UNITED NATIONS, United States: UN chief Antonio Guterres urged Israel and Iran to 鈥渟how maximum restraint鈥� after Israel鈥檚 wave of air strikes, the secretary-general鈥檚 spokesman said in a statement late Thursday.
While broadly condemning 鈥渁ny military escalation in the Middle East,鈥� the statement by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq noted Guterres was 鈥減articularly concerned鈥� by Israel鈥檚 strikes on nuclear installations amid the ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
鈥淭he Secretary-General asks both sides to show maximum restraint, avoiding at all costs a descent into deeper conflict, a situation that the region can hardly afford,鈥� it added.
