  • Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and president of the Saudi Boxing Federation, addresses packed Jevits Center

NEW YORK: There was a packed crowd at Jevits Center, New York, on Sunday for the second leg of the global media tour to promote the blockbuster Riyadh Season fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Terence “Bud” Crawford, the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas.

Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and president of the Saudi Boxing Federation, addressed the crowd after being introduced by legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer.

UFC CEO Dana White then stepped up to oversee the press conference for the undisputed super middleweight title bout, which has been billed as “Once in a Lifetime.”

White announced that the performance bonus for the fight, which will be broadcast exclusively live on Netflix, will be “over six figures,” before staging an intense face-off which led to Canelo and Crawford having to be separated by their teams.

Speaking at the press conference, reigning champion Canelo said: “He (Crawford) is one of the great fighters in the last years, obviously that is why he is a champion.

“My brother, Turki Alalshikh, thank you so much for this fight, we are here and I think it is a good fight for the fans.”

In response, Crawford, an unbeaten four-division and two-weight undisputed champion, said: “I’m hunting him. That’s it. I’m hunting everything that he has got, and I am going to take it come Sept. 13th.

“I am very confident. This is my time.”

The global media tour will conclude on Friday, June 27, in Las Vegas.

  • Belinda Bencic surprises herself as Tokyo win brings 10th title

VIENNA: Jannik Sinner clinched his fourth title of the season on Sunday as the Italian rallied from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev in the final of the Vienna Open.

Sinner dropped his first set of the tournament before staging a comeback to see off Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to land the 22nd title of his career.

It is his second triumph in Vienna, where he also lifted the trophy in 2023, and extended his winning run on indoor hard courts to 21 matches going into next week’s final Masters 1000 of the year in Paris.

But the top seed had to do it the hard way after falling behind as world No. 3 Zverev, who had won four of seven previous meetings, secured the only break of the first set to take the upper hand.

Sinner replied by racing 3-0 ahead in the second set as he forced a decider against the 2021 champion.

Zverev saved two break points in the fifth game of the third set but Sinner maintained the pressure despite battling a thigh issue in his first event since retiring with cramp at the Shanghai Masters.

Sinner created another opportunity at 5-all with a blistering backhand down the line and won a lengthy rally the following point to snatch the key break.

A routine hold wrapped up victory for the 24-year-old who has reached the final in eight of his 10 tournaments this season, with Sinner adding to his titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Beijing.

Meanwhile, Belinda Bencic said she surprised even herself by winning a second title of the season in Tokyo on Sunday, a year after returning to tennis from having a baby.

The Swiss beat the Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova 6-2, 6-3 in the Pan Pacific Open final, following up her success at the Abu Dhabi Open in February.

Bencic gave birth to a daughter in April last year and returned to the WTA Tour six months later.

The 28-year-old said she did not expect her comeback to “go this fast and this well.”

“I’m really enjoying my time back on tour and I think it’s showing in the results,” she said.

“I couldn’t be more happy and I’m definitely surprised. This was definitely not planned.”

Bencic was ranked 421 in the world at the start of the season but has climbed to 13 and is projected to rise even higher after her Tokyo win.

It gave her the 10th WTA title of her career and came 10 years after she last appeared in the Pan Pacific final, where she lost to Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska.

Bencic won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021. She said she was not sure when she launched her comeback if she would be able to return to the upper echelons of tennis.

Her performance at the Australian Open, where she beat former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka on the way to the last 16, convinced her to continue.

“It’s hard work but it’s a lot of self-belief and a lot of mental belief as well,” said Bencic, who reached a career-high ranking of four in February 2020.

“I’m really happy to have this confirmation with myself that I’m able to try to even beat my best ranking from before.”

Arsenal extend Premier League lead as Man City lose at Villa
  • Bournemouth are now the Gunners’ closest challengers in second after they beat Nottingham Forest 2-0
  • Spurs captain Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham inflicted Everton’s first defeat at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium

LONDON: Arsenal stretched their Premier League lead to four points as Eberechi Eze’s goal beat his former club Crystal Palace 1-0, while Manchester City lost 1-0 at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Bournemouth are now the Gunners’ closest challengers in second after they beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, while Tottenham climbed to third after a 3-0 win at Everton.

After Liverpool’s latest defeat to Brentford on Saturday, Arsenal enjoyed the perfect weekend as both their title rivals fell further behind as they go from strength to strength.

Eze left the Eagles to join Arsenal in a £60 million ($80 million) deal in August and his first Premier League goal was decisive as Mikel Arteta’s men were again able to lean on their set-piece prowess and a solid defense.

The England international blasted in on the volley after Palace failed to clear Declan Rice’s free-kick six minutes before half-time.

Arsenal again failed to hit top gear going forward, but didn’t need to as they kept a 10th clean sheet in 13 games in all competitions this season.

“The technique from Eze is unbelievable. We needed something special,” said Arteta.

“We didn’t score a second goal and when you don’t do that you are in danger, but we restricted them to very little.”

The only concern for Arteta was the sight of Rice and William Saliba having to be replaced in the second half due to injury.

Arsenal now lead fifth-placed City by six points and have a seven-point cushion over Liverpool in seventh.

- Haaland streak ends -

City appeared to be emerging as Arsenal’s biggest obstacle in the title race after a nine-game unbeaten run.

But Pep Guardiola’s men lost at Villa Park for the third consecutive season as Erling Haaland’s 12-game scoring streak came to an end.

Matty Cash’s stunning strike from outside the box on 19 minutes secured a fourth consecutive league win for Villa as Unai Emery’s men climb to seventh.

Haaland had a late goal ruled out for offside, but City’s lack of goal threat other than the Norwegian finally cost the visitors.

No City player other than Haaland has scored in the Premier League for a month.

“We were not aggressive enough,” said a disappointed Guardiola.

Spurs captain Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham inflicted Everton’s first defeat at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Pape Mate Sarr added a third late on to continue Tottenham’s strong start under Thomas Frank.

Bournemouth climbed up to second as Forest’s struggles continued despite a change in management.

Sean Dyche got his reign off to a winning start against Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, but Forest remain in the bottom three after they were convincingly beaten on the south coast.

Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring for the Cherries directly from a corner as the swirling wind caught out Matz Sels.

Eli Junior Kroupi then blasted in his fourth goal in six Premier League games to double Bournemouth’s lead.

Wolves remain bottom of the table after Burnley edged a 3-2 thriller in stoppage time at Molineux thanks to Lyle Foster.

Zian Flemming’s double put the visitors 2-0 up inside 30 minutes but Wolves hit back before half-time through Jorgen Strand Larsen and Marshall Munetsi.

Foster’s late strike propelled the Clarets five points clear of the relegation zone and left Wolves now six points adrift of safety.

Pakistan coach backs Azam’s return for South Africa T20s
  • Azam, 31, has been recalled for the first time since December last year
  • Mike Hesson believes the timing is right for Azam to make a comeback

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan coach Mike Hesson has thrown his support behind Babar Azam’s return to the T20 squad, as the three-match series against South Africa starts in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Azam, 31, has been recalled for the first time since December last year, having previously been dropped due to concerns over his strike rate in the format. But Hesson believes the timing is right for the batsman to make his comeback.

“Yes, I certainly endorse his selection,” Hesson said on Sunday. “We have rested Fakhar Zaman for this series, so it was a good opportunity to bring back Azam and I am confident he will do well.”

Azam, who captained Pakistan across all formats before stepping down in October 2024, is on the verge of a major milestone. He needs just nine runs to surpass India’s Rohit Sharma as the leading run-scorer in T20 internationals. Sharma currently has 4,231 runs from 159 matches, while Azam sits at 4,223 from 128 games.

Hesson, who took charge of the team in May, sees Azam’s return as a strategic move ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

“Azam is likely to bat at number three and it is a role that I am confident that he will be able to do well and give us some options coming into the World Cup,” he said.

Despite South Africa missing several key players, Hesson remains cautious about the threat they pose.

“Look, the squad that South Africa put together is a very dangerous side and we are wary of that,” he said, referring to the team captained by Donovan Ferreira.

South Africa will be without key batsman David Miller, who was ruled out due to a hamstring injury, and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, sidelined with a pectoral muscle issue. Opener Aiden Markram and paceman Kagiso Rabada have also been rested for the series.

The final two matches of the series will be played in Lahore on Friday and Saturday.

  • 2-0 win against Al-Hazem sees Riyadh club maintain perfect start to season with 18 points from 6 matches

RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 950th career goal on Saturday as Al-Nassr defeated Al-Hazem 2-0 at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium to stay top of the Saudi Pro League table.

The victory saw the Yellows maintain their 100 percent start to the season and they now lead the standings with 18 points from six matches, three ahead of second place Al-Taawoun. Riyadh rivals Al-Hilal are in third with 14 points, with Al-Hazem 14th with five points.

Portuguese playmaker Joao Felix opened the scoring on 25 minutes with a fine header past Bruno Varela in the Al-Hazem goal.

The match looked to be drifting toward a slender win for Al-Nassr following the break until Ronaldo stepped up with another landmark. With only two minutes of the 90 left, the captain expertly sidefooted home Wesley’s cross from the right to secure all three points for the league leaders.

Earlier on Saturday, Al-Qadsiah drew 0-0 at home against Al-Okhdood, while visitors Damac held Al-Shabab to 1-1 draw in Riyadh.

ABU DHABI: Hamdy Abdelwahab, coming off a loss in his previous fight, made an emphatic return to the UFC Octagon on Saturday night, beating Spain’s Chris Barnett by unanimous decision.

The Egyptian former Olympian is currently one of the most exciting prospects from the region, which has increasingly become a hub for global fights sports. Abdelwahab said he felt at home fighting at the Etihad Arena, thanking the fans who he said had spurred him on.

“I represent a whole Arab community, everyone here that has any Arab blood I represent them,” Abdelwahab said after the fight.

In his career, Abdelwahab has navigated highs and lows, including several knockout wins as well as suspensions. Now based in Dubai, he said he was training to bring opponents to the ground, where he believed his wrestling would prove overwhelming.

“The whole focus was my wrestling, no one can handle my wrestling, I need to show that I am an Olympic wrestler,” he said.

“I was blocking every single thing he can do, even the spinning kick and the elbows, I could see everything.”

Despite the UFC main card events being held in Abu Dhabi for several years now, with other fight nights held around the Gulf, the region is shy in terms of talent participating at the highest level of the sport.

With a dominant win under his belt, and home court advantage, Abdelwahab, believes he can change those odds, taking his wrestling all the way to the top.

“If they have space for me at the Fight Night in Qatar, I am ready to go, I will just pack my bags and take my team and we will go,” he said.
