Gonzalo Garcia rewarded his coach’s faith in him with the opening goal to help Real Madrid to a wild-ending 3-2 win against Borussia Dortmund in East Rutherford, N.J. on Saturday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Club World Cup.
Real Madrid will play Paris Saint-Germain in the same city on Wednesday.
With superstar Kylian Mbappe gradually recovering from an illness, coach Xabi Alonso elected to instead start the 21-year-old Garcia and he scored his fourth goal of the Club World Cup in the 10th minute.
Fran Garcia, no relation, made it 2-0 in the 20th.
Then it got crazy. Dortmund’s Max Beier cut the lead in half in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.
Mbappe, who entered in the 67th minute, made it 3-1 in 90+4 with a spectacular side-volley but Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was red-carded in 90+6 for a foul in the box and Serhou Guirassy converted the penalty kick in 90+8.
Dortmund had one final try and Thibaut Courtois made a great full-extension save on Marcel Sabitzer in 90+10.
The match looked fully in hand until a clearance bounced to Beier and he first-timed a strike that brushed Huijsen on the way in to make it 2-1.
Mbappe then did his thing from the left side of the 6-yard box off the second assist of the match for Guler.
Just as Real Madrid was ready to exhale, Huijsen prevented goal-scoring opportunity and Guirassy scored for the third time in two matches.
Huijsen is suspended for the semifinal.
It was left to Courtois with his diving stop at the left corner to finally seal the win.

  • The Argentina international missed some of Liverpool’s preseason preparations when recovering from injury
LIVERPOOL: Alexis Mac Allister will be in Liverpool’s squad for Sunday’s Community Shield match against Crystal Palace.
The Argentina international missed some of Liverpool’s preseason preparations when recovering from injury. But he played in the last two friendlies against Yokohama F. Marinos and Atletico Madrid and will be in contention to play some part of the game against Palace at Wembley, coach Arne Slot said.
“He was out for two months I think, or longer because we didn’t play him in the last four games of the season. He trained with us since a week now, played 30 minutes, 45 minutes,” Slot said Friday. “So that’s not a situation where you would start a player... play him for 90 minutes. Starting is possible but definitely not for 90 minutes.”
The 26-year-old Mac Allister’s last competitive game was against Arsenal on May 11. He missed the Premier League champion’s last two games of the season.
Last month the midfielder said his absence was due to a series of issues, rather than one specific injury.
“It’s hard to explain because it’s not just one spot that you say, ‘OK, we have to focus on this,’” Mac Allister said. “It’s like two or three different things that I’ve been struggling (with) for a couple of months.
“At the end, we found the solution; we have been working a lot in the gym, on my structure.”
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out of the match with a “minor” injury, Slot said.

PARIS: European champions Paris Saint-Germain have reached agreement with Lille to sign highly-rated goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, a source close to the negotiations told AFP on Friday.
The move is likely to pose questions over the future of Italian international ‘keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at PSG.
Donnarumma, who was outstanding in PSG’s 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final in May, is in the final year of his contract and would likely interest Premier League clubs.
Chevalier, 23, will sign a five-year contract and command a fee of around 40 million euros ($46.5 million).
He was nominated on Thursday for this year’s men’s Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or gala after exceptional performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season.
Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Europa League.

ABU DHABI:  The UAE national jiu-jitsu team landed in China on Thursday to take part in the 2025 World Games, hosted in Chengdu from Aug. 7-17.

The UAE team, sponsored by Mubadala Investment Company, will begin its campaign on Aug. 10 when the jiu-jitsu competitions kick off, running through to Aug. 12.

The national team previously participated in the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, winning two medals — one gold and one silver. They delivered a strong showing again at the 2022 event in Birmingham, the US, securing five medals: Two gold, one silver and two bronze.

The 2025 event will bring together nearly 5,000 athletes from 118 countries competing across 34 sports, making it one of the most prominent international sporting events.

Mubarak Saleh Al-Menhali, director of the technical department at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, or UAEJJF, said that the team was aiming to achieve a new milestone that would further strengthen the UAE’s position regionally and globally. He said that the current squad featured experienced male and female athletes who had consistently performed at the highest level.

“We are confident our athletes are fully prepared for the championship. They’ve put in a lot of work through both local and overseas training camps, which helped enhance their physical and mental readiness. They also completed intensive technical and fitness sessions to ensure they are in peak condition heading into the competition.”

Former Emirati jiu-jitsu champion, Faisal Al-Ketbi, who is traveling with the team, added: “Our team has a good chance of winning medals at the World Games, especially as they’re currently among the top-ranked. We held a training camp in Brazil before the event, focusing on sharpening technique and improving overall fitness. The team is ready, morale is high, and after winning two gold medals last time, we’re aiming for more this year.”

The men’s team includes Mohammed Al-Suwaidi (69kg), Mehdi Al-Awlaki (77kg) and Saeed Al-Kubaisi (85kg). On the women’s side, the team features Asma Alhosani (52kg), Shamsa Al-Amri (57kg) and Shamma Al-Kalbani (63kg).

Kane hails Son partnership as Premier League’s finest after South Korean’s Spurs exit
  • “Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham,” Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side’s 4-0 friendly win over former club Spurs on Thursday

Harry Kane paid tribute to his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min, describing their partnership as “one of the best” in Premier League history following the South Korean’s departure from the club. Son, who combined with Kane for 47 league goals to form a lethal partnership for the best part of a decade at Spurs, joined Los Angeles FC on a record-breaking Major League Soccer transfer on Wednesday. The 33-year-old South Korea skipper had moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, bagging 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and leading them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May.
“Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham,” Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side’s 4-0 friendly win over former club Spurs on Thursday.
“First and foremost, a great person. I’ve got to know him really well as a friend, and just how humble he is and how good a guy he is.
“I think as a player, you know, we had one of the best partnerships in Premier League history. We just had that connection that we loved.
“It’s a great way for his Tottenham career to end, to lift the trophy last year with the team… and now it’s a new chapter for him, he’ll go to LA, and I wish him all the best, and I hope to see him soon and we can catch up.”
Kane spent most of his career at Spurs after joining their academy as an 11-year-old, scoring a club record 280 goals in over 430 appearances in all competitions. The 32-year-old England captain joined German giants Bayern in August 2023.
