Al-Hilal part ways with coach Jorge Jesus

Al-Hilal part ways with coach Jorge Jesus

RIYADH: Al-Hilal and coach Jorge Jesus have parted ways, according to a club announcement early on Saturday.

“The Board of Directors of Al-Hilal Club Company has agreed with the Portuguese head coach of the first football team Jorge Jesus to terminate the contractual relationship between them,” the club posted on social media.

Coach Mohammed Al-Shalhoub will now take over first-team duties.

“The Board expressed its appreciation for the efforts made by the technical staff since last season,” the Al-Hilal statement said.

The surprising aspect about Jorge Jesus being dismissed by Al-Hilal is that it is not that surprising. The Portuguese boss took the job for a second time in July 2023 and hit the ground running. A few months later, he was leading the Blues to a world-record winning streak of 34 games. It was a phenomenal first season with the Saudi Pro League title, the King’s Cup and the Saudi Super Cup. Yet despite the silverware, the bullet had been coming.

Losing the semifinal of the AFC Champions League Elite against Al-Ahli 3-1 in late April was the final straw. The most successful team in the history of Asian football was just 90 minutes away from the final and a real chance of a fifth title, but in the end, the defeat was deserved.

It comes after an uncertain period in which Al-Hilal have not looked like their usual selves. In November came a first-league defeat in 18 months, a surprise 3-2 loss to Al-Khaleej. It was even more of a surprise given that the defending champions were 2-0 ahead at the break before throwing it all away in the second-half.

Well, even Al-Hilal have to lose sometime. The next five league games brought the maximum 15 points, 23 goals, and title number 20 still looked to be on the cards, but the loss had changed something. Al-Hilal were vulnerable, after all. In the following 13 league games, there were four defeats — including a painful Riyadh Derby loss to Nassr and a 4-1 loss to Ittihad — and four draws. Given Al-Hilal’s high standards, it was a shock. It was also a gift to Al-Ittihad, who were able to take control of the title race.

Not winning the domestic title is always dangerous for a coach of Al-Hilal. Add an exit from Asian competition, then it really is time to worry. Leonardo Jardim was fired early in 2022, just a few weeks after winning the club’s fourth Champions League.

“Things didn’t go the way I planned, and when the result is negative, we look for a victim,” said Jesus just before the end. “I am the one who bears responsibility. I am the one who builds the team and sets the match plans, and I am responsible as the coach.”

Everything comes from results, and the change from a winning machine to a team that was then struggling to put wins together meant that off the pitch, pressures grew. The 70-year-old has come under attack with increasing regularity from ex-players and/or pundits, which is never a good sign. There had also been rumors for a few months that some players had grown unhappy with the methods and that there was tension between the boss and some senior and influential players.

As Al-Hilal started to lose the big games, tactics and in-game management were questioned. In the 7-0 thrashing of Gwangju FC in the Champions League quarter-finals, Hilal looked solid at the back and devastating in attack. Yet against Al-Ahli a few days later, Hassan Tambakti, who looked imperious in defense, was benched and in came Ali Al-Bulaihi, who did not have one of his best games. The Jeddah club were finding a lot of space between the lines and causing all kinds of problems but the Portuguese boss did not react quickly enough and by the time he started to do so, Kalidou Koulibaly was red-carded and a tough situation became almost impossible.

And there was some disquiet about the public linking of Jesus with the Brazil job. In some ways, this helped his position, initially at least. How could Al-Hilal think about firing a coach twho was being linked with the most successful national team in the world? But the longer it went on, it started to become a bigger story. Carlo Ancelotti was always the front-runner but Real Madrid started to become annoyed at how Brazil were going about trying to get their man; the Al-Hilal hierarchy took note of their man being in the news. The Brazilian media has said that Jesus wanted the job and was upset at being the second choice.

It all meant that, with the season petering out at home and overseas, it was not a surprise that Hilal wanted a change. The FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament that Al-Hilal take very seriously, is looming, especially the opener against Real Madrid. Having a new man in charge sooner rather than later makes sense for that competition and also for the next season. Expect a big name.

India and Pakistan meet again at Asia Cup after handshake row

India and Pakistan meet again at Asia Cup after handshake row
  • India won the September 14 group match by seven wickets in Dubai
  • They afterwards refused to shake hands with their opponents, angering Pakistan

DUBAI: India and Pakistan clash again in the Asia Cup on Sunday, renewing one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries a week after their last match was overshadowed by a handshake row.
India won the September 14 group match by seven wickets in Dubai and afterwards refused to shake hands with their opponents, angering Pakistan.
It was the first meeting between the neighbors since a four-day cross-border conflict in May left more than 70 people dead.
The Pakistan Cricket Board lodged a protest with the International Cricket Council alleging that match referee Andy Pycroft had told skipper Salman Agha not to approach Indian counterpart Suryakumar Yadav for a handshake at the toss.
The PCB demanded Pycroft be removed from their matches and threatened to withdraw from the eight-team Twenty20 competition.
Their last group game was held up for an hour before the PCB said Pycroft had apologized and the match, with the Zimbabwean in charge, eventually went ahead.
Pakistan beat hosts the United Arab Emirates to qualify for the next stage, the Super Fours, and set up another meeting with India in Dubai.
Indian media has reported that the team plans to stick to its no-handshake policy for Sunday’s clash.
India spinner Kuldeep Yadav sought to defuse the controversy.
“When you step onto the field it’s just a batter in front of you. I have always approached it this way against Pakistan,” he said ahead of India’s last group game, against Oman on Friday.
Agha also stuck to sport.
“If we play good cricket like we have played in the last few months I think we’ll be good against any side,” the Pakistan captain told reporters.
Simmering tensions
Because of fraught political ties, nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan only meet at neutral venues during multi-team tournaments.
Tensions soared ahead of the Asia Cup after the two countries engaged in their worst conflict since 1999.
The hostilities in May left more than 70 people dead in missile, drone and artillery exchanges, before a ceasefire.
The conflict was triggered by an April attack on civilians in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing, a charge Islamabad denies.
India resisted calls to boycott the first Pakistan match.
A potential third India-Pakistan showdown looms if both sides qualify for the final on September 28 in Dubai.
India lifted the Asia Cup in its last, 50-over edition and are favorites to retain the crown.
India and Pakistan advanced to the next stage from Group A while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified from Group B.
Sri Lanka face Bangladesh on Saturday in the first Super Fours fixture.
Sri Lanka, unbeaten so far, look dangerous while Bangladesh carry the underdog tag under skipper Litton Das.
Along with regional bragging rights, the Asia Cup serves as build-up toward the T20 World Cup in February-March in India and Sri Lanka.

  • Barcelona says its upcoming Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain will be played at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, its home for the previous two seasons

BARCELONA: Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain will be played at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, its home for the previous two seasons, the Spanish club said Friday.
Barcelona had hoped to return to a newly renovated Camp Nou at the start of this season, but delays in construction have forced it to play elsewhere.
The club has decided that it will host PSG at the 55,000-seat Olympic Stadium after it had been forced to face Valencia in its first home game of the Spanish league season at its tiny Estadi Johan Cruyff, which only seats 6,000 and is located outside the city.
Barcelona will also play Getafe in the Spanish league on Sunday at the Johan Cruyff stadium, where its women’s team plays most of its games.
European champion PSG will visit Barcelona on Oct. 1 in the second round of matches in the league phase of the Champions League.
Barcelona said in a statement that it is working “to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening of the Spotify Camp Nou in the coming months.”
Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique helped lead PSG to the European title last season.

  • “At this moment, we would like to thank Tim for his continued dedication and commitment to Arsenal in a period of transformational change for the club

Arsenal announced a major boardroom reshuffle on Friday, with Executive Vice-Chair Tim Lewis leaving the Premier League club and Managing Director Richard Garlick promoted to Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect.
Lewis, who was appointed Executive Vice-Chair in March 2023, has been advising Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) since 2007 and joined Arsenal’s board as Director in September 2020.
Garlick, who arrived at Arsenal in 2021 as Director of Football Operations, has served as Managing Director for the past year.
“Rich has made an enormous impact on all fronts as we continue to strive to win major trophies, be financially sustainable and put our supporters at the heart of everything,” Arsenal Co-Chair Josh Kroenke said.
“At this moment, we would like to thank Tim for his continued dedication and commitment to Arsenal in a period of transformational change for the club.
“He has played a pivotal role and ensured we are in a great position to continue to deliver our strategy in our ambition to win major trophies.”
Arsenal have finished runners-up in the last three Premier League seasons, with their league title drought now 21 years.
They again recruited heavily in the close season, adding the center-forward fans have long called for in Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres, bolstering the attack with England’s Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze and signing Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera.

‘Historic moment’ — India’s 6 best baseball players are finally going pro
  • Dubai-based Baseball United signs 6 players, including 3 born in India, to the Mumbai Cobras, the country’s first professional baseball team

DUBAI: Baseball United, the first professional baseball league focused on the Middle East and South Asia, has announced the signing of three Indian and three Indian-American players.

They will compete for the Mumbai Cobras, the first professional baseball franchise in the history of India. The franchise will take center stage against the Karachi Monarchs when Baseball United kicks off its inaugural season in Dubai on Nov. 14. It will mark the first time a professional baseball league has ever played in the Middle East or South Asia.

The milestone is even more significant due to the inclusion of six Indians, giving the nation’s athletes a global platform usually reserved for cricket. Among the players are three homegrown talents, all developed within India’s grassroots baseball community by local coaches and universities, as well as via Baseball United’s India Development Program.

“This is a historic moment for sport in India,” said Kash Shaikh, Baseball United CEO, chairman and co-founder. “We know that cricket is king in India. But we believe that baseball is the country’s young prince. The core elements of the game are the same — you hit, catch, throw and run. And there’s quite a bit of shared terminology.

“Once more Indians learn the game, I know they will start to love (it). And one of the best ways to help people fall in love with baseball is through the Indian stars who will take the field for the Mumbai Cobras. These young men — all with inspiring stories — will be some of the nation’s newest sports heroes.”

Although overshadowed by cricket, baseball’s popularity in India has grown steadily. It has been played across 26 states — from Kerala in the south to Punjab in the north — for more than 50 years, with a stronghold of talent across Mumbai and Maharashtra. According to YouGov, there are 53 million avid fans in India with an average age of just 24 years old — one of the youngest fanbases in all sports.

More than 500 schools and universities across India compete in baseball and softball, with Lovely University, a private facility in Phagwara, Punjab, winning this year’s All India Inter University Baseball Championship.

All three of the local Indian players joining the Cobras — Saurabh Gaikwad, Akshay More and Tushar Lalwani — were standout pitchers.

Gaikwad, 23, is the son of local farmers from Pangari in Satara district, Maharashtra and has played baseball for 11 years. He’s pitched in four University National Championships and several international tournaments, including Baseball United’s All-Star Showcase exhibition in November 2023 and the Baseball United Arab Classic in 2024. Gaikwad has been coached by Vishnu Kalel, Baseball United’s baseball development manager in India, since 2014, and instructed by Carlos Mirabal, the organization’s manager of global baseball operations, since 2019.

More, 21, lives with nearly 40 other family members in Pune district, Maharashtra. He began playing baseball in 2019 after focusing on martial arts in his early childhood. More’s first international experience was also at the Baseball United All-Star Showcase, after which he played in three University National Championships, and the Baseball United Arab Classic. More was named “Best Pitcher” in the All India Inter University Baseball Championship in 2023 and 2025. He has been coached by both Kalel and Mirabal since 2021.

Lalwani, 22, is from Andheri West, Mumbai, where his mother worked in a call center. He has played baseball for six years, after starting his athletic career as a cricketer. He pitched in four University National Championships, four Federations National Championships and in the Baseball United Arab Classic in 2024. He has been coached by both Kalel and Mirabal since 2021.

The three Indian-American signings are Karan Patel, Raul Shah and Aaron Singh.

Patel, 28, is a pitcher from Houston, Texas. His father, an avid cricketer, was born in Mumbai. Patel made history in 2019 by becoming the first player of Indian descent to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team, selected by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round after four years at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Patel pitched at All American level with the Birmingham Barons and spent last year with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association of Professional Baseball. He was the first overall draft pick by the Cobras in the inaugural Baseball United Draft in 2023.

Shah, 31, a second baseman from Chatham, UK, was a member of Great Britain’s national team for the 2022 World Baseball Classic qualifiers. He spent four years at Johns Hopkins University and most recently played for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the Atlantic League. He was a ninth-round pick by the Cobras in the inaugural draft.

Singh, 28, a shortstop from Artesia, California spent four years at the University of Redlands where he was all-conference, all-region and AA while earning the ABCA Rawlings Gold Glove. Most recently, he played for the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League.

“This is such a big day in my life,” said Kalel. “I’ve always dreamed of helping baseball players in India reach the biggest stages. And now, thanks to the vision of Kash Shaikh and the entire team at Baseball United, that dream has come to life.

“I learned about pitching from watching videos on YouTube 10 years ago. The first video I watched was actually about Mariano Rivera — one of Baseball United’s co-founders — and his amazing pitch, the ‘cutter.’ After that, I started working with local kids to teach them proper mechanics and techniques for pitching. And when I met Carlos Mirabal a few years later, he really took my training and coaching to another level.”

He added: “In 2022, when I first met Mr. Kash Shaikh, and he eventually offered me a job at Baseball United, it was a magical moment for me. I cried that day with tears of joy. Then, when Mr. Kash and the team announced the Mumbai Cobras franchise one year later, that became another amazing milestone in my life. Since then, there have been so many incredible moments through Baseball United. But today — as we announce three professional players whom I coached in my home of Maharashtra for all of these years — today may be the biggest moment yet. I can’t wait to see all the Mumbai Cobras jerseys on the fields and in the stands in Dubai.”

The Mumbai Cobras will take the field for the first time on Nov. 14 at Baseball United Ballpark in Dubai. The league will open with the Subcontinent Series, three games between Mumbai and the Karachi Monarchs.

Overall, four teams — including the Arabia Wolves and Mid East Falcons — will compete in a month-long season, with the top two teams advancing to the best-of-three championship, the United Series, on Dec. 12–14. The games will be broadcast globally, with partners announced in the coming weeks.

The full Mumbai Cobras roster will be revealed today.
