Lakers level NBA playoff series, Pacers and Thunder win again
  • Slovenian star Doncic, acquired in a blockbuster February trade, scored 31 points to go with 12 rebounds and nine assists for the Lakers
  • Thunder showed no sign of a letdown after delivering the most lopsided game-one victory in NBA playoffs history

LOS ANGELES: Luka Doncic scored 31 points and LeBron James added 21 as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-85 to level their NBA Western Conference playoff series at one game apiece on Tuesday.

Slovenian star Doncic, acquired in a blockbuster February trade, also had 12 rebounds and nine assists for the Lakers, who led by as many as 22 and held on late in a bruising clash at Crypto.com Arena.

The Lakers bounced back from a blowout loss on their home floor, while elsewhere the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder seized 2-0 leads in their best-of-seven first-round series.

The Pacers withstood another big performance from Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo and the return of Damian Lillard, beating the Bucks 123-115 in the East.

The Thunder followed up their crushing 51-point game-one victory over Memphis with another dominant win, beating the Grizzlies 118-99 in their Western Conference clash.

After a disjointed effort in their game-one loss, the Lakers rocketed out of the gate, taking a 10-point lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter and maintaining a double-digit advantage until midway through the fourth quarter.

James, chasing a fifth NBA title in his 22nd season, added 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Lakers, who persevered in a physical game that saw the teams combine for 46 personal fouls.

Caught out early by the Lakers’ increased defensive intensity, the Timberwolves managed to apply some pressure in the final period, when the Lakers suddenly couldn’t get a basket to fall.

The Lakers scored just 13 points in the final period, but Minnesota — led by 27 points from Julius Randle and 25 from Anthony Edwards — couldn’t muster enough offense to capitalize.

“We played hard for 48 minutes,” Doncic said. “We played physical, that’s how we’ve got to play over the whole 48 minutes.”

In Indianapolis, Pascal Siakam scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Tyrese Haliburton added 21 points and 12 assists for the Pacers, who saw a 15-point fourth-quarter lead slashed to two thanks to a 13-0 scoring run from the Bucks.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 34 points, adding 18 rebounds and seven assists.

Nine-time All-Star Lillard, playing his first game in five weeks after undergoing treatment for a blood clot in his right calf, scored 14 points and handed out seven assists for Milwaukee.

Lillard’s three-pointer with 2:33 to play pulled the Bucks within 115-113. But Siakam responded with a three-pointer.

Andrew Nembhard drilled another trey and the Pacers held on to win a game that was testy throughout.

A brief scuffle in the first quarter resulted in technical fouls for Milwaukee’s Gary Trent Jr. and Indiana’s Bennedict Mathurin. Siakam and Milwaukee’s Bobby Portis received technicals with less than two minutes to play, and there was plenty of jawing in between.

“It’s fun,” Haliburton said. “This is what everybody lives for. We’re all competitors, so having a lot of fun competing right now.”

In Oklahoma City, the Thunder showed no sign of a letdown after delivering the most lopsided game-one victory in NBA playoffs history.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 27 points, Jalen Williams added 24 and Chet Holmgren delivered 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Thunder, who opened the game on a 9-0 run and led by as many as 23.

Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 26 points and Ja Morant added 23 for the Grizzlies, who showed signs of life in the third quarter only for Oklahoma City to open the fourth on a 9-0 run.

The Grizzlies wouldn’t get within 15 points the rest of the way.

FIFA President Infantino announces new ASEAN Cup tournament for Southeast Asian nations
  • Southeast Asia already stages the ASEAN Championship, a biennial regional competition, with Vietnam winning the most recent edition in January

KUALA LUMPUR: FIFA President Gianni Infantino unveiled a new football tournament for Southeast Asian nations on Sunday at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia.
Southeast Asia already stages the ASEAN Championship, a biennial regional competition, with Vietnam winning the most recent edition in January. But Infantino said the new tournament will be held during FIFA’s international match window allowing players from leagues around the world to join their national teams.
“Through the FIFA ASEAN Cup, we are uniting countries together, and this competition will be a huge success,” Infantino said. “It will help boost national team football in the ASEAN region and will support the development of our sport across all of Southeast Asia.”
Infantino made the announcement hours after East Timor was formally admitted as ASEAN’s 11th member.
“The number 11 is a symbolic one in the footballing world as each team has 11 players,” Infantino said.
Indonesia was the only team from an ASEAN member nation to advance beyond the third round of continental qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The new southeast Asian tournament is expected to be staged in a similar format to the Arab Cup. FIFA said it would engage stakeholders including the Asian Football Confederation before finalizing the details.

Cummins out of first Ashes test, Smith to captain Australia
  • Cummins has been an ever-present in the Australia side for Ashes clashes since his first test against England in the 2017-18 series

SYDNEY: Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins will not be fit for the first Ashes test in Perth next month and will be replaced as captain by Steve Smith, Cricket Australia said on Monday.
Cummins has been sidelined by a lower-back issue since July and was already a major doubt for the series opener against England, which starts on November 21.
CA said in a statement that Cummins had now resumed running and would be back bowling soon, offering hope the 32-year-old might be fit to take part in the second day-night test in Brisbane from December 4.
While losing the captain and top fast bowler for the opening test of a high-profile series, Australia have had plenty of time to make contingency plans as the nation has sweated on the fitness of Cummins.
Even if the squad for the series has not been announced yet, Scott Boland is almost certain to replace him in the bowling attack alongside Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc at Perth Stadium.
Boland has had infrequent opportunities at test level over the years given Australia’s depth in the fast-bowling department, but he has more often than not produced when called upon.
The 36-year-old is particularly effective on Australia’s hard decks and has taken 62 wickets at an average of 16.53 in his 14 previous tests.
Cummins has been an ever-present in the Australia side for Ashes clashes since his first test against England in the 2017-18 series, helping Australia first win back and then retain the urn ever since.
Smith, who was sacked as captain in 2018 for his part in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, has led the team six times in the absence of Cummins since his rehabilitation.
Australia also play tests against England in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney around the New Year as they look to retain the Ashes urn.

Norris claims ‘beautiful’ Mexico win, replaces Piastri as championship leader
  • With four races remaining, Norris has 357 points, ahead of Piastri on 356 and Verstappen, who is third on 321

MEXICO CITY: Lando Norris regained the lead in the drivers’ world championship for the first time in six months on Sunday when he steered his McLaren to a commanding victory in a breathless Mexico Grand Prix.
Driving with great authority, the 25-year-old Briton came home 30.324 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with four-time champion Max Verstappen third for Red Bull.
For Norris, it was a first win in Mexico, his sixth this season and the 10th of his career — achieved with a near-perfect race from pole position to lift him back to the top of the drivers’ title race by one point for the first time since the n race in April.
With four races remaining, Norris has 357 points, ahead of Piastri on 356 and Verstappen, who is third on 321.
“A beautiful win to celebrate here in this stadium in Mexico,” said Norris.
“It’s one weekend at a time for me. I am happy and I am focused on myself. I am just keeping my head down and I keep to myself...
“I just stay relaxed and it helps. It helped me get a good start and it’s the best thing.”
Leclerc, who gained his seventh podium of the season, said: “I am very happy with the weekend. We didn’t know what to expect here so to get on the podium is a nice surprise.”
For Verstappen, it ended his sparkling streak of winning three of the past four races.
“It was very hectic at the start and I almost crashed out. To be fighting for P2 with all that happened — a strong race for me,” he reflected.
Haas teenage rookie Oliver Bearman was a career best fourth ahead of Norris’ McLaren team-mate and previously runaway series leader Oscar Piastri, and Mercedes’ young rookie Kimi Antonelli.
The Italian’s teammate George Russell was seventh ahead of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari, Esteban Ocon in the second Haas and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
The packed stands on a hot day at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez witnessed high-speed chaos at the start as the leaders powered down and into the first corner.
Norris made a good start from his 14th career pole and was one of four cars abreast as they turned in, but he held on to his lead as Leclerc, Hamilton and Verstappen drew alongside him.

- Breathless -

Leclerc battled Hamilton and ran off while Verstappen, in uncompromising mood, also ran off after attacking. He returned third but gave it back to Hamilton.
Russell lost a place to the Dutchman and was adamant he was forced off while Hamilton complained at the aggression in T1.
“What are they doing about it?” he asked. The stewards took a dim view of his part in the start, meting out a 10-second penalty.
Hamilton was aghast to learn of his punishment, which was followed by a decision not to punish Verstappen for his misdemeanours.
Norris stayed in front ahead of the two Ferraris in grid order while Verstappen lunged at every opening, bouncing off on lap six and then making contact with Hamilton as he tried again on lap seven.
Looking serene in the sunshine, Norris was five seconds clear by lap 15.
Behind him it was breathless stuff in the thin air at 2,200 meters altitude, but Norris appeared unflustered as the chasing pack began to pit.
Norris pitted on lap 34, but such was his superiority he rejoined the race still with an eight second lead.
In a frantic finale, Verstappen was third and chasing Leclerc, while Bearman resisted Piastri before a late VSC deployment to clear Carlos Sainz’s parked Williams halted the drama until the final lap.

Lyon leave it late to beat 10-man Strasbourg in Ligue 1

LYON: Afonso Moreira scored a spectacular last-minute winner to hand Lyon a valuable 2-1 home victory in Ligue 1 against 10-man Strasbourg on Sunday.
Liam Rosenior’s youthful side took the lead at the Groupama Stadium through Joaquin Panichelli before Ismael Doukoure turned through his own net and then received a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.
Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso missed a first-half penalty for the hosts as it seemed the chance for them to go into the top four had gone begging.
However, substitute Moreira’s late heroics sent Lyon fourth on 18 points, while Strasbourg sit seventh, two points behind their opponents.
“It was important to win after the last two matches . There is pride in having rediscovered our team spirit,” Lyon assistant coach Jorge Maciel said.
A win would have sent the visitors into second place behind reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, who won 3-0 at Brest on Saturday.
Strasbourg went in front on 25 minutes when Argentine forward Panichelli glanced in a header at the end of an excellent team move.
But the lead lasted only six minutes as the unfortunate Doukoure deflected a Malick Fofana cross into his own goal.
Lyon then had a golden opportunity to go ahead when the referee adjudged Valentin Barco to have caught Corentin Tolisso in the box — the official sticking with his original decision after an on-pitch VAR review.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders profited from the break in play to consult the Strasbourg backroom staff’s notes and duly denied Tolisso from the spot with his legs in the 42nd minute to keep the scores level at the break.
VAR was again at the center of the drama midway through the second period when Doukoure’s day went from bad to worse as his yellow card for a tackle from behind on Fofana was upgraded to a red.
The stricken Belgian was stretchered from the pitch after suffering an injury to his ankle, with Maciel later saying Fofana had been taken to hospital.
“He’s having X-rays done, but for now, we don’t really know. Judging by the images, it doesn’t look good,” the Portuguese said.
Down to 10, Strasbourg showed resilience to keep the hosts at bay and looked set to eke out a good point away from home.
But there was a final twist in the tale as Fofana’s replacement, Moreira, grabbed all three points for Lyon in the 91st minute with a superb curling finish from the left of the box into the far top corner.

Earlier, Lille produced a barnstorming second half to thump bottom-side Metz 6-1.
Goals by Hamza Igamane and Felix Correia had the hosts in charge by the interval before Bruno Genesio’s side ran in four goals in the second period.
Correia doubled up eight minutes after the break and then Romain Perraud, Benjamin Andre and Hakon Haraldsson netted as Lille moved up to fifth.
Ibou Sane scored a consolation goal deep into injury time for winless Metz.
“We’re just not good enough,” Metz midfielder Gauthier Hein said.
“What we’re doing on the pitch isn’t enough against this kind of team. They’re running rings around us, we just don’t have the answers.”
Rennes thought they had nabbed a 93rd-minute leveller at home to Nice but an offside in the build-up to Mohamed Kader Meite’s goal meant the match finished 2-1 to the visitors.
Angers climbed out of the relegation zone courtesy of a 2-0 victory over 16th-placed Lorient with two 18-year-olds in Prosper Peter and Sidiki Cherif doing the damage for the hosts.
Auxerre took their place in the drop zone following a 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Le Havre.

MUNICH, Germany: A two-thirds majority in the German city of Munich voted in favor of a bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, 2040 or 2044 in a referendum on Sunday.
Final results showed 66.4 percent of voters in the Bavarian capital voted in favor of the proposal.
“Munich clearly voted yes,” city mayor Dieter Reiter said in a statement on Sunday.
Joerg Ammon, the pesident of the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV), celebrated the “dream result.”
With 42 percent of Munich’s 1.1 million eligible voters taking part, the turnout was the highest for a referendum in the city’s history.
The previous participation record was 37.5 percent, recorded in 2001 for a vote on building the Allianz Arena, home to German football champions Bayern Munich and host of the 2012 and 2025 Champions League finals.

Munich last hosted the Games in 1972. The Bavarian capital is one of four German regions developing a bid to host the Olympics and was the first to hold a vote to gauge support.
Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr region are also developing bids, with referenda to be held in 2026.
The German candidate will be selected by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) late in 2026 before being submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
After Sunday’s vote, Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder said “we will now flood the DOSB with our arguments.”
Voter willingness to host the Olympics has dwindled in many European cities in recent decades, due largely to concerns over cost.
An estimated 6.7 million euros was spent on Sunday’s referendum alone, with 1.8 million of that going to an information campaign.
The previous seven German bids to host the Summer or Winter Olympics games failed due to popular opposition.
In 2013, Munich voters narrowly rejected a proposal to bid to host the 2022 Winter Games, with only 28.9 percent of eligible voters taking part.
Munich and Berlin are the German cities to have hosted the Summer Olympics.
Los Angeles will host the next edition in 2028 before Australian city Brisbane takes over in 2032.
