Brad Pitt to Oscar-winning directors Jonathan Glazer (鈥淭he Zone of Interest鈥) and Mexico's Alfonso Cuaron (鈥淩oma鈥).

鈥淚'm very happy, and I never in my life thought that can be possible,鈥 Ben Hania said of her A-list backers.

Its premiere came on the same day as a senior Israeli military official said one million Palestinians could be displaced by a new offensive around Gaza City.

VENICE: The director of a new film about a five-year-old girl killed by Israeli forces in Gaza told the Venice Film Festival Wednesday she wanted to give 鈥渁 voice and a face鈥 to victims.
鈥淲e鈥檝e seen that the narrative all around the world is that those dying in Gaza are collateral damage, in the media, and I think this is so dehumanizing,鈥 Franco-Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania told journalists ahead of the world premiere of 鈥淭he Voice of Hind Rajab.鈥
鈥淎nd that鈥檚 why cinema, art, and every kind of expression is very important to give those people a voice and a face.鈥

Gaza has been front and center at the prestigious event in Venice after a group of filmmakers and others called on festival organizers to more forcefully condemn the war.
Ben Hania鈥檚 film is one of 21 in the running for the Golden Lion prize.
It tells the true story of the girl who pleaded with emergency services to come and rescue her after Israeli forces killed the rest of her family in their car while evacuating from Gaza in January 2024.
The movie uses the actual audio from phone calls Hind made with the Red Crescent.
鈥淭his movie was very important for me because when I heard the first time the voice of Hind Rajab, there was something more than her voice,鈥 said Ben Hania.
鈥淚t was the very voice of Gaza asking for help and nobody could enter,鈥 she added.
鈥淚t was like a kind of strong desire and the feeling of anger and helplessness that gave birth to this movie.鈥
Ben Hania was the first filmaker to represent Tunisia at the Academy Awards in 2021.
