  • Arab News looks at possible ways that Al-Hilal can upset the odds to reach and possibly win the FIFA Club World Cup final

RIYADH: Al-Hilal are the talk of the football world after their sensational 4-3 win over Manchester City in the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ahead of their quarterfinal against Brazil鈥檚 Fluminense on Friday, Arab News asked three experts on 黑料社区 football how Al-Hilal can continue to upset the odds and potentially reach and win the final.

  • Roel Coumans听- Former 黑料社区 national team assistant, head coach of Abha, Al-Hazm, Al-Adalah

鈥淚f Al-Hilal are in any European competition then they would be in the top four and there is no doubt that when Fluminense look at the Hilal team, they will not be underestimating them.

鈥淚n football everything is possible and Hilal can go all the way. I always tell my players to dream big, this is what football is all about.

鈥淏ut it is important that Hilal don鈥檛 look forward too much, the next match is always the important one. There is a chance that after City the players may underestimate Fluminense and that is not possible at this level.

鈥淭hey should involve the Brazilian players who can tell them about Fluminense.

鈥淭he game will be totally different to the City game. In that, they were the underdog and you have to defend much more than against Fluminense.

鈥淲hen I look at Inzaghi鈥檚 tactics, he is always trying to play in a compact 4-5-1 formation and he will ensure that the system is not too different.

鈥淭here is a danger in that South America football is more physical and that may be something that the players are not used to.

鈥淏ut now there is a good vibe around Al-Hilal. If Al-Dawsari can return that will be great as he adds creativity.鈥

  • Paul Williams -聽Founder and host of The Asian Game podcast, football journalist

鈥淎l-Hilal鈥檚 path to the Club World Cup final has certainly opened up after their stunning upset win over Manchester City. It was a landmark moment, not just for the club but for Saudi football.

鈥淲hile the challenge on paper might look easier against Fluminense, it鈥檚 likely to be anything but.

鈥淥ne has to consider the context and circumstances of the victory against Manchester City, which was achieved without three of their starting XI, who will all be absent again against Fluminense.

鈥淣ot to mention the physical and emotional toll that the 120 minutes in Orlando would have taken. But having slayed the Premier League giant, they鈥檒l attack that game with a renewed sense of vigor.

鈥淪hould they get through, then a likely semifinal against Chelsea awaits, although one can never discount Palmeiras. But having beaten one Premier League giant already this tournament, facing Chelsea would hold no fears for them.

鈥淎nd then it would likely be Real Madrid or PSG in the final, and having already gone toe-to-toe with Real Madrid in the opening game, and even shading that game for large parts, that is another that would hold no fear for Al-Hilal.

鈥淥f course, as fun as it is to speculate, it鈥檚 all still hypothetical and Al-Hilal cannot allow itself to think any further than Fluminense this week. Having dispensed of Inter Milan, they have shown they also should not be taken lightly.

鈥淏ut after defeating the might of Manchester City, Al-Hilal will now believe anything is possible.鈥

  • John Duerden -聽Asia and Middle East football writer and analyst

鈥淲hile it is premature to talk of the draw opening up for Al-Hilal, there is no doubt that the road to the final looks rockier on the other side.

鈥淭he biggest challenge may be coming back down to Earth after the win against Manchester City.

鈥淐oach Inzaghi talked of how his team climbed Everest without oxygen against the European powerhouse, and while those words were perfect, the message has to now change.

鈥淭he summit is within sight but is still some distance away.

鈥淗ilal are the talk of the football world, and that is a unique position for an Asian club to be in. Maybe now the pressure is off, the tournament will always be remembered as a success, whatever happens.

鈥淥r maybe it will be hard, both physically (after 120 grueling minutes in the heat) and mentally, to recover from the last game.

鈥淎nd, Fluminense will now be very wary, if they weren鈥檛 before. Inzaghi was happy to let City have most of the ball and City were happy to have it. Hilal were hugely impressive on the counter, but Fluminense are not likely to make the same mistakes that City did defensively.

鈥淜orea鈥檚 Ulsan gave the Brazilian(s) many problems but couldn鈥檛 kill the game when they were ahead and eventually paid the price. Taking chances will be key.

鈥淚f Salem Al-Dawsari plays, then he could be the difference, though Hilal would love to have the physical presence of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

鈥淎 win means the last four and there is nobody to fear. If it is Chelsea in the semifinal then the London team are awkward opponents and able to pull off results when needed but they are a level below the elite of Europe.

鈥淎nd that is Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern. Surely one of those will make the final.

鈥淗ilal have impressed but would, rightly, be clear underdogs. Hilal are not expected to win but they have shown that they are capable of doing so.

鈥淔irst though, that cliche has to be repeated all around the training ground over the next day or two 鈥榦ne game at a time.鈥欌

  • Neves at the heart of the action as Doumbia and Leonardo grab the goals to give the Riyadh side a 2-0 victory that moves them into 3rd place in the league

JEDDAH: Al-Hilal won 2-0 at Al-Ittihad on Friday to silence the reigning champions, reaffirm their title credentials and move into third place in the Saudi Pro League behind Al-Taawoun and early leaders Al-Nassr.

It was a night that pitted two former coaches of Milan鈥檚 great rivals against each other, with the visitors鈥 ex-Inter boss Simone Inzaghi crossing swords with the home side鈥檚 Sergio Conceicao, formerly of AC Milan.

It was a night of spectacle from the start at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, with every seat filled. Before kick-off, Al-Ittihad鈥檚 fans unfurled a huge tifo to greet their team. The noise was fierce, the tension palpable as for the first half-hour the two giants traded blows, each in search of an opening.

Karim Benzema came close for Al-Ittihad but the breakthrough did not come until five minutes before the interval, when Al-Hilal鈥檚 Ruben Neves swung in a curling corner from the left, the ball dipping dangerously into a packed six-yard box. Amid the chaos, it was Mahamadou Doumbia who got the final touch 鈥 an unfortunate header that flew into his own net.

As Al-Ittihad battled to find a response after the break, Al-Hilal struck again in the 57th minute. Neves, again at the heart of everything, unleashed a fierce, long-range shot that goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti could only parry. Marcos Leonardo was quickest to react, slotting the rebound into the net from close range and turning the visitors鈥 control into comfort. The damage was done.

A few minutes from the end, Darwin Nunez once again had the ball in the Al-Ittihad net but the former Liverpool forward鈥檚 strike was ruled out for offside.

It didn鈥檛 matter. Al-Hilal鈥檚 composure, experience and precision were simply too much for the home side and the final whistle signaled a statement victory in a high-voltage rivalry that might yet define the course of the season ahead.

For now, though, Al-Hilal take the three points home to Riyadh, and at this early stage the title race is wide open.

  • The 1-0 win leaves the Jeddah club with 12 points from 6 matches

RIYADH: Al-Ahli on Thursday night defeated hosts and newly promoted Al-Najma 1-0 in Buraidah to climb to fourth in the Saudi Pro League table, with the rest of the sixth round of matches still to come this weekend.

The win leaves the Jeddah club with 12 points from six matches, and three behind leaders Al-Nassr, who have played one less match. Al-Najma remain bottom of the table with no points.

黑料社区 forward Firas Al-Buraikan scored in the 34th minute to secure all three points at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.

Ivorian international midfielder Franck Kessie looked to have doubled the lead seven minutes into the second half but the goal was chalked off by VAR.

In Thursday鈥檚 other SPL matches, Al-Riyadh defeated Al-Kholood 1-0 at home, while Al-Fayha were beaten 2-1 by visitors Al-Taawoun.

  • 3-1 win victory in Riyadh means they are the only club in the competition with a perfect record after 3 group stage games

RIYADH: Al-Hilal remain top of Group B in the AFC Champions League Elite after a 3-1 home victory over Al-Sadd of Qatar at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on Tuesday night.

The result means they are the only club in the 24-team competition with a 100 percent record of nine points from their opening three matches.

A 4-0 win over Al-Gharafa on Monday night leaves fellow Saudi side Al-Ahli, the reigning champions, in second place on seven points, while the remaining Saudi participants, Pro League champions Al-Ittihad, are in seventh place after beating Al-Shorta of Iraq 4-1 in Baghdad, also on Monday, to pick up their first points of the campaign.

Al-Hilal took the lead on 25 minutes through Turkish international defender Yusuf Akcicek after Al-Sadd鈥檚 defence made a hash of clearing a Theo Hernandez free kick. The home team鈥檚 other center-half, Senegal鈥檚 Kalidou Koulibaly, was credited with an assist for having the last touch before the decisive finish.

Five minutes before the break, Koulibaly turned goalscorer, nodding in a Ruben Neves corner from close range. After a long check by the video assistant referee for a possible foul, the goal was allowed to stand.

Al-Sadd got themselves back in the game in the 64th minute when former Al-Ahli captain Roberto Firmino stole in at the far post to tap home Pedro Miguel鈥檚 low cross from the right.

However, it was Al-Hilal who scored next, with nine minutes remaining, to all but kill off the match as a contest. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic hit a wonderful free kick from more than 30 yards out, curling the ball past a despairing Meshaal Bersham in goal.

  • The Tigers beat Al-Shorta of Iraq 4-1 in Baghdad to record their first victory in the group stage after 2 defeats
  • Goals from Moussa Diaby, Fabinho and Houssem Aouar gave new coach Sergio Conceicao his first win since replacing sacked Laurent Blanc on Oct. 7

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad beat Al-Shorta 4-1 on Monday to claim their first win in the AFC Champions League this season, and also hand new coach Sergio Conceicao a welcome first victory in his second game since taking over from sacked Laurent Blanc on Oct. 7.

The pressure was on the 2004 and 2005 continental champions, who had lost their first two group games, prior to Conceicao鈥檚 arrival, and it looked like they were in for another tough night in Baghdad against an Iraqi side who caused problems for their visitors throughout.

In fact, Al-Ittihad found themselves trailing after only five minutes, when Bassam Shakir put the hosts ahead to send the home fans wild. The midfielder reacted quickly at the far post to head home Mehdi Ashabi鈥檚 flick-on from a right-sided corner.

The Tigers were back on level terms just 12 minutes later, however, after Mahamadou Doumbia robbed an opponent of possession and chipped a smart cross toward Moussa Diaby, who headed home.

Just before the half-hour mark, the Jeddah giants took the lead in some style when Fabinho stepped up to bend a spectacular free-kick from about 25 meters out into the bottom corner of the net, a goal worthy of any stage.

Shortly before the break, Al-Shorta thought they were level when Dominique Mendy鈥檚 fierce drive hit the bar and the ball appeared to bounce down behind the line. The video assistant referee ruled otherwise.

There was better news for the hosts five minutes after the restart, as the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Danilo Pereira received a second yellow card for a foul. With Al-Shorta looking dangerous throughout the match, the game looked like it could go either way.

On the hour mark, however, Houssem Aouar extended Al-Ittihad鈥檚 lead, sidefooting from close range into an empty net after a driving run by Diaby.

Aouar scored his second, and his team鈥檚 fourth, after 76 minutes to seal the victory. Diaby was the provider once again, pulling the ball back from the left side of the area for the Algerian to slide home.
