Club Championship finals set for second weekend of Esports World Cup in Riyadh
  • Saudi鈥檚 Team Falcons could end the weekend in first place, with rosters competing in 4 competitions

RIYADH: As the second weekend of the Esports World Cup finals in Riyadh beckons, the Club Championship has already started to take shape.

So far Gen.G Esports, Team Heretics, DetonatioN FocusMe, BMW M Team Redline, Red Bull Sim Racing and VK GAMING are the sides out in front, each with 1,000 Club points.

However, their positions could still come under threat in the coming days. 黑料社区鈥檚 Team Falcons might end the weekend in first place, with rosters competing in multiple games in the coming days.

But with Gen.G a firm favorite in League of Legends, they too are in a strong position to stand alone at the top of the table come Monday. With plenty more Club Championship points on offer, it is still anyone鈥檚 game.

League of Legends

One of the biggest titles to take place during the EWC is underway, and an incredible knockout competition is expected.

The first day of League of Legends action had two sides head home: North American Cloud9 and Vietnamese team GAM Esports.

While many teams have clawed their way through to the knockout stage, 2024 Esports World Cup Champions T1 will join the fray on July 18 to defend their title, and truly test the mettle of their rivals.

Aside from T1, the only side that finished in the top four in last year鈥檚 competition and is represented this year is Europe鈥檚 G2 Esports. The League of Legends EMEA Championship team secured a spot in the knockout stage after a 2-0 finish on day one.

With some exciting matchups ahead of the final this weekend, there are many upsets expected.

Dota 2

Dota 2鈥檚 epic two weeks of action finally conclude this weekend with a $3 million prize pool on the line.

Team Spirit and PVISION are locked in for the semifinals after victories in the quarterfinals, with more teams set to join them in the coming days. But some big names are already eliminated.

The 2024 champions Gaimin Gladiators have fallen in fifth to eighth place, meaning a new champion will be crowned in 2025. And with all the top seeded teams qualifying for the playoffs, the title race is wide open.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women鈥檚 Invitational

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women鈥檚 Invitational concludes this week on July 19.

At the end of play on July 16, Team Liquid, Natus Vincere PH, ONIC Pertiwi Team, and Team Vitality have secured their slots in the playoffs. With just two days of competition, things are moving fast, with eight sides knocked out.

Now in its second year as a part of the EWC roster, the MLBB MWI features a $500,000 prize pool and presents a truly massive stage for women stars.

Team Vitality have been the most impressive, not dropping a single game so far. They also set a record for the fastest game in MWI history with 9 minutes, 38 seconds, but NAVI topped them by 1 second a few days later.

Free Fire

Mobile title Free Fire at the 2025 Esports World Cup kicked off with six fast-paced maps, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a wide-open fight for the championship.

After day one, Team Falcons lead the standings with the Thai roster showcasing dominance, but a resurgence from the Brazilian teams including paiN Gaming and Fluxo mean everything is still in play.

However, as with Apex Legends in week one, anything can happen when it comes to battle royale titles and one good day is not enough to secure a trophy.

With the action closing on July 20, there is plenty of time for more surprises and upsets. And with Free Fire players known for their brash antics, there could be some drama in the closing stages.

Racist chants on the rise at Israeli football matches
  • Report finds 367 incidents of racism last season, up 67% from previous year
  • UK police cited prospect of 鈥榬acist taunts鈥 in banning Maccabi fans from game against Aston Villa

LONDON: Racist chanting by football fans in Israel has increased significantly, according to research conducted by an anti-racism group.

Kick It Out Israel, backed by civil society group Givat Haviva 鈥 which works toward a 鈥渟hared society for Jews and Arabs鈥 鈥 singled out fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv in particular for their behavior.

In all, 367 instances of racist chanting were identified at Israeli Premier League matches in the 2024-25 season, a 67 percent increase on the previous year.

Maccabi fans were responsible for 118 of those incidents, most notably for repeated use of the chant 鈥淟et the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) win, f鈥 the Arabs.鈥

The chant caused international controversy when sung by Maccabi fans during a game marred by violence against Dutch club Ajax in 2024, which saw 60 people arrested.

Fans of Beitar Jerusalem were responsible for the second-highest number of racist chants, with 115 incidents highlighted.

The behavior of Maccabi fans during the Ajax fixture was at the heart of a recent decision to ban them from traveling to the English city of Birmingham for a Europa league match again Aston Villa later this year.

West Midlands Police cited the prospect of 鈥渞acist taunts鈥 as a potential source of trouble in explaining their decision.

In addition to racist chanting at IPL matches, Kick It Out identified 165 violent incidents last season, including objects being thrown and pitch invasions.

Matan Segal, director of Kick It Out Israel, said the IPL season would 鈥渂e remembered not for the football itself but for a series of troubling events that should concern every citizen in Israel,鈥 and that there was an 鈥渁bsence of a serious and effective effort to combat these phenomena.鈥

Piara Powar, executive director of the Fare network 鈥 which focuses on monitoring racism at football matches in Europe 鈥 said the trend in Israel deviated from European leagues, where racism is on the decline.

FairSquare, a group that pushes for the upholding of human rights in sport, wrote to UEFA 鈥 European football鈥檚 governing body 鈥 this week demanding that the Israel Football Association be suspended for breaching Article 7 of UEFA鈥檚 statutes requiring members to 鈥渋mplement an effective policy aimed at eradicating racism and any other forms of discrimination.鈥

UEFA had been expected to suspend the IFA before the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this month, but FairSquare said Kick It Out鈥檚 report 鈥減rovides clear grounds for UEFA to act and suspend the IFA.鈥

Fleetwood and Lowry confirmed for Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship return

Fleetwood and Lowry confirmed for Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship return
  • Duo will join Rory McIlroy for the opening event of the DP World Tour Play-Offs on Yas Island in November

ABU DHABI: European Ryder Cup heroes Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry are the latest stars confirmed for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship from Nov. 6 to 9 at Yas Links.

The duo will join reigning Masters champion and career grand slam winner Rory McIlroy 鈥 along with fellow 2025 Ryder Cup stars Ludvig Aberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Hojgaard, Robert MacIntyre, and vice captain Alex Noren 鈥 for the opening event of the DP World Tour Play-Offs.

World No. 5 Fleetwood, an Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship winner in 2017 and 2018, heads to the UAE in spectacular form. Last week at the DP World India Championship, he fired a sublime final round 65 to secure a two-stroke triumph over Keita Nakajima for an eighth DP World Tour title.

The 34-year-old has enjoyed a career-defining season, highlighted by his emotional maiden PGA TOUR victory at the TOUR Championship in August, where he also claimed the FedExCup.

In doing so, Fleetwood became only the second Englishman to capture the season-long trophy, following in the footsteps of Justin Rose.

At the Ryder Cup, Fleetwood was the standout performer in Europe鈥檚 historic 15-13 victory over the US, marking the first time an away team has won the event since 2012.

Fleetwood delivered when it mattered most, winning four matches with just one defeat across all five sessions, finishing the week as the leading points scorer in the biennial contest.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always special to play at home in the UAE, and the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is a tournament I look forward to every year,鈥 said Fleetwood, who has lived in Dubai since 2022.

鈥淵as Links is a great golf course and the atmosphere is always incredible. I鈥檝e had some great memories here over the years, and starting the DP World Tour Play-Offs in front of family and friends gives me that extra bit of motivation to finish the season on a high.鈥

Lowry sparked emotional scenes at Bethpage Black as the Irishman secured the vital half-point to retain the Ryder Cup for Europe on a tense Sunday singles session.

The 38-year-old is no stranger to success in the UAE.

He lifted the Falcon Trophy in 2019 with his win at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which proved the springboard to one of the greatest years of his professional career that included winning the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Lowry鈥檚 inclusion on Luke Donald鈥檚 historic European Ryder Cup team has secured his spot in the penultimate Rolex Series event of the season, with 2025 Ryder Cup players exempt and included in the field, in addition to the leading 70 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings.

鈥淎bu Dhabi has always been a great place to play golf and I鈥檓 really looking forward to being back at Yas Links in a few weeks,鈥 said Lowry.

鈥淭he DP World Tour Play-Offs are always an exciting end to our season and it鈥檚 great to have the opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the world. I鈥檒l be giving it everything to finish the year on a high.鈥

Staged by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the DP World Tour, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is the first event of the tour鈥檚 end of season showpiece. This event leads straight into the DP World Tour Championship where the Race to Dubai champion will be crowned.

The top 70 available players on the Race to Dubai will battle it out at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which returns for its 20th edition in 2025. The top 50 qualify for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the following week.

American guard Rejean 鈥楤oogie鈥 Ellis signs for Dubai Basketball
  • 24-year-old joins from Alba Berlin on a contract that runs until 2027

DUBAI: Dubai Basketball and Alba Berlin have agreed on the transfer of American guard Rejean 鈥淏oogie鈥 Ellis. He will join the Dubai team for the rest of the 2025-2026 season with his contract running through 2027.

The 24-year-old comes after starting the season in Germany. Before that, he had a strong college career at Memphis and the University of Southern California, and played in the NBA G League, where he became known as a consistent scorer and reliable backcourt player.

Ellis, who is 1.88 meters tall, is a quick and explosive combo guard with strong scoring skills and the ability to create his own shot. At Alba Berlin he made an impact in international competitions, often scoring in double figures.

鈥淏oogie fits perfectly with our vision 鈥 young, hungry, competitive and already tested at a high level,鈥 said general manager Dejan Kamenjasevic. 鈥淗e brings immediate impact, creativity, and pace to our backcourt, helping us get through difficult moments when multiple players are sidelined with injuries.

鈥淗e was somewhat under the radar, and we believe players like him can truly make a difference in European basketball. He has the capacity to grow alongside our core and elevate the team鈥檚 identity in the coming years.鈥

On his move to the Middle East Ellis said: 鈥淒ubai is building something exciting on a global stage, and I want to be part of that journey. I鈥檓 ready to give everything for this team and connect with the fans from Day 1.鈥

Dubai Basketball will face Partizan Belgrade for the second time this season after a monumental win in their EuroLeague debut.

Following a two-week away stint, Dubai return to home soil to compete against the Serbian giants 鈥 this time in the ABA League 鈥 on Nov. 3 at Coca-Cola Arena.

  • Philadelphia鈥檚 third overall draft pick VJ Edgecombe made a stellar NBA debut, scoring 34 points with seven rebounds and three assists in the 76ers鈥 117-116 victory over the Celtics in Bosto

LOS ANGELES: Victor Wembanyama scored 40 points in a sensational NBA return on Wednesday, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 125-92 season-opening victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The 21-year-old French star hadn鈥檛 played since he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder that required surgery in February.

But he launched his third season with a dazzling display on both ends of the floor, adding 15 rebounds, a steal and three blocked shots.

Already known for his combination of size and agility, Wembanyama showed off new strength and was virtually unstoppable at the rim.

He connected on 15 of his 21 attempts, including seven of eight in the second half.

鈥淎ll dreams are allowed now,鈥 he told broadcaster ESPN. 鈥淚鈥檓 just glad to be back.鈥

He set a new Spurs franchise record for most points in a season opener, dominating his matchup with Dallas forward Anthony Davis, who led the Mavs with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

San Antonio鈥檚 Stephon Castle, who followed in Wembanyama鈥檚 footsteps in winning Rookie of the Year honors last season, added 22 points.

But it was a sometimes rocky NBA debut for Dallas鈥檚 18-year-old No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg, who had zero first-half points but finished with a respectable double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Edgecombe shines

Philadelphia鈥檚 third overall draft pick VJ Edgecombe made a stellar NBA debut, scoring 34 points with seven rebounds and three assists in the 76ers鈥 117-116 victory over the Celtics in Boston.

Edgecombe鈥檚 points were the most in an NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain鈥檚 43 in 1959 and the third-most in a debut game ever.

He broke Allen Iverson鈥檚 franchise record for points in a debut of 30, his 14 first-quarter points breaking a record of 12 set by LeBron James in his debut game in 2003.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just having confidence,鈥 Edgecombe told NBC Sports Philadelphia. 鈥淢y teammates keep passing me the ball, telling me to shoot it, so why not?鈥

Edgecombe鈥檚 heroics, coupled with 40 points from Tyrese Maxey, helped the 76ers erase a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit.

The Celtics, with Jaylen Brown and Derrick White the only remaining starters from last season鈥檚 61-win team as Jayson Tatum recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon, had a final chance to seal the win but Payton Pritchard鈥檚 jump shot didn鈥檛 fall.

Philadelphia鈥檚 oft-injured big man Joel Embiid, limited to 19 games last season, scored four points in just over 20 minutes on court.

The New York Knicks opened the season under new coach Mike Brown with a 119-111 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in a battle of teams expected to contend for the Eastern Conference title.

OG Anunoby scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Jalen Brunson scored 23.

Donovan Mitchell scored 21 of his 31 points in the third quarter as the Cavs erased a 15-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead.

But the Cavs, who had the best record in the East last season but fell to the Indiana Pacers in the conference semifinals, couldn鈥檛 keep the pressure on as they felt the absences of injured Darius Garland and Max Strus.
