  • Abdulaziz Alaqel, senior executive director of development at Qiddiya, spoke to Arab News about delivering the globe鈥檚 most dynamic and immersive motorsports entertainment location

RIYADH: With its fifth edition in 2025, the Formula 1 黑料社区n Grand Prix is no longer the new kid on the block.

While the Jeddah Corniche Circuit has established the Saudi event on the racing calendar over the last five years, the future of motorsports is in Riyadh鈥檚 new city of Qiddiya.

Abdulaziz Alaqel, senior executive director of development at Qiddiya, says the vision for motorsports at the entertainment and tourism megaproject is based on three key pillars.

Firstly, to become the new home of global motorsports, setting the highest standards across the board including the track, facilities and fan experience.

Secondly, delivering o铿erings which will create the most dynamic and immersive motorsports entertainment destination in the world.

And finally to host national, regional and international events and championships, providing a sustainable platform for the future of Saudi motorsport.

鈥淭hese three elements create a combined vision which is achieved across the large range of entertainment, sports, cultural and hospitality assets within the motorsport development at Qiddiya,鈥 Alaqel said.

鈥淚t is also critical that the development allows for a multimodal motorsport offering, which supports the vast range of races which are to be hosted at Qiddiya.鈥

Several components will feature within the project, including the Qiddiya City Speed Park Track and the Mercedes-AMG World of Performance.

鈥淨iddiya City鈥檚 Speed Park Track is designed to take race day to the next level, delivering a high-octane, supercharged experience to those who love the sport and identify with the thrill of power and speed,鈥 said Alaqel.

鈥淭he Speed Park Track rede铿乶es and elevates the motorsports experience, ensuring that it鈥檚 extraordinary and accessible to not only professionals and their fans but also to enthusiasts of all kinds.鈥

Some of the most unique features of the Speed Park Track is the combination of a permanent open section and street con铿乬uration, with 21 corners constituting a lap.

The 80 garages will have the capacity to host multiples racing series and championships, Alaqel said.

鈥淥n top of hosting high-visibility racing events, the Speed Park Track will also regularly host open track days for enthusiasts during the quieter o铿-season,鈥 he added.

鈥淪peed Park Track is capable to host the world鈥檚 largest and biggest motorsport events, including Formula 1, MotoGP, Formula E, and many more.

鈥淭he Speed Park Track will also serve as a home base for many of the country鈥檚 various motorsport clubs, where enthusiasts get to showcase their machines, network with people of similar interests, attend trade shows, and compete in tournaments.鈥

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG World of Performance will be a combination of immersive rides, interactive experiences and exhibits. It will bring the world of Mercedes-AMG and its famed Petronas F1 team closer to its international army of fans.

Consisting of nine 铿俹ors of Mercedes-AMG branded space, spanning 45,000 sq. meters, the center will be positioned adjacent to the Qiddiya City Speed Park Track.

鈥淭he Mercedes-AMG Driving experience will utilize this direct track access, placing guests behind the wheel of AMG鈥檚 latest models and alongside dedicated professional drivers, there to coach motorsport fans on how to achieve fast lap times and advanced driving techniques,鈥 said Alaqel.

For fans of the modern history of the sport, the Mercedes-AMG World of Performance will showcase a collection of Mercedes-AMG鈥檚 铿乶est, rarest, and boldest designs, from classic road cars to performance cars.

During a Mercedes-AMG World of Performance Play Panel ahead of the 黑料社区n Grand Prix, Abdullah Aldawood, MD of Qiddiya Investment Co., spoke about the pact.

鈥淚 think the spirit of the partnership between Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes F1 and Qiddiya City is to take it beyond just a one-weekend Grand Prix through the Mercedes World of Performance, to take the next leap.鈥

Reema Juffali, the 黑料社区 founder and racing driver of Theeba Motorsport, speaking on the same panel, said she was excited about the partnership.

鈥淔or me, hearing something like Qiddiya and Mercedes in Saudi investing in our people, investing in the future of sport, of motorsport in Saudi is extremely exciting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 something that I want to be part of, helping the next generation of Saudis, and I can鈥檛 wait to see it and be a part of it.鈥

Meanwhile Toto Wolf, team principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, called the development 鈥渢he most spectacular Mercedes AMG presence in the world.鈥

鈥淵ou haven鈥檛 seen anything like this on the racetracks that exist,鈥 added the man who has led his team to eight consecutive Formula One Constructors鈥 Championships (2014-2021) and seven consecutive Drivers鈥 Championships (2014-2020).

鈥淲e are talking about this vision, but what this track is going to look like, the layout of the corners, up in the air, I mean it鈥檚 going to be truly fascinating.鈥

Alaqel added: 鈥淭he spectator facilities being developed are not typical to a racing circuit 鈥 whereby there are no permanent grandstands, and guests can move between a relaxed style of landscape terracing.

鈥淭he motorsport development is fully integrated with the adjacent entertainment, cultural and hospitality assets, whether this is through the Speed Park Track which cuts through the adjacent locations or the entertainment assets which border the Aquarabia park and East Village.鈥

Alaqel said Qiddiya would be 鈥渢he world鈥檚 铿乺st city built for play, where thrilling entertainment and sports meet culture experiences,鈥 enhanced by other developments.

Motorsport would add to the 鈥渨orld class sporting venues and events, immersive and authentic entertainment o铿erings as well as cultural assets, combining in a succinct development putting play and the customer 铿乺st.

鈥淭he motorsport development within Qiddiya will help put 黑料社区 motorsport on the map, bringing guests in from all around the world to experience and enjoy all that is on o铿er.鈥

He said the construction of the shell and core for the Mercedes-AMG World of Performance began last year. It was 鈥減rogressing very well鈥 with the completion of the soil investigation and substructure, and work was starting on the superstructure and facade.

Alaqel believes the partnership between Qiddiya and Mercedes-AMG will cement the city鈥檚 status as one of the world鈥檚 leading motorsport destinations, contributing to Saudi Vision 2030.

鈥淭he Mercedes-AMG World of Performance will contribute to the ambitions of Qiddiya city to become the capital of entertainment, sports, and culture, enhancing 黑料社区鈥檚 global position in sports, culture and entrainment,鈥 he said.

It would further 鈥減ositively contribute to the quality of life for Qiddiya City visitors and residents.鈥

  • The 27-year-old French defender joins Al-Hilal on a three-year deal

Paris: Saudi club Al-Hilal on Thursday signed AC Milan鈥檚 French full-back Theo Hernandez on a three-year contract.
The 27-year-old leaves the Serie A side in a deal worth 25 million euros ($29.2 million), Italian media report.
Hernandez has played 38 times for France with two goals, and figured in the last World Cup, including the defeat by Argentina on penalties in the 2022 final in Qatar.
Moving to the Saudi Pro League a year before the next World Cup could be considered a risk for his chances of getting called up again by coach Didier Deschamps.
But he can take encouragement that Deschamps selected N鈥橤olo Kante for Euro 2024 whilst he was playing for another Saudi club, Al-Ittihad.
Theo is the younger brother of Paris Saint-Germain and France defender Lucas Hernandez.

  • In three of the Riyadh club鈥檚 four matches in the US, different Al-Hilal players have received the Man of the Match award

DUBAI: Whenever called upon, collectively and individually, Al-Hilal鈥檚 players have stepped up at just the right moments at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Not many teams concede three goals against Pep Guardiola鈥檚 Manchester City and live to tell the tale. But that is exactly what Al-Hilal did on June 30 with their incredible 4-3 win in the Round of 16.

In just a few short weeks, new coach Simone Inzaghi looks to have transformed the team tactically and mentally after a disappointing season that saw them relinquish the much-craved Saudi Pro League title.

Fans and analysts have praised the intricate passing style that Inzaghi鈥檚 team has displayed in their four matches, which have delivered two draws 鈥 including one against Real Madrid in Miami 鈥 and a win in the group stages, before the famous victory over the former Premier League champions.

What has been striking as well is the standout performance of several individuals, with different Al-Hilal players being awarded the Man of the Match in three of the four encounters.

Even in the one match they did not receive the award, the 1-1 draw against Xabi Alonso鈥檚 Real Madrid on June 18, it could be argued that the outstanding player of the match was Salem Al-Dawsari, who gave debutant Trent Alexander-Arnold a difficult first half from the left wing. Instead, the vote went to Gonzalo Garcia.

The 0-0 draw with Red Bull Salzburg at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on June 22 saw Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou follow up his penalty-saving heroics in the opener with another outstanding performance, ensuring the Saudi team secured a point and went into the last matchday with all to play for.

Against Pachuca CF of Mexico on June 26 in Nashville, it was the turn of inspirational captain Al-Dawsari to be acclaimed with the Man of the Match award after scoring the opening goal in a 2-0 win that saw Al-Hilal progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the epic win over Manchester City in Orlando was marked by a two-goal performance from Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo, who accepted the Man of the Match award in emotional circumstances.

Al-Hilal will now face Fluminense of Brazil on Friday evening in Orlando for a place in the semifinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup against either Palmeiras or Chelsea.

Who will be the next star to step up for the Blues?

  • Arab News looks at possible ways that Al-Hilal can upset the odds to reach and possibly win the FIFA Club World Cup final

RIYADH: Al-Hilal are the talk of the football world after their sensational 4-3 win over Manchester City in the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ahead of their quarterfinal against Brazil鈥檚 Fluminense on Friday, Arab News asked three experts on 黑料社区 football how Al-Hilal can continue to upset the odds and potentially reach and win the final.

  • Roel Coumans - Former 黑料社区 national team assistant, head coach of Abha, Al-Hazm, Al-Adalah

鈥淚f Al-Hilal are in any European competition then they would be in the top four and there is no doubt that when Fluminense look at the Hilal team, they will not be underestimating them.

鈥淚n football everything is possible and Hilal can go all the way. I always tell my players to dream big, this is what football is all about.

鈥淏ut it is important that Hilal don鈥檛 look forward too much, the next match is always the important one. There is a chance that after City the players may underestimate Fluminense and that is not possible at this level.

鈥淭hey should involve the Brazilian players who can tell them about Fluminense.

鈥淭he game will be totally different to the City game. In that, they were the underdog and you have to defend much more than against Fluminense.

鈥淲hen I look at Inzaghi鈥檚 tactics, he is always trying to play in a compact 4-5-1 formation and he will ensure that the system is not too different.

鈥淭here is a danger in that South America football is more physical and that may be something that the players are not used to.

鈥淏ut now there is a good vibe around Al-Hilal. If Al-Dawsari can return that will be great as he adds creativity.鈥

  • Paul Williams - Founder and host of The Asian Game podcast, football journalist

鈥淎l-Hilal鈥檚 path to the Club World Cup final has certainly opened up after their stunning upset win over Manchester City. It was a landmark moment, not just for the club but for Saudi football.

鈥淲hile the challenge on paper might look easier against Fluminense, it鈥檚 likely to be anything but.

鈥淥ne has to consider the context and circumstances of the victory against Manchester City, which was achieved without three of their starting XI, who will all be absent again against Fluminense.

鈥淣ot to mention the physical and emotional toll that the 120 minutes in Orlando would have taken. But having slayed the Premier League giant, they鈥檒l attack that game with a renewed sense of vigor.

鈥淪hould they get through, then a likely semifinal against Chelsea awaits, although one can never discount Palmeiras. But having beaten one Premier League giant already this tournament, facing Chelsea would hold no fears for them.

鈥淎nd then it would likely be Real Madrid or PSG in the final, and having already gone toe-to-toe with Real Madrid in the opening game, and even shading that game for large parts, that is another that would hold no fear for Al-Hilal.

鈥淥f course, as fun as it is to speculate, it鈥檚 all still hypothetical and Al-Hilal cannot allow itself to think any further than Fluminense this week. Having dispensed of Inter Milan, they have shown they also should not be taken lightly.

鈥淏ut after defeating the might of Manchester City, Al-Hilal will now believe anything is possible.鈥

  • John Duerden - Asia and Middle East football writer and analyst

鈥淲hile it is premature to talk of the draw opening up for Al-Hilal, there is no doubt that the road to the final looks rockier on the other side.

鈥淭he biggest challenge may be coming back down to Earth after the win against Manchester City.

鈥淐oach Inzaghi talked of how his team climbed Everest without oxygen against the European powerhouse, and while those words were perfect, the message has to now change.

鈥淭he summit is within sight but is still some distance away.

鈥淗ilal are the talk of the football world, and that is a unique position for an Asian club to be in. Maybe now the pressure is off, the tournament will always be remembered as a success, whatever happens.

鈥淥r maybe it will be hard, both physically (after 120 grueling minutes in the heat) and mentally, to recover from the last game.

鈥淎nd, Fluminense will now be very wary, if they weren鈥檛 before. Inzaghi was happy to let City have most of the ball and City were happy to have it. Hilal were hugely impressive on the counter, but Fluminense are not likely to make the same mistakes that City did defensively.

鈥淜orea鈥檚 Ulsan gave the Brazilian(s) many problems but couldn鈥檛 kill the game when they were ahead and eventually paid the price. Taking chances will be key.

鈥淚f Salem Al-Dawsari plays, then he could be the difference, though Hilal would love to have the physical presence of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

鈥淎 win means the last four and there is nobody to fear. If it is Chelsea in the semifinal then the London team are awkward opponents and able to pull off results when needed but they are a level below the elite of Europe.

鈥淎nd that is Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern. Surely one of those will make the final.

鈥淗ilal have impressed but would, rightly, be clear underdogs. Hilal are not expected to win but they have shown that they are capable of doing so.

鈥淔irst though, that cliche has to be repeated all around the training ground over the next day or two 鈥榦ne game at a time.鈥欌

LONDON: 黑料社区 is playing a central role in transforming global football and wider sport, according to Middle East expert Kristian Coates Ulrichsen of the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.

Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency following the release of his new book 鈥淜ingdom of Football: 黑料社区 and the Remaking of World Soccer,鈥 Ulrichsen said the Kingdom鈥檚 rise in global sport is 鈥渘ot a temporary shift but a broad transformation with political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions.鈥

He continued: 鈥淭he Kingdom has undergone profound changes and has quickly and decisively entered the global sports arena through club acquisitions, sponsorship of major tournaments, and hosting high-profile events, notably the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2034.鈥

Ulrichsen noted the country鈥檚 long footballing heritage, with top-tier clubs approaching their centenary milestones and the national team having reached five consecutive AFC Asian Cup finals.

He also highlighted Saudi clubs鈥 strong record in continental competitions since the early 2000s.

In the book, he stresses that sport, entertainment, and tourism form 鈥渋ntegral pillars of Vision 2030 and (are) essential to positioning 黑料社区 as a global destination鈥 in the coming years.
