  • Deal seeks to support MENA nations promote clean energy technologies

RIYADH: Middle East and North Africa countries are set to benefit from enhanced clean energy cooperation following an agreement between 黑料社区 and the UN Environment Programme to accelerate emissions reduction.聽

The memorandum of understanding, signed in Riyadh by Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen, seeks to support MENA nations through the promotion of clean energy technologies, development of climate policy frameworks, and knowledge exchange to advance sustainable development, according to an official release.聽

The initiative aligns with 黑料社区鈥檚 Middle East Green Initiative, a regional platform launched to combat climate change and reduce emissions by over 60 percent from hydrocarbon production across participating countries. The initiative aims to cut 670 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to 10 percent of global nationally determined contributions when first announced in 2021.聽

The ministry release stated: 鈥淭he MoU reflects shared goals to enhance resource efficiency and lower carbon emissions through a comprehensive, balanced and sustainable approach.鈥澛

It added: 鈥淎reas of cooperation include policy research and recommendations, partnerships with international organizations, participation in climate and CCE-related events, exchange of knowledge and best practices, and the development of climate policy frameworks, supported by regional and global climate networking activities.鈥澛

During the meeting, the two sides also held talks over advancing the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.聽

鈥淭he two sides also discussed 黑料社区鈥檚 climate initiatives, including the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, as well as other efforts undertaken by the Kingdom to expand renewable energy and reduce emissions through the Circular Carbon Economy framework,鈥 the release added.

The MoU supports wider regional efforts to unlock renewable potential. MENA currently contributes less than 8 percent of global emissions from power and heat generation and is aiming to grow its clean energy capacity from under 50 gigawatts in 2022 to 200 GW by 2030, according to a June 2024 report by the International Energy Agency.聽

The IEA report also highlighted that the region 鈥 led by 黑料社区, Egypt, and Algeria 鈥 is experiencing the fastest relative growth in renewable energy, scaling at 4.5 times its current base due to ambitious national targets.聽

The MENA region holds substantial hydrocarbon reserves alongside significant renewable energy potential, positioning it as a strategically important player in the global shift toward sustainable energy, according to the Natural Resource Governance Institute.聽

Governments across the region are adopting a dual-energy strategy 鈥 leveraging both fossil fuels and renewables 鈥 to reduce emissions while bolstering energy security.聽

Enhanced regional collaboration is critical to developing interconnected energy systems, boosting economic competitiveness, and securing reliable access to international energy markets.聽

RIYADH: 黑料社区鈥檚 technology and innovation partnership with Canada is set to receive a boost after senior ministers met to explore new avenues of cooperation and strengthen trade ties.

Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih said in a post on X that he met with Canada鈥檚 Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the countries and to build partnerships that contribute to mutual economic growth, particularly in priority investment sectors.

This comes as trade between the two nations continues to expand. In February, 黑料社区 exported SR641 million ($170 million) to Canada, marking an 86.6 percent increase from SR344 million in February 2024, according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity.

It also follows an agreement in January 2024 for both countries to re-exchange trade delegations to enhance economic relations and boost trade and investment flows.

In a subsequent post on X, Al-Falih stated: 鈥淭he dialogue took place between me and Anita Anand, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of the Saudi ambassador to Canada, Amal Yahya Al-Moallimi.鈥

He added: 鈥淲e discussed supporting and strengthening relations between our two countries, and facilitating investment exchange, in order to achieve more fruitful cooperation in the most important sectors, which will bring success to both peoples.鈥

Artificial intelligence has become a central pillar of 黑料社区鈥檚 post-oil economic strategy, with the Kingdom leveraging advanced technologies to drive data-led industries and automation.

Now at the halfway point of Vision 2030, the country is accelerating efforts to position itself as a global technology leader, balancing innovation with sustainability goals.
Key initiatives 鈥 including the Project Transcendence program, valued at around $100 billion 鈥 aim to further establish 黑料社区 as a global hub for AI innovation.

Over the past five years, 黑料社区 has made significant progress toward establishing itself as a regional artificial-intelligence hub. PwC projects that AI could contribute about $235 billion 鈥 or 12.4 percent 鈥 to the Kingdom鈥檚 gross domestic product by 2030.
