As 黑料社区 makes progress on Vision 2030, a defining opportunity is emerging: to transform how its cities are powered, cooled and sustained through one of the most promising yet underutilized renewable resources 鈥 geothermal energy.

By tapping into the natural heat beneath our feet, the Kingdom can unlock a greener, healthier and more resilient future 鈥 one that not only reduces emissions but also supports thriving, livable urban environments.

The global shift toward clean energy is well underway. Today, renewable resources generate nearly 30 percent of electricity worldwide 鈥 a share expected to exceed 50 percent by 2040.

Geothermal energy, with its round-the-clock reliability and minimal land footprint, is gaining recognition as a vital part of the transition.

More than 16 gigawatts of geothermal capacity 鈥 roughly equal to the electricity demand of the Netherlands or the Philippines 鈥 is already in operation globally. With the right policies and investment, this figure could grow fiftyfold by mid-century.

Unlike solar or wind, geothermal is a baseload energy source, producing constant, steady output day and night, regardless of the weather. This makes it especially valuable in the Gulf, where high electricity demand, particularly for cooling, coincides with high outdoor temperatures and energy-intensive urban growth.

In 黑料社区, cooling can account for up to 70 percent of daily electricity consumption, most of it currently met by natural gas. Geothermal-powered district cooling offers a clean, efficient and cost-effective solution to ease pressure on gas supplies, lower emissions and improve long-term energy security.

This is not an abstract concept. In China, Arctic Green Energy鈥檚 joint venture with Sinopec 鈥 Sinopec Green Energy 鈥 has built the world鈥檚 largest geothermal heating and cooling network, covering 85 million sq. meters of residential area and serving more than 3 million people.

The company manages 40 percent of the world鈥檚 deep geothermal wells and has shown that geothermal can be scaled up profitably, providing affordable energy while delivering substantial environmental benefits.

With expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, and energy infrastructure, the Kingdom holds a strong foundation for geothermal development.

The model has proven particularly effective in high-density urban areas 鈥 similar to those rapidly expanding across the Gulf.

黑料社区 is now well positioned to replicate and localize this success. With expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering and energy infrastructure, the Kingdom has a strong foundation for geothermal development.

Up to 80 percent of geothermal project investment overlaps with technologies and skills already standard in the oil and gas sector, offering a natural pathway for industry diversification and workforce transition. Existing infrastructure can be repurposed to reduce both cost and time to deployment.

But the opportunity goes beyond cities and utilities. In regions like AlUla and NEOM, geothermal energy can support unique, place-based developments aligned with the Kingdom鈥檚 tourism and sustainability goals.

In AlUla, for example, geothermal-powered wellness sanctuaries could create low-impact luxury destinations that draw on both ancient healing traditions and modern design 鈥 similar to the geothermal spas that have become key attractions in Iceland for both visitors and locals.

In NEOM, geothermal systems could serve as a backbone for integrated clean energy infrastructure 鈥 delivering not only cooling and heating, but also desalinated water, electricity and support for data hosting centers.

Similar systems are already being deployed in China, where a single geothermal well can now support multiple outputs, including heat, power and helium extraction, creating diversified revenue streams and maximizing asset value.

To realize this potential, continued collaboration will be essential. A supportive regulatory framework, access to project finance and targeted investment in building local capacity will help scale geothermal across the Kingdom and beyond.

Geothermal energy offers more than an environmental solution. It offers a commercial, scalable and regionally adapted path to economic diversification, industrial innovation and energy resilience 鈥 pillars at the heart of Vision 2030.

As the Kingdom looks to chart a sustainable and prosperous future, geothermal should play a central role in that story.

Wimbledon champions Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek get off to good starts at US Open
  • By the looks of things on Tuesday in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the two players who triumphed at the All England Club last month look ready to contend again in New York
  • Either Sinner or Alcaraz, who have combined to win the past seven major titles, can own the top ATP ranking after these 15 days
  • Swiatek, Coco Gauff or No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, can leave New York atop the WTA

NEW YORK: Iga Swiatek is trying to do something no woman has done since Serena Williams in 2012: win the US Open and Wimbledon in the same season.

Jannik Sinner is trying to do something no man has done since Roger Federer in 2008: repeat as US Open champion.

By the looks of things on Tuesday in Arthur Ashe Stadium as the now-three-day first round wrapped up, the two players who triumphed at the All England Club last month 鈥 and who both served short doping-related bans last year 鈥 look ready to contend again in New York. And how.

The second-seeded Swiatek was up first in the US Open鈥檚 main arena and needed merely an hour to dismiss Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-1, 6-2. No. 1 Sinner then took only 39 minutes more to finish off his 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic.

鈥淥bviously, every year is different,鈥 said Sinner, sporting the white arm sleeve he began wearing after hurting his elbow in a fall during Wimbledon. 鈥淵ou come here starting this tournament, hopefully, the best possible way 鈥 which I did.鈥

He certainly showed no signs of the virus that forced him to quit in the first set of the Cincinnati Open final against his biggest rival, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, last week.

Either Sinner or Alcaraz, who have combined to win the past seven major titles, can own the top ATP ranking after these 15 days. Similarly, Swiatek, Coco Gauff or No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, can leave New York atop the WTA.

On Tuesday, Sinner saved both break points he faced and won 33 of 40 first-serve points.

Swiatek was even more dominant, not only never facing a break point but never even being taken to deuce in any of her eight service games, while accumulating a 26-5 edge in winners.

There was a time when some folks, perhaps swayed by Swiatek鈥檚 dominance on the French Open鈥檚 red clay, thought she couldn鈥檛 succeed on the speedier surfaces of hard and grass courts. That certainly was not the case, as her championships at Wimbledon in July and at the US Open in 2022 make obvious.

Ten women have split the past 11 trophies in New York; only Naomi Osaka, in 2018 and 2020, won more than one in that span. And Williams, with three in a row from 2012 to 2014, was the last woman to leave as the champion in consecutive years.

As for the men, no one has collected two in a row at the US Open since Federer鈥檚 five straight titles from 2004 to 2008, before he lost in the 2009 final to Juan Martin del Potro.

Sinner was asked why that might be.

鈥淲e are heading toward end of the season, so some players, they are tired. Some players, they are feeling different. Many things can change. It鈥檚 also the last big trophy of the year. ... I always say that the future is unpredictable,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o I don鈥檛 know what鈥檚 going to happen this time.鈥

What else happened at the US Open on Tuesday?

Seeded winners included No. 8 Amanda Anisimova, the Wimbledon runner-up to Swiatek; No. 18 Beatriz Haddad Maia and No. 27 Marta Kostyuk among the women, and No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti, No. 19 Francisco Cerundolo, No. 23 Alexander Bublik 鈥 who eliminated 2014 champion Marin Cilic 鈥 and No. 27 Denis Shapovalov among the men. No. 3 Gauff, who won the 2023 US Open, was due on court at night to play Ajla Tomljanovic, followed by No. 3 Alexander Zverev against Alejandro Tabilo.

Who is scheduled to play Wednesday at Flushing Meadows?

Sabalenka, Alcaraz, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and 2024 US Open runner-up Jessica Pegula are on the Day 4 schedule as the second round begins.

  • Wolves win cup battle of Premier League鈥檚 bottom two
  • Troubled Sheffield Wednesday beat Leeds on penalties
  • Sunderland lose to third tier Huddersfield Town

WOLVERHAMPTON, England: Substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice in two minutes as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat fellow Premier League strugglers West Ham United 3-2 to reach the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Promoted Leeds United and Sunderland followed West Ham out of the competition, losing on penalties to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday and third tier Huddersfield Town respectively.

Strand Larsen came on in the 73rd minute and made an immediate impact, the Norwegian striking in the 82nd and 84th to turn around the match at Molineux after Lucas Paqueta had headed West Ham in front in the 63rd.

Rodrigo Gomes had scored Wolves鈥 first goal of the season two minutes before halftime, after Hwang Hee-chan鈥檚 penalty rebounded off the post, but Tomas Soucek headed an equalizer in the 50th.

The battle between the top flight鈥檚 bottom two teams provided no respite for West Ham manager Graham Potter, whose side have been thrashed 5-1 by Chelsea and 3-0 by Sunderland in the league.

Leeds went out 3-0 on penalties after fulltime at Hillsborough ended 1-1, a shock result watched from afar by many Wednesday fans who boycotted the match in protest at the financially-troubled second-tier club鈥檚 Thai owner.

US international goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was the home hero, the man of the match mobbed by his teammates after saving twice and keeping a clean sheet in the shootout on his debut after joining on loan.

鈥淚 have been in the door four or five days. I had to learn 10 new names in the first match I played and in this game I had to learn another 10 new names,鈥 Horvath told Sky Sports television.

League One Huddersfield won their shootout 6-5 after regulation time at the Stadium of Light ended 1-1.

Brentford beat Bournemouth 2-0 on the South Coast in the night鈥檚 other all-Premier League match, with Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago scoring either side of the break and against the run of play.

Brentford鈥檚 record signing Dango Ouattara, who scored on his league debut on Saturday, came on as a substitute against his old club.

Burnley, one of seven Premier League sides fielding much changed lineups from last weekend鈥檚 games, beat second tier Derby County 2-1 with Oliver Sonne scoring a stoppage-time winner at Turf Moor.

Wrexham鈥檚 Hollywood owners had plenty to smile about after their side won 3-2 at Preston North End thanks to a stoppage-time Kieffer Moore goal after the hosts had twice taken the lead in the second tier clash.

League Two (fourth tier) Cambridge United beat Championship side Charlton Athletic 3-1.

The third round draw will take place after Wednesday鈥檚 matches.

REDMOND, Washington: Police arrested seven people Tuesday after they occupied the office of Microsoft President Brad Smith as part of continued protests over the company鈥檚 ties to the Israel Defense Forces during the ongoing war in Gaza, organizers said.
Current and former Microsoft employees were among those arrested, said the protest group No Azure for Apartheid. Azure is Microsoft鈥檚 primary cloud computing platform, and Microsoft has said it is reviewing a report in a British newspaper this month that Israel has used it to facilitate attacks on Palestinian targets.
The protesters could be seen huddled together on a Twitch livestream as officers moved in to arrest them. The video showed another group assembled outside.
During a media briefing Tuesday afternoon, Smith said two of those arrested were Microsoft employees.
Eighteen people were arrested in a similar protest in a plaza at the headquarters last week. The group has been protesting the company for months. Microsoft in May fired an employee who interrupted a speech by CEO Satya Nadella, and in April it fired two others who interrupted the company鈥檚 50th anniversary celebration.
The group鈥檚 demands include that the company cut ties with Israel and pay reparations to Palestinians.
The British newspaper The Guardian reported this month that the Israel Defense Forces had used Microsoft鈥檚 Azure cloud computing platform to store phone call data obtained through the mass surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Microsoft has said it hired an outside law firm to investigate the allegations, but that its terms of service would prohibit such use.
鈥淭here are many things we can鈥檛 do to change the world, but we will do what we can and what we should,鈥 Smith told reporters at a media briefing following Tuesday鈥檚 arrests. 鈥淭hat starts with ensuring that our human rights principles and contractual terms of service are upheld everywhere, by all of our customers around the world.鈥
Earlier this year, The Associated Press revealed previously unreported details about Microsoft鈥檚 close partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, which uses Azure to transcribe, translate and process intelligence gathered through mass surveillance. The AP reported that the data can be cross-checked with Israel鈥檚 in-house, AI-enabled systems to help select targets.
Following The AP鈥檚 report, Microsoft said a review found no evidence that its Azure platform and artificial intelligence technologies were used to target or harm people in Gaza. Microsoft did not share a copy of that review, but the company said it would share factual findings from the further review prompted by The Guardian鈥檚 report when complete.
In the statement Tuesday, the protest groups said the disruptions were 鈥渢o protest Microsoft鈥檚 active role in the genocide of Palestinians.鈥

German Cup holders Stuttgart beat Braunschweig on penalties

BERLIN: Holders Stuttgart won a dramatic 8-7 penalty shoot-out in the first round of the German Cup on Tuesday after twice having to come from behind against second tier Braunschweig in a chaotic 4-4 draw.
Lorenz Assignon scored the decisive spot kick after Stuttgart goalie Alexander Nuebel saved three times in the shoot-out, keeping the struggling title holders in the competition.
Stuttgart have stumbled into this season, losing the German Super Cup 2-1 at home against Bayern Munich before going down by the same scoreline at Union Berlin in their league opener.
Stuttgart were down after just eight minutes when Sven Koehler opened the scoring with a long-range effort, but drew level just three minutes later when Ermedin Demirovic scored his first.
Demirovic looked to have Stuttgart on track when he scored another with 60 minutes played, but Braunschweig鈥檚 Fabio Di Michele Sanchez scored in the 77th and 85th minutes to grab hold of the game.
Stuttgart鈥檚 Nick Woltemade levelled things up in the final minute of regulation time, taking the game into extra-time. Both sides scored in extra time, with Sanoussy Ba鈥檚 own goal giving Stuttgart the advantage before Christian Joe Conteh tied it up at 4-4 to send the match to penalties.
Both sides missed twice in the opening set of five penalties but then matched each other before Nuebel leapt to his left, saving Lukas Frenkert鈥檚 shot.
Assignon converted, sending the four-time winners into the next round of the competition.

Hamas challenges Israeli account of Gaza hospital casualties
  • The Israel-Hamas war has been one of the bloodiest conflicts for media workers, with 189 Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli fire in Gaza in 22 months of fighting, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists

GAZA CITY: Hamas denied on Tuesday that any of the Palestinians killed in Israel鈥檚 attack on Gaza鈥檚 Nasser hospital on Monday were militants.
Earlier, Israel said it had killed six militants in the attack but it was investigating how civilians, including five journalists, were killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as a 鈥渢ragic mishap.鈥
The Hamas government media office said in a statement that one of the six Palestinians who Israel alleged were militants was killed in Al-Mawasi some distance from the hospital, and another was killed elsewhere at a different time.
The Hamas statement did not clarify whether the two who were killed elsewhere were also civilians.
