  • Newly formed nomination committee comprises independent film professionals and experts

RIYADH: The Saudi Film Commission has invited local filmmakers to submit their work for a historic first Oscar entry.

For the first time the commission has opened submissions for filmmakers to put forward their works for consideration as 黑料社区鈥檚 official entry to the 98th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film Award category.

The process was previously handled through direct nominations by the commission based on its own criteria.

On Sunday, the commission announced the rules and selection process for the Kingdom鈥檚 submission.

They include details on the formation of the nomination committee, film eligibility requirements, and submission procedures, in a move aimed at enhancing the global presence of Saudi cinema and supporting the Kingdom鈥檚 position in the international film industry.

The first theatrical release of the film in 黑料社区 must have taken place between Oct. 1, 2024 to Sept. 30, 2025, with a qualifying commercial run of at least a week.

The newly formed nomination committee comprises independent film professionals and experts, operating under academy rules to ensure transparency, fairness, and impartiality in the evaluation process.

The committee will review and discuss eligible applications before voting.

Notably, as part of its efforts to empower Saudi filmmakers and connect them with the global film landscape, the Film Commission is participating in the Locarno Film Festival to cement its presence in European and global markets.

The Locarno Film Festival, taking place from Aug. 6 to 16, 2025 is an annual international film festival held in Locarno, Switzerland, since 1946, and is known for showcasing experimental and arthouse cinema, as well as debut works by emerging directors.

Chinese museum hosts exhibition of ancient AlUla artifacts聽

DUBAI: 黑料社区鈥檚 Royal Commission for AlUla has opened a major exhibition in China highlighting the rich history of the ancient North Arabian kingdoms.

Being held at the Shang Dynasty Capital Site Museum in Henan province until Jan. 5, 鈥淕limpses of the Ancient North Arabian Kingdoms鈥 forms part of the Saudi Ministry of Culture鈥檚 Saudi-Chinese Cultural Year and is jointly curated by the commission and the museum.

It explores the kingdoms of Dadan, Lihyan and Nabataea, which once controlled caravan routes linking Arabia with Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. Centered in AlUla, these civilizations left behind temples, tombs, inscriptions and artworks.

More than 30 rare objects from AlUla are on display, including 15 being shown to the public for the first time. Highlights include a sandstone statue of a Lihyanite ruler from Dadan (fifth to the third centuries B.C.), votive figurine fragments left by pilgrims at Umm Daraj and Jabal Dadan, and a 2,000-year-old Nabataean silk fragment discovered in a monumental tomb. A silver 鈥渟ela鈥 coin from Petra depicting Nabataean King Aretas IV and Queen Huldu is among several ancient coins featured.

The collection also includes 10 Chinese artifacts, such as camel figurines, incense burners and cosmetic items, displayed to highlight parallels between the two regions. Both AlUla and Henan are home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the exhibition underlines shared legacies in trade, writing and cultural exchange dating back to the first millennium B.C.

While direct contact between the North Arabian kingdoms and ancient Chinese dynasties has not been proven, organizers say the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the interconnected histories of two civilizations that once stood at the crossroads of global exchange.

Samar Maakaroun on creating brands in a multilingual, multicultural world 聽

DUBAI: British Lebanese typography designer and creative director Samar Maakaroun is known for her multilingual approach to design.

This week, Maakaroun is speaking at the Innovation by Design Summit in Doha, hosted by sustainable property developer Msheireb Properties.

Maakaroun, the founder of design agency Right to Left, and her team were the minds behind the brand identity of last week鈥檚 seminal Together for Palestine charity concert in London.

On the night, celebrities from around the world gathered to raise funds for Palestinian-led organizations including Taawon, the Palestine Children鈥檚 Relief Fund and the Palestine Medical Relief Service.

鈥淚 couldn't approach this with like, 鈥極K, I'm going to, you know, do something super slick,鈥 because it鈥檚 just not right,鈥 she said, noting that when it came to designing posters for the event 鈥渢his is not about who鈥檚 singing on that day 鈥 this is about making space for people to feel safe.鈥

The agency eventually settled on a powerful poster that featured negative space.

鈥淛ust black and white, cheap to print, maximizing fundraising efforts and sort of saying that this is a time to create space. Everybody feels very strongly about this so the white space was used to hold people鈥檚 feelings and emotions on this.鈥

Maakaroun, who is fluent in three languages, is also a partner at leading international design firm Pentagram, which was founded in 1972.

鈥淚 have come across projects that sort of have a foot in the Arab world, a foot in the Latin word, English or French,鈥 Maakaroun said of her 20-year career.

鈥淭he issue when you have a second language is typically what people do in the GCC, is they create an English version, an Arabic version, and the bilingual version. What that means is you end up with three faces for one brand 鈥 so that鈥檚 not efficient,鈥 she said.

鈥淔or me it鈥檚 important to actually create brands that represent  this hybridity in people,鈥 she said.

鈥淭he purpose in every project that I do is to end up with one mark because that鈥檚 more efficient, that鈥檚 ownable and that is more memorable,鈥 she added, referring to a 鈥渕ark,鈥 or one of three types of brands or logos found in brand identity creation.

Working from a dual perspective is a key part of her creation and ideation process 鈥 鈥渢ypically some GCC clients come to the UK to do a brand identity, they work with a company that鈥檚 only English-speaking people, start designing (in) English and then the Arabic version ends up being a translation of the concept that perhaps works in English, (but) doesn鈥檛 work in Arabic, (because) the letters are completely different,鈥 she said.

Maakaroun counts coining the first integrated destination brand for Dubai with M&C Saatchi in 2015 as part of her portfolio of projects in the Gulf region. She also launched Apple鈥檚 brand in Arabic across digital, retail and print in 2017 and was part of the process of launching 黑料社区鈥檚 Diriyah City brand in 2019.

鈥淲hen we create brand identities, we鈥檙e telling stories about who we are as people and what matters to us and what represents us 鈥 and for me, the key driver in my work is about representation.鈥

It is perhaps fitting then that Maakaroun took to the stage in Doha to discuss 鈥淭he Language of Identity,鈥 where she discussed what it means to work across several languages and cultures in her practice.

鈥楲ove is Blind Habibi鈥 earns International Emmy nomination

DUBAI: Netflix鈥檚 UAE-based reality show 鈥淟ove is Blind Habibi鈥 has been nominated for an International Emmy Award.

The fan favorite is competing in the non-scripted entertainment category, according to the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The nomination comes less than a year after the show鈥檚 global release, marking the first time the hit dating format was adapted for Arabic-speaking audiences.

鈥淟ove is Blind Habibi鈥 centers around men and women hoping to get engaged and married, with one twist: They have never met their prospective partner in person and have only communicated through a wall.

This approach seeks to prioritize personality over physical appearance, with couples building a connection before meeting face to face.

In season one of 鈥淟ove is Blind, Habibi鈥 three couples became engaged. However, only one 鈥 Safa and Mohammed 鈥 made it down the aisle and tied the knot.

The first season of the US original earned a nomination in 2020.

Jennifer Lawrence speaks out on Gaza

DUBAI: Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence addressed the situation in Gaza during a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain this week, describing it as 鈥渘o less than a genocide.鈥

Lawrence, in town to present her new film 鈥淒ie My Love鈥 and to receive the Donostia Award, faced repeated questions about the conflict.

鈥淚鈥檓 terrified and it鈥檚 mortifying,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat鈥檚 happening is no less than a genocide and it鈥檚 unacceptable. I鈥檓 terrified for my children, for all of our children.

鈥淚 mean, the kids who are voting right now at 18, it鈥檚 going to be totally normal to them that politics has no integrity. Politicians lie, there is no empathy,鈥 she added. 鈥淎nd everybody needs to remember that when you ignore what鈥檚 happening on one side of the world, it won鈥檛 be long until it鈥檚 on your side as well.鈥

Lawrence also told journalists that it should not fall on artists to solve the world鈥檚 political problems.

鈥淚 wish that there was something I could say, something that I could do to fix this extremely complex and disgraceful situation. It breaks my heart,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut the reality is, our fear in speaking too much or answering too many of these questions is that my words will just be used to add more fire and rhetoric to something that is in the hands of our elected officials.

鈥淚 just want people to stay focused on who is responsible and the things that they can do and when they need to show up and vote, and not let the actors and the artists who are trying to express freedom of art, freedom of speech take the heat for the individuals that are actually responsible,鈥 she added.
