  • 黑料社区 began Hajj readiness months in advance, conducting global health risk assessments for diseases such as yellow fever, polio, and meningitis

RIYADH: 黑料社区鈥檚 Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel confirmed on Monday that there have been no public health concerns during the Hajj season so far and that the public health situation remains stable.

鈥淲e are pleased to announce that no epidemic cases have been detected so far and there is no risk for outbreak of diseases. The health and safety of pilgrims remain our highest priority,鈥 said Al-Jalajel in an official statement.

He said the Kingdom is proactively preparing to ensure a safe pilgrimage experience for everyone and the health ministry continues to closely monitor the health situation.

黑料社区鈥檚 extensive preparedness has been guided by the directives of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and is made possible by close cooperation across public, private, and non-governmental sectors, the ministry said.

黑料社区 began Hajj readiness months in advance, conducting global health risk assessments for diseases such as yellow fever, polio, and meningitis. These efforts led to the implementation of strict health entry requirements and the introduction of new 鈥渉ealth capability鈥 criteria to ensure pilgrims are medically fit to perform their rituals safely, the ministry added.

Al-Jalajel thanked all countries for cooperating and adhering to the guidelines. 鈥淥ur story with Hajj is long-standing, but every year we write a new chapter鈥攚ith greater readiness, deeper awareness, and smarter technology,鈥 the minister said.

Health teams have been stationed at 14 entry points across land, air, and sea to provide immediate medical services since the first flight under the Makkah Route Initiative arrived, the ministry said.

So far, over 50,000 healthcare services have been delivered, including 140 surgeries, 65 cardiac catheterizations, and six open-heart procedures.

As part of preventative measures against extreme heat, the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites has planted over 10,000 trees, expanded shaded walkways, and installed 400 water stations and mist fans.

The Ministry has also launched many multilingual public health awareness raising campaigns through media, field engagement, and international medical missions.

It has also significantly boosted the health infrastructure at the holy sites. Bed capacity has increased by 60 percent compared to last year. A new emergency hospital with 200 beds was recently inaugurated in Mina, while three field hospitals 鈥 totaling more than 1,200 beds 鈥 were deployed in collaboration with the Ministries of Defense, Interior, and National Guard.

This year has also seen the highest-ever private sector involvement in Hajj healthcare, with three major private hospitals operating at the holy sites.

To ensure rapid emergency responses, 11 medical evacuation aircraft, 900 ambulances, and 71 new emergency points have been activated, with more than 7,500 paramedics on the ground.

Advanced digital solutions are being deployed, including smart monitoring devices for high-risk pilgrims connected to Seha Virtual Hospital and telemedicine services for remote consultations. More than 50,000 healthcare and technical professionals are behind these efforts.

In a direct message to pilgrims, Al-Jalajel said: 鈥淵ou are the most important part of Hajj. Your awareness, prevention, and responsibility matter. Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged walking and overcrowded areas, wear your mask, use an umbrella, and follow movement instructions. If you feel unwell, seek help immediately. We are always by your side.鈥

鈥淎wareness, prevention, and responsibility are not only personal choices鈥攂ut religious and humanitarian obligations to protect the health and safety of all pilgrims,鈥 he added.

  • Salma Shaker has taken her passion and turned it into record-setting dives

JEDDAH: At just 25 years old, Saudi freediver Salma Shaker has ensured her name features in the sporting halls of fame.

When she took place at the elite, invite-only Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas this year 鈥 the first athlete from the Kingdom to be asked 鈥 she broke four Saudi national records 鈥 55m free immersion, 62m constant weight with fins, 42m constant weight no fins and 66m deep constant weight bi-fins.

Her freediving journey started when she was 18, inspired by a lifelong love of the sea. Born into a family with deep ties to the ocean 鈥 her father being a captain and marine geologist 鈥 she grew up exploring the shores and shallow waters of Jeddah鈥檚 coast.

Her early training with instructor Mariam Shalan set her on a path that led quickly to competition. She took various national and regional titles including Deepest GCC Woman in 2019 and Deepest Arab Woman in 2024 and 2025, with two dives of 66 meters and 70 meters, respectively.

鈥 Salma Shaker鈥檚 early training with freediving instructor Mariam Shalan set her on a path that led quickly to competition.

鈥 At the elite, invite-only Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas this year she broke four Saudi national records.

鈥 She is preparing for the CMAS World Championship in September 鈥 but she says freediving is about more than setting or breaking records.

For Shaker, freediving is more than a sport 鈥 it鈥檚 therapy: 鈥淭he ocean is my peace,鈥 she told Arab News.

She believes her ability to find calm is the key to her success, especially at Vertical Blue where she described feeling a surreal, almost out-of-body stillness, before each dive.

Salma Shaker, Saudi freediver

鈥淓ver since I started freediving, I鈥檝e always wanted to compete in Vertical Blue,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was trying to get my invitation for two years, and when I finally did, it was something I couldn鈥檛 believe. I felt so honored that I was the first Arab woman to represent there and raise the Saudi flag.鈥

Freediving, she added, is about overcoming both physical and mental challenges.

Freediving isn鈥檛 just a sport鈥攊t鈥檚 about connection: to yourself, to nature, and to something greater. I want to show that Arab women can lead in extreme sports, not just compete. I also want to highlight how precious and unique our Red Sea is.

鈥淭he mental challenge that you ideally face is just getting over the fear in your head. It鈥檚 a lot to go down while not wearing a mask, not seeing anything around you鈥攁nd it鈥檚 also deep. That鈥檚 why you learn to completely relax,鈥 she said.

鈥淭he physical challenge for me is equalizing my ears the deeper I go. It just needs practice, new techniques and repetition.鈥

She says that, for her, the sport is also about advocacy. Last year, Shaker was featured in 鈥淏eneath the Surface: The Fight for Corals,鈥 a Red Sea Global documentary highlighting marine conservation. She has since partnered with the company to champion coral reef protection and promote sustainable tourism.

鈥淢y connection with Red Sea Global actually goes back a long way, and it's been really special. I first visited one of their amazing resorts back in 2021 and honestly, I was blown away,鈥 she said. 鈥淭heir whole approach 鈥 how they link everything to the sea and blend nature so beautifully into their projects 鈥 just clicked with me instantly.鈥

The company now sponsors her.

鈥淭hey're exactly who I want by my side as I push boundaries and share stories through the water,鈥 she said. 鈥(They鈥檙e not) just building resorts; they're creating something completely new with regenerative tourism.鈥

Looking ahead, Shaker is preparing for the CMAS World Championship in September 鈥 but she says freediving is about more than setting or breaking records.

鈥淎fter competing in Vertical Blue, I feel pretty happy and ready for whatever鈥檚 next. I hope to inspire people to understand the power of silence, breath and inner strength,鈥 she told Arab News.
