  • Porzingis: We’re going to be us. We’re not going to let anybody punk us
  • Donovan Mitchell scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and the Cavs took a 2-0 series edge with Game 3 Saturday in Miami

WASHINGTON: Bloodied and bruised, the defending champion Boston Celtics warned NBA rivals who want to intimidate them with a physical style that they are ready to trade blows with anybody.

Jaylen Brown scored 36 points, going 5-of-7 from three-point range, and the host Celtics defeated Orlando 109-100 on Wednesday, seizing a 2-0 lead in an Eastern Conference first round best-of-seven series that continues Friday in Orlando.

The Celtics were without six-time All-Star forward Jason Tatum — their points, rebounds and assists leader — as he missed his first career playoff game after 114 appearances due to a bruised right wrist bone suffered in the series opener.

Boston center Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 points and matched Brown and Al Horford with 10 rebounds despite suffering a bloody forehead gash late in the third quarter when struck in a rebound battle by the left elbow of Orlando center Goga Bitadze, the Georgian opening a cut that required five stitches.

“It was a tough, physical game. Nothing easy on either side. Every rebound is a war and it’s probably going to be that way for the rest of the series,” Porzingis said.

“We’re going to be us. We’re not going to let anybody punk us.”

Latvia’s Porzingis said the Celtics expect a body-banging style from opponents and Boston will be ready to respond in kind.

“We expect teams to be doing this kind of stuff, to get in our heads, try to provoke us, get some reaction out of us,” Porzingis said.

“We weren’t surprised but we’re just not going to take it. We’re going to hit them right back.”

In other games, East top seed Cleveland held off visiting Miami 121-112 as Donovan Mitchell scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and the Cavs took a 2-0 series edge with Game 3 Saturday in Miami.

At Houston, Jalen Green scored 38 points and the host Rockets beat Golden State 109-94 to level their Western Conference series at 1-1 with game three in San Francisco on Saturday.

Golden State lost Jimmy Butler to a pelvis contusion after a severe fall on a first-quarter foul by Houston’s Amen Thompson. An MRI on Thursday will detail the extent of his injury.

Turkiye’s Alperen Sengun added 17 points and 16 rebounds for Houston. Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 20 points.

After being knocked to the court, Porzingis rose and went to the locker room for a huge bandage, then returned and shot his free throws before going back to the locker room, returning to the game with 7:15 to play and a smaller bandage.

“This one was just a quick flash, a quick cut, but I saw the amount of blood as soon as I looked at my hand so I knew it was going to be some stitches for sure,” Porzingis said, comparing the action to the violence of pro wrestling.

“I love my ‘WWE’ moments for sure,” Porzingis said. “It just happens in the game. I knew getting hit again, blood again, crowd was going to go with it. It’s cool. It was fine.”

Boston led 81-71 entering the fourth quarter and the Magic got no closer than five points after that.

“We didn’t play up to our level,” Porzingis said. “I expect us to be better going forward.”

Orlando’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope fouled Tatum on the injury play in game one and in game two tripped over Horford. Both players were restrained before the second-quarter incident escalated.

The Celtics were 8-2 in the regular season without Tatum, both losses coming to Orlando.

“We’ve got a lot of talent so it just comes down to being ready,” Brown said. “We came out and were aggressive.”

At Cleveland, the Heat trailed 53-34 in the second quarter but battled back and went on an 11-1 run to pull within 101-99 with 4:25 remaining before Mitchell caught fire late.

“It was one of those ‘superstar takes over game’ situations,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said. “He hit some big-time shots.”

“Just trying to find my rhythm,” Mitchell said. “My job is just to lead every single night in any way possible. Tonight it was go score.”

Miami’s Tyler Herro scored 33 in a losing cause. Cleveland also had 21 points from Darius Garland and 20 from Evan Mobley.

Qatar bids to host 2036 Olympic Games
  • One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup
  • Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games

DOHA: Doha is bidding to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, authorities said on Tuesday, as the wealthy Gulf state sets its sights on yet another major sport event to diversify its energy-reliant economy.

One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games, said Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.

“The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar’s journey,” he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency.

“The bid builds on Qatar’s proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” Sheikh Mohammed added.

Amnesty International and other rights groups claimed thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up to the 2022 tournament, though Doha has said only 37 workers on World Cup projects perished – and only three in work-related accidents.

President of the Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani said Doha had “made sport a central pillar of our national strategy.”

“We currently have 95 percent of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100 percent readiness of all facilities,” he said.

Countries are no longer required to make their Olympic bids public.

The Games are meant to rotate continents every season. With the 2024, 2028, and 2032 editions set for Europe, North America, and Oceania, there are high chances the 2036 Olympic Games will be held in Asia – or in Africa, which would be a first.

Choosing the next host of the games will be the first major project for the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) new president Kirsty Coventry, who last month became the first woman to lead the body.

6th edition of IMMAF Youth World Championships kicks off in Al-Ain
  • Over 1,000 male and female athletes representing 60 countries will compete at the tournament, which runs until July 27

AL-AIN: The sixth edition of the IMMAF Youth World Championships on Monday got underway at ADNEC Centre Al-Ain and is set to feature a record participation of more than 1,000 male and female athletes representing 60 countries.

Organized by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation and hosted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, the championship runs until July 27. It is the first time that it has been hosted in Al-Ain.

For the first time since the championship’s inception, competitions in the Youth D category, for athletes aged 10 to 11, were held, with the UAE national team making an impressive start to the tournament.

Kerrith Brown, president of IMMAF, expressed pride in the ongoing partnership with the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation. He noted that this edition is the largest since the championship began in 2019 and serves as an ideal platform for cultural exchange and for promoting positive values among youth worldwide.

He highlighted that the UAE has become a leading model for hosting international sporting events, supported by its ambitious vision, world-class infrastructure and commitment to empowering youth in the field of sports.

Mohammed bin Dalmouj Al-Dhaheri, board member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation and chairman of the MMA Committee, said: “Hosting the championship in the Al-Ain Region for the first time reflects the international sporting community’s confidence in the UAE’s organizational capabilities. It also highlights the country’s efforts in enhancing its sports infrastructure and expanding its hosting map to cover all emirates.

“The inclusion of the Youth D category this year introduces a new dimension to the competition and aligns with a forward-thinking vision to support and nurture talent from a young age. This contributes to developing future champions, instilling a positive competitive spirit early on, and preparing a generation with the skills and mindset needed to represent the UAE on the global stage.”

Kyle Wilson, coach of the US national team, commented: “We are here with around 30 athletes. This isn’t our first time in the UAE, as we’ve competed before in a championship held in Dubai. The level of organization at this event is exceptional. Everything runs smoothly and meets the highest standards, allowing athletes and coaches to focus fully on the matches. We’ve trained hard in the lead-up and had a good performance today. We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s bouts.”

  • Designation allows club to organize and host both indoor and outdoor showjumping events

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club has been accredited as the world’s first hybrid showjumping arena by the International Equestrian Federation, allowing it to host indoor and outdoor events.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, vice president of the UAE, deputy prime minister, minister of the presidential court, and chairman of the ADEC has been instrumental in the advancement of equestrian sport, the organization said in a statement recently.

In addition, the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation has played a key role by organizing and promoting international championships.

Ali Al-Shaiba, director-general of the ADEC, said: “This is a proud moment; this recognition marks a historic milestone for equestrian sport in the UAE.

“It is a reflection of our leadership’s vision and a testament to the nation’s commitment to excellence across all disciplines.

“The new hybrid arena at ADEC is not only the first of its kind globally — it also sets a new benchmark offering a unique venue designed to meet the needs of both riders and horses year-round.”

The arena is a modern equestrian facility inspired by the traditions of Arab architecture and debuted with a series of events during the 2024–25 season.

This includes two major International Equestrian Federation-sanctioned tournaments held in partnership with the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation: the Abu Dhabi International Show Jumping Event CSI4-W and the UAE President’s Cup Show Jumping CSI5 (2025 Edition).

In addition, the ADEC hosted three international competitions in January 2025, all in the new hybrid arena: the 12th FBMA International Show Jumping Cup CSI2; Al-Shira’aa International Horse Show CSI3; and Al-Shira’aa International Horse Show CSI4-W.
