As 黑料社区 makes progress on Vision 2030, a defining opportunity is emerging: to transform how its cities are powered, cooled and sustained through one of the most promising yet underutilized renewable resources 鈥 geothermal energy.

By tapping into the natural heat beneath our feet, the Kingdom can unlock a greener, healthier and more resilient future 鈥 one that not only reduces emissions but also supports thriving, livable urban environments.

The global shift toward clean energy is well underway. Today, renewable resources generate nearly 30 percent of electricity worldwide 鈥 a share expected to exceed 50 percent by 2040.

Geothermal energy, with its round-the-clock reliability and minimal land footprint, is gaining recognition as a vital part of the transition.

More than 16 gigawatts of geothermal capacity 鈥 roughly equal to the electricity demand of the Netherlands or the Philippines 鈥 is already in operation globally. With the right policies and investment, this figure could grow fiftyfold by mid-century.

Unlike solar or wind, geothermal is a baseload energy source, producing constant, steady output day and night, regardless of the weather. This makes it especially valuable in the Gulf, where high electricity demand, particularly for cooling, coincides with high outdoor temperatures and energy-intensive urban growth.

In 黑料社区, cooling can account for up to 70 percent of daily electricity consumption, most of it currently met by natural gas. Geothermal-powered district cooling offers a clean, efficient and cost-effective solution to ease pressure on gas supplies, lower emissions and improve long-term energy security.

This is not an abstract concept. In China, Arctic Green Energy鈥檚 joint venture with Sinopec 鈥 Sinopec Green Energy 鈥 has built the world鈥檚 largest geothermal heating and cooling network, covering 85 million sq. meters of residential area and serving more than 3 million people.

The company manages 40 percent of the world鈥檚 deep geothermal wells and has shown that geothermal can be scaled up profitably, providing affordable energy while delivering substantial environmental benefits.

With expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, and energy infrastructure, the Kingdom holds a strong foundation for geothermal development.

The model has proven particularly effective in high-density urban areas 鈥 similar to those rapidly expanding across the Gulf.

黑料社区 is now well positioned to replicate and localize this success. With expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering and energy infrastructure, the Kingdom has a strong foundation for geothermal development.

Up to 80 percent of geothermal project investment overlaps with technologies and skills already standard in the oil and gas sector, offering a natural pathway for industry diversification and workforce transition. Existing infrastructure can be repurposed to reduce both cost and time to deployment.

But the opportunity goes beyond cities and utilities. In regions like AlUla and NEOM, geothermal energy can support unique, place-based developments aligned with the Kingdom鈥檚 tourism and sustainability goals.

In AlUla, for example, geothermal-powered wellness sanctuaries could create low-impact luxury destinations that draw on both ancient healing traditions and modern design 鈥 similar to the geothermal spas that have become key attractions in Iceland for both visitors and locals.

In NEOM, geothermal systems could serve as a backbone for integrated clean energy infrastructure 鈥 delivering not only cooling and heating, but also desalinated water, electricity and support for data hosting centers.

Similar systems are already being deployed in China, where a single geothermal well can now support multiple outputs, including heat, power and helium extraction, creating diversified revenue streams and maximizing asset value.

To realize this potential, continued collaboration will be essential. A supportive regulatory framework, access to project finance and targeted investment in building local capacity will help scale geothermal across the Kingdom and beyond.

Geothermal energy offers more than an environmental solution. It offers a commercial, scalable and regionally adapted path to economic diversification, industrial innovation and energy resilience 鈥 pillars at the heart of Vision 2030.

As the Kingdom looks to chart a sustainable and prosperous future, geothermal should play a central role in that story.

NEW YORK: 黑料社区鈥檚 international efforts to combat sand and dust storms were commended this week during a high-level meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.

The meeting highlighted the Kingdom鈥檚 $10 million commitment over five years to strengthen early warning systems and support countries vulnerable to dust storm impacts.

The initiative, led by 黑料社区 in cooperation with regional centers affiliated with the World Meteorological Organization, was praised for enhancing forecasting and response capabilities.

Jumaan bin Saad Al-Qahtani, deputy CEO of the National Center of Meteorology, emphasized the Kingdom鈥檚 work through Vision 2030 programs such as the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives.

He also noted the establishment of the Regional Center for Dust and Sand Storms in Jeddah as a strategic hub for regional coordination, data exchange, and capacity building.

黑料社区 has hosted major research events, including the First International Conference on Dust and Sand Storms in Riyadh, and plans to hold a second edition in 2026.

Its environmental efforts have resulted in planting over 142 million trees and reclaiming more than 436,000 hectares of degraded land.

Al-Qahtani reaffirmed the Kingdom鈥檚 readiness to expand international partnerships to reduce dust sources, protect the environment, and improve resilience against climate change, SPA added.

Pakistan calls militant presence in Afghanistan a 鈥榗hallenge鈥 amid renewed diplomatic engagement

Pakistan calls militant presence in Afghanistan a 鈥榗hallenge鈥 amid renewed diplomatic engagement
  • Islamabad says cross-border militancy remains key obstacle to improved ties, regional integration
  • The two sides have sought to reset relations after a tripartite meeting with China earlier this year

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan described the presence of militant outfits in Afghanistan as a 鈥渃hallenge鈥 on Friday, calling it a critical hurdle in improving bilateral ties and advancing regional cooperation, even as both countries have tried to re-engage diplomatically in recent months.

Ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained strained since 2023, when Islamabad launched a crackdown on undocumented migrants, mostly Afghans, citing security concerns.

Pakistan has long said militant groups staging attacks in its western border provinces operate from Afghan territory, a claim denied by Taliban officials.

However, the two sides have sought to reset relations recently, agreeing to appoint ambassadors following a tripartite meeting with China and holding additional secretary-level talks in Islamabad earlier this month.

鈥淎bout the question of sanctuaries in Afghanistan, as I mentioned it remains a challenge, and we are trying to address it in the context of bilateral relations with Afghanistan,鈥 foreign office spokesperson, Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, said during his weekly news briefing.

鈥淭his remains a critical impediment in preventing the relations to reach their full potential, and further impeding the full development of regional cooperation, particularly when other regions are moving toward greater regional integration involving businesses, investment, road and rail network,鈥 he added.

Khan said the 鈥渋ssue of sanctuaries鈥 was also discussed by the Afghan authorities in the recent talks.

鈥淲e stay engaged with the Afghan authorities and approach the dialogue with good faith,鈥 he continued. 鈥淚n terms of the commonalities between the two countries, two cultures, it should be the best of relationships. But the core point which you flagged remains sanctuaries enjoyed by the terrorists inside the Afghan territory.鈥

Islamabad has repeatedly urged Kabul to take action against groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it says uses Afghan soil to plan and launch attacks.

The Afghan Taliban, however, have always denied allowing any armed outfits to use their territory to target other countries.

Jannik Sinner mauls Novak Djokovic to reach first Wimbledon final

Jannik Sinner mauls Novak Djokovic to reach first Wimbledon final
LONDON: Jannik Sinner crushed Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon semifinals to set up the latest instalment of his gripping rivalry with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday鈥檚 final.

The world number one is through to his fourth successive Grand Slam title match 鈥 and his first at the All England Club 鈥 after a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 demolition on Center Court on Friday.

The 23-year-old will be desperate to avenge his painful French Open defeat against world number two Alcaraz after squandering three championship points in last month鈥檚 epic Roland Garros final.

Sinner and Alcaraz are the undisputed new kings of men鈥檚 tennis, claiming the past six majors between them.

Defeat on a baking Center Court means seven-time champion Djokovic, who was apparently not 100 percent fit, must wait for another shot at a record 25th Grand Slam title.

It is the first time he has failed to reach the Wimbledon final since 2017 and he has come up short in his bid to equal Roger Federer鈥檚 men鈥檚 record of eight Wimbledon titles.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a tournament I always watched when I was young on the television and I would have never imagined that I can play here, you know in the finals, so it was amazing,鈥 said Sinner.

鈥淔rom my side, I served very well today, I felt great on court, I was moving really well today.

鈥淲e saw in the third set that he was a bit injured. He鈥檚 been in a very difficult situation but I tried to stay calm, to play the best tennis I can.鈥

Italy鈥檚 Sinner was still wearing a white protective sleeve after injuring his elbow in a nasty fall against Grigor Dimitrov in his fourth-round match.

Djokovic also came into the contest, watched by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, with questions over his fitness after tumbling to the turf late in his quarter-final victory against Flavio Cobolli.

Top seed Sinner broke Djokovic in the third game, unleashing a barrage of relentlessly accurate groundstrokes to wear the sixth seed down.

The Serb, 38, wilted under the onslaught in the ninth game as Sinner converted his third set point.

Sinner did not let up at the start of the second set, breaking for a 2-0 lead to tighten his grip on the match.

Djokovic was struggling to gain a foothold but held for 3-1 to roars from the crowd, desperate to witness a classic battle.

Chants of 鈥淣ole鈥 rang around the stadium as fans tried to lift Djokovic but he was powerless to prevent Sinner opening up a 5-2 lead.

He saved a set point on his own serve but that merely delayed the inevitable as Sinner wrapped up the set with only 69 minutes on the clock.

Djokovic received treatment from the trainer between sets on the upper part of his left leg, apparently on the area he hurt in the match against Cobolli.

He broke for the first time in the match as he suddenly found a new gear, but was pegged back to 3-2 and roared in frustration at the changeover.

Struggling physically, Djokovic was broken again as Sinner sealed victory with his fourth match point.

Sinner, the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, returned from a doping ban in May, losing the Italian Open final to Alcaraz before his collapse in the Roland Garros showpiece.

Now he has chance for revenge against the man who has won the past two Wimbledon titles and is the current top dog on grass.

鈥淚t is a huge honor for me to share the court once again with Carlos,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e try to push ourselves to the limit, he is for sure one of the players I look up to.

鈥淚 love watching him, I think you all guys agree on that, what kind of talent he is but hopefully it鈥檚 going to be a good match like the last one.鈥

Sinner trails 8-4 in their head to head meetings, losing the past five matches.

The Italian can take heart from beating Alcaraz in the Wimbledon fourth round in 2022, his rival鈥檚 last defeat at the All England Club.

Pakistan鈥檚 top judicial body sets up committee to examine enforced disappearances
  • The National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee discusses issues to ensure 鈥榗itizen-centric justice delivery鈥
  • The forum also looks into the ethical and policy implications of using generative AI in judicial functions

KARACHI: Pakistan鈥檚 top judicial policy-making forum has set up a body to examine the issue of enforced disappearances, an official statement said on Friday, in a move to address one of the country鈥檚 most persistent human rights challenges.

The decision came during the 53rd meeting of the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee (NJPMC), chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and attended by top judges of all high courts and the additional attorney general in Islamabad.

Enforced disappearances have long been a contentious issue in Pakistan, particularly in regions like Balochistan, where families of missing persons and human rights groups accuse state institutions of arbitrary detentions and extrajudicial killings.

Pakistani authorities have frequently rejected these claims as 鈥渂aseless allegations.鈥

鈥淭he NJPMC took serious notice of the enforced disappearances and unanimously resolved that the judiciary would not compromise on its constitutional duty to safeguard fundamental rights,鈥 said the statement circulated by the Supreme Court after the meeting.

鈥淎 dedicated committee was constituted to formulate an institutional response, after taking into consideration concerns of the Executive, to be communicated through the Attorney General for Pakistan,鈥 it added.

The statement said the forum deliberated on 鈥渒ey policy issues and adopted several significant measures to improve judicial performance, technology integration in judicial processes and citizen-centric justice delivery.鈥

Successive Pakistani governments have promised to look into the issue of enforced disappearances in the country and even set up a commission in 2011 to trace missing persons and fix responsibility for any wrongdoing.

However, rights groups and activists say the issue continues to persist.

The top judicial forum also acknowledged the growing presence of artificial intelligence in legal systems during the meeting and initiated work on a framework for its responsible use.

鈥淭he ethical and policy implications of using generative AI in judicial functions were discussed,鈥 the statement said, adding the National Judicial Automation Committee (NJAC) had been tasked to 鈥渇inalize a comprehensive charter on ethical use of AI in this regard.鈥

While several judicial systems around the world 鈥 including in the United States and the European Union 鈥 have begun exploring AI for research and case management, concerns persist over transparency, bias, and the potential erosion of human judgment in legal decision-making.
